So until the group have access to higher powers, plus a coracle at least? Far as I can see, the PCs are stuck with leaving that one be for the moment.

Wait, as far as we know the plague priest and wodewose we’ve been dealing with are the remnants of some crazy cult that had run Ereworn from the shadows until Cobin and his people drove them out? Looking back over the IC I don't think you were told for sure one way or the other, the others got a sob story from a group of Erewornians before Usopi and Chlainn joined them, other sources of info have been Old Hugh and the Hewells who gave a different twist on things...I'd say after seeing Hallowhall Usopi at least would feel the change is for the better at least for Ereworn.

Yeah, I think our initial run-ins with the Erewornians who crossed the border (including the guy whose body we are now carrying) gave a very negative impression of Cobin and his two henchbods (Strawberry and - I forget the other's name?) as evil usurpers now persecuting everyone. Of course, those with reason to flee have largely  been Duke Darion's people. I don't think we made the link with the plague cult and the rulers, though?

GM, I'm reading this as if the children and moms of the town are donating their toys for the Cernach babies. However, before I post as if that is the case, I just want to make sure they're not offering to sell them to me, since that is what I was originally looking for.

I am not the GM, but got the impression they were donations, even widows and orphans have pride, and the need to be compassionate. I could be wrong about that though.

I don't think that would upset the locals if Usopi made a cash donation to the local poor via whatever persons he thinks would best use it for the community. What goes around comes around, as Great Auntie Vulgaria would say...

Caith can burn the 1 MP for Moonglow, but it's a bit pointless if there are brighter sources of light available. Main advantage of it tactically is it's a bit less noticeable than fire light to any observers.

Only reason she hadn't cast it was the torch Alphail took down first. If needed, she'll cast it, but she does have a lantern of her own, and a spare flask of oil.

GM, when you said there was a hole in the wall to the north, did you mean that the masonry and stuff had caves in vie a hole in the wall to the north, or that there was a hole in the wall to the north that was not filled with dirt and thus impassable? I read it as the hole being the cause of the cave in, but if there’s a path north through an open hole then I’d probably be a little more wary of something coming through it. :P

OK, I have edited the most recent PC post I made, because I finally have a plan of some kind to do something about the current predicament IC. You'll have to forgive Caith being cautious, but she does reckon that annoying a god in their own temple to be a most unwise and dangerous thing to do.

However, the suggestion of Mars at work on dungeon site is one to make me yell "Bad God! No territory for you! DIE FOR THE QUEEN!" and start looking for a crowbar. To be fair, Caith defines 'Good Engineering' as 'Engineering she can't figure out a way to break', rather than merely durable.

Way of the TIger series is great but I hate the instant deaths.  Tried to play that game and due to a bad roll Avenger got taken down by a crossbow bolt whilst trying to scale some wall.

Regardless of how evil and twisted our GM is I doubt he does instant deaths.  Naturally, this is what makes sappers so unbalanced, the way they can make 2 x 2 x 20000m pit traps and get elephants to fall on unsuspecting victims....

A dangerous plan, but given the situation, backed up and cut off, but both Chlainn and Torineach are in fairly hefty armour as far as fire is concerned? One that has the merit of slightly limiting the potential for friendly fire incidents.

Depending on how large the annoyance in ancient armour is, you could try using the oil on the floor to your advantage, and pit the weight of two warriors against one to push him over or force him back into his previous hiding space.

These are strictly player suggestions, and you are entirely at liberty to ignore them if they don't seem tactically useful to you.

Technically speaking, Chlainn and Torineach haven't run out of oil, it's just relocated to the wall and floor. Still burns if lit. That's a temporary barrier of sorts.

In hindsight, I apologize for the Charge! suggestion, as pushing and shoving on a slippery floor might be a bad plan, even without specific rules for it.

As to trading places? Chlainn takes Horse stance, and let the acrobat warlock Torineach dive under and through to behind him. Admittedly, if the Centurion is a large chap, the dive through and under trick might work on him as well, though it may not work so great on a less obliging target. Acrobatics has rules already, right?

The mummy treasures in the Core are for Kaikurhan mummys buried at the centre of trap-filled haunted tombs, this was a specially constructed guardian in a small temple so don't get too excited. ;)

Easy split really. There's six of us, and including Chlainn's +1 sword there's 6 magical items, and the connotations of the items (at least in my first impression anyway) seem to be well suited to a lot of us.



