Aphail MacRoach:
Aphail continues to skirmish with the Shadow, slashing and stabbing with with ancient dagger with good effect. Gat is effective enough at distracting the horror. His wound is bleeding continuously, despite Caith's ministrations, apart from his relic arrow as he is. The Quarrybolt calls to him, just out of reach in the Shadows chest! -1hp Quarrybolt.
As Aphail and Gat circled the enemy, Lann suddenly moved away across the wall into the farmyard...Aphail dove across to close the gap and sank his dagger in again. Gat snapped at the trailing shadows but was getting frustrated at not finding anything to sink his teeth into. The shade lashed out again as Aphail stabbed it raking claws down Gats side, the hound snarled then looked up at Aphail and whined sharply.
Sir Uthen of Sadley:
Sir Uthen hears Usopi's call to the others to head to the farmhouse and decides that withdrawal seems like a good idea and will do so, but at a speed that covers others - if anybody else seems expressly interested in standing their ground or getting in front of Uthen, he won't stop them, but he won't overtake anybody else who is already retreating, or (the Good Lord forbid) who has fallen.
Sir Uthen began retreating towards the farmhouse fending off the rabid attacks of the shade-thing, suddenly he saw past it shoulder a cloud of blackest shadow hurtling towards him. He tried to dive aside but it settled around him blocking out all light, creeping into his very pores...his eyes...his ears...his mouth...threatening to swallow him whole...there was a heavy impact on the side of his helmet and he felt something hot and wet gout down his neck and chest. His will broke and he turned and ran screaming in the darkness not knowing or caring which direction he ran....
Usopi Venia:
Usopi grunts as he feels another blow penetrate his armor and draw more blood from his body.
"Garam, Holt, Brannon! To the farmhouse! I do not believe I will hold them for much longer!" Usopi shouts to the less well armored combatants, bringing up his shield and attempting to cover himself as he slowly backs away from his opponents toward the farmhouse.
He could feel the life flowing from him, but he still smiled in the face of his opponents. they were powerful and dark beings, and it was unfortunate that he could not send them to the afterlife, but if he could save others with his death then this battle would still be a victory for Gatanades.
Caith Cernach:
Caith does not bother processing the idea that springs into her head, and shouts "GARAM, HOLT, RUN TO HOUSE, BUT SING THE SHEEP IN TOO. LOUD AS YE CAN!" from the doorway, then tells Kell and Caer "Ye two as well. I can nay calm 'em, but ye can, they know ye, nay me! Sing the sheep in, please! And Kell? Get that hearthfire lit again, quick as ye can. We need more light..." as she tosses a tinderbox from her belt pouch to the matriarch of the household.
She hangs out of the doorway to lessen the distance between her and the wounded knight Ser Usopi enough to reach with magic, and to allow others to enter, then knits flesh and bone back in place yet again.
OOC: Caith casts GREATER HEALING on Usopi.
Beathan MacPharlain:
In reply to Usopi Venia (msg # 331):
Beathan runs back towards Usopi. Throwing his arms wide to draw its attention, and himself between Usopi and the shade. "Sweet light, I hope this works."
OOC: Cast Force field.
Toirneach Lann:
Lann leapt back over the wall and followed Beathan, moving next to him and barking a short incantation.
Usopi circled around the dead-thing putting himself between it and the other three, as he did so Beathan ran in from the side with another of the shade-things in pursuit. As he stepped in front of Usopi, Lann also ran up beside him.
Both Lann and Beathan spoke words but Usopi did not catch them
Within the dwelling Kell and Caer nodded to Cat and Kell grabbed clump of oily wool and threw it onto the hearth, her voice lifting as she sparked it and stoked the fire. Caer turned a stern face towards the windows with an iron knife clutch in his hand as he joined his voice to his mothers.
"The gowan glitters on the sward,
The lav'rock's in the sky,
And Colley on my plaid keeps ward,
And time is passing bye.
Oh, no! sad an' slow!
