Hi all just a quick note to inform you all that I will be on annual leave from the 18th August 2012 for two weeks.

The first week I doubt I will be able to post as I will be sunning my self with my wife and daughter in Tenerife. The second week should be a little better as I will staying with my parents in Wales and they have a computer and failing that I will have my smart phone.

Could the GM please NPC my character from Saturday onwards. I will email you when I get back and will be able to post.

Please can you all look after my character and try not to get them killed :o)

We weren't quite that adventurous, and it would have been difficult with a 2 year old and 5 year old!  We did get about an eighth of the way around the lake then back again, despite the wind and the rain.  And it was too cloudy and rainy to see much!  But we'd been there before and yes, it is a beautiful place.

Very jealous of you hanging around in Roma!

Loving Roma now after settling in (well somewhat settling in).  Hahaa, yes a 2 year old would definitely up the ante for the trek.  Would be great to see it during winter (we went in mid January although the week before we were there there was blizzard conditions for a day or so!!!).  Am slowly edging out into the city of Roma to try and at least look at gaming stores even if they're most likely all in Italian of which I speak very very little. :)

Nah, had a few tricky moments when the hotel AC wanted to shut itself down on a 40C day but it all worked out in the end. I'm in maintenance now so I don't have to deal with guests much anymore. :)

Chuckle. I have done my best - though it got much closer than I would have liked! What started as a quick keyhole surgery for appendicitis and 24 hours recovery ended up being peritonitis and pneumonia, and six days of IV antibiotics.

Still, taking cyclizine was quite an experience...

Hm....  Lots of friends protesting.  They say 1M vs HK Police of 240k.  They count usually 1, 2, 500k, 1M...  It was after 12am that some kids decided to attack some police, storm the government building and stack up metal barriers.  Don't approve myself but theres a big fan base for those who throw glasses, bananas and shout a lot.  Very little damage but a few cops got floored and bleeding.

Thing is, like SARS, everyone suddenly thinks they'll get it.  In this case, HK government has pretty much confirmed they're going to implement an extradition law for cases where people commit crimes overseas can be carried off.  Some kid murdered his girlfriend in Taiwan with total solid evidence, but HK can't send him over without this so he's stuck in a prison.  They fear the PRC will use it to demand fugitives hiding in HK.

IMHO, DW is a Dark Fruitcake soaked in Rum compared to the Vanilla Sponge with cream filling that would be it's D&D counterpart.

But I got into RPGs via The Forest Of Doom FF book, so I'm biased towards that style of fantasy RPG writing more than the endless rules text of D&D in the first place.

I am sure that this post belongs here, but I dont want to clog up the other busier threads.

I seek book recommendations. In past year I have gotten through an entire series by Joe Abercrombie and also the new Tad Williams books (plus the old ones).

Coming up to year end and Christmas I like to get through a few good reads but am struggling for inspiratikn. Strictly fantasy, what three books would folks recommend.
Thanks

Re: Absence and Hiatus Thread

Hmmm... probably a slightly risky recommendation (not strictly fantasy, and definitely not a fantasy author), but I loved the Buried Giant by Kazuo Ishiguro. It had a very Legend vibe to it. On the other hand, I like Kazuo Ishiguro's other stuff (especially the Unconsoled and Nocturnes), so I'm biased.

Have you tried the classic Fritz Lieber stuff? I liked the early Fafhrd and Grey Mouser stories. The later collections get a bit too... letchy... for my tastes, especially the Knight and Knave of Swords. Though the Curse of the Smalls and Stars in that collection was quite good.

I can also recommend the Earthsea books, though they're hardly Swords and Sorcery stuff.

Mind you, I haven't read any Tad Williams or Joe Abercrombie, so I'm not sure how helpful my recommendations are!

I really enjoyed A Song of Ice and Fire when it first came out. Picked up A Game of Thrones 20 years ago, just before a Clash of Kings came out. I only got as far as book four. I've got A Dance with Dragons, but just haven't been able to bring myself to read it. Two decades is just too long to retain that level of emotional investment in characters who are all guaranteed to have horrible things happen to them!

And I'm too snooty about popular culture to watch the TV show. :D

Lol, I havn’t read any of the above suggested books, (I’ve thought about reading game of thrones, but I have doubts about Martin ever finishing the series, and I don’t want to start a book series that long just to have it never end.)

I would suggest though any of Terry Pratchett’s Discworld books. They’re technically fantasy in their setting and content, and the actual stories are really good, but they’re also very funny satirical commentaries on human nature and the world at large. Plus they’re easy to get in to and easy reads. Also there’s like... a million of them, so you can’t really run out.

