PC Present- Guillaume De Morvan

Old Nathan swept the stairs outside of the ancient villa and noted he hadn't seen the foreigner yet this morning.  It wasn't that the old man disliked the stranger indeed the two florins he received a week to take care of the property was more than he'd earned since he was hale and hearty.

The man spoke well, and Nathan had heard that he'd had some business with the Steward and come out of it quite well received.

But the house was now well supplied with ciders, perries and meads...and if Old Nathan happened to sample some occasionally, well surely the master wouldn't mind.

PC Present - Colm Cernach

Maethwon ushered the students out; there were only a dozen this year and none among them bore the divine spark. She sighed and looked across the street, she could have sworn there was a man there in the shadows earlier. And the day before as well.

Shrugging she made her way down the steep stairs towards the temple proper; she'd best help prepare with the others. There would be many people gathering within the sacred stones tonight, the new moon was a good time to have the Goddess close to ones side.

Colm had concealed himself in the shadows beneath his hooded cloak.  As the Priestess of Brigandia crossed the quadrangle towards the Santuary, the hooded figure revealed himself quietly.  Colm loped forward live one of the man unfortunates seeking charity.
19:59, Today: Colm Cernach rolled 11 using 2d10. Stealth.

"Alms for the destitute, my lady of Brigandia." Colm drew very close, his face still cowelled by his hood.

The door to the villa opened with a bang, and a tall figure lurched inside.  "Nathan!  Bring claret!"

Guillaume shrugged off his fine cloak and let it fall to the stone floor.  With a grimace he added "Oh, the North...make that cider then".  He muttered something in Beaulangue about northerners and their lack of decent wines.

It had been a heavy night of "negotiations" and Guillaume's head was spinning.  He sat at his desk and rubbed his eyes.  "Must write the King for more funds..."

When Old Nathan appeared with the cider Guillaume was already snoring.

In reply to Colm Cernach (msg # 2):

" Of course.", she smiled.

" You've been away awile.", she smiled. It was a statement but the way she lifted her voice suggested it was also a question to anyone overhearing.

" Come inside, where its warm. I'll get you some food and maybe we can talk about your troubles."

The old man left the flask on the night stand and closed the door behind him. He grinned to himself, pocketed another flask and made his way home.

"Thank you Maethwon."  Colm follows the Priestess inside, keeping his head down.  When they are safe inside Colm continues,
"In truth I am not sure I should have come.  My Clan are in disgrace, our lands and titles forfeit, and I might be putting you in danger.
I must remain incognito in order to keep safe until my enemies are revealed."

In reply to Colm Cernach (msg # 6):

" Your one of us, we will always aid you.""

" But you are right that it is best you not be seen, though few would know you now."

She took his chin and tilted his head from side to side, " You are not the fresh faced boy you were."

" It is most strange, all at once the members of the Council turned against your clan.  I did make some small enquiries but all I spoke with seemed convinced that the purge was a necessary evil and well deserved."

" I cannot think what they may have thought they knew and what caused such savage measures to be taken."

She placed a pork hock and a small piece of hard cheese on the table before him.

" Eat, you'll need your strength."

" I must go soon to prepare for the ceremony."

"Thank you.  It is safe for me to attend?  I'll keep under my cloak but as the de facto Clan Cernach Leader
and Bearer of the Claidheamh Soluis I must keep the Ritual."

Colm eats his food and contemplates his fate.

In reply to GM (msg # 5):

Guillaume wakes late in the evening. He feels a bit groggy after falling asleep at such an early hour. He splashes some water on his face, and takes a swig of the cider. The villa is cold and quiet. Guillaume changes into some simple clothes, his leather armour of local design and thick woolen cloak. He straps on his sword belt and checks his appearance - another local freeman (he hopes). He grabs a heel of bread and some cheese and heads out into the street. A night before the new moon should be good for 'information gathering'.


Guillaume walks down the hill towards the Temple of Flame.

" It will be safe...I barely recognised you. None of the townsfolk will, and none of the Temple would betray one of their own......unless they fell."

" I'll see you there.  You can remain here if you like, there are no students due back for the rest of the afternoon and it affords a good view over the street."

"I am different, in mind and body for I have completed my Journeyman Training and am ready to take my place among the Priesthood.  Much as it pains me, I think I will need to assume a false identity.  See you at the Ceremony."

Grateful for the hospitality, Colm settled down in the Temple Sacristy for the afternoon and eat his food.  He watched the street as people come and go, noticing a tall red hair but paying him no heed.

You have walked down the road and find yourself among a crowd gathering outside the temple gate, most of the folk appear to be rather well off and are dressed in their best clothes.

Guillaume stands at the edge of the crowd, watching the proceedings.  He looks around for anyone he recognises and makes sure he keeps his distance.  Lets hope this is going to be a nice pagan ritual, he thinks.

Guillaume recognises a number of people but they pay him no more than a second glance, a stranger, possibly a man of means in some provincial Reaver-threatened estate but one of them nonetheless.

The temple gate is a simple gap in the surrounding wall and people are beginning to file through it. A man and a woman stood a little way inside the gate; the man was dressed in white woolen robes and the woman dressed in black robes of the same type.

Two fires burned in pits on either side of the path beside the man and woman and the people funneled between them, some of the worshippers tossed small sprigs of some herb or another into the flames as they passed.

This should be interesting... i'd better come up with a good cover story.

Guillaume tries to think of some far flung clan that he has heard of in case someone asks him to identify himself.  This place is so in-bred they'll probably be someone here's cousin!  Not so different to court after all.

He checks that his crucifix is safely tucked inside his shirt and follows the crowd into the temple.

Finan ate his meal, carefully hid his pack in the sacristy, then borrowed some acolyte robes from the vestry.  He mingled with the crowd and remained as innocuous as possible during the Ceremony, observing those around him as a hawk observe his prey.

10:30, Today: Finan McRoach rolled 5 using 2d10. Perception.

The inner temple was a strange and unsettling place, though the locals did not seem to note it.

Within the walls was a slightly raised earthern mound surrounded by eight large roughly rectangular stones thrusting some 3m up out of the earth. A large thatched and daubed roof had been vaulted over the circle and Guillame had the feeling that the stones had been here much longer than any of the surrounding structures.

Guillame noted a familiar face almost immediately; the 'bishop' he had met with in the castle.  Though the man was dressed most differently.

The Arch-Druid gazed over the worshippers and seemed satisfied, he stood before another stone slab supported on two thick beams of oak. His dress was white though a short cloak of raven feathers covered his shoulders and a large brass pectoral inscribed with the image of a flame covered his chest.

An old man moved out of the crowd and stood before the holy man across the table. The elderly man was pale and sickly to look upon, a large growth jutted from his throat like some grotesque wattle. Slowly and painfully the old man knelt at the circles centre.

Suddenly, the stones became limed with flickering flames that danced upon their surface and the crowd bowed their heads; many of them cut locks from their hair and beards with small knives and cast the hair into the flames that limned the stones.

The Arch-Druid began to speak and Guillarme had trouble following what he was saying, it was certainly Visic but the sentence structures were strange and offputting.

He welcomed the people, he invited the Goddess into her temple and called upon her to watch over her children.

Two other men dressed in white robes carried two objects into the circle and placed them on the table. One was a Selentine era bronze statue of a woman carrying a lamp and a spear. The other was a black basalt statue, also of a woman but of fierce aspect and hunched with a stylized flame in her cupped hands. It was weathered and seemed ancient.

'Finan' watched the ceremony from within the crowd, it was as it always had been but old Bodhmall had a theatrical bent that seemed to be to the peoples liking.

He noted only worship and wonder on most of the faces, resignation on some and on a couple brief flashes of consternation and confusion. A couple of these were short sandy haired men who stood at the rear of the crowd, another was the man he had seen walking downhill earlier. It was likely they were simply country folk who had not visited the Temple before.

Finan cut a lock from his own hair and sent it into the fire with a silent prayer.
Like the Pheonix, I will rise up from the ashes of my clan and wreak great conflagration upon mine enemies.  This my vow...

Finan avoided the dignitaries and moved closer to the man he had seen earlier who looked a bit confused.
"You're from outside the kingdom?  I can explain what all this means if you would like?"
He acted like a helpful tour guide, here to explain the proceedings to the ignorant.

Guillaume silently said a prayer.  He watched the ceremony with interest.  Where were the blood sacrifices?  The crazed naked dancing?  The flaming rock was a nice touch, but nothing he hadn't seen done by court sorcerors back home.  Well it would all go in his next report.  No doubt the King would be horrified by such paganism but it didn't really bother Guillaume that much.  It might be a good idea to talk more with the druids later.

