Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

September 13th, 1880. Evening. Outside Bullock & Star's Outfitters, Deadwood, Sioux nations

By the time Bullock, Han Lee, James Wilder, Jimmy Lonefeather, and Jack McCall make it to "Bullock & Star's Outfitters," the place is a burning wreck. There's chaos all around, and there's a tiny bit of a fire brigade, which makes finding out what actually happened here difficult at best. McCall's limping is noticeable, and it's slowing everyone down...even the man in the space suit moves faster than he does.

((OOC: So...you're here. What now?))

Bullock looks at the heap of fire that used to be his livelihood.
"Sol!? SOL STARR?" he starts yelling, walking closer to the blaze.
He grabs the arm of a man running by him to fetch more water and asks: "Have you seen Sol Starr? He was minding the store."

"I ain't seen anyone, Mr. Bullock sir." The man says. "I just got here." he tosses his bucket on the blaze. He turns and shouts "HEY! Anyone here see what happened to the fella minding the store?"

There's a chorus of "no" and "not sure," until one man pipes up: "The Jew? I think the robbers got 'em! I was buyin' some gear when they stormed in...all dressed in robes and painted purple. Funniest damn robbers you ever did see. I lit on out the back when they came in, so I didn't see what happened, but I think there was gunfire, and then the fire broke out."

"Before we start rustling up horses for bandits, perhaps we should take a look inside first." Jimmy says. "The guy said the robbers came in, there was some shooting, and then the fire started. Maybe your friend managed to get the drop on them. Or maybe they just killed him and went on their way. We don't know." He pats Wilder's fire suit. "But we have someone here who can find out. Maybe we can find a trail--and won't need that bastard's help at all."

"Now wait just a fucking minute!" McCall protests. "I already know where we're going!"

"Yeah? And what guarantee do we have you won't just ride out and leave us twisting in the wind?" Jimmy asks, his hand sliding nonchalantly to the holster of the gatling pistol at his side.

"Well, what fucking guarantee do I have you won't try to plug me in the back when I ride away, huh? Tell me that!"

"When you go in, the store's separated by a few shelves to your right. They're high enough to form make-shift corridors, but most likely have collapsed in the blaze already.
To the left, there's the counter with the register. In the back, somewhat to the right, is the office. We've reinforced the walls with some metal bars because of the safe we got back there. Behind the office is a small washroom. If Sol's still alive, he's bound to be in there."

He grimaces. "There's another door in the back. I'll circle round and meet you there. When you come out of the office, go left, until you hit the wall. There's the door."

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

The interior of the building is smokey and while the flames make everything bright, it's still hard to see much. Still, the suit works as advertised, and James doesn't feel more than mildly warm while inside it, and the smoke doesn't bother his lungs in the least.

There's definitely been a fight here, though. There's a streak of blood on the floor, as if something bleeding had been dragged. The drag marks lead away from the office and out the back door. Looking in to the office, it's apparent that this was where the majority of the fighting took place. Files and folders are scattered all over, and there's a pool of blood on the floor next to the safe, which is still closed.

There's no other sign of habitation. If Sol Star was here, he's not here now. It looks like he may have been injured and dragged away, if he wasn't killed by whatever left that pool of blood on the floor.

The wound in Jack McCall's leg mends at Han's touch, though his power can't do anything about the other wounds McCall has already sustained.

"I'm with you, Marshal." Lonefeather says.

"Where's my horse?" McCall grumbles, not bothering to thank the boy. "Get me that, I tell you where they are, and get out of your life forever."

((OOC: That would heal 3 wounds, actually...even at -3, that's still a 12, which is a success and 2 raises. However, McCall only has 1 wound that can be healed without Greater Healing, so he's as healed as he's going to get.))

"Fine." McCall grumbles. "I ain't fightin' on your behalf, though. once I've taken you there, we part ways."

He leads them up the tangled, chaotic streets, past soldiers attempting to contain and focus panicked crowds of people and moving horses, past the shells of business where looters work at stripping out the valuables, towards a great fire.

Several blocks of Deadwood are ablaze now...it looks like the Gem and all the nearby saloons caught fire not long after the Marshal's office went up. McCall leads them to a small hardware store next to the Langrishe theater.

As the group passes the theater, a familiar voice calls out. "Marshal! Marshal Bullock!" A woman with short blonde hair, burgundy dress, and makeup approaches the group out of the alley way, followed by a posh gentleman in a collared shirt, trousers, a fitted waistcoat and a cravat.

"Damn I'm glad I found you!" She says.

"I ain't his fuckin' friend." McCall grumbles. "Ain't yours, neither." He shifts the rifle in his hands, though he doesn't do anything quite as stupid as brandish it.

"Ma'am, we're on the trail of some dangerous criminals who've struck both the jail and Mr. Bullock's business partner." Says a disheveled half-breed who has a gatling pistol at the ready. There's an ugly scar around his neck that looks like it might have been caused by a noose... "You might want to find a safe place to wait out the trouble."

He obviously didn't seem to know her very well.

Jackie did recognize the man in the strange suit that was bringing up the rear...that was the guy who'd been called up to the stage just before the trouble started, and who had been dressed in that get-up by Hyrum Burns and his "daughter." But The Professor had said Burns was actually a criminal scientist named Reginald Smythee...so who knew what he was really up to...

Was the Marshal in danger, surrounded by these hardcases?