Assuming we're sharing, here's a first draft of thoughts on the possible split? (Correct me if we're not sharing, and let me know if anybody doesn't like this spread or wants to make changes.)

Chlainn: +1 Sword
fighty magic weapon. Maybe trade with Lann if Chlainn doesn't want it? I know Lann's been clamoring for a magical weapon.

Usopi: A pair of bronze gauntlets.
No clue what they do, but gauntlets are armor right?

Lann: A small leather purse.
maybe something to do with money/carrying lots of stuff?

Caith: a golden cup, traced with filigree
a cup suggests a ritual effect of some kind right? Wouldn't use it in battle, wouldn't slit anyone's throat with it, wouldn't shoot it at someone. Caith's sort of our ritualistic magicy type?

Brannon: An old leather-bound scroll.
Brannon's all about that lore and knowledge. Maybe it's a spell scroll of some kind, maybe it's some long lost tomb? Maybe it's instructions for what we were SUPPOSED to do in this temple instead of just bumbling through it. :P    Could trade with Lann if it's a spell scroll of some kind?

Aphail: a single arrow of dark wood with white feathers. To his eyes it carried magic.
Pretty straight forward. Aphail's an archer. Though he already has a fancy arrow, so maybe Brannon might rather have this one to augment any ranged attacks he makes? (in which case I don't know what Aphail would get instead. The leather purse?)

Nah let chlainn keep the sword. I have a magic blade just that it has zero bonusn

Because if Chlainn's getting down to near negative numbers in Health, that will be Caith's next move. Wasn't sure if someone on that little health would be capable of swallowing potions.

Lol, sorry if it seemed like I’m jumping the gun. In the past when we’ve found loot it seemed like we either lost track of it, forgot about it, or spent a couple weeks not moving forward because nobody wanted to just claim things, so I was thinking we’d do what we did last time we got magical gear and just call dibs and figure out what they did after. (With trades as requested or needed afterwards of course.)

I’m cool with holding off till we have them identified.

Its a brass and steel breastplate over a leather banded form ( AF 3) it will need work at a qualified armourers to get it back to human-wearable....also it smells like old dead things.

And we definitely spent a good two weeks hemming and hawing about who should get what from the magic loot we got after the Barrow. If I recall the only one willing to actually call dibs was Chlainn, and he kept calling dibs on another item every couple of days. :P


Also, I think it’d probably be more efficient to just have Kores ID the items once we’re in Gliss. Going back to Cerhanch lands seems a little out of the way. Though who knows, maybe we’ll bump in to a wizard of some kind before then.

The coin is linked to the purse and returns to it at sunrise, it only functions for this particular coin.

The gauntlets/cestus allow someone to go to -3 hp without going unconcious at 0 hp.

Remember, you guys are the weirdos who are actually going out into the world and poking your heads into insane places. Most Sorcerers, and even then they're super rare, lock themselves in a tower or get hired by a court and only grow in power by study and copying older items they can convince said weirdos to bring to them. So they're on the equivalent of 5xp a year because they don't stick they're heads into tombs and demon-haunted ruins like a crazy person. :)

I don't believe in pooling loot.  If Chlainn had a choice, he'd grab everything, and spend it all on drink and npc 'experience' but he can't help overcome his personal addictions.  Still, we're here together as a team so lets not fight over loot.

I think in one game run by shaun, I claimed a +1 sword because my kidney was attached to it.  Some guy quit shortly afterwards, but he was quite passive if you ask me, whereas my barbarian was in the front at all times....


Chlainn is happy to nick everything and blow it away on looks 10+  chicks, feeble attempts at gambling and solvents.....  Don't trust him...  not to mention fines for public urination....  surely not in the medieval world?....

And you are right about everyone being part of a team which was why I never hoard loot I find and am happy to share since ultimately we all fight the same foes. Before Caith joined I even refrained from expanding all my powers just to ensure he can keep his friends alive.

Caith's edited IC post contains her thoughts on the division of loot, and the reasoning behind them.

Beyond that, as there is nothing further she can currently contribute of use other than archery support, and that seems a task best left to the experts rather than a hedgewitch, sleeping is the most sensible thing she can do right now.

I am quite happy to leave Brannon time to think on any questions he may have for Caith later IC, or before she goes to sleep, but one way or another, she needs the rest.

