Historical interval 2035-2039

Historical interval 2035-2039

We have now arrived at the turn 2035-39.

After a long year, here we are, mainly thanks to Kelvins efforts as Combat cycle Referee. Thankyou Kelvin!

Now we look ahead.

1) Check your country/countries. Make sure everything is in order. Especially where your troops are. Update your country pages. If you have any questions let me know.

2) Update yourself on the news section so you know what is going on and that you allocate PAs etc to what needs taken care of.

3) Update yourself on the ruleschanges.

4) Please contribute to NPC actions, stories, news etc. I especially encourage you to send me tips for newsarticles ASAP. More creative minds make more fun then fewer...

5) Schedule for 2035 turn. Will anyone believe this?
October 26, 2015: START 2035-39 TURN. Me & Kelvin set about editing new budgets for old and new PCs
November: Player receive budgets
December: Player send in budget and actions
January, 2016: Last news article up by GM
February, 2016: Player deadline for response
March, 2016: Last followup by GM
April, 2017: END TURN

6) If you see a mistake or can make an improvement or just add to the fun please don´t hesitate to shout out.

7) I am sure I am forgetting something but now we are on our way!

In reply to Referee (msg # 1):

GM said it was OK to post news article - Andreas, if I got anything wrong please feel free to correct

News Article - 'Cracks in the Crystal Palace'

Tensions amongst Crystal Palace members have spilled over and are currently threatening to tear apart the international coalition which currently operates the worlds largest space program.

Inside sources have said that arguments began when Russian and German officials questioned each others use of station facilities. Russian representatives have objected to German space ships using the terminals to resupply without recompense to Russia for resources being used for this purpose which Russia believes it owns.

In response Germany and the UK have both retorted that unscheduled launches to install Russian orbital facilities including an outpost module have disrupted work and highlight what one leaked UK report calls 'a complete inability to co-operate with other members as equals or communicate their intentions without insulting or condescending'

The Liberty Terminal partners have also become involved - offering to either mediate or provide assistance to Germany in the maintenance of its ships when the Liberty Terminal is brought fully online.

Unnamed Russian sources have claimed the offer from the Liberty partners is a ploy to ensure the current dispute continues to stymie the Russian space program as it has been stated that if a compromise cannot be found the two stations will be off-lined until an agreement can be reached.

Mid Turn: A first taste

Sorry about the delay, I have come to the conclusion that we really have no choice but to incorporate the Heaven&Earth software, it has an elegant, if ancient, simplicity which we need to handle so much data, but that also meant a huge number of adjustments to the rules. Anyways, I have been pushing hard on creating a draft, which is now in Andrea's hands for his review before I make it available for everyone else to see.

The Management will now be processing your Turn orders, this may take a while, so in the mean time below is a taste to get you started. Please continue on all the things which I had earlier asked you to hold. I will continue to post new articles as events warrant.

The Shah returns! Teheran, Iran: Reza Pahlavi, the son of the last Shah of Iran has spent his life in exile in Paris uniting the Iranian dissident ex-patriates. Now in 2036 he returns in triumph to Iran some nearly 60 years after his father was deposed. With the backing of Iran national council (INC) and the National Council of Resistance of Iran (NCRI), he has been welcomed by Nationalists and moderates alike as some remember the time of the Shah as economically prosperous. Mr Pahlavi was being coy about reclaiming the throne as king, saying: “That is not what matters now. Foremost we must replace the Islamic republic with a strong nation and a strong leader against the forces that seek to destroy Persian greatness.”

Russia and China Sign 25year+ Oil Deal: Beijing and Moscow: China signs new gas and oil deal with Russia. Over the course of the next 30 years the amount of oil from Russia into China will quadruple its current amount to slake China’s desperate need. This makes the previous deal struck between China and Russia back in 2015 look like just a testing of the waters.  Russian border towns have become near-lawless boom towns as Russian oil and natural gas flow out while Chinese cash and Chinese refugees flow in.

Translated excerpt of post by South Korean user BoxeR: i-band streaming site ‘Twitch’: Duuude, got Quested to break into a Doosansucky mainframe last night, it was managing some hush-hush prototype thing called ‘Project Aequorea’ Totally pwned their security!!!! Level 2 turned out to be taking over automated construction boats and maneuvering them to block security from shooting at more North Korean navy ships filled with refs trying to defect. Pwnd that level too! ****1/2 out of 5. Give me all your Vespene you Zerglings, BoxeR rules!