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

When the Marshal says purple skin and robes, she looks quite surprised at first and almost forms the first word to a question.  "Doomsay-?"

She stops herself.  They may very well have purple skin in some cases but he did not say purple robes.  She lets it go for now, though it looks strange.  She's known to be a few cartridges shy of a box.

Wells gives McCall a look that could chill sarsaparilla, her solid jaw set forward as if she were contemplating putting him out of her misery right here.  It's clear she does not like this news in the slightest.

"Well I don't know what possessed you to make that promise Marshal, but I suppose you can promise to let him go."

Her current costume notwithstanding, the stern woman looks at the man who was the victim of a particularly cruel necktie like he just ate a bug.  She seems mostly confused by the other would be accomplice.

From somewhere in that ensemble however a locally well known Gatling pistol emerges.

"The safest place is going to be the hell away from those purple skinned weirdoes, and the opposite of where I aim to go.  I got the rest rolled up and stashed nearby, it's on the way.  Let's go Marshal."

Her eyes dart between the three, the strange man who'd been on stage, the strange man who looked like he'd gotten taller and now found it hard to swallow, and the one who ought to be in jail.

"You keep your deputies back as well, Bullock." McCall says, "Or I reckon I won't be responsible if'n we don't get there in time to save yer friend."

"Why do we still need him anyway?" Lonefeather replies. "I'm a fair tracker myself. Comes with the job."

"Same thing. You might find where they stashed him, but can you do it in time before they do whatever it is they're planning?"

Lonefeather grins at him. "Yeah? You just threatened to lead us on a wild goose chase if we don't follow your whims. How do we know you aren't doing that already, as revenge? You've shot men for less."

"Only once," grumbles McCall.

"Only once? As if it makes that all better? You murdered a legend of the west in cold blood, McCall. Even if Bullock here keeps his deputy from chasing your ass to perdition, he doesn't have a hold on us. I'm prepared to chase your ass to Perdition if I need to."

He leads them back behind Ayers & Wardman Hardware, next to the theater. The group can hear the sounds of stomping from within.

"When I was here, there wasn't a whole congregation...just the leader." McCall says. "I'd been looking for...for a place to sleep. He called me a thief and threatened to toss me to his worms. I told him I wasn't no thief, and he said he'd spare me, but only if I did him a little favor first. There was some girl who'd done something to weaken his position among his cult. He wanted me to kill her. Gave me a robe to hide myself when I found her, so she wouldn't know me right off." He leads them back to a cellar door. "This leads to the store room. Go through here, and you can get right under 'em." McCall says, then glares at Bullock. "This is as far as I go. You're here. I done my bit."

The stomping gets louder. "Better hurry, Marshal. Sounds like they's gettin' ready to do somethin' nasty to your friend."

Unceremoniously, just as the Marshal concluded his orders, she turned the muzzle of the thing onto Jack McCall.  A loud static crackle hissed through the air.

4 charges, plus 1d6 for the raise, +4 for The Drop.  Hopefully I read the instructions right.

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

The cellar door is locked, naturally, but Lonefeather waves Bullock away. "I got this." he says, kneeling and pulling a small pouch of long, thin tools from his jacket. He works the tools into the padlock. "There's a reason they call me Jimmy."

After a few deft movements with the tools, there's a click and the lock falls away.

It's quiet above. Too quiet. "As much as I admire your style, lady," Lonefeather says to Jackie, "I think you made our job harder. I think we're about to be ambushed."

"Buenos noches, Marshal." A pleasant, if creepy, voice calls from the darkness. There's a muffled quality about it, as if the speaker were behind a barrier of some sort, and there's no real way to determine the direction it's coming from. "Seth!" someone shouts. "Get out of here! These people are crazy! Run! RU~!" The shout is abruptly silenced.

The cellar is dark. The only light comes from cracks in the floorboards, and the faint glimmer of illumination from the open door behind them. Unable to see, the posse of five stumble about, keeping to the walls. Mud squelches beneath their shoes. Occasionally one of them trips over a stick--presumably a stick, anyhow. Jackie kicks something round while moving through the muck that rolls with an eerily hollow sound. The basement stinks of rot, death, and that strange spoiled pear smell.

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

((OOC: Han, when you make a Fear check in Deadlands you subtract the Fear level as a penalty to your roll, and then add your grit as a bonus. As a Seasoned-rank character, you have 2 grit, and you have the Joker bonus, but the Fear Level here is 5, so you have a net -1 penalty that you didn't account for.

That means that unless you spend a red or blue chip for a bonus, you failed the fear check. This might change the rest of your action (having to deal with being Shaken at the very least).

You only get a single d6 when you get a raise on an attack roll, no matter how many raises you get. I'm going to need you to reroll that damage with the correct value, please.

Han Lee's quick reflexes splatter the worm that burst out of the wall in front of him, as well as giving him the momentum to take the thing that had burst out of the wall behind him.

The shotgun blast rips through the worm burrowing out of McCall's body, splattering Jackie with nasty ichor that smells horribly like rotten fruit. She hadn't even had time to blink yet.

((OOC: Yeah, it can get kinda fuzzy.

9 is enough to cause a wound, and the rattler bursting out of the other wall will be caught by your first strike attack. Since you get the Joker bonus until the end of your action, you get the bonus damage with that attack. Which means it also takes a wound. The one hit by the shotgun blast takes 2 wounds. All three go down (I'm saving my chips for the actual cultists). Nice job.

