August 21st, 1880

The year is 1880, but the history is not our own.

The treaty city of Deadwood lies smack dab in in the middle of the Sioux Nation. It's a city on the edge. Over a third of the population makes its living from saloons, gambling, or prostitution. The knowledge that the Sioux could decide to wipe out the entire town at any time lurks in the back of every inhabitant’s mind, encouraging a philosophy of “eat, drink, and be merry, for tomorrow we may die.” The fortunes being made in the hills around the town are spent or gambled away almost as fast as they are acquired.

But now that fragile balance is threatened. Tensions between the white man and the Sioux, never good, have been strained to the breaking point by a series of ghastly murders. The armies of the Union, no longer engaged in war with the Confederacy, turns to retake the Indian nation that was carved out of it's lands.

War is coming to the Dakotas.

The cult of Raven is stirring this pot, and when it boils over, Deadwood will be drowned in blood. But there is hope. A new movement, the Ghost Dance, is growing among the Sioux. The Ravenites will stop at nothing to stamp this fragile hope into the ground, but a small group of unlikely heroes may yet provide the key to stopping The Last Sons once and for all...

Chip Audit!

Please tell me what your current Chips are! We've started the first chapter of the game. Those of you with fewer than 3 chips, draw up to 3. Most of you should have more.

No one has spent any adventure cards during the prelude. Remember that you have these resources...you'll lose them at the end of the session. Unlike the other game I run, Adventure Cards can't be kept between sessions.

If you want to earn a free chip, send me an in-character recap describing the story so far from your character's perspective. You can send this to me via PM...I'll post recaps on a shiny new thread for you all to peruse. Color of the chip awarded will depend on how interesting and creative the story you send me is. However, I know that some of you have spoilers about your characters that you may not want to reveal yet. That's fine...just give me something I can post and indicate which parts are spoilery and should be hidden.

I award Nate Williams and Black Jack 1 Red Chip each for hashing out a plan, even if they can't quite agree on the details. You both also get 1 White chip each for insights into the nature of the Flying Death menace.

Xiaohan and Moses, you each get 1 White chip for excellent RP.

Nate, I suppose this is a lesson for you...if you have a penalty on a roll, and roll within spitting distance of success, spend the Red chip for the bonus over blowing white chips like mad. I'll refund your white chips, but keep this lesson in mind.

I award Moses 1 Blue Chip for his taking on an entire squad of the Black Regiment just with his hickory stick and some holy wind.

I award The Professor 1 Red Chip because his Trouble Magnet hindrance just went off.

Legend Chip!

We have finished the First plot Point of this game, so I am adding 1 Legend Chip to the fate pot. When rolling for your chips, roll d36. If your roll aces, you'll know you got the Legend chip. There's only one, though, so once it's claimed it's gone.

The Legend chip must be used the session it is drawn, or else it converts into a Blue chip at the end of the session.

Discard and redraw chips!

Discard your chips and redraw up to 3. if you have any Blue chips, however, you can keep them...they are bonuses for really good RP.

Please discard and redraw your Adventure Cards. I want to encourage a "use them or lose them" mentality for Adventure cards, so I'm not letting them be kept between sessions. Post your new cards on the Adventure Card thread.

Janet Weiss keeps her White Chip for the maverick reference, as well as for engaging James Wilder on that prelude thread.

Art C. Wiley has been meeting famous folk, so he gets an extra chip draw for his brushes with greatness. His interactions also will lead to a special award for all of you. Since his prelude is not finished, he gets to keep his legend chip.

James Wilder hasn't been active long enough to have made much of a mark, but that will be changing soon.

Can a person use multiple blue/red/legend chips on the same roll? I.e. if I roll a 3, then use a red and get a 2, can I then use a blue to tack onto my current total of 5?

Yes. You can spend as many chips on a roll as you think you can afford. If you spend a white after you spend a red or blue (or legend), ALL the dice get rerolled, including the bonus dice.

Experience Audit!

I have discovered a mistake in my accounting of the party's XP. Players who were in the game for a while have the correct amount, but due to an error I made marking down the total party XP in my scratch pad, many of the characters added after the second advance didn't get it.

Novice characters should have 10 XP, which is 2 Advances, as well as a third "free" Advance if you linked your character's background to another PC.

Characters with Veteran o' The Weird West should have a total of 30 xp. I'm doing an audit to see if everyone has the correct number of advances, and the results will be in PMs.

So, it looks like the current plotlines have reached a good middle ground. Jack McCall is subdues in Hickok's Revenge, while the party has made it to Bear Butte and is starting to get involved in Sioux politics. What with the end of a couple of Interlude/Prelude threads, we have nearly 900 posts spread out throughout the various Chapter 3 material.

That means it's long past time for some Experience! I'm not ending the session, but it's time to refresh some in-game resources.

Experience!

Everyone gets 5 XP! That, along with the experience audit I did a while ago, brings the group to 15 xp (35 for those with VotWW).

Advance!

With that 5 xp bump comes a New Advance! Let me know what you'd like to spend it on, and if it's something that should be worked into the ongoing story.


Adventure Cards!

In order to promote more Adventure card use, it's time to stir the pot a little. If you have adventure cards you don't want to use, discard them and redraw.

If you are stuck with the Uh-Oh or Reinforcements cards, give them to me instead of discarding them. I will use them as I see fit. I'm going to make a change to how the "bad for the party" cards are used.

If you've played an Adventure Card this session, don't worry. I'm counting this as a new session for Adventure Card purposes.

New Session!

Now that the major fight is over in the Wicasa Council thread, I can officially end Chapter 3. Chapter 4 marks the start of a new session. I'll be drawing new Fate chips for my GM pool, as well as new chips for my NPCs who have yet to be involved in any of the Chapter 4 threads.

Time Skip!

The folks on Bear Butte will be skipping a couple of days. Give me an idea of what you folks are doing with your downtime when I finish the post for your group.

Experience!

It's time to award some experience. Everyone gains 5 XP for being involved in the Chapter 3 threads. That will put everyone at 20 xp total.

Han Lee, Kate Hillary, you get to add 5 xp as well, to keep the 2 of you on par with the rest of the party.

Advance!

Since all the PCs have gained 5 XP, that means everyone gets an Advance! Please let me know what it is you'd like to improve with your Advance.

New Rank!

This Advance puts everyone at Seasoned Rank. That means access to new powers, edges, attribute bumps, and so on. Those of you with the Veteran o' the Wild West edge will now be Veteran Rank.

Fate Chips!

Everyone got something of a stash of chips, and some of you are involved in action. Thus, I'm not going to have you discard your chips...you get to keep the ones you have. In fact...

Any character with less than 5 chips may draw up to 5.

Adventure Cards!

Everyone may discard and redraw their Adventure Cards. Since you're all Seasoned (or Veteran) rank now, you get to draw 3 cards (or 4 for veterans). The Uh-Oh! and Reinforcement cards go to the GM...indicate you've drawn those, then draw again.

If you are controlling more than one character, you get an additional draw for each character over the first. This does not include groups of Extras, though. Each character can only play one adventure card for free.