Guillaume used his mastery of Visic to put on the thickest accent he could.
"From the North... but i've been away for some time." 
He eyed the man, certainly a face to remember.  And those eyes felt like they could see all the way into his soul.  Still though, an ally in the Cult of Brigandia could be useful.
"Our worship is different, i'd be glad for you to explain the ceremony to me.  Perhaps we could get a drink - there should be some taverns open down by the docks."
Guillaume puts out his hand.
"Fingal McInnes, pleased to meet you"

Finan is ready for the unexpected, and wonders what he is missing here about this big country bumpkin...

"I've actually been much further south - over the Glaive and, Chaubrette and beyond.  Joined a mercenary company a few years ago but now i'm tired of that life and i'm returning to the clan lands in the North.  I've just recently arrived back - Glissom seems much the same, although I hear the King has taken a life of spiritual seclusion and the Steward is running things."

Guillaume leads the stranger outside the temple, and starts walking in the direction of the docks.

Hmmm... I think this guy might be on to me.  Better come clean at the tavern.

"Interesting.  I thought there was something about you beyond the ordinary.
Before we leave, I must return the robes I borrowed.  Wait for me outside."

Finan quickly visits the vestry to return his robes, and the sacristy to collect his pack.
This could be just the opportunity I need to keep.  Make some new friends and allies.  Stay alive...

As they exited there was a sudden dazzling burst of flame that roared up through a gap in the thatched roof, it was accompanied by a loud wailing from the crowd that was half exhaltation and half keen.



As he finishes up he notes that people are beginning to file out of the Temple.

Merde! Left just before it got interesting!  Guillaume leaps to the side, turns and looks back, trying to get a glimpse of what just happened.

"What was that?" he asks Finan.

Finan gets back to meet Fingal just as the Temple starts to empty.
"Just the Eternal Hearth Flame.  I've seen it before lots of time.  I would talk more but my throat is drying up... winks Finan.

The two men began to walk south from the Temple grounds, the majority of the worshippers drifted up slope back to their homes.

"I know this good Scrumpy House on Apple Lane, just round the corner.  Where are you staying Fingal?
It can get rough out after dark and you wouldn't want to walk too far with a skin full of cider!"

Finan kept his eyes and ears open, while pretending to be at ease.
23:23, Today: Finan McRoach rolled 14 using 2d10. Perception.

"I'm staying Dockside, I can take care of myself.  Tell me Finan, are you from the city, or are your clan lands further afield?"

Guillaume keeps walking southwards down the street, keeping a careful eye on the shadows, and also his companion.

The two men arrive at the small wood and daub building to find it quiet and occupied solely by a small clutch of aged men and the owner.  Apparently business has quietened since 'Finan' was last here...

" Welcome.", said the owner quietly. " Scrumpy? Cider? Or we've some mulled wine if you need warming."

OOC: Neither man observes anything more dangerous than a stray dog or two.

"Two Scrumpies and keep 'em coming!"  Finan gives a florin to the owner and takes a seat.

"So Fingal, where did we get to?" he pauses to gulp the strong sweet apple brew.

Guillaume sits opposite Finan and takes a sip of the scrumpy.

"Before we continue I must tell you something important." Guillaume leans closer to Finan, and checks that nobody is listening in.

"I am not actually Fingal McInnes, mercenary and Clansman from the north."

"Allow me to introduce myself.  My name is Guillaume De Morvan and I am the Ambassador to Glissom from Chaubrette!  Pardon my secrecy, but I 'ave an interest in your religion and it would not do for a representative of Chaubrette to be seen participating in a pagan ritual."

"Fingal McInnes, 'owever, can go places Guillaume de Morvan can not."  Guillaume grins and winks.

"You are a very observant person, I could tell that you thought there was something about my story that did not make sense."

"Perhaps now you can tell me a little of yourself?  I can see from your attire that you are a man of means, non?"

Finan smiles a thin smile of victory and supped his scrumpy.

"A pleasure to meet you.  You are wise to conceal your identity in certain circles.  Some people deeply resent the Southern Lands and the True Faith in particular.  We all have things which we would like to remain secret, and I will keep yours." takes another sup.

"You have a remarkable grasp of our tongue.  You regional accent is almost perfect, but no, you don't act like a peasant reiver.  Might I suggest a wool merchant?  They have money but are not bound by social convention.  You might avoid the same pitfalls again my friend.

I would be happy to tell you all you need to know about our religion.  I am a mendicant druid and am able to sustain a comfortable living by ministering to people across the countryside. Hand Fastings, Harvest Blessings, and other special services."

In reply to Finan McRoach (msg # 33):

Guillaume takes a sip of his cider.  "I 'ave a gift for languages, and a certain 'istory with your country.  Lets just say this isn't my first time in your cold, unforgiving land."

Guillaume leans back in his chair and strokes his chin.  "A wool merchant you say?  That would be the perfect cover... if there is something this country does not lack it is sheep."

"So you are a Druid!  I have met your Arch-Druid in a formal capacity - 'e seemed as cold and distant as yonder mountains.  I am glad to see that your Goddess' fire has warmed some of 'er flock."

Finan and Fingal drink and chat about Gliss Druidism and Chaubretton Politics until the Scrumpy kicks in.

"I had always thought I would live and die in Glissom, but now I see that I might need to travel like you.
To broarden my mind to other opportunities of course.  How might I be tolerated in the Southern lands?"

In reply to Finan McRoach (msg # 35):

"You'll be tolerated that is probably all.  If you 'ave money they might like you better.  Just don't tell them you are a Druid, the Church 'olds much power and you might get burnt as a witch."

Guillaume drains the rest of his drink and puts a Florin on the bar.  "The hour is late and I 'ave 'ad a long day.  I must retire.  If you do not 'ave somewhere to stay you are welcome to a room at my villa.  Just don't scare Old Nathan in the morning."

"You are indeed a gentleman, honest, kind, and generous.  I'd be happy to accept, lead on."
The first genuine smile crosses Finan's since Guillaume met him

NEXT MORNING

The two men rose a little late and Old Nathan was already pottering about the place, he seemed little surprised to see that there was a visitor.

" I've set out pickled herring, black bread and a bit o' Cullys Red for you, gentlemen."

" I'll be off market noo."

He left them alone with their repast...

"Merci, Nathan" Guillaume says as the old man leaves.

"I hope you slept well" he says to Finan, "please, eat what you will."

Guillaume sits and eats a hearty breakfast.  It is obvious that he enjoys his food, but he looks a little hung-over.

"My 'ead is still a little foggy after last night's scrumpy.  Perhaps a little sea air would help to clear it.  What plans do you have for the day, mon ami?"

"I am as free as a bird on the wing." Finan thinks.
"I want to remain unnoticed, and you want to understand the locals more.  Perhaps you could extend your Wool Merchant story by becoming a Merchant Venturer.  I could be your... agent in your employ?  They are so common here abouts, seeking new opportunities beyond the Shadowspin, that we would attract little attention?"

Guillaume's eyes widen. "Ha! Formidable! I do need to learn more about trade in these parts if I am to negotiate favourably for my King." He raises an eyebrow. "A Merchant Venturer you say? Per'aps you can explain more to me as we walk. I 'ave always found the merchant class to be vulgar, acting above their station as they do. But necessary nonetheless, and able to go all sorts of places without attracting attention."

Guillaume dresses in his local clothing and armour again. "I need a hat... Shall we go?"

Finan grabs his pack and cloak, following Fingal out.

"Merchant Venturers seek the prize in everything, the quick profit, the high risk gain.  They cannot rely on contacts, influence or breeding because they have none, but must make their own way in the world. I'm sure you have a word for it.  The Chaubrettons have a special word for everything!"

"That sounds ghastly, but okay." Guillaume leads the way through the streets, heading south.

"I would like to see if there are any Chaubrettan ships in port, per'aps they will 'ave news from 'ome.  By the way, why do you want to remain unnoticed?"

Finan looks deeply into Guillaumes eyes with his piercing emerald orbs.  With no humour whatever he said,
"If I told you that, I'd have to kill you.  Our secrets are now entwined my friend, like the roots of an ancient tree..."

That piercing stare again. This man is more dangerous than I thought.

"Pardon, monsieur. I shall, of course, respect your privacy."

Guillaume looks around. "Where are we?"

In reply to Guillaume De Morvan (msg # 45):

They had walked quite some way while they talked, their course had been mostly southward following one of the main throughfares and ignoring the right hand paths that led towards the West Gate and out of the city.

They found themselves in a large empty square;

A tiny chapel nestled incongruously beside the warehouse heavy with the reek of salted cod and pickled herring. Outside it was an old man dressed in an approximation of the robes of a priest of the True Faith.

He was reading through some journals on the stoop of the chapel.

Across the open square sat a group of fishermen eating rollmops, a large grey hound lay on the cobblestones outside the harbourmasters office.