German Minister Criticizes Anti-Interventionists: Berlin, Germany: “These dummkofs drive over here in their petrol fueled cars, bellies full of warm food, to protest that we don’t deserve the oil that our boys died to defend. German units will continue taking up positions in the Kurdistan/IC oil fields, securing them against bandits, I do not care that anyone tries to portray this as some sort of theft”. Some of the demonstration ended in violence, German Feldjäger (Military Police) units have joined the German Police to maintain order. German Internal Affairs Minister has stated that this situation may last, depending on how long takes the situation to calm down.

The People's Most Glorious Republic of Best Korea

In reply to Combat Cycle Ref (msg # 9):

For nearly a century, the Glorious People's Republic of Korea has led the world in wealth, technological prowess, honor, food production, peace, war, electricity, harmony, and freedom.  Our lead in all these areas continues to expand unabated, leading to our ascension to a nigh-invulnerable higher plane of existence.  All of this would be impossible without the grand and glorious leadership of Kim Jong Un, Guardian of Korea, Defender of the People, Supreme Ruler of all that is Good on Earth, Soverign of all that the Light Touches.

Other, lesser, nations continue to be jealous of our radical success in all fields.  Our glorious national policy of *juche* cannot be defeated!  Except by the nefarious influence of hostile foreign capitalist pig-dogs!  The evil influence of this international gang of petty thugs and childish imperialists corrupts the whole world.  The loathsome fear of the dirty and depraved capitalists leads them to sabotage our factories and farms.  But we have the last laugh!  We are too strong to be hurt by their sinister sabotage!  Nothing can hurt Best Korea as long as we are protected under the gentle hand of Kim! Jong! Un!

However!  The patience of our infinitely patient Leader grows thin.  The unconscionable evils perpetrated against the loyal people of Korea by sinister Western overlords must cease!  These Western devils will pay reparations for their heinous acts, in the amount of US$750 billion, or they shall face the unstoppable might of Korea!

Our nuclear arsenal is unstoppable.  We have three nuclear bombs for every person on earth.  Each tiny, dirty shack the evil Americans are forced to live in by their even more evil government is targeted by two dozen high-yield hydrogen bombs.  We have asteroids aimed at every imperialist-capitalist military base on earth.

If we are not paid US$750 billion the world will receive a swift and judicious punishment, as from God Himself (who is just an invention of capitalist pig-dogs), meted out by the fair and handsome Kim Jong Un.  We, the ever faithful people of the People's Republic of Korea, will be saved in the anti-matter powered starship which Kim Jong Un designed and built himself.

All glory to Kim Jong Un!  All glory to Korea!  All glory to juche!

The People's Most Glorious Republic of Best Korea

In reply to North Korea (msg # 10):

From Japan to North Korea:
Dear North Korea, Japan is willing to assist you in the transistion to a modern society. If you show a bit more restraint, Japan will continue the succesful oilcooperation and joint workprogram and will send SUs and money. The current path is however not the way.

Due to this blatant threat of nuclear assault all North Korea vehicles and persons are barred from entering Japan and Japanese waters in order to diminish the risk of a nuclear attack. Persons or vehicles trying to enter will be warned, searched, detained or ultimately stopped with lethal force. Japan is deploying military and civilian resources to this operation, most notably our 3 ABMs. EDIT: Most notably absent will the Japanese Helicopter carrier groups be, because due to budget constraints they have not been equipped with new helicopters and will not be so equipped for another 5-10 years...

Sunshine blotted out by a storm

In reply to North Korea (msg # 10):

South Korea has raised its military alert levels and is putting plans in place to evacuate Seoul.

South Korea calls upon its PROTO allies to also step up military alertness, and to condemn the North Korean threats and clearly restate their commitment to the mutual defense of Members.

South Korea closes its borders and the shared industrial Zone is again on hold.