Well our self righteous knight more or less had it right to an extent in distributing the loot. I'm perfectly fine with you guys getting the items :) don't worry Lann will if he lives be more covetous with desiring loot to keep in character. Haha yeah, In character nobody knows, but Usopi basically took a dead knight’s armor and weapons and set off on a righteous quest to show the wild northern folk the grace and strength of Gatanades by following a weird version of the knights code that he’s basically pieced together from stories and random scripture. That’s why he’s a bit... naive about the world. Sort of a younger Don Quixote type deal.

Getting close to fight in melee does not sound wise. Got assorted ranged weaponry, but seeing HU to hit is a big problem. How to move the fog away, or keep out of it's way?

Not sure if the monster needs magic to hit! I can't see if the men have magic but if I m. Right, the men who were killed didn't have much magic as I only saw one crummy potion. And the fact their weapons inflict no apparent damage suggest she could require magic to hit

Thinking on the mirror:
In Chlainn's case, it showed the only other people in the room at the time about to attack him, so perhaps it's a proximity thing?

If the creature upstairs has more than one head, but one head was showed the mirror would it then attack itself like one of those two headed giants arguing with themselves? Maybe, if no one else was close enough at the time... Good question, and Caith doesn't know if it would work.

That's one weapon, and it's magical, and it's from the same lot as the creature's old master. Weapon of the enemy used against another one. That's handy, but we need to figure out how to show it to one head without being anyone else being close enough to show up in the mirror.

Other thoughts:
Despite the poison mist and reptilian sound effects, Caith's never heard of a limbless dragon or a wyrm with a human head in the tales. That's actually a good thing.

Could still be a demon of some kind, but not one she's ever heard of. It's not a fey creature she's ever heard of either, so the things that work on them may not work on her upstairs.

Choking mist might be lessened in effect by the old urbans trick against fire's smoke of tying a wet cloth over the face, covering nose and mouth.

Also, can anyone lend Caith three silver coins?

I don’t really see the harm in Lann summoning a fey for info. If he gets the same lady that IDed the magic gear that could be good. She was helpful and seemed to know Selentine stuff... though I guess that could mean she and this creature are the same thing just in different forms....

I don’t know how we’d get it to look in the mirror other then the first person out the hole holding it up in front of them. Though maybe we could open one of the doors to our hiding spot, put the mirror in the doorway, and just start shouting till the thing finds us and comes down here? Then shut the door again if it looks like the mirror has had some effect?

Anybody got any magic that generates wind? A good gust of wind might give us a few seconds without smoke obscuring our aim and melting us?

Worse case scenario of a straight up fight, it comes down to my bastard sword, Lann’s magic sword, Chlainn’s magic sword, Aphail’s holy arrow, Caith’s magics, Lann’s magic. (That’s all our magical weaponry right?) maybe if we try the mirror idea above and it fails, then the mirror holder steps back and we let it in to the room we’re in and surround it on all sides?.... dunno if getting it underground would make it stronger...

Thanks for the three silver coins. You'll get them back, just Caith was short of the right change for seven silver moons.

Caith plans to use Peer to take a look outside for her upstairs, and Moonglow on the arrow. Don't know if the arrow is charged, so this is the best way Caith can think of to provide the light of seven moons in one night, after midnight and before morning. That and there's a witch tradition about drawing down the power of the moon IRL, so it may count as some kind of Summoning too.If there were seven knights in the party, she'd have woven them into the Moonglow as well.

Sorcerers work on tried and tested formulae, rote and repetition of the spells still known to mortal man. Witches are a little more chaotic in approach to magic.

And if she lives through this, I'm damn tempted to have her learn Ritual Magic as her next witch special skill.

Caith does her moon magic to try and charge the sleep arrow.
Caith uses her magic to check above ground.
          Assuming the creature is up there;
Open one door and Usopi stands in it holding the mirror facing out as we all make noise to draw in the monster
If the mirror works we close the door and let it fight itself.
If the mirror doesn’t work Usopi jumps back and lets the thing in through the door,
at which point we all surround it and wail on it with our various magics/mundane fighting skills until it dies or we do.
         If the creature isn’t there then we all just leave?

Normal mist is just wet. The old housekeeper left by the fleeing empire appears to use rather more powerful cleaning agents than a bucket of water.

And Caith's cleaned up a blacksmith's forge lately, hence her understanding of the stuff that looks like water, but scours rust from metal as well as flesh from bone.