Large rats sifted through scraps of refuse from the pickling houses; a large convoy of carts was slowly making its way west piled with the reeking flotsam from the nearby pickling houses.

A group of women waved to them from the open windows of a small shop above the blacksmiths; a small shrine to Brigantia sat outside the smithy, it was liberally decorated with silver coins.

"We are in Dockside, the market square.  This is the rough end of town so watch your step, and your tongue my friend.
The Harbourmaster might have foreign news if you want some?"

In reply to Finan McRoach (msg # 47):

"Thank you my friend, I shall be careful." Especially of the rollmops.

Guillaume motions towards the chapel. "This is the chapel I 'ave 'eard about." He looks it up and down. "It is not quite as grand as the churches back 'ome. I should introduce myself to the Father. Then maybe speak to the 'arbourmaster."

Yamousou sat quietly on a bench at the smithy. He enjoyed watching the burly blacksmith at work. Transforming metal into tools, horseshoes, weapons and so on was an artform he much admired.

He sipped at a mug of wine. The local vintages were poor compared to those that he had encountered in his travels, but they would suffice for now. As he drank he watched the crowds, his eyes flitting from person to person, reading each like a book. Some were ordinary, others unusual. Some ignored him, others stared back at his alien, dark skin. None spoke to him, preferring to leave him in silence. The smith was happy enough to leave him alone, busy in his own work.

A small group caught his eye, adventurers by the look of them. They included a strange looking fellow, with long red hair. His eyes lingered on them, questions rising about who thery were, what they were doing. I bet they have some stories to tell...

The old priest on the chapel stoop got up dusted himself off and entered the chapel taking his journal with him.

So much for my attempt to look like a local, now I need to be Guillaume.

Guillaume winks at the women in the shop above the blacksmiths.  A dark skinned man sitting at the smithy catches his eye.  An unusual sight in these parts, and dressed as a warrior.  Someone more foreign than me.  Guillaume walks over to the chapel and enters through the door, looking for the priest.

Guillame spots the old priest near the small makeshift altar at the back of the room, but his attention is mostly upon the larger well muscled man reading a manuscript on the closest pew.

The man looks up at Guillame and the Chaubrettan notes he is a middle aged man with long blond hair and beard. His eyes are piercing grey and his bearing betrays a former physical life. In truth his bearing seems more of a warrior than a priest.

" Welcome." He says in heavily accented Visic.

Father Jeffries hurries forward, a look of not quite recognition on his face...

" Hello, my son?"

In reply to GM (msg # 52):

Guillaume looks from one man to the other. "'Ello gentlemen." His eyes rest on the older man in the robes. "Father, I am glad to finally meet you. I am Guillaume de Morvan, official ambassador to Glissom for the King of Chaubrette. I apologise for not visiting earlier but 'ave been busy with official business." He gives the Father a warm smile and extends his hand. "It is good to find a 'ouse of God in this cold city."

Father Jefferies eyebrows shoot up and he looks around at the rather dishevelled appearance of the chapel with some dismay.

" Welcome, Ambassador. We..we do not get many of your high station visiting us."

" Though I have not been lonely for visitors lately."

" Forgive me, I am Father Jeffries and this is Brother Jacob."

Brother Jacob rose and took in Guillame measuredly, he raised an eyebrow at his dress.

In reply to GM (msg # 54):

"Please my friends, be at ease. I appologise for my attire - today I am trying to blend in with the folk of Glissom."

He smiles again with a twinkle in his eye.

"'Owever, when I noticed the chapel I thought I should introduce myself. It is proper for educated people to become aquainted, non?"

Guillaume turns to Brother Jacob. "You, Brother, do not speak the native tongue with as much familiarity as the Father.  You are the visitor the Father speaks of? What brings you to these lands?"

The older priest nods, still looking slightly shocked at the number of visitors he's had over the last twenty four hours.

" I am pleased to make your acquaintance."

Brother Jacob chewed on his lower lip and folded the vellum he was reading away.

Father Jeffries answered for him, " Brother Jacob was sent to assist me by the Bishop of Ongus.  He is but one of the visitors I have had recently."

" Is there any way I can assist you?"

Finan waited in the square, having not desire or interest in entering the church.  He tried to make himself inconspicuous.
As he waited for Guillaumes to return, he could not fail to notice the ebony warrior, a sight not seen very often at all!

Finan slowly approached the man with his customary thin smirk.
"You're not from around here, are you.  Finan McRoach, and can I be of service to you?"

"There is nothing in particular, Father.  I am merely making my introduction.  I 'ope if you meet any of my fellow countrymen you will let them know that I am 'ere to assist them.  I can be found at an old Selentine maison, Castleside.  Between the pagan temple and the Castle.  Of course I would also be pleased to receive a visit from yourself."

Guillamue strokes his moustache.  "It is well that Brother Jacob 'as arrived to assist you.  It is because more people of Glissom are being enlightened by the True Faith, non?"

" I would be pleased call on you, I do not get the opportunity to go Castleside all that often."

Father Jeffries chuckled, " My flock is small, and mostly consists of devout sailors from other shores passing through.  But there are some local folk who have come to service."

In reply to GM (msg # 59):

"I will not take up more of your time. I look forward to attending your service next 'aligdae. Per'aps I might 'ave some quiet prayer before I leave."

Guillaume sits at a pew and bows his head.

Outside.

'Finan' noted two men approaching from the east; one was tall and pale and wore dark robes the other was a man of noble bearing and martial aspect, they both seemed to be foreigners.

The dark skinned man smiled, revealing a full set of white teeth, some filed to a point, as was the custom with some heathen tribes from across the sea. He stood up, and offered his hand in the way he had seen others from this island do in greeting. He spoke good Visic, clearly leaned from a tutor rather than from the street. "Did you know that you are the first person to acknowledge my presence here all day?" He leaned forward, and whispered conspiratorially, "I think they are afraid that I will eat them." He chuckled softly at his little joke.

He tilted his head slightly and looked Finan up and down. "And you look like a man with many a fine tale to tell. Maybe I could treat you to a mug of wine. The local stuff isn't great, but it has a kick on it."

Bael and Kores approached the chapel, looking for Father Jeffries, so they could let him know that Willem had been found and should be safely home.

Bael pushed open the chapel door and found Father Jeffries and Brother Jacob reading from an illuminated manuscript.

A man was kneeling before one of the pews apparently deep in prayer.

"Father Jeffries! We have had success.  We found young Willem, recovering from injuries earnt through a gambling debt.  Thankfully Kores' was able to patch up the youth quite miraculously.  You may want to inform your flock to gamble amongst themselves if they must gamble."

Noting the other strangers, especially the Mungodan, Kores follows Bael.

"Have you found anything about that archaeological discover?  Who is the Mungodan outside?"

"HA!  You do't want to eat me, I wouldn't taste very nice." Laughed Finan loudly.
"And if it's stories you want well, I attract 'em like flies around honey.  Although I am native, I am a stranger in the Kingdom* too,
and like as not us strangers might find solace together eh?"
*The Kingdom is what the Gliss call the City Boundaries, the only true extent of the Kings authority in the land.

In reply to Kores Varias (msg # 66):

Disturbed from his prayer by the rather loud arrival of the other foreigners, Guillaume stands and watches the exchange.

Gambling, miracles and archeology? Formidable! This will be interesting! More exciting than meetings with minor merchants anyway.

In reply to Finan McRoach (msg # 67):

Yamousou grinned. He liked this odd looking man already. "Maybe we will! A fine pair we will look too!"

Father Jeffries indicated the man at prayer and held his finger to his lips.

He approached and spoke quietly, " A gambling debt? Hmmm, that is strange. The Crown and Anchor is the centre of gambling here. I did not know that there were gambling dens in Eagle Alley."

He raised an eyebrow at the description of miraculous healing.

" Are you a saint, Kores? I think not. Perhaps I am suffering from some mild deafness because of my age? Yes.  I think that is probably for the best."



" Always with your eye on the prize, Kores.", he chuckled.

" We have found the records, forgive me..my filing system is more of an art than a science. Suffice to say I believe I know which merchants have handled some of the discovered pieces, the rest have been taken by the Castle as heirlooms and state property.  I believe either of those parties would be able to connect you with those who found them."

Father Jeffries looked confused by the final question, " Whats a Moon Goudan?"

*Raises an annoyed eyebrow at Bael*

"Saint?  No...  No miracles, just basic treatment of a mild burn, the child already had his hands in a barrel of cold water.  We just needed to encourage him the wounds were not as severe."

"Do you have a contact person with the Merchants?  Or at the Castle for that matter?"

"Mungodan.  Mung-Goh-Dahn.  That dark gentleman has travelled many months North, I wonder why..."