South Korea also offers to co-ordinate any defensive actions with Japan and to work together with Japan to contain any conventional threat from North Korea (if Japan wants to discuss this further I would suggest a private conversation)

Excerpt from IC School Textbook Seized At Tewksberry Private Middle School.
There are 4 IEDs on a table, and each IED is a different color (red, green, blue, and yellow). Two IEDs are selected at random from the table for use in an operation
a) Is the order of the IEDs, or the order of their colors, important in how many Crusaders they kill?
b) Use a tree diagram to find the number of unique color combinations for the two IEDs.
c) Use combination notation to find the number of unique color combinations.

Yeon Deung Ho Festival of Gangdong-Gu: The Lotus Lantern Festival is an annual celebration of Buddha’s birth. Preceding the festival, over 100,000 brightly colored lanterns are hung about the streets of Gangdong-Gu symbolizing offerings of light and compassion. After the lighting of the giant Jangeumdang, the lantern representative of Buddha, the festivities begin with activities such as teaching visitors to make their own rosaries or lanterns, or dances by host monks in bright robes. The festivities culminate in the Daedong Celebration, a night of singing and dancing amidst a shower of pink lotus petals. -From link node of Yeon Deung Ho festival, which had been canceled this year amid war fears and the festival grounds used as an evacuation centre for civilians from Seoul. Re: War Round#1

Again, for my better understanding of the rules (maybe I'm a Little dumb), a question:

Combat Cycle Ref:
Pink Elephant Delta Decrypt:..Release Full spre<unrecoverable>ary Targets repeat Military Targets only ...WMD release author<unrecoverable> ..
-Chinese Central Command directive #1A29F999

(...)

Mil Rank 2 Mil tech 7.4, Sum Basic Strength: 462, Final Combat Strength: 25299

Odds are 474/25299=0.02 which becomes <1:10 odds, shifted { 2 to Right for WMD usage by attacker, 1 to Right for units are in the middle of combat and out in the open } final odds 1:4

19:04, Today: Combat Cycle Ref rolled 1 using 1d10. Pink Elephant Delta Decrypt. -Fumble on Hazardous action
19:58, Today: Combat Cycle Ref rolled 13 using 3d6.  Pink Elephant Delta Decrypt.#2. -Major Mishap
19:56, Today: Combat Cycle Ref rolled 7 using 1d10.  Pink Elephant Delta Decrypt.#2. -Attack roll
23:28, Today: Combat Cycle Ref rolled 2 using 1d10.  Pink Elephant Delta Decrypt.#ABM intercept.

Results: 100% permanent to loss Attacker, 20%/5=4% permanent loss to defender,
Loss to Attacker is ignored. Loss to Defender is reduced by (10x7.4x7.4x0.2)/474=23% due to action of ABM

0.04 X 462 available hits x (1-0.23 ABM) = 14 hits

Dice rolls:

I guess the third one (the one at 19:56, a 7 on 1d10) is the combat roll, as the result (100/20) matches to it. So, what do the first two rolls (the 1 on 1d10 rolled at 19:04 and the 13 on 3d6 rolled at 19:58) mean?

I guess the second one is for thefumble result (something I don't find in the rules, but that I understand, and whose reult I guess we will see in as the turn procedes), but what does the first one mean, not being a combat roll?

In reply to Combat Cycle Ref (msg # 15):

Quick check on some Info (if you can tell us or if it needs to be info available only for individual countries can you PM it?)

  • Which country targeted where with Nukes (were the WMD use only against military targets or civilian targets? What civilian casualties are we looking at/cities being targeted)
  • Did Chinese Nukes hit any targets within S Korea
  • Who or what is Pink Elephant? Or is the event called that not the group decrypting?

5 Experienced IRBM Squadrons

Mil Rank 2, Mil tech 7.8, Sum Basic Strength: 48, WMDs used so attack strength becomes 84, Final Combat Strength: 474

One more question:

If the sum of base stregth is 84, and TL is 7.8, Final combat strength whould'n be 5110.56 (84*7.82)? Or there are some other modifiers?

See that, if so, numbers would be:

Odds are 5110/25229=.2025, which becomes 1:5 odds, shifted { 2 to Right for WMD usage by attacker, 1 to Right for units are in the middle of combat and out in the open } final odds 1:2.