"But see, amid the mimic rout, A crawling shape intrude!" The demented preacher begins to shriek over the stomping. "A blood-red thing that writhes from out the scenic solitude! IT WRITHES! IT WRIIIIITHES! With mortal pangs the mimes become its food, and seraphs sob at vermin fangs in human gore imbued!"

Worms boil out of the mud in the basement. Bullock, Wilder, and Lonefeather can't actually see any of them, it's so dark, but when the hellishly strong tentacles wrap around their legs, there's no mistaking where the things are.

Lonefeather can't answer Wilder's quip--he goes down screaming as the things yank and tear at him. one of the things gets his head partway down its gullet, nasty teeth from the serrated maw

James Wilder is also hard-pressed to escape the maws of the hideous monsters, which tug and yank his suit, ripping it to tear at the flesh beneath, the hideous strength of the things crushing and grinding his bones in their tentacles.

Seth Bullock also finds himself besieged by the worms, but he's been prepared for this, and though he'll probably have to change his longjohns later, right now the adrenaline keeps him moving out of the lashing tentacles of the things just long enough for him to catch his breath. Then a tentacle whips the side of his head, and he sees stars and hears a ringing in his ears.

Outside, Han Lee finds yet another worm bursting out of the packed earth, attempting to grasp him and pull him under. He's able to evade the thing with a dazzling desplay of martial dexterity, however.

Jackie Wells is not quite so lucky. More worms burst from McCall's body, and though she's faced Rattler Youn'uns before (and worse--wormlings) it's always bad when they get the drop. Tentacles whip around her, lashing her face, and one of the things gets a good grip on her arm, yanking it from the socket in a flash of blinding pain...

((OOC: Oh, there are plenty more worms where those came from, Bullock. There are three worms down out of 15 or so in the immediate area, which leaves a dozen left to attempt to snack on you.

I check to see whether the worms or Bullock go first. It's a Group roll for all of them.

21:10, Today: Rattler Young'un rolled 4,10 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,(6+4)10. Agility. That'll beat Bullcok's 5.

There are 3 rattlers after Bullock, 3 after James Wilder, 3 after Lonefeather, 2 after Jackie, and 1 after Han Lee.

The worms get bonuses for their Burrowing attack. They get no bonus against Bullock or Han Lee (they made their checks), +4 to attacks and Damage against the rest of you (since they not only beat your stealth checks, they got a raise to boot).

Attacks vs Bullock: +2 Gang-up, +1 special ability, no other bonus

Damage 1: 5 (no effect)
Damage 2: 8 (Shaken)

Attacks vs. Han Lee: +0 (his Martial Arts cancels out the special ability)

21:20, Today: Rattler Young'un rolled 2 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2. Fighting! Miss.

Attacks vs. Jackie: +1 Gang-up, +1 Special Ability, +4 The Drop

Damage 1: 14 (Shaken, 2 wounds)
Damage 2: 18 (Shaken, 3 wounds)

First attack - 2 wounds. Spend a white chip to soak
08:29, Today: James Wilder rolled 2,2 using 1d8,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,2. Soak Roll #1.
Fail ... white chip to re-roll
08:29, Today: James Wilder rolled 4,3 using 1d8,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,3. Soak Roll #1 x2.
That's 1 wound, I'll burn a red chip to a +d6
08:29, Today: James Wilder rolled 5 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5. Red Chip for Soak Roll #1 x2.
4+5 = 9 so that soaks both wounds - Down 2 whites and 1 red FC:W2R1B2

Second Attack - 3 wounds. Another white chip to soak
08:33, Today: James Wilder rolled 2,1 using 1d8,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,1. Soak Roll #2.
Utter fail AGAIN ... white chip to re-roll
08:33, Today: James Wilder rolled 5,5 using 1d8,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,5. Soak Roll #2 x2.
That's 1 wound, I'll burn a red chip to a +d6
08:34, Today: James Wilder rolled 3 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3. Red Chip for Soak Roll #2 x2.
That's 8 which covers 2 out of 3 ... going to burn a blue for another +d6
08:34, Today: James Wilder rolled 2 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2. Blue Chip for Soak Roll #2 x2.
And that's 10 ... won't do it. So that's 2 white, 1 red and 1 blue
FC:W0R0B1

I'm going to just go to the incap table from the 3rd attack and save my blue chip for there.
08:36, Today: James Wilder rolled 8,8 using 1d8-3,1d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of (8+3)11,(6+5)11. Vigor (-3 WP).
Woot! Raise: Roll on the Injury Table. The Injury goes away in 24 hours, or when all wounds are healed.
08:37, Today: James Wilder rolled 5 using 2d6 with rolls of 1,4. Injury Table.
Guts
08:38, Today: James Wilder rolled 3 using 1d6 with rolls of 3. Injury Tablex2.
3-4   Battered: Vigor reduced a die type(minimum d4).

... well that was fun X_x

There was a sick wet crunch*pop*.  In her shoulder.  Shoulders aren't supposed to do that.

Okay I spent a white to try to soak that madness.  I did pretty good with a 7 and I red chipped it for an 11.

Sorely tempted to reroll it to try to soak it all but I'll quit while I'm ahead with 2 wounds soaked.

17:16, Today: Jackie Wells rolled 4 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4. Red Chippers for more Soakies.

17:15, Today: Jackie Wells rolled 7,5 using 1d8,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 7,5. White, For Soakiness!

First, can we Unshake!?