If Father Jeffries can disclose the name of the key contact persons, Kores will then approach the Mungodan and ask him why he comes up to Ellesland, or Glissom for that matter.....

"Do you have any business here?  If not, I have a proposition.  I am currently in the employ of the tall man I entered the square with.  He seems a good man, honest, honourable, and in need of protection from the thousands of thieves and brigands in the city.  He is also interested in foreign culture and the like.  You'de probably get on and there might be regular meals in it?  What say you?"

In reply to Finan McRoach (msg # 72):

"I say lead on, friend! I have no agenda here, I just go where my mood takes me. I can look after myself in a scrap with ruffians, and the opportunity for a bit of spare coin is always appealing."

He downed the last of his wine, and then prepared to follow the strange red-haired man.

Guillaume brushes his hair from his face and smoothes his moustache. He looks down at his attire. Why did I let that red haired Druid convince me to don my disguise again today? Too bad, I will just have to make do.

Guillaume takes a step forward and clears his throat. "Gentlemen. I believe I may be of assistance. Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Guillaume de Morvan and I am the new Ambassador to Glissom for the King of Chaubrette." He bows slightly, and pauses for dramatic effect. "As such, I 'ave met some within the castle, including the Steward and members of the Council of Elders and some merchants. But first, tell me more about these artifacts..." His eyes widen in anticipation.

Father Jeffries quickly described some notes upon some parchment and pressed them into Kores' hands.

He then sat again and described the same information onto another piece of parchment but hesitated as to who he should hand it to.

Guillaume watches open mouthed as Kores walks past him and out of the Chapel. So rude!

He then takes the note from Father Jeffries and quickly reads it. "Merci, Father. Where were these found? Do they 'ave some special significance?"

Kores bustled past everyone and out the chapel door, hurrying across the square to the smithy he thrust himself into the conversation between Finan and Yamousou.

"You must have travelled far.  Are you looking for something in particular in the lands of Glissom?"




" He is rather driven, isn't he?", Father Jeffries tutted by way of apology on Kores' behalf.

" I do not know where they were found, this is simply the information my parishioners have brought me."

" As to their significance, I am unsure. At least some of them seemed to be of dietys other than Brigantia from what I was told."

"So what interest do your parishioners have in these items? And the... driven one, what is his interest?"

" My parishioners? They have little interest, I've simply asked them to keep an ear to the ground about 'intersting happenings'. It pays to be forewarned, more strident men of the True Faith than me have come here before.  They tended to disappear or end up affixed to frames and tossed into bonfires."

" Kores? I do not know rightly. He seems to be driven by something dark.....and as Bael has mentioned he has mysteries of his own. I believe he may be something of a hunter....though I'm not sure what his prey may be."

Yamousou turned to address the strange looking man, and gracefully ignored his rude interruption. He smiled enigmatically. "Some would say I have travelled the world. Others, that I have barely started my journey."

He turned to face Kores, looking him up and down in an effort to glean some knowledge of the odd fellow. "As I was explaining to my flame-haired friend here, I am a collector of stories. I came to this land to learn what there is to learn, and to take my stories back to the Master."

Finan looks this even stranger man up and down, glances at Yamousou and winks.
"I have come from Castleside, as short walk indeed.  My friend here hasn't moved all day.  What we seek in particular is lunch..."

Yamousou let out a deep laugh. "Lunch sounds like a very good idea!" He looked around in a pantomime style at all the locals in the square. With a grin on his face he returned the wink. "Now, which one will we eat?"

"Ah, stories indeed.  So many of lifes experiences which if not documented would be wasted.  Times change, great ages of civilizations die down.  Perhaps you are familiar with the Selentine?  Without their influence, these lands would be inhabited by no more than stone wielding savages...."

"But even before their great influence, literacy, medical knowledge, construction of roads and other structures there were many old 'Gods'...  Beings of great power whose influence can still be traced.  The way I see it, they are part of us already, their dark influence can be 'felt'.  Between the great 'civilizing' influence of the Selentine and these ancient 'gods' men must search for the truth...  I believe I am close to discovering their whereabouts, perhaps even establish whether they are actively operating in Glissom..."

"I know not what will come about of it, but perhaps you might join me...  For now?  And maybe you can share some of your stories with me."

"Perhaps we can visit the Crown and Anchor Inn?"

*Looks to Bael, the Frog and the Carrot head*

After pausing slightly awkwardly in front of Guillaume, Bael raises his eyebrows and scuttles off after Kores.



Catching the last half of Kores' story and understanding far less than half of it, Bael's eyes light up when he hears talk of visiting an inn.

"Hello, my name is Bael," he said, leaning forward to shake the hands of Yamousou and Finan.

Guillaume watches Bael's back as he walks out the door. "I see."

He turns back to Father Jeffries. "It seems my offer of assistance was not welcome. Cest la vie. I will take my leave, Father. God be with you."

I wonder what Finan is up to. Guilllaume walks outside the chapel and heads over to the group.

"I did not catch your name, Sir" he says to Bael.

Father Jeffries smiled kindly, " Go in peace my son."

He turned to Brother Jacob, " Will you help me prepare for tomorrows sermon?"

"Hello, my name is Bael," Bael said, leaning forward to shake the hand of Guillaume.

Finan shakes the eager hand of Bael.
"I am Finan.  Please to meet so many friendly people in one place."

"Ah, would you take an interest in Archaelogical discoveries?  The present and future is built on the past.  The very tongue we speak a derivative of Bacchile whose influence is all too apparent.  However I heard that certain artifacts seem to indicate an older origin, before the expansion of the Selentine empire reached this far north the people worshiped many 'Gods'.  Many of which were merely powerful entities that became gods in their own right.  Any of us present could take advantage with our superior knowledge and technologies.  A knight in shining armour might be recognized as a shining bright god amongst stone aged primitives."

Yamousou introduced himself to all comers, pleased that he was no longer the strangest person in the square.

"Indeed, this land does show a Selentine influence but more so an older one as you say.  The language and script Mercanian, but the religion older still.  Just last night I observed a ritual in the Temple of Brigantia that was probably centuries old. Finan 'ere could tell you more."

Guillaume nods to the others and shakes the hands of Bael and Yamousou.

To Kores: "What is it about the artifacts found 'ere recently that interests you in particular?"

In reply to Guillaume De Morvan (msg # 94):

"As yet I have not located these artifacts, but I would be interested in any 'gods' that are not human.  The Mercanians and Emphidians worshiped those that resembled any other men or women.  But the alien, the unnatural looking may reveal the hideous servants of the Prince of Darkness!  Their rites include human sacrifices to their dark gods.  Perhaps these rituals still simulate the processes of human sacrifice, a reminder of their wicked past."

"Perhaps later we can observe these rituals.  Who is to say that human sacrifice is not still happening, perhaps even with consent of the authorities?"

*Smirk*

"Let us head to the Inn for now, I am sure we can continue such discussions under more suitable circumstances."

*Glances back at Father Jeffries and the church interior*

In reply to Kores Varias (msg # 95):

"I will meet you there, I would like to return 'ome to change into more suitable attire."

Guillaume will head back to his house so he can change out of his disguise, then head back to the Crown and Anchor.

Finan tips Yamousou the wink and follows Guillaume out of the square.
"Master, I have made a new friend.  He is a story teller who may compliment your Merchant nicely and has other obvious benefits."

[OOC - We gotta get outta there, or the overload of weirdness might tear a hole in the time space continuum.]

Curious to see where this new path will take him, Yamousou followed Finan.

"Master...? Tres bien! I like the sound of that!" Guillaume chuckles.  "I'm sure I can do with a new manservant, both as Guillaume and Fingal McInnes.  Although with my meagre allowance I won't be able to pay a salary!"



"Come along my friends, we will meet the others at the Inn after I have returned 'ome to change." Guillaume leads the other two through the streets back to his maison.

What a strange sight we will make.

The trio made their way back through the streets of Glissom towards Castleside; they passed a large number of labourers as they moved by the street leading to West Gate.

Further on they turned through the Temple district and began the short climb up the hill towards Guillames billet.

Old Nathan was out the front and he waved casually as he pretended to sweep the steps leading to the door.

He squinted as they drew closer and they noted the look of confusion on his face as he beheld Yamousou.

" More guests, Master Guillame?"

In reply to GM (msg # 100):

"Indeed Nathan, I now 'ave two guests. I 'ave engaged Finan McRoach, who you 'ave already met, as an agent and advisor on local matters. 'e will be staying here from time to time." Guillaume indicates Yamousou. "Master Yamousou is a visiting dignitary from the southern continent. I am pleased to offer him my 'ospitality."

Guillaume leads the two men inside. "You may stay for a while, but I can not allow my 'ouse to become an inn. I may have to entertain visitors from Chaubrette or local lords."