I hear nae welcome sound;
The shadow of our trystin' bush.
It wears sae slowly round!
My sheep-bell tinkles frae the west,
My lambs are bleating near,
But still the sound that I lo'e best,
Alack! I canna hear.
Oh, no! sad an' slow!
The shadow lingers still;
And like a lanely ghaist I stand,
And croon upon the hill.
I hear below the water roar,
The mill wi' clackin' din;
And Lucky scolding frae her door,
To bring the bairnies in.
Oh, no! sad an' slow!
These are nae sounds for me;
The shadow of our trystin' bush,
It creeps sae drearily.
I coft yestreen frae chapman Tam,
A snood of bonnie blue,
And promised, when our trystin' cam',
To tie it round her brow.
Oh, no! sad an' slow!
The time it winna pass;
The shadow of that weary thorn
Is tether'd on the grass.
O now I see her on the way,
She's past the witches' knowe;
She's climbin' up the brownie's brae—
My heart is in a lowe.
Oh, no! 'tis na so!
'Tis glaumrie I ha'e seen;
The shadow of that hawthorn bush
Will move nae mair till e'en.
My book o' grace I'll try to read,
Though conn'd wi' little skill;
When Colley barks I'll raise my head,
And find her on the hill.
Oh, no! sad an' slow!
The time will ne'er be gane;
The shadow of the trystin' bush
Is fix'd like ony stane."
As the song went on, spilling out from the house, Holt and Garam and then Brannon took it up even as they fired arrows at the thing that had injured Usopi.
Suddenly Usopi felt his wounds mend beneath his armour, though he could not hear Caiths spell over the rising song.
Both of the spirit-shapes went into a frenzy, raking and ripping at Beathan but he was untouched by their claws though to all observers he should have been torn asunder....sweat poured down his face.
Usopi lunged forward at the enemy, as Garam stepped beside him with a crook in hand coming down but they're retreat made the blows less than forceful and they went aside. Suddenly the armoured, bloody form of Sir Uthern appeared out of a cloud of inky darkness and collided with Garam who guided the wild-eyed man towards the door of the dwelling where he collapsed just within scrabbling about in panic.
The group continued retreating and Holt and Brannon both loosed their shafts as they reached the door of the dwelling.
As the song rose the sheep seemed to calm a little and a few began to step upon the fallen 'gates' and jump over the inner wall into the yard itself, streaming towards the woolshed...some passed through a cloud of darkness that hovered within the fence and began screaming in the darkness but most of their fellows began pouring into the fold.
Hearing the song the two sheep dogs that had been cowering under the woolshed ran out and began gathering stragglers away, barking at the shadowy-mistforms that were polluting their home.
Deise:
Deise mutters silent curse having remebered at the last to stay quiet less attention be drawn. Mind racing and unsure of exactly where he is, he will undertake the following actions if possible: (1) listen to where the the different noise is coming from, (2) try to sense whether any obstacle or trap is near or coming closer, (3) move slowly at a belly crawl to where the colleagues are shouting.
In his mind, Deise offers a prayer for the first time in over half his life.
"Gatanades, Lord, I am not a good man and deserve no mercy from you for the life I lead. But I am in trouble and my friends are in trouble trying to protect innocent folk. For their sake Lord, shine upon us and offer mercy to the innocent against these vile abominations. I swear to devote my life to protecting land and people from evil should I survive. I am yours Lord, make me your eyes and ears so that I might help.
As Deise crawled forward he felt something cold pass over him and almost lost hope, but then a song broke out as he cleared the middle wall and he could hear movement about him and smell wet wool...and not a little urine and blood...he reached out for one of the sheep and was suddenly dragged roughly up and over a wooden slat and then a stone wall as his fingers tangled in the animals wool.
The song was louder now and he could easily follow it across the open clear ground of the yard. Recalling the layout of the farm he rose a little and swung out with his right arm finding the wall of the dwelling...if he followed it and turned the corner he would find the door and the source of the song that had guided him in.