23:59, Today: Jackie Wells rolled 6,3 using 1d8-1,1d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 7,4. Shake N Bake.

Indeed we can.

Okay I'm a bit rusty here, but I interpret the Advanced Gatling Gun as being activated with the Shooting Skill.  Jackie has -1 for wounds and -2 MAP, but hasn't moved and can use Rock and Roll!

We're going to spend 3 Power Points here.

00:07, Today: Jackie Wells rolled -1,-2,-2,-2 using 1d10-3,1d10-3,1d10-3,1d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of 2,1,1,1. hopefully correct roll to use.

o_o And that's terrible.  We're just going to white chipper that.

00:08, Today: Jackie Wells rolled 2,3,-1,-2 using 1d10-3,1d10-3,1d10-3,1d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of 5,6,2,1. let's try that again...

Good grief Charlie Brown!  Well at least no 1s on the Shooting dice, I seem to recall there's no special consequences for a 1 on the Wild Die.

Deputy Wells doesn't have a lot of options with the worm having her left arm.  Luckily her Gatling pistol was in her right hand before it even grabbed her.

As Jackie attempted to literally shoot the monster off of her, it pulled on the injured shoulder.

Bullock feels tentacles whipping all around him...more of the monsters have surrounded him, and he feels his strength starting to give out...

Jackie feels the monster twisting savagely on her wounded arm, trying to draw her back down through McCall's corpse...

And Han Lee even takes a swipe from the worm's tentacles, a slimy grip that yanks him off-balance and almost sends him tumbling...

((OOC: So, it's now the Rattler's turn. There are 10 Rattlers left.

Blue for +d6

White to soak the other 2
09:11, Today: James Wilder rolled 4,0 using 1D8-3,1d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of 7,3. Soak (-3 WP).
Not enough ... white chip to reroll
09:13, Today: James Wilder rolled 3,-1 using 1D8-3,1d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of 6,2. Soak (-3 WP) x2.

Last white chip to reroll
09:18, Today: James Wilder rolled 3,6 using 1D8-3,1d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of 6,(6+3)9. Vigor (-3 WP) white reroll.
Success ... I'll just reuse my injury table rolls from earlier
08:33, Today: James Wilder rolled 5 using 2d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,4. Injury Table.
08:33, Today: James Wilder rolled 1 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1. Injury Tablex2.
Broken: Agility reduced a die type(minimum d4)

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

Before Bullock can reply to the madman, the building is rocked by a small tremor. The ground rumbles and Bullock almost falls into the stinking muck. The boards of the hardware store above creak alarmingly, and Bullock thinks he sees, just for an instant, the outline of the trap door above him. It's 12 feet from the floor to the trap door. Perhaps if he can get to it, he could force it open...

Something else happens. The slithering worms crawling around Bullock, James, and Lonefeather suddenly twist away and burrow down into the muck, fleeing away wherever it is they go when underground. Outside, Han Lee and Jackie Wells also feel the shift. The worm nearest Han Lee flees back underground.

The worms inside Jack McCall's body are another story.

The dead bushwhacker's corpse twists and spasms and the worms try to crawl back through it away from the surface. Then the body twitches more, flailing about, bucking and twisting and seizing...and then Jack McCall's corpse sits up, the worms trapped in his gory chest cavity waving around like terrible new arms. The corpse's head turns to Jackie Wells. McCall's eyes shine in the moonlight. He opens his mouth...and begins to scream.

((OOC: And your prize for playing the OOTFP card is...a brand new Undead Jack McCall!

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

Sound logic, but I do have the "mundane" heal skill, it is just a d4, as opposed to the sexy sexy d8 of my magic healing.  And I think I am going to try and save James, mainly because Han thinks there are still threats down in the basement and unlike James, Jackie is still moving about for now. Apologies ahead of time, Jackie.

"Ms Wells, I must tend to James..." Han says back pedaling to the stair well. "Hold on, sir." the young doctor says as he gets to work awakening and mending the man.

He starts by hitting certain pressure points with the tips of his finger... it's not working. "Come on..." Least not fast enough. He pulls out  some herbs from a pouch and waives them under James' nose. "Come on-" then with a grunt of frustration Han's palm slaps James' across the cheek. "WAKE UP!" he calls and is satisfied with the response he finally gets.

Which looks about right given the MAP penalty so I will spend a red.  1 draw for you Stray.

21:27, Today: Doctor Han Lee rolled 5 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5. sigh... blue chip because ... sigh.

And now onto the magic healing:

And then spend another red to supplement...

Jackie wished desperately she had a better weapon in hand, but this would have to do.  The Deputy was cussing a blue streak through all this as the shiny gun barked its reports and the casings just piled up as the shots riddled the chest of what used to be one Jack McCall.

"Get Some Ya Plug Ugly Sunuvabitch!"

Yay, no 1s!  Decent roll!  Should be TWO short range hits?  Or do I have to roll against his Parry?  I'm not sure how assholes and elbows we really are, I'm taking for granted McCall is still a very short distance from Jackie Wells.

21:21, Today: Jackie Wells rolled 5,13 using 2d6,2d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,3,2,(6+5)11. Two damage rolls.

That's 5 and 13 in case that's any hits.

Jackie has the Rock and Roll edge, so that cancels out the autofire penalty. You do have to hit McCall's Parry, but since his Parry is 5, that doesn't change things. And if you added in the autofire penalty like I think you did, that means that 3 is actually a 5, which is also a hit.))