Yamousou followed along, curious to see where this path would take him. He appeared relaxed, but was ready to act if the friendly pair turned out to be less than genuine.

Arriving at the house, he nodded at the old man making a poor job of sweeping the steps. He smiled. It was a job he did daily as a boy, and had taken pride in doing a good job.

In reply to Yamousou (msg # 102):

Finan and Yamousou took their leisure while Guillame busied himself in his room changing into clothing more fitting for an Ambassador.

Blowing out the door he checked the location of Ciarans workshop with Nathan and then ushered the other two along with him as he swept down the stairs and turned right.

Moving closer to the Fort as they moved through Castleside they soon came to the Workshop.

Ciarans is the ground floor of a large two-storey house, with thick stone walls, snug against the walls of the Fort.

A truly massive dark haired man with arms like tree trunks stands outside talking with an old man wrapped in blue and grey plaid with great brass rings in his ears.

Within the shadowed doorway stand two serious looking men dressed in maille and with a sword and shield leaning against the wall at their feet.

A hanging board displays a large number of small pieces of gold jewellery hanging from pegs.

In reply to GM (msg # 103):

Guillaume adjusts his clothing and enters the doorway, nodding to the large man and old man as he passes them.

He clears his throat and addresses the guards, trying to sound as important as he can.  "I am Guillaume de Morvan. I would like to speak with Master Ciaran."

He examines the jewelry while he waits.

Yamousou hung back, leaving Guillaume to do the talking. He wasn't certain of the purpose of this housecall, and didn't want to get in the way.

In reply to Guillaume De Morvan (msg # 104):

The large man turned, holding out a hand as wide as the span of both Guillames put together.

" I am Ciaran.  How may I be of service?"

Finan stayed back too.  He did not want to risk being recognised.

Guillaume takes the man's hand and tries not to wince in expectation of his vice-like grip.  "I am pleased to make your aquaintance.  I am the newly arrived Ambassador from Chaubrette and I 'ave 'eard of your establishment from some merchants I 'ave met.  An... aquaintance of mine 'as an interest in some artifacts that may 'ave recently entered your collection."  He looks around at the jewelry, then back to Ciaran. "Some gold and silver plates, unadorned.  If you 'ave these items I would be interested in seeing them."

Guillaume watches Ciaran carefully, trying to gauge his reaction when the artifacts are mentioned.

Ciarans grip was disconcertingly light for such a large man.

Ciaran smirked slightly, " Whilst I would be interested to know who is taking such a close interest in my affairs I've no reason to refuse such a polite request from an esteemed personage."

" And his most intriguing housecarls.", he finished; nodding at Finan and Yamousou.

" Come in."

Ciaran led Guillame inside and over past the smelting pots and work benchs, " These are the ones your after?"

Guillame noted two more armed men seated on stools at the rear of the workshop.

" I've checked them over for markings, stamps and the like but I've found nothing.  They all appear well used though, there are stains and scratches all over them."

" I was going to melt them out for use in some commisions I've received.."

Guillaume nods and smiles, pleased to be treated in a manner that befits his station.



"Even in this fine city it is wise to be safe.  I can see you 'ave the same opinion.  These men are also my companions and advisors."



Guillaume picks up a bowl and gives it a detailed inspection, trying to figure out what might have made the marks and stains.  "I see, quite unremarkable."  He puts the bowl down.  "I am acting as a favour for this associate of mine.  It may be that 'e is more interested in where the items came from.  'e is a... 'istorian of sorts.  I would be extremely grateful if you can tell me where they were found?"

Guillaume looks over at the smelting pots.  "So the only value these 'ave for you is in the raw material, non?"

In reply to Guillaume De Morvan (msg # 108):

" As to where they were found I did not enquire but they were brought into the city on a cog owned by the foreigner, uh, the other foreigner.....Albion Import...Etienne, I think his name is."

" Folks round here just call him the Foreigner, cos there aren't too many round these parts.  Usually...."

Yamousou followed Guillaume inside. He stayed cool, aware that the man Ciaran has several large thugs available for protection, and if this conversation got messy he could well be drawn into a fight that was not his own. Nevertheless, he was here and had agreed to accompany this pair, so they could at least expect his support if things got nasty.

Guillaume chuckles.  "I think we may have exceeded your quota of foreigners for the day."

"Thank you for your help.  Perhaps you know where I might find this Etienne?  Around the docks I presume, non?"

"Before I leave I would be interested in perusing your wares."    Guillaume will look over Ciaran's work before he leaves, if he is not bustled out by the big man.

' Aye, you can't miss the sign. Down past West Gate towards the waterside."

" Feel free to look around, I'd be happy for your custom."

Guillaume leaves the workshop and starts walking through the streets towards the docks.

"Tell me Finan, 'ave you seen bowls like that before? Do you use such items in your rituals?"

Finan considered the question carefully before answering.

"They appear to be unremarkable, other than being gold."

"Unremarkable? That is..." Guillaume turns and looks at Finan, his eyes narrowing, "...exactly what I thought!"

Guillaume lets out a hearty laugh. "Let us find this scholar and tell him what we have found. Somehow I suspect he will be looking for a partner for an expedition. We shall see." To Yamousou, "it might make a good story for your collection, mon ami."

Yamousou grinned, his sharp teeth shining. "A new adventure would be fun. I am happy to accompany you."

In reply to Yamousou (msg # 119):

The three of them made their way south through the ever growing crowds, most of whom gave the rich foreigner and his fierce looking bondsmen a wide birth.

They made their way to the Docks and soon found the large edifice of the Crown and Anchor before them. A small group of sailors scowled at them as they approached but made no move to stop them.

In reply to GM (msg # 120):

Guillaume's usual jolly expression slowly drops from his face as he surveyed the front of the Crown and Anchor. This brings back some bad memories.

"Ahem." Guillaume clears his throat. "I do not like the look of this common 'ouse. Per'aps one of you would be so kind as to see if our friends are inside?"

"A very wise decision, my friend.  Why don't you wait here with our ebony friend."

Finan checks his purse and pack, tugs his hood low and enters the Crown and Anchor.
Shouldn't be too difficult to find the mad old wizard with the attitude problem around here.

Finan entered to little comment or indeed notice, and certainly no recognition.  A quick scan of the crowd revealed a few folks playing Mumbly Peg and Crown and Anchor but no sign of the other foreigners.

Finan goes to the bar, fishes out a florin and orders a half pint of small beer from the innkeep.
"Looking for a mad foreigner with loose lips.  He owes me money.  Seen him?"

' Aye, was in here earlier with a priest of the hanged god and some southern lordling...he left with a Clansman though, reiver by the looks of him."

" Not too long past?"

Finan nods, "A Priest you say, the one from Castle Side?  Just gone too, I'll be on my way then, many thanks."
Finan drains the beer and leaves the florin on the bar for payment of services.  <1 Florin struck from purse>

He'll take a long slow look at the patrons around before leaving to inform Guillaume of the same.

"Thank you. Let's check for them at the chapel."

Yamousou followed the other two. He was clearly getting his dose of exercise today!

Guillame made his way up towards the Keep attracting even more attention than usual for the flamboyant Chaubrettan.

Finan discovered that no one paid him the least amount of attention with Yamousou walking at his side; he was in effect able to hide in plain sight.

Yamousou as usual found himself the centre of shocked glances, disbelief, confusion and not a few wondering glances from some of the local ladies.

The Ambassador and his striking housecarls were waved through the main gates and into the enclosure.

Immediately on their right was the massive Kings Tower in which King Durindar was seeing out his seclusion.

Before them the barracks and stables and to the right of them the great mead hall where Guillame usually met with the Steward and others.

As the trio approached the mead hall they were stopped by a group of the kings housecarls bearing axes and furtrimmed cloaks.

A grizzled captain, ( Glimm, Guillame recalled ) stepped forward, " Sorry, Your Honour. I must ask you and your....housecarls to remain here for the moment. The Steward is entertaining visitors from Ereworn and it would seem negotiations are less than friendly at this moment."

He indicated a great boulder off to the right, " Would you care to sit awhile with us simple men, it shouldn't be much longer."

Guillaume raises an eyebrow. "Ereworn? That sounds entertaining, I trust it won't be long before your services are required inside, Captain Glimm." Guillaume chuckles, "we know 'ow these negotiations can be, just call out if you require any assistance from my 'ousecarls."

He looks from the captain to the boulder then back again. "A rock, 'ow lovely. Of course we will wait at the Lord Steward's pleasure."

Glimm frowned, " Beggin' your pardon, Your Honour. But I bloody well hope I'm not needed, seems they have a different idea about what an ambassador is in Ereworn. That lot look more like an invasion than an invitation."