Well, they might have been...hard to tell from the condition of the bodies though.

Lann could ask him if he knows any other ways out of this place, as he has the knowing of earth and stone. Small fella from the floor is local, and probably has more recent knowledge than the wall lass did.

Also, a large creature that slithers on it's belly like a snake across the ground is less likely to get bogged than one with legs. The PCs have legs. Guess who boggy ground is going to screw up? Not her upstairs.

Tangleroots might work, depending on how strong the target is.

We have a creature to defeat that has a poisonous mist attack of some kind, probably a breath weapon, that dissolves flesh and other organic matter like plants.

Now, what is the box the shouty skull of the old master was contained in made of? Gold. Incorruptible gold box for an organic treasure hid near a sour breathed guardian. Not iron, not bronze, but gold.

As to the matter of where the old master's knowledge hid his knowledge? The damn skull spoke of dark secrets and sorcerous power, did it not? Where does any man keep his knowledge if not written down? Inside his skull.

What happened to that shouty skull? It was smashed to bits, and and the shouting stopped with it. That's all folks.

Where was the treasure? We found the stuff in the cellar shrine.

The gold box was buried in the grove near the ruined villa, and the Party are currently hiding in the cellar of. The box is still there, and some coins.

There are no other exits from the cellar, and getting trapped down here with even one nasty sour breathed head is bad news, but it's one of the few ways the PCs can be sure only one head gets a look at the 'mirror of weaponized paranoia'.

If blades are not advised to be used against it, then why is that? Could it be the fact that getting close to it is bloody difficult to do without being spotted and breathed on and/or bitten.

Give Caith a chance to use Peer, and figure out if it's still up there.

So GMs understanding is

- Peer
-if its there, Illusion to get it to investigate cellar.
- once heard outside the door, Usopi does the mirror thing.
- inside the room the three archers and Caith are spread along the western wall of the main hall, Chlainn, Killian, Scalfr, Loge and Lann are arrayed in the centre of the room and Usopi retreats back to them.
- Madness and death ensues.

I can offer a few other plans, but they're all as tricky to pull off as the mirror one.

Transfix the heads to let the Party out and take better combat positions. All random chance of how many heads it shuts up though. Caith does have a scroll of it as well, so she could throw more than one Transfix to get them all if the first spell doesn't catch them all.

Turn the housekeeper to stone with Fossilize. Smash statue. Dig our way out after that.

Banish requires touching the target, and Caith really doesn't fancy having her upstairs in the back of her head forever. Mind you a nice little chat away from the men might calm her down...

The sleep arrow may or may not work, but it's the best Caith can offer Alphail right now.

Other than that, the mirror trick seems the most appropriate weapon to use against her upstairs.

I think indirect attack spells have better chance. The creature has high MD. Even my rather high MA can't really affect it

Yeah, Enhancement and Force of Will are both Simultaneous spells and can be cast in the same round.

Well, if anyone wants to modify the original plan, this is when to say so, because Caith's next trick is Illusion, and it is either going to get her upstairs attention down here, not up in the air, or provide further information about how they sense things. If she can't see the mirror's illusion, it's a bad plan.

Her upstairs can either see through her own fog, being immune to it, or doesn't see by normal means. If she can sense Caith's Peer location (Why else is her upstairs looking up in the air at that particular spot then?) at least one of her upstairs heads is distracted already.

That many heads makes Caith's odds on a single Transfix spell getting the whole lot at once doubtful. Two castings might work.

Question: What bits of her upstairs did Killian and Co hit before? Caith hasn't seen any wounds on the bits of her seem so far in the description, so she's a bit puzzled by that...

Stops me looking like Darkman.  I love the darkman look.  Played it with Luxiex, the Kurland knight who initially had looks 14 and kept making WW2 movie quotes.  Lack of cover rules in Dragwars and Kores got burnt.  I make it a point of taking on massive scars when health goes down to zero.  Not with Chlainn though, he's a tough, 'black knight' Knight...

Meanwhile, I think we have slightly more info to work with about our 7+ headed problem upstairs.

Things to note: I tend to agree that the party are fighting a tank monster here, one with heavy armour, and not a whole lot of damage done that Caith can see from above. That would logically be why arrows are only scratching her hide, right?