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

Finding Lonefeather in the gloom isn't hard. He's unconscious, and right where Wilder dropped him when the worms attacked.

From up above, Bullock can hear some whispers and footsteps. The shaking must have worried the madman upstairs. Bullock can hear something that sounds like a prayer, and then the stomping begins again. There seems to be fewer boots, though...and Bullock hears the creak of boards away from the stomping, presumably heading for the door outside...

Meanwhile, the screaming corpse recovers from Jackie's fusillade. McCall's hands scrabble along the ground, resting on the Spencer rifle the bandit had been carrying just before Jackie shot him the first time. The corpse raises the weapon, while the worms flail about. Jackie is able to fend off the worms with ease, but now the dead man is armed...

((OOC: Undead Jack McCall attempts to unshake.

01:33, Today: Jack McCall rolled 7,5 using d8+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 5,3. Recover from Shaken. That will do it, giving him an action at -2.

"Oh, mercy, it's got the babies!"

[Language unknown: "Dios'prelca korconhou!"]  her shorter companion says in what sounds like exhasperated Chinese, already bracing his rifle.

"Forget sneakin' - we have another problem right there!"
The first speaker says, breaking into a run. "Hold on, babies! Mama's comin'!"

At this, the remaining two figures take off. One stops across the alley from Jackie, considers taking a shot at the wurmnapping deadder then changes his mind and starts waving furiously. "Hey, Deputy Wells! Deputy Wells! Hey! Hiiii!"

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

Bullock's shot is true, striking Jack's lurching body through the breast. The matronly cultist is also a good shot, hitting McCall straight in the eyesocket.

But the screaming, flailing dead man only staggers a little at the shots. Flesh boils around the eyesocket, and within moments the eye is once more whole and undamaged.

The screaming dead man aims his purloined rifle at the shorter cultist, and squeezes off a shot. Death doesn't seem to have done anything to the dead man's aim, and the bullet finds it's mark.

The dead thing then lurches towards Jackie, the flailing worms in his chest wrapping themselves around her yet again.

((OOC: That means it's my turn, isn't it? Bullock's pistol Shakes McCall. The Cultist also Shakes McCall, but since McCall has the Hardy power, the extra Shaking doesn't do anything. And since he's not a zombie, he doesn't take any extra damage from the headshot.

23:25, Today: Jackie Wells rolled 1,5 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,5. Them's Fightin' Worms!

I'm going to interpret that as he fails.  Even with an Improvised Weapon penalty 4>3.

Deputy Wells, it turns out, was no paper tiger when things got down to the mud and the blood and the beer.  She adroitly blocked and turned on her heel to keep the monster back.  And when it leaned back just a bit, she took one step back.  But it was just to get into a classic isosceles stance.  Less recoil that way.

All right it's only 3 pp to do this, the real limiting fact is on rolling 1s.

I wound up having to chipper this due to a 1

23:37, Today: Jackie Wells rolled 3,4,0,7 using d10-1,d10-1,d10-1,d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 4,5,1,(6+2)8. pump him full of future lead!

One hit!

The abomination wasn't the only one confused by the sudden pile up on what used to be Jack McCall.  But Wells never was one to look a gift horse in the mouth.

Finding herself freed of the creature for a split second, she fell back.  Dropping the loud but mostly ineffectual Gatling pistol in the relatively crude (if artful) gun leather she'd procured for it in this time frame, she reckoned that if it dropped him where he stood once, the Raygun might well do it again.

Taking advantage to Withdraw.  I don't see anything in the rules that says you can't Withdraw and draw a weapon, but that might require an Agility roll at a -2 MAP if that would be awkward enough.  Your call Marshal.

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

Bullock's leap carries him up against the trap door, which bursts open. He's able to catch the lip of the door and haul himself halfway up.

The room looks like a stockroom, probably because that's what it is. There are boxes everywhere, most probably containing tools. Bullock can make out three standing figures in the lamplight, and one crouching figure. The crouching figure, sure enough, is Sol Star, who seems to be coughing. A burly cultist stands over him, foot raised for a kick to his midsection. Another cultist has her gun aimed at the trap door.

And the Reverend (there's no one else it could be) stands next to the trap door, smiling beatifically. He's a handsome, if creepy, latino male dressed like a baptist minister, though his skin is dyed purple and he clutches a copy of "The Raven and Other Poems by Edgar Allen Poe" instead of a bible.

"Ah. I wondered when you would try this." He says. "Did you think we would not be prepared? Kill him." this he says to someone just outside of Bullock's field of view...

Standing there, when any sane person would be running, she reached back into the shotgun thong and withdrew that weird looking scattergun of hers.

She had to make this shot count, this thing didn't have the power reserves to do this again.

Grappling requires both hands. A GM might allow a character to hold an item while grappling (at a situational penalty), but they could not use such an item (if it required a hand to use) while maintaining the grapple.

With Bullocks attention focused on his headshot, he fails to notice the reverend slip his hand into his frock and pull forth a wicked dagger. Doesn't notice, hat is, until he delivers his ultimatum and winds up with a face full of steel as the Reverend turns on him and slashes open his cheek.

The surprise blow sends Bullock staggering back, and the cultists rack new rounds into their rifles and continue blasting away at him while the Reverend gloats.

"The worms, they travel in packs, Marshal. Always in packs, until they grow. The loss of one worm is nothing. Let that comfort you as you die."