He grinned, " The blemished chaps pleasant enough but , the other two, one of them looks like he did his share of reiving in his younger days and the ambassador himself well he has this way of looking at you like he knows what your thinking...well that and he looks like he bites the heads off rabbits for breakfast."

Yamousou was a patient man, so was happy to park himself on the rock and wait. As he did so he smiled back at the ladies whose attention he had attracted. Female companionship was always a welcome diversion.

"I prefer lapin a la cocotte, but never for breakfast."

Guillaume looks over at the door to the mead hall.

"This is an official delegation? I thought Ereworn was a lawless land, the King long since gone and no central authority, n'est ce pas?"

" It seems things have changed. They said they represent the new High King, a King Corbin. Castle Ereworn has been reclaimed from the usurper Darian and they even claim to have banished whatever evil it was that was darkening the kingdom."

" I would claim its childrens stories but we have had reports from the southern holdings of troubles near the borders. If Ereworn has driven out ancient evil then I would think at least some of it has settled in Glissom."

" Still, probably just forces loyal to this Darian or whoever he was."

This turn of events was concerning.  At least with Duke Darian you knew what to expect.  Now a new High King had arisen?
Not been one of those for centuries, and it implied soveriegnty over all of Ellesland!?!?

"Interesting tidings indeed!  I 'ope for peaceful relations between Glissom and Ereworn.  If this King Corbin calls himself the 'igh King 'e might 'ave delusions of grandeur that are not shared by 'is neighbours." 

I should learn more and inform my masters of these developments.

Guillaume takes a seat on the boulder and stretches out his long legs.  To his companions: "What do you think, my friends?  'Ave either of you journeyed to Ereworn in recent times?"

Glimm ordered a page to bring over some bread, cheese and ham for the party while they waited.

"Merci!  Your 'ospitality is commendable, Caption Glimm."  Guillaume helps himself to a generous portion.

Yamousou thanked the page when he returned with a platter of food. It was simple fayre, but plentiful. He helped himself to a selection and started to eat. Despite his hunger he ate at a moderate pace, trying to at least appear civilised.

Finan served himself some food and rested against the rock.  He quietly advised his patron.

"I am not familiar with this High King Corbin.  The title is an ancient one and doesn't mean much.
Corbin could be anyone, a robber knight, a minor noble or some such."

The doors to the mead hall swung open and three figures stormed out of it;

The one in the lead was a hulk of a man with Erewornian features and many battle-scars and a shaved head. He wore the livery he was dressed in uncomfortably, and the shining silver maille beneath his tabard and the rather tattered looking boar-hide cloak with its hood ( formed from the head of a great black boar)spoke to a lifetime of battle and rustic living. He bore a great hunting spear in his right hand clutched in a maille glove, both bore the crest of Ereworn.

The other man was bearded and blond of hair and almost of a size with him but shaggier of aspect; dressed in plaid and furs with a great axe ( similar to those carried by the housecarls)and shield strapped across his back. He was missing teeth at the front but he smiled casually at his companions bluster.

The third was younger and slighter with long brown hair which hung over his face almost obscuring the purple birthmark that covered the left hand side of his face. He carried a long sword at his side and was wrapped in a scarlet cloak. He appeared to be attempting to talk down his hulking companion.

" Lord Diarmud, we have succeeded in our mission. Please be happy with that, King Corbin will be pleased with our work."

The larger man growled almost animalistically, " He lied, he was lying to my face. And don't call me Lord, Strawberry. It ill fits me, despite Corbins honour."

" It doesn't matter that he was lying, we got what we came for.  Oh, there are others here?"

The one they called Strawberry came forward to greet Guillame, " Good day, Sirs. My name is Cene. We are come from Ereworn on a mission for our king."

" You are not locals either, I gather?", his eye lingered on Yamousou but for a moment.

The hulking man tugged on his shoulder rather spoiling his attempt at courtly conduct.

" Strawberry! That mans skin is the colour of dark waters! Is he accursed?"

Cene grimaced but attempted to keep his smile fixed.

Guillaume stands when the doors open and the men emerge.  He quickly swallows the bread in his mouth and adjusts his clothes, then takes a couple of steps forward.



"Good day to you, gentlemen."  Guillaume gives the smallest of bows. "You are correct, I am not a local.  I am Guillaume to Morvan.  It seems we 'ave something in common, as I am also on a mission from my King.  I am the Ambassador to Glissom from Chaubrette."

A thin smile comes to his face as he indicates Yamousou.  "My aide, Master Yamousou is not accursed, only a native of far away Mungoda."  Guillaume indicates Finan.  "My local advisor, Finan McRoach."

"A King in Ereworn?  This is news to me.  May I offer my congratulations to your King.  Will you be staying in Glissom long?"  More quietly, "I could not 'elp but overhear that you succeeded in your mission, but it would be a shame to anger the Steward's 'ousecarls with accusations of false'oods while in his courtyard, non?  There are better places to discuss such things."

" Chaubrette?", Cene coloured. " Oh, so sorry to have delayed your meeting."

" Ereworn would be most interested in re-aquiring relations with such an important trading partner as Chaubrette. Please mention us in your reports."

He turned back towards his more martial companions, " Mungoda, Diarmud. It is a land far to the south...I believe."

" Forgive my companion, he has never left the borders of Ereworn before this week."

Diarmud frowned but gave them what was probably supposed to be a friendly grin, albeit one that was somewhat predatory in nature.

Cene nodded at Guillames words, " We are departing for home tomorrow, there is still much work to be done and most of us are more suited to killing than courtly pleasantries.  Our land is free of the taint which almost destroyed it utterly and we have put an end to schemes that would have seen the malaise spread across Ereworn but the day to day business of running the kingdom is more a work in progress at this point."

" Do not concern yourself with our conduct; Steward Kilnded has made clear he cares little for opinion only results. We have secured safe anchorage and a resumption of trade with Glissom and that is all we need for now."

" Kilnded considers my companion an oaf, but there are depths to the Boar that he does not know of. It matters little."

" I've delayed you long enough. My apologies."

Guillaume nods and smiles.  "Indeed, Chaubrette is a willing trading partner... for the right goods.  I will of course inform my masters of this news.  Per'aps when Ereworn is a bit more settled an official visit could be arranged.  I am sure my King would appreciate me providing a first 'and account."

"No delay, rather an interesting distraction."  Guillaume makes a small bow again.  "It has been a pleasure to make your acquaintance and I wish you a safe journey 'ome.  Lord Diarmud, Master Cene."

Guillaume turns to his companions.  "Shall we attend to the Lord Steward now?"

Glimm came forward and greeted Guillame again as the Erewornian party departed.

He led them up and inside, seemingly untroubled by Finan and Yamousou retaining their weapons....the two men soon saw why.

The mead hall was wide and smelled of smoky oak and honey; a raised viewing area sat at the back of the hall and the kings throne and the smaller regents chair beside it sat upon a dais.

Kilnded was wrapped warmly in sable furs and a gray tunic and hose, he had his long dark hair pulled back into a plait and he was not seated on the stewards chair but rather waved Guillame over to the nearest feasting table.

" We'll talk here. I was not expecting to see you today Ambassador. I see you have followed local custom and acquired housecarls for yourself.....though with your own flair for the unusual."

" Mine are a little more 'traditional'", he smiled and indicated the two hulking local brutes lounging at the rear of the room. Several more housecarls, though not of such impressive physique sat at the far end of the feasting table.

" Do not stand on ceremony my friend, sit...sit."

" How may I help you?"

Yamousou kept his silence, happy to play the part of ignorant manservant for now. As he was introduced he offered a broad smile to his hosts, displaying his sharpened teeth.

Finan kept his head down in defferrance, avoiding any eye contact with the Steward at all times.  It pleased the Pyromancer that the old Steward seemed not to notice the viper in his bussom.  Kilnded was indeed arrogant and this would be his undoing...

"Lord Steward." Guillaume bows deeply. "Forgive me, old 'abits die 'ard."

"My 'ousecarls, oui. I have learnt that it is a symbol of prestige in Glissom.  May I present my aide, Master Yamousou of Mungoda, and Finan McRoach, my advisor on local matters and customs."

He takes a seat at the table. "I met the Erewornian party. An interesting choice for a diplomatic mission. But it is good to 'ave a neighbor that can keep the peace in their own land, n'est-ce pas?"

Kilnded nodded to Yamousou and Finan in turn taking little notice of either of them...though Yamousou still received a raised eyebrow.

" My men, Phun and Mut.  Not the sharpest tools in the shed but exceedingly loyal."

" Ereworn, Yes.  I got the feeling they were chosen more as reward for their actions in the liberation than for any real ability as Ambassadors."

" Though Cene shows promise."

Kilnded poured mead for himself and Guillame, " It is good to have ones neighbours at peace.  But it is better to have peace in ones own home......thankfully the Reivers have been quiet these past twelve months.  For the most part."