Also, I’m over in the US.

Yeah, I envisage a Wheel of Time type-scenario... where someone else has to write the last book after the author's death. I also wonder if, with the TV series having finished the story, there just isn't the same interest in producing the books?

Discworld is a good call, though! I loved those back in the 90s. Enjoyed the recent TV adaptation of Good Omens. Weaveworld and Imajica by Clive Barker are some of my favourite fantasy-type novels, though again they really aren't the swords-and-sorcery type fantasy.

I wonder if cost made a difference.

When I was ten/eleven, here in Australia, a single AD&D rulebook cost $30. A module cost $15 or so.

I got $1 a week pocket money. When I found DW, and the books were $3 or $4 each...

I think a lot of kids who were into RPGs in Australia at that time fell into DW simply for economic reasons.

I'm sure that AD&D and Warhammer books were more expensive than DW in the UK and Ireland too, but if the disparity was less, it could explain things. It seems with Warhammer being local, that might have been the case - although I can't actually remember prices on Warhammer here.

DW was also a damn sight easier to lug around in a backpack than AD&D was.

A writer I'd suggest looking into is Rosemary Sutcliff, even if she is best known of as an author of books for children, her works are considerably darker than you might expect of a kids writer in tone.

Peter Dickinson's The Dancing Bear is also one hell of a dark tale for a kids book, but remains one of the most evocative descriptions of Byzantium from a fugitive's POV you'll ever find.

Currently re-reading Bernard Cornwell's Stonehenge, and amusing myself with Googlemap view of the same place looking what's still standing now.

As a kid, DW was sold in local bookshops and retailed at similar prices to Fighting Fantasy. AD&D was very expensive and inoy available in specialist shops (mostly in Dublin). Warhammer was more accessible, and The Enemy Within  was the first full campaign of anything that I played.

I'm having some internet issues since new years, not as awful as south of here though mind you. If I miss day/s it's because Optus and their 'we'll send someone out in eight days' turnaround are getting in the way. Apologies, good folk of the Dragons and the Warriors.

Sorry I haven't posted much. Haven't felt like there was a lot for Leofwyn to say.

But also wanted to let you guys know I'll be away for a couple of days. They're giving us 2 days to drive back into the fire-affected areas to collect our belongings and cars we had to leave behind when we were evacuated. (Over 18 hours of driving in 2 days) so I'll post again when I can!

Wish me luck!

I am sorry to hear that the site is being difficult to access for you Turren. :(

It is possible that it may be a site certification issue if it tends to happen around the end of the quarter or month, and if that is the case, then it's not your browser's fault, it's the site, and using incognito mode in your browser may fix the problem.

If it keeps happening persistently, then contact RPoL admin.

I am not a trained computer support person, so that's the best I can offer there.

Yes, I understand. I've gone back to study, and was trying to listen to the lectures while "Leofwyn'ing", but found I had to go back and relisten to all the lectures because I definitely wasn't paying attention.

Re: Absence and Hiatus Thread

OK, all I can suggest that's worked for me so far is removing any bookmarked links to RPoL from your browser before searching the site, or trying to get past the front page of the site.

There's a 'Manage Bookmarks' option somewhere in the pull down menus for most models of browser, so find that first, then you're in the right place to find the 'Delete Bookmark' bit to clear any saved RPoL Bookmarks.

Clearing Browser Cache/Delete History is a more extreme version of the above fix, but may also work.

IMHO, RPoL's site address is not registering properly, probably a site certificate issue as it's happening around the end of a month, and all I'm sure of at this point is that it's definitely an issue at RPoL's end that's making it difficult to search/log in/post to the site.

If it was a SQuirreL Data Base issue, I reckon the site would have crashed by now under the load, based on previous issues of that sort with RPoL.

Disclaimer: I am not a code monkey by trade, but I have come to loathe V-Bulletin's software glitches with long experience of them.

Hey gang!

For the next week or so, I'm going to have very limited internet. My great-aunt (who owns an old farm up in NSW) has been in hospital and has just moved back to her home this week, but needs a little extra care in-home for a bit.

As I am not with Telstra, my phone pics up zero internet out there... although apparently, if I lean my phone against her fire-place at the far end of her house, then I can get 2 bars of service... so I may well be connected! haha

Eager to keep the story going, though!!

Mine is more badass (in a really cool, I wanna grow up to be like her one day, type way).

For example:
One day she was out in her fields visiting her pet sheep (different to her farming sheep), and one of them headbutted her and broke her hip. She had forgot to bring her phone, and so she freaking army-crawled all the way back to her house, and hung out on the balcony (because she couldn't reach her front door handle) until her son came to check on her that evening.