((OOC: The Good Reverend draws a ritual dagger and attempts to stab Bullock, because Bullock can't fire his gun and maintain his grapple.

Damage 1: 13, which is a Shaken and 1 wound for Bullock.

The cultists also get to take their shots. Now that Gusano is ungrappled, he doesn't provide cover. Only the 2 with rifles can fire (the guy with the shotgun takes his action to reload - it's a single chamber shotgun).

10:46, Today: Reverend Alonzo Gusano rolled 5,7 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,(6+1)7. Shooting! 2 hits

Damage 2: 9 (Shaken, unless Bullock fails to soak the first attack, in which case it's a wound)
Damage 3: 7 (Shaken, which causes a wound unless the Shaken from the previous attacks is dealt with)

The lesson here? When holding folks hostage, you need to actually keep your attention on the hostage.

Bullock, you're facing a potential 3 wounds here, but with a good use of chips you can come out of it only Shaken (or not wounded at all).

The best course would be to soak the wound from the first attack, take the Shaken from the second, then attempt to soak the wound fro the third attack, which would leave you completely healthy at the end of it.

White chip to soak that first wound! Good thing I still got the Joker...
21:32, Today: Seth Bullock rolled 13,5 using d8+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of (8+3)11,3. Vigor to soak.
Taking the second hit, then soak the third, spending a red chip for that.

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

The undead abomination staggers about. It raises the Spencer carbine in its hands and aims a return shot at Jackie.

The shot kicks like a mule, but Jackie feels a pulse of energy beneath her clothes as the alien technology she'd scavenged during her adventures in Devil's Tower absorbed the attack, spreading it across her torso. She might be bruised later, but she'd have no extra holes.

The flailing worms in McCall's chest took a swipe at Fawkes, but fail to get a hold.

((OOC: Jack McCall is currently Shaken with 2 wounds. He's undead, so the wounds just mark how far he is from being put down and don't affect his actions.

McCall gets to roll vigor to see if he heals. 15:28, Today: Jack McCall rolled 3,1 using d12,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,1. Regeneration. He does not.

McCall, now free of his grapple, attacks. He uses his tentacle to attack Fawkes, and takes a shot at Jackie. McCall has a -2 on the fighting roll because the tentacles count as off-hand, and a +2 on his Shooting attack because he's got Marksman.

15:32, Today: Jack McCall rolled 0,0 using d6-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 2,2. Fighting! Miss on the fighting roll.

15:34, Today: Jack McCall rolled 8,4 using d10+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 6,2. Shooting! (Marksman). hit and Raise

Damage: 7. That doesn't penetrate Jackie's armor because it's a relic armor from Devil's Tower, so she's fine.

"Very impressive." Gusano says as Bullock remains standing after that hail of gunfire. Blood drips from several of Bullock's wounds, but they're only flesh wounds...Bullock has been hurt worse than this. "But your strength cannot save you forever. Eventually, my fellows will score a deadly hit. You will fall, and the worms will feast. You cannot win this. The Princess of Worms has ordered your death, Marshal Bullock. It is a bold act, but you are her enemy. You and the Agency will fall this night. So i will strip you of your strength, and see how well you do then."

He raises his arms and begins chanting something. Bullock feels suddenly feverish and weak, as the black chanting of the reverend (it sounds like he's reciting a Latin prayer backwards) seeps into his flesh.

The cultists open fire yet again...

((OOC: The reverend and his men get to go before Bullock does. He dedices to mess with Bullock by casting Lower Trait on the marshal's Vigor.

Okay,... total 23. That oughta do it.

So that damage is one wound... the second a Shaken result.
Spend a white chip to soak.

08:56, Today: Seth Bullock rolled 7,2 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 7,2. Vigor.

I take the second and I'm shaken... Trying to unshake on my action.

Nope, so I'm spending a red chip to re-roll:
08:57, Today: Seth Bullock rolled 4,2 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,2. red chip.

And I'm fine.

Bullock stumbles and shakes his head, trying to clear it. Then his coat is peppered by the shotgun pellets and the pain brings him back.

He squeezes off a bullet at the Reverend.

"ENOUGH!"

Then he dives for the closest cover.

09:00, Today: Seth Bullock rolled 7 using 2d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of 1,5. Damage.
08:59, Today: Seth Bullock rolled 5,5 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,5. Shooting Gusano.

Bullets: 4/6.
09:01, Today: Seth Bullock drew the single card: KH using the Deadlands system. Initiative.

EDIT: Actually, since I didn't score a raise, I'm at -2 to the shooting. So I'm adding my last red chip to that roll... and of course it comes out at 1.

09:02, Today: Seth Bullock rolled 1 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1. Adding to the shooting roll.

Still, enough to hit, but not enough to make a difference. Red/blue-Chip-on-top-rolls usually hate me.

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

Seth catches the bundle of dynamite with one hand.
"There's civilians here, Deputy Wells!"

Then he turns back toward the crazy reverend who's still swinging the knife and fires another bullet at him.

"Three more, have rifles and a shotgun!"

13:02, Today: Seth Bullock rolled 15,4 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of (10+5)15,4. Shooting.
13:03, Today: Seth Bullock rolled 12 using 3d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of 5,5,1. damage.

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

"Ah, yes." The Reverend grins as the bullet wings him. He begins laughing. "KILL THE HOSTAGES! KILL EVERYONE!" He shouts, and the minions suddenly stop aiming their rifles at Bullock and start moving around the room! The reverend takes the opportunity to stab at Bullock again.