" But what brings you calling?  Surely I am not that interesting a conversationalist."

Guillaume feigns a look of shock.  "My Lord, you do yourself a disservice."  He raises his cup. "To the King."  Guillaume takes a healthy quaff.

"But you are right, I do 'ave another reason for this visit.  I 'ave been developing an interest in the 'istory and culture of Glissom.  I 'ave 'eard about a recent finding of some artifacts to the north, near Lacklaw.  These artifacts were brought to the City by the Albish merchant Etienne, and I understand that you 'ave recently acquired some of them.  Amulets, statues.  At the risk of being presumptuous, I would very much like to be'old them.  If it is not an inconvenience for my Lord."

Guillaume looks to Kilnded expectantly.

Kilnded looked surprised, " I hadn't realised you had such an interest on our history and culture."

" Of course you may look at the objects; they are little more than knick-knacks really. But interesting regardless."

" I did not know that the purchase had become common knowledge.  Some of the more superstitious among the common folk believe that it is against the old laws to remove such items from their resting places.  Superstition, of course. Still, I would appreciate your disgression."

" It is best to keep the populace onside.", he chuckled.

" Shall we look at them now? They are just in my quarters."

"I would be 'onoured, if my Lord does not have more pressing engagements." Guillaume takes another drink. "My scholar friend is interested as well, but per'aps if I see them I may save my Lord the, err, pleasure of his company. 'E as more experience with books than people, if you take my meaning."

Guillaume has warmed up and is quite enjoying his favourite pastime - talking. "Does my Lord know anything more about the site where the artifacts were found? Near Lacklaw i've 'eard. Was it a tomb of some kind?"

" I do not.", Kilnded rose and led Guillame to the main door.

" Leave your men here, they can chat about swords or whatever with my men while we're gone."

" Who is this scholar friend of yours?", he asked lightly.

" Yes, near Lacklaw. I'm not sure about the site itself. From the nature of the objects I would assume it was a shrine or temple but it may have been a tomb."

He headed towards his quarters....

Guillaume stands and turns to Finan and Yamousou. "Please wait, I shall not be long."


He turns and follows Kilnded. "The scholar is Kores Varias of Breylack. 'E is interested in ancient religions and idolatry. My interest is in Glissom's 'istory, but it seems our interests coincide at the moment."

Finan makes himself comfortable near the fire, casting Yamousou a quizical glance.

Kilnded led Guillame outside and to the left up the stairs to his own quarters.

" Kores Varias? He is not known to me.", Kilnded opened the door to his quarters and waved Guillame inside.

The room was large and airy and divided into sections by a number of standing screens, across from the door was a desk and chair with a number of articles arranged on the desk.

- A torch bracket shaped in the form of a bestial claw made of a mix of gold and silver.
- Two stone statues of kneeling male figures with curving horns over their brows and goats hooves, their arms were outstretched.
- A heavy gold plaque with a stylized labyrinthine design.
- A massive copper coiled statue?/figure? reminiscent of a leafless tree; it terminated in a stump with a fist sized hollow in it.

Kilnded waved his hand towards the desk, " Here they are."

Yamousou returned Finan's look with a brief smile. Guillaume seemed smart enough not to get into too much mischief, so the Mungodan stayed put and enjoyed the hospitality. He waved at a serving wench, trying to get some wine rather than ale.

"Mon Dieu!"  Guillaume crosses himself as he approaches the desk.

"Magnifique!  This is an impressive collection your Lordship."  Guillaume inspects the items.  He attempts to remember as many details as possible.

"Are you aware if these items 'old any special significance?  Minor deities?  Or something darker per'aps?"

Guillaume indicates the copper coiled statue.  "This one is most unusual.  I can't understand its purpose."  He reaches towards the statue.  "May I?"

" Of course."

Kilnded shrugged, " The statues I believe represent the Fomorians who feature in the old stories as living in the north in an earlier age, much like the ogres and the like of the southern lands."

" The torch bracket appears to be decorative."

" I am unsure about what the plaque represents and as you say I am flummoxed as to the purpose of that object."

The young page boy with the long blonde hair and beardless chin seemed hesitant to approach the sable skinned warrior but nodded and went to fetch a flask of elderberry wine.

Mut and Phun watched them in their own lazy fashion, reminding Finan of two great deer hounds, sleek from too many table scraps but having not lost the ferocity of the hunt.

The other housecarls amused themselves with dice and gossip paying no heed to the two strangers.

When the elderberry wine arrived, Yamousou thanked the serving boy for his hospitality and held up a glass, drinking in the aroma with his wide, broad-nostrilled nose. This was no rare vintage, but it would suffice. His host wouldn't waste the good stuff on a housecarl, so he was content.

He took a sip, then nodded to the boy. "My compliments to your cellar. This is most palatable."

As the boy scurried away he looked over at Finan. "Do you think our lord and master will find anything of interest?" he enquired with a grin.

"If you like I could ask scholar Varias to visit to offer 'is opinion."

Guillaume touches the copper statue, runs his hands over the surface and feels inside the hollow.  He then straightens up and turns to Kilnded.

"Thank you my Lord, it has been a very educational visit.  You have certainly acquired some fine objects.  I 'ope I 'ave not taken up too much of your time."

" This Varias, is he knowledgable about such things?  I've entertained a few charlatans in past years who have wanted a share of Glissoms gold for fanciful tales and false claims of scholarship."

He notes Guillames investigation of the copper object, " Perhaps there were other parts that have been lost to time, parts composed of more perishable substances? Perhaps we will never know."

" Thankyou for your visit, it is always good to speak with a man of culture." 

"I would not want to waste your time with this scholar if 'e is not genuine.  Per'aps if your Lordship will allow it I can make a likeness of the plaque, using some cloth and charcoal or similar?  I will show this to Varias and see if 'e 'as anything of substance to add."

If agreeable to Kilnded Guillaume will request some materials from a servant and make a copy of the plaque, then return to the mead hall.

"There is always some thing to find if you look hard enough.  Sometimes it is best not to look my friend."
Finan eyed Mut and Phun carefully.  These two would die hard...

Guillaume returned to the meadhall bearing a piece of thin fabric, Kilnded could be seen outside crossing the enclosure to enter the Kings Tower.

In reply to GM (msg # 167):

"Thank you for waiting, I 'ave finished my audience with the Lord Steward.  Lets go and meet with the others."

Guillaume notices Finan's hard stare.  "Unless you 'ave some unfinished business?"

Finan muses as they prepare to leave and comments quietly to Guillaume,
"Where is the King?  I haven't seen or heard of him since we arrived..."

Guillaume replies quietly.  "The King 'as not been seen for some months now.  I understand 'e is on some kind of spiritual 'ermitage in the tower.  The Lord Steward seems to be ruling in the King's stead."

Guillaume makes to leave the castle.  "Come, I will tell you what I saw while we walk."

Guillaume will recount to Finan and Yamousou the artifacts that he studied in Kilnded's chambers.

Yamousou finished his wine and departed with the others. As the walked he spoke quietly. "It sounds like the pieces were of some interest. Do you think Kores will be able to decipher the inscription?"

On hearing that the king was on a spiritual retreat, "It sounds like there is a power struggle going on. It might get messy. Maybe we should depart before it spills out. Civil wars are nasty businesses, brother on brother, neighbour on neighbour. I have seen it before, and there are no true winners."

The gate guards appeared too distracted by a plume of smoke down by the docks to heed Yamousous words....perhaps for the best.

They three of them made their way down the hill towards the town....

Finan glares at Yamousou and hisses a reprimand.
"Some words are best not spoken aloud, especially in the street.  We will discuss these artefacts later..."

Distracted by the plume of smoke
"Oh, weren't the others going to the docks to find Greylock?  Perhaps we should hurry on there ourselves!"

Yamousou nodded, he would hold his tongue in future.

As they walked down the hill, he watched the smoke rising. "Why do I have the feeling that if we head to the source of the blaze we will find our companions."

Guillaume quickens his pace.  "I 'ope you are not right, mon ami."

Once back in the hustle and bustle of the street, Finan has a quiet word with Guillaume.

"Unless I am very much mistaken, the items appear to be of Fomorian origin.  An ancient civilisation of Giants revered as Demi Gods
by the Gliss.  They enslaved all before them in an iron grip but disappeared suddenly and without reason millennia ago.

The plaque is probably the most significant artefact though.  It is a map of an ancient labyrinth.  A labyrinth within the Lost City of Nem,
the city of the Fomorians far to the North.  This knowledge is fairly common among the Druids with many legends and stories attached to it.

I'm sure Kores with have kittens when hr sees it..."

The three of them traced the wide path about the citadel and down through the town towards the docks.