With a result of 7 on 1d10, result would be 60/5_12% losses on attacker and 20/5=4% loses on defender. As attacker losses are ignored, the result (IMHO luckly) remains exaclty the same.

A task roll, about what is something you do not get to know.

Even more (again for better understanding of the rules), after Reading it more throughly (see that there's no effect on final result):

As I understand them (12.6, 12.9 (as we're using 12.10, 12.9 does not apply) from v20151225 Official), the ABM/SAM intercept should be:
quote:
Air Defebses;
1 ABM (japanese): 10 x 1.5 (enenmy has IRBMs)=15
32 SAM (2 ROK, 32, NK): each 2 x .25 (SAM vs IRBM/ICBM)=64

Sum of basic combat strength: 79, Final Combat strength:1698 4326

1698 4326 * 20% (roll)= 340 865 hits intercepted:

So, total combat power by China would be 5110-340 865= 4770 4245

Combat would be 4770 4245/25229=0.189 0.168, which becomes 1:6 odds, shifted { 2 to Right for WMD usage by attacker, 1 to Right for units are in the middle of combat and out in the open } final odds 1:2.

With a result of 7 on 1d10, result would be 60/5_12% losses on attacker and 20/5=4% loses on defender. As attacker losses are ignored, the result (IMHO luckly) remains exaclty the same.

EDIT NOTE: I changed the numbers due to applying 12.9 when we're using 12.10. No significant changes occur END EDIT

Is that right?

Notice about War Round#2

Everyone has got until 1800 UTC of Oct 3, 2016 to get their orders in to me regarding War Round#2. Your orders must be in the appropriate Followup thread on this forum. If you do not order it, then it does not happen, it is not my job to read your mind.

From the beginning of this this game there has been repeated confusion over which units have gone where and gotten destroyed. Frankly it has been a nightmare trying to run things because I am never sure. Obviously, with the Quick Combat rules that I expect to continue to be using, movement is a hazy thing, and I am fine with that, but it is completely out of control when I am not sure which continent a unit is on. From now on I expect each unit be identified by a unique number and be located in a specific hex, listing it's hex location as 'secret' or 'classified is not acceptable, or it is not going to fight.

I intend for this War Round to cover a relatively short period of time. If your orders are to move units long distances then, depending upon their capabilities and travel arrangements, they might not arrive until some time later.

Notice about War Round#2

An unfortunate consequence of having to make a wild guess years ago about how much SU nations should start out with in reserve, is that it has caused no end of game balance issues since then.

For purposes of supply only, the actions around the Korean Peninsula during WR#1 will be combined with WR#2. The break between WR for actions around the Korean Peninsula was necessitated by all the political maneuvering that had to occur, but both WR actually cover an extremely short period of time, too short to consume all those supplies. To insist on the rules as is, as Lluis points out, would bankrupt any nation.

If I could do it all over again I would have had the Korean land battles of WR#1 actually occur in WR#2. Too late to fix that now.

In reply to Combat Cycle Ref (msg # 23):

If you allow me a suggestion, and assuming all this is occurring in a short span of time (as you say), and so go faster tan other wars, I'd suggest not to advance in other wars (mostly Middle East, at least for now) in WR2, even if that means there wil lbe a WR5 to resolve what would be their WR4.

Said otherwise (and hoping to clarify and not mess it even more), call it WR 1.5, affecting only Korean Penninsula (and any derivate it might have).

War Round#3

Out! Ankara, Turkey: The shuttle diplomacy drive by the British Foreign minister has broken down in his attempt to have an agreement from both Turkish and Kurdish governments to a peace conference to try to settle disputes over the borders between the two nations. In particular, Turkey gave Sir Wallace 1 hour to leave the country under notice that his plane would be shot from the sky if he ever tried to return.

War Round#4

Excerpt from IC School Textbook #4.
Oil Futures Tumbled to Multi-Week Lows on Friday: New York, USA:  OPEC reported that its crude production rose to its highest level on record and pointed to a surplus expected next year helped by the winding down of the conflict with the Islamic Caliphate and hopes of normalizing trade relations with Iran. On the ICE Futures Exchange in London, Brent oil for January delivery fell to a session low of $174.19 a barrel, a level not seen since August 11. It was last at $174.75 by close of trade Friday, settling down $4.26, or 2.38%.