The roughneck with the shotgun yells inarticulately and charges at Jackie, slamming his shotgun into her has he attempts to drop her back down the hole.

Antoher aims a shot at Sol Star, who'd taken cover behind some crates. The businessman cringes as the shot tears a chunk out of the wood crate, but is otherwise unharmed. Sol grabs up the whip of the thug who'd tried to choke Bullock earlier.

The last cultist, babbling and gibbering, heads over behind some crates.

"NOOOOOO!" Comes a scream from behind the boxes. "NO! SETH, PLE~"

{{BANG!}}

The corner goes deadly silent.

((OOC: Looks like it's the Good Reverend's turn.

12 damage is 1 Wound, so the Reverend attempts to Soak.

23:08, Today: Reverend Alonzo Gusano rolled 4,1 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,1. Soak! That will do it.

Gusano order his minions about and attempts to disarm Bullock. That's a Called Shot to the arm (-2 penalty) that will force Bullock to make a Strength check vs. the damage rolled or drop his pistol.

23:10, Today: Reverend Alonzo Gusano rolled 15,-1 using d10-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of (10+7)17,1. Fighting! (Called Shot). That is a hit with a raise.

Damage: 13 (Shaken, 1 Wound, and Bullock needs to make a Strength check vs. 13 or lose his weapon)

The minions split up, going after various targets.

Shotgun Boy, since he'd need to reload this turn, instead focuses on trying to knock Jackie back down the pit. This is a Push.

23:20, Today: Worm Cultists rolled 2 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2. Strength!

Jackie, make an opposed Strength check vs. 2, and try not to crit. fail.

One of the thugs takes a potshot at Sol Star, who has been hiding under cover since the guy who was beating him died.

23:22, Today: Worm Cultists rolled 2 using 1d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 4. Shooting!  Miss.

One of them runs over to the area where they've been hiding Bullock's wife and begins shooting at her. This movement negates her cover, and since she's tied up, he gets The Drop.

23:23, Today: Worm Cultists rolled 12 using 1d6+4, rerolling max with rolls of (6+2)8. Shooting! (The Drop). Hit and Raise.

Damage: 29 (!). That's 6 wounds for her. Since poor Martha Bullock is a Townsfolk Extra, that's going to be enough to drop her.

Gusano's card for the next round: QD))

The fleshy, sinewy skeleton twists as Wilder's boot comes down. It crabs sideways just as Wilder attempts to stomp on it, then lashes out with a bony claw. The thug, seeing Jackie defy his attack, starts swinging the shotgun even harder, attempting to break bones rather than knock her back. "Die, bitch! Die!" he screams at the top of his lungs.

Meanwhile, Sol steps out from behind the box, whip in his trembling hands. With a terrified yell, he starts snapping it at the cultist who'd shot at him. The frenzied lashing surprises the gunman, who yelps as the bullwhip tears bleeding lacerations on his face, arms...neck. Burbling, he goes down in a bloody heap.

Sol stares at the bleeding cultist. "I...I killed him." He mutters in shock. The whip tumbles from his hand.

Then Sol himself tumbles, blood blooming from his chest, as the gibbering cultist who shot Martha turns his gun on the now-exposed shopkeeper.

"Seth..." Sol manages, before collapsing in a heap.

"Your allies are dropping around you, Marshal." the mad preacher says gently, as if he were in a confessional instead of pitched battle. "It is time for you to acknowledge that you have lost. You cannot win. You cannot separate me from the worms, either...they are always with me. See."

Then he flicks his sleeve...and Bullock watches the Reverend's hand morph into a glistening purple tentacle, that slithers around him and begins wrapping him tight...

Death... death and mayhem all around. There is something in Bullock that wants to break down. With an immense effort, he beats this instinct down, his eyes narrowing at the sight of Cusano's tentacle hand.

His pistol was somewhere strewn on the floor.... so the only thing he had available right now was the bundle of dynamite in his hand.

Bullock pulls a match from his pocket and lights it, then ignites a single stick of dynamite, shoving it into Cusano's pocket.

Okay, trying the following...
Lighting a single stick, so that it goes off next round. Then pushing it into Cusano's clothes on the side of his tentacle hand (so he might have trouble pulling it out again), then dive away and wait for the blast.
Sooo... what do I roll? :-)

The dynamite, wet or not, still has enough kick to knock the Reverend back into the crates and daze him for a few moments, but Bullock only has time to note that Jackie is not doing so well beneath the beating she's taking from the cultist. In fact, the last blow hits her square in the solar plexus and sends her staggering back before dropping her down the black pit, out of sight.

The burly cultists grunts and kicks the trap door down, and starts hauling a crate over it to keep any more do-gooders from coming up from below. Bullock has been cut off from his allies. He's now quite alone.

((OOC: Reverend Gusano gets a chance to avoid the boom. He rolls Agility at -2 (because of Bullock's failure to get it where it would do more harm.

There's two fellows with rifles and one with a shotgun.

((OOC: You can still take an action. The only guy you can actually reach with the rest of your movement is the cultist with the shotgun.))

And reach him I shall try to do.

Han takes a quick glance around and sets his sights on the first cultist he sees.  He is long past the point of trying to negotiate with these villains. They have already caused and unconscious amount of pain on this town.

He leaps towards the man, and tries to hit him twice, once in the torso and then across the back of the head.