As they walked Finan noted an elderly druid, Kerron, walking back up towards the towards the Temple.

"I wonder if the Lord Steward is aware of this provenance."  Guillaume looks around to check they are not being overheard.  "I am glad then, that I created a copy of the plaque!"  He flourishes the cloth with the imprint of the plaque.  "So we 'ave a map of the labyrinth, now we need to find this lost city."

A faraway look comes over Guillaume.  "Think of the riches..."

"Death is all you will find there...  If the Steward knew or cared of the provenence I'm sure he wouldn't have been so helpful."

Guilaume shrugs.  "So it would be your advice to stay away from Nem?  I wonder if Kores will 'eed such advice.  There may be more artifacts there, per'aps some of value to the Druids?"

He continues walking towards the docks.

The three of them continued their descent until they were back outside the chapel amid the Docklands.

They saw Brother Jacob departing across the square with a bundle in his hand.

Brenar, Dann and Trivel headed away from the other three in a straight line towards North Gate ( See Map Thread).

There were a steady stream of people coming in the gate; mostly late traders and tired groups of field hands.

They came across a row of stores on their left; a coopers, a saddlery and the unsigned store known only as Lumpy's.

Not being able to read any signs, Trivel looks at the store. What does one sell in an unsigned store?
He's also keeping watch for the men they saw earlier.

Brenar indicated the store and led the other two down a small walkway beside it to a green painted door.

Shrugging he pushed it open....

The store was dark inside and stacked high with all manner of objects and furnishings.

A very ugly man with a prodigious gut struggled up from the stool he was sitting on, " Can I help you gents?"

Dann looks at Trivel and Brenar, uncertain on what to ask.

The man before them was not the Lumpy that Brenar knew back in the day but then there had been quite a number of men known as Lumpy running the place as despite the owner been stabbed to death on a regular basis the place did quite an exceptionally roaring trade.....one simply had to know when to get out...a lesson only a few Lumpys over the years had learned.

"Lumpy I presume." Brenar began. "We're looking for...information" He said giving a quick glance over his shoulder. "And word is you might be able to help."

" Aye, that I might. But it'll cost ya.", he snuffled. His eyes flicked over the three men, hanging a little longer on Trivel.

" Information about what?"

"It always does." Brenar agreed. He gave a look at his companion. "We were hire for a job, for a certain Silver Face. Sadly, our partner who knew where to go got caught and executed. Very messy affair. Our discreet inquires reveiled that you might be able to direct us the right way." He stated in a low tone, giving the occasional look over his shoulder.

" You were? Bad Luck about your mate but thats life, I guess.  Seems he has a few crews going...can't see there'd be much money in it myself."

" I don't know who he is and I'm pretty sure I don't want to. But one of the other crews he hired, couple of not so sharp local lads....they said they met with him just outside the castle walls underneath an old druid-arch...the ones with the carvings.  Not sure which one, mind...but there'd only be two or three round the walls that aren't bricked up these days."

" You'll need to put something red at the top of the arch and then come back the next night...or so they said.  Could've been pulling my leg."

" They off-loaded a bunch of old Selentine stuff to me, said Silver Face wasn't interested...only wanted older stuff.....".

"What kind of stuff?" asks Dann laconically.

" Eh? Oh, shield centres mostly..them scutum things...seems metal-head is only after old local gear...dunno why..."

"...old local gear..." repeats Dann, mumbling. This sounds really suspicious to the borderer.

"We have the information we were looking for." Brenar offered, "And we wouldn't want to keep you any longer that we needed. Shall we conclude this transaction and my friends and I will go and hand our red cloth." he added his hand on his purse.

" Aye, well...you do that then.  Nay charge this time, but likely lads like yourselves? You look like you might need some items disposed of on a semi-regular basis.  And i have the ways and means of doing that. Anything you need to shift at the moment or in the future, just come and see me."


A little later...

Brenar, Dann and trivel approached the ancient fortress walls avoiding the main gate...they had already seen one Druids-Arch but it was blocked with old stone and wasn't in the location they had been told of.

They found a couple more round towards the temple and were considering checking them again when Danns keen eyes spotted a length of red thread caught at the top of the arch they had just found*.


OOC: * On the Map it is just below the O in the word Fort.

"Your offer is most generous and will not be forgotten." Brenar replied with a slight bow. "Until we meet again then." He added, ready to head out.


Later...

Brenar was scanning as best he could hoping they would find something soon as the night was growing shorter with every passing moments.

OOC. As Dann is the one who saw it, I'll wait until he say something before reacting to the discovery.

"There is something there. It's red." says Dann, pointing at the arch.

" Yes. I see it now. Shall we hang our pennant then?"

"Or we could hide and watch abd follow whoever picks it up." Brenar offered. "Maybe not the best plan with our armour, but it's a plan."

"Doing that, we would be at a disadvantage. Let's move now: one down to watch around and fire at any hostile presence, and two to climb, one helping the other." proposes Dann.

In reply to Dann of Clan Valin (msg # 201):

" I will keep watch with my bow."

The steppesman moved over towards a hedgerow running along the wall and knelt in the shadows.

Dann proposes to Brenar to climb first.

Nodding Brenar looks around to find a good grip and to start climbing.

With a boost from Dann, Brenar easily scrabbled to the top of the arch.

Once He had completed his climb, Brenar expended his arm to help Dann up.

Dann joined Brenar within the upper part of the arch, the two mens feet resting on decorative stone wreathwork.

Dann looks around to determine where he could progress from where he is.

Trivel just keeps covering the two, trying to spot possible menaces before they could approach or shoot.

OOC: Theres not really any more arch to go. You can both reach the top from where you are.

Dann signals Brenar to go up first.

Carefully Brenar makes his way up Then will help Dann.

OOC: You've climbed up a blocked up archway in the defensive wall of the castle. Your now at the point you could place your pennant easily, or if you really wanted to keep climbing you could reach the top of the wall and then drop into the courtyard or make your way along the top of the wall.

The two men placed the red piece of cloth between the stones at the apex of the arch and descended back down to meet Trivel at the bottom.  The Steppesman reported that there had been no observers or anyone approaching.

"Sounds good." He replied. "Shall we hide and wait or join the others and come by tomorrow?"

"Let's wait a little. We have not learned much yet, have we?" suggests Dann.

Trivel nodds.
"If you're hunting the hunter, it's always best to see who would come to check the snares", he says.
"As long as you don't get noticed yourself. It might be his son coming, and then you got no advantage, but wasted the advantage of surprise."

The three men secreted themselves in the spot Trivel had found earlier and waited a number of hours, but they saw no one approach or take note of the token they had left within that time.

It was now deep in the night and the moon hung low overhead, casting the streets into stark repose with its blue light.....

"Hunter's moon", Trivel whispered. The pale blue light was friendly to sneaking, it was said in the Khaganate - for fully practical reasons.
"But the prey ain't coming", he added, and preyed to his ancestors to bring someone, finally, that they could question. Sometimes, the ancestors even listened!
Though he had a feeling it wouldn't be this time.

"Right you are. Let's wait a little more then try to join the others." proposes Dann.

In reply to Dann of Clan Valin (msg # 222):

"Works for me".

The three men waited another hour and though they saw people pass, none seemed to take overly much interest in the scrap of cloth....it was likely, as Lumpy had said that the interested party would come the following evening. If any of the passersby were actively looking for anything but the way home the sharp eyes of the three men could not pick them out.

Shrugging they decided to head to the Hens Roost.

Trivel, Dann and Brenar found the small alehouse easily enough, as they entered they saw Rabbie and Colm within and Kores sitting off to the side.

Rabbie was excitedly showing Kores a fistful of bronze tarnished coins, mixed with small silver buttons....Kores seemed to have other things on his mind and Colm looked troubled.

"Any luck?" Brenar asked them once he was seated signaling for a drink.

"...Much more than usual.  It is fortunate that those from other planes of existence have no love of gold...  However I wasn't expecting to find what I found."

Kores picks up a bronze coin.  With an expression of distaste he looks at it and flicks one of them off the table.

"If I told you that there were lost civilizations, great ancient beings that may have survived the ages and knowledge envied by Gods and greater supernatural entities somehow I don't think that would interest you."

"Now...  If I told you that there were dead kings who no longer need their wealth, and abundance of gold and gems that the dead no longer have a use for, enough to wine and dine and fornicate with for the rest of your miserable life, would that be of interest?  No?  Then ancient artifacts, well beyond the grasp of petty grave robbers.  Crowns of lost kings, symbols of power that men, gods and demons will respect...."

Trivel simply nodded. He was reasoning that if the guys who went to place the red cloth didn't want to meet whoever would see it, they probably had their reasons to change their minds.
Besides, he was almost used to not staying in one place for long.