With demand for OPEC crude in 2040 expected to average 47.69 million bpd, the report indicates there will now be an average surplus of 1,400,000 bpd if OPEC keeps output steady. Crown Prince Osama Hawsawi’s report was confident at least that the unexplained loss at sea of the supertankers Star of Arabia and the Aladdin would not contribute to significant delivery problems in getting this surplus to customers.

The bearish report from Prince Hawsawi came one day after the International Atomic Energy Agency warned that the catastrophic meltdown of the Japanese Sendai Nuclear Power Plant was likely was caused by eco-cyberterroists. The IAEA is taking a stand of discounting the eyewitness statements of an attack by alien monsters on the reactor as being ongoing panic from the American UFO scare, and the IAEA warned of the risks another incident happening if the till-now growing Japanese nuclear sector is not checked.

Bloody Damascus#4:
“My mind is going. I can feel it”: Ankara, Turkey: A glitch in the Turkish president’s autotranslate device made for some humorous moments in what was supposed to be the president’s trumpeting of Turkish special forces recent assassination of hardline Kurdish leader Mustafa Khidr Juma. Reporters of of several Eastern based news nodes, including the usually non-committal Korean daily, Chosun Illbo, insisted on seeing the glitches as a plea for help from the Apps beyond. This turned the rest of the news conference into a discussion what the Turkish government was going to do to ‘...stop the abomination of data corruption’ which has struck several key data centres around the world recently. Visibly upset at the change of subject, President Reçber said that listening to the Engrams had allowed him to decrypt the IP addresses of the Kremlin’s favorite and disrupt the Kurdish referendum, he was confident the Engrams would also find a way to program around the bad disk sectors coming from the West.

First warning for End of 2035 Turn

Rerlations between the colatition and the Calipahte are at 0, so I expected 4 rounds to be fought, but there have been only 3 (as WR2 only affected Korean conflict). Won't it be a 4th one?

Bloody Damascus#4:
Project Stahlhammer Update: Bonn, Germany: The paper aims to analyze the tests conducted, highlighting the impact of radioactive pollution on the atmospheric, aquatic, and underground environments. Special attention was given to the concentration of main radioactive isotopes which were released, such as 14C, 137Cs, and 90Sr, generally stored in the atmosphere and marine environment. In addition, an attempt was made to trace the spatial delimitation of the most heavily contaminated sites, and to note the human exposure which has caused a statistically significantly increase incidence of thyroidal cancer locally and regionally. Germany is one of the important examples of assessing the correlation between the increase in the thyroid cancer incidence rate and the continental-scale radioactive contamination with 131I, a radioactive isotope which was released during the weapon tests carried out in the Truppenübungsplatz Heuberg site. -Abstract of German Ministry of Defense paper

Yemeni Intervention#1
Logs of Nearby Sonar Detectors: Copenhagen, Denmark: Analysis: note presence of powerful bursts at the same time and location of the lost ships, this is somewhat correlated with the survivor testimony.  Examination of the tanker wreckages by AUV show ramming by large object or fuel-air concussive blast or similar unknown sonic weapon. Conclusion: Unknown state-level actor responsible, resolution of which would force elimination of emergency shipping rates resulting in a 14% Q4 drop in profitability and cancellation of insurance coverage. Recommendation: Expand upon project Star Hammer to include Efes conglomerate’s proposal of mimetic action blaming losses on renegade North Korean submarines. Explain any irregularities on the recent crash of the Nice data centre. -Internal memo compiled for Maersk Risk Management Division

News Article Question

In reply to Combat Cycle Ref (msg # 36):

"Project Stahlhammer" - the heck is this? - guessing since there is (what I assume from the news)a leak I'd guess most Intel. services have an idea on what this is? If so then management please note there are calls to the CIA coming in from the whitehouse asking what we know about this.

Does Germany acknowledge these reports - do they have any comment?

Germany can also assume that the US Ambassador will be asking questions about this report - mainly because of the mention of various radioactive isotopes.

We trust that Germany is continuing to follow its responsibilities and duties under the non proliferation treaty

Any page in particular? There are many updates that I need to do before the start of the next Turn, however I will be travelling and will be largely unavailable until late next week. We will resume things then.