Her brother (my grandpa) (also pretty badass) a couple of years ago snapped his Achilles tendon while changing a tire, and proceeded to drive himself to the hospital... in a manual car, because he forgot his mobile phone.

If those tales I have been told of old Cornwall are correct, wrecking, smuggling and piracy were rife in the past, leading to all those smugglers caves and secret passageways beloved of adventure writers everywhere.

Also, check out a local dish, Stargazy Pie, if you're into seafood that would give H.P. Lovecraft nightmares.

Not that I am that active, but I will be even less active for the next - maybe, as long as a week or two, maybe less. Recurrence of health issues caused by not being able to do my rehab due to rehab centres being closed because of our lockdown (apparently many other health issues can be ignored to stop COVID...). It's not really that serious but something has to give for the moment and worrying about the fact that I am not keeping up here isn't helping my mental health. I want to be more active but I just can't get my head around things here without a lot of effort and I think I need to spend the gaming related mental energy I have on more mindless activities like drawing maps of Ellesland and other places (not that that is mindless but once I get into the zone, it just seems to happen). Sorry. I do enjoy the game when I can focus.

Good luck with the new job, Colm, and for what it's worth, I understand, it's hard to find the energy to play every game with the same enthusiasm all the the time at the best of times.

As this isn't the best of times IRL for everyone, I'm just glad you're OK, having a bit of fun gaming, and happy to hear that you're back in saddle job wise. :)

The party can see the dread city the king and flame have been carried to by the hawks of Nem from where they're (mostly) standing now IC, and that data has been confirmed by the ever vigilant Giles.

Party didn't investigate any further in the lower chambers, due to the need to find a way through the complex and the city swiftly. Also avoided the nasty ice spirit you ran into last time around. Found a genuine Selenite Military standard in the process too.

I am more sad than happy to report that Kores is still having a chat with a large and icy breathed reptilian chap down stairs. Left him some apples as rations and if he doesn't get eaten or frozen, then we can but hope that mayhap he'll learn a little ancient wisdom from his host until the party returns to pick him up as well.

Have a good one, and when you get your mojo back, we'll be here with open arms. :)

Still abiding with my irl partner of many decades now due partly to a shared love of RPGs. :)

And there's nothing wrong with Barbie Dolls. Given Barbie was inspired by a Bild magazine cartoon character with as much sass as she had sex appeal, Barbie for Men would be Lili.

Mag put out a mascot doll of Lili, with a wardrobe of fashionable clothes, aimed at male readers, and she was so popular with little girls as well as dads in Europe that Mattel copied the format and sold millions of Barbie dolls as a result.

Turns out that little girls wanted sophisticated ladies who looked like movie stars rather than child-like dolls. :)

My lovely partner of our 11 year relationship has a healthy obsession with Warhammer Fantasy and pretty much all things horror and grimdark. She played a barbarian in a 6 year D&D campaign; and a pirate (with knight stats) in our Dragon Warriors campaign (our first TPK it was very romantic).

In our home brew, which is current, she runs a swindler bawd type lass who belongs to the town militia. She runs an RR80 Dark Elf Disciple of Khaine on Return of Reckoning MMO too. She used to have barbie dolls too apparently, but I see no evidence of this. The trick is to screen people on the first date. The keepers will be curious about rpgs, the rest will be dismissive. The curious ones are probably worth bringing into your life, even if they don't end up falling in love with RPGs. The dismissive ones... Well lol.

Leofwyn:
Surprise! I’m on my honeymoon!! Hahaha

We ended up sort of eloping (with our immediate family there), with the intention of having a big wedding when restrictions allow!

I’ll be out of communication for a little while, but might pop in here and there! ❤️

Congratulations, Leaf! Have fun!

Thanks everyone! It was a lovely time away... even though my poor husband had tonsillitis for most of it...

Re: Absence and Hiatus Thread

Eeek! I am sorry I have been away. I'm guessing like most of us, Christmas takes a whole lot of time up! Family holidays and gatherings, and work busying at the end of the year!

I hope you are all well!! Those of you in the UK, I hope you're keeping safe!

Re: Absence and Hiatus Thread

Hi folks - sorry for the radio silence. COVID has been cutting its way through my family in the last few weeks. I've not had it personally, but my wife and daughter have both been ill, which has taken up a lot of time on top of work! Both are better now, thankfully and we're out of self-isolation. I'll try to get caught up as soon as I can!

Thanks, Lann!

My wife and eldest daughter are vaccinated, but our youngest was too young to get the shot. It didn't matter much - she felt grim for a couple of days, then picked up again. My wife was testing positive for 13 days(!) but we're all better now!