01:54, Today: Doctor Han Lee rolled 6,4 using 1d10,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 6,4. Fighting 1.

01:54, Today: Doctor Han Lee rolled 2,4 using 1d10,1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,4. Fighting 2.

So one hit on the cultist.

The board in Bullock's hand vibrates as he brings it crshing down on the deranged reverend, who staggers back. Blood slides down his head, and he laughs. "Good! Good! Some fight left in you yet!" he crows.

The cultists shoot wildly. Han Lee feels a bullet crease his side, which sends him staggering into the crates. A second shot traces a line of fire across his thigh.

Bullock, meanwhile, is able to avoid the first shot of the babbling cultist near him, but the second one takes him in the shoulder, distracting him enough for the Reverend to catch his breath and renew his assault.

Gusano laughs wildly. "The Princess of Worms saw in you a worthy foe, Bullock!" he laughs as the blade tears into the Marshal's belly. He stabs again and again. "When you are gone, her plans will bear fruit! Her power will spread! All of Deadwod shall despair!"

((OOC: I opt not to soak that, so the Rev keeps the wound. On his action, he attempts to Unshake:

But he'd take a few more of these bastards with him. And if his deputies would survive, then maybe, just maybe, he could get them something to work with.

He keeps staggering, but more deliberately now into the direction of his pistol.
How many bullets are still in there? I'll need just one... just need to make it count.

"Perhaps you shall meet her. Perhaps not." The crazed Reverend says as the door behind him cracks open. "But for now...adios!"

And then he runs for the open trap door, leaping down into the darkness below.

The last purple-skinned cultist goggles for a moment. "Oh, shit!" He says, whirling around toward the newly opened door and pulling the trigger...only for a nasty }SNAP!{ to echo in the room as the bolt on his rifle breaks. "Shitshitshitshit!" He says, then runs for the trap door himself. "Hey Reverend...wait fer me!" he shouts as he tumbles into darkness.

((OOC: Cultists go. Reverend attempts to Unshake.

21:04, Today: Reverend Alonzo Gusano rolled 3,4 using d8-1,d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 4,5. Unshake.

The Reverend realizes it's time to get going. He makes a break for the trap door, since Bullock is Shaken and can't attack him, and Han Lee had to move to attack the other cultist.

He moves to the trap door and drops down into the darkness. He's Running, which is a -2 to actions. This is important because he needs to make an Agility check to avoid damage from the fall down into the pit.

21:06, Today: Reverend Alonzo Gusano rolled 1 using 1d6 with rolls of 1. Running die.

21:13, Today: Reverend Alonzo Gusano rolled 3,0 using d8-3,d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of 6,3. Jump! Almost there, so he uses his last remaining red chip for a bonus.

21:14, Today: Reverend Alonzo Gusano rolled 8 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+2)8. Red Chip. And that will be an 11 total, so he passes with flying colors.

With his Wound, that means he moves at 6 for the round (5, +1 for the Run). He's not incredibly hard to catch, but he's now in the total darkness of the cellar.

The last cultist, realizing he's been left behind, takes a potshot at the now busted door and then runs after the preacher. Wilder has Medium Cover from the door frame

21:18, Today: Worm Cultists rolled -1 using 1d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 1. Shooting! That's a natural 1 and his gun is El Cheapo, so it jams and he abandons it.

he leaps down after the Reverend...

21:19, Today: Worm Cultists rolled 2 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2. Agility.

...and falls flat on his face. he takes damage, but nowhere near enough to actually hurt him. It slows him down, though, as he has to stand from prone and hobble into the darkness.

Bullock squints into the gloom. The light from the storeroom above and the open cellar door don't provide much light, either for Janet or Bullock. But rage gives Bullock clarity, and he spies a form creeping towards the open cellar door.

"Please, must there be such shouting. There are gravely wounded people here, and if you have light, then the sheriff could use you in the basement." Han calls from inside. He tries not to let his nerves and the overwhelming craziness of the situation affect his voice. "Could've been worse... we could be the ones getting arrested." James says with a slight chuckle in his voice.  "Still need to find my pistol."

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

Lonefeather points to the soldiers behind them, who still have rifles drawn. "We are being arrested."

"Keep moving, you!" One of the soldiers grunts, motioning towards the road.

"He did say we were all being brought in until this mess was sorted. I'm still hurt, you're hurt, that deputy's hurt, Bullock's hurt, that cult leader chick is hurt...I think the only one of us right now who could put up a fight is the Chinaman."

Soldiers begin bringing out bodies and the wounded on stretchers.

The nearest soldier shoves Wilder. "Move!"

Re: Chapter 4.4: Cult of Worms (Deadwood)

James chuckles, "Guess I missed that part."

His gaze shifts back to the troop who shoved him. A level of scrutiny washes over him as only a former soldier could have. "Settle down there fella, ain't any need to get rough. I'm in no condition to cause much trouble." He motions to the nasty wounds left by the rattler which are still seeping blood.

"Frankly, I don't give a good goddamn if you're hopping around on stumps, Reb." The soldier replies back. "We've got a medic who'll see to you. Get stepping."

Jake shook his head and went in the general direction he'd been shoved towards. "Why do folks always assume that other folks care about their war, Jimmy? Reb this, Yank that, blah blah blah."

James gave a short bark of a laugh. "Couldn't tell ya. All you white people look the same to me, whether you're in blue or gray."