Not sure, but Kores was thinking of giving it away to some npc.  Ask some deformed brat to carry it to Ongus for him and ask some friend to give the kid a job.  Kores tried to give it away to a demon, shader I think?  Didn't have a use for it so Kores had to 'agree' to feed the demons pet.  Course', eating a SHADOWBOLT didn't quite agree with it....

Kores Varias, rolled 3 using 2d10.  Shadowbolt.

Kores again coalesced shadow about him with fell sounding words and frightful gestures but this time the bolt of darkness struck the creature fully and it shuddered then almost immediately dissolved into tattered shadow and was gone.

Tobias was an advanced scout with night vision goggles and using stealth technology.  However he was spotted and about to be interrogated when Colm hit him with a flamethrower.  It was supposed to be an 'accident'...., but Colm himself was hit by some armour piercing round earlier and nobody took ownership for the arrow, I mean, 'crossbow bolt'....

Caith is describing what she sees from 20 meters above her physical location.
Counted 7 heads at least, hard to tell when they're all moving about, and can't she see the body for the mist. Heads are much larger than human ones as far as she can tell. So if there's a body in there, it's at the other end of the necks, in the middle of a poisonous cloud.

However, luring one of the heads down is only useful if the mirror's illusion (As Caith reasons it probably is) is something their eyes can see to be affected by. So if Caith's plan of sending an Illusion up to get her attention visually doesn't work, mirror probably won't work either. Can still possibly get their attention by the Illusion shouting at them I guess.

Caith could try using Transfix if her Illusion doesn't work. That's why I've been trying to figure the monster's abilities IC from the descriptions in game, and using the spells to get further information.

I figure that even if this is a doomed last stand situation, then Caith aims to go out in style. Tunneling out via summoned miners this time seems unlikely to get far enough away from the problem to work, so just be ready to run up the neck to get to the body.

I hope Lann is ready to act like the fearless warrior he aspires to be. Going to have to do this combat like an obstacle course if you want to get a chance to hit the body up close.

Her upstairs reacted to Caith's Illusion, so I'm assuming the mirror trick works, and that if it doesn't? Her upstairs can't breathe much mist out if her mouth's full of mirror. Show them the mirror, and if no luck with showtime? Throw the mirror down her throat. Mind the teeth though.

I did consider the chucking the potion of control down her throat too, but I have no idea if it would even work on a freaking kaiju sized opponent. Lots of ideas, but all of them depend on the luck of the dice, so lets just see how it goes.

Um, looks like you sold or dumped your other armour as its not on your sheet.  When you were hit before the acid damaged your skin/clothes and the gambeson under your armour but didn't seem to damage the magical armour itself.

Let me break this down for you Lann, one more time...

I can only justify Caith figuring out that the creature's misty breath burns and dissolves organic matter from looking at the text in game, and from using her eyes and admittedly, from also asking the occasional question of the ladysmith while cleaning out Elen's forge for dust.

Caith may not notice everything that happens, but she does pay attention when her life may depend on it. Never annoy a blacksmith if you have a canine character motif in a setting like this... ;)

Caith's wearing organic armour, wolfhide over a quilted linen underlayer. That's likely to react with whatever nasty corrosive stuff that thing is breathing, and probably spitting out. Most recent thing like it Caith's seen was the seriously toxic metal cleaning stuff a bladesmith would use. The big gold box for the skull was a bit a hint too.

That's my IC excuse, and I'm sticking to it. Thought Lann knew a bit about alchemy and potions? Not using your character's brain there.

As for going for the body? Anything with that many heads is a pretty sure sign that it's not going to be stopped by stabbing it in the head. Too many of them to for that handicap it by losing one down here. Like a hermit crab and legs. If it's got a heart? Then it's heart logically has to be in it's largest bit of body. Head isn't it.

Caith knows human anatomy and a bit of animal anatomy as well, so that's her reasoning for aiming for the center, not the probably expendable excess of heads.

I admit to knowing what one of these was as a kid long before I ever started playing RPGs watching monster movies and Hercules cartoons on Saturday morning tv, and that's the one thing I haven't let Caith use IC, because she isn't the player, she's the Player Character.

I haven't seen one of these in DW for quite some time. Hence all the questions and reading the text in game carefully, because the last time I did see one of these in DW? It was a TPK situation due to the party rushing in without thinking and getting hammered flat in half a dozen rounds.

Problem is the text doesn't say we can target the body and the text doesn't say we if the spit affects magical armour
