So I've got to ask, because I've always been curious about this... does Pinnacle basically steal your IP when you submit these XD?

@ Katy: I will, thanks!

@ Belle: Steal? No. They purchased the IP. But yeah, the contract I signed gave them the rights. I'm fine with that, because I'm doing this for writing credits and the chance to get more substantial work in the future.

Good News, Everyone!

That's good, they seem so nice.  The only time I've actually ever communicated with them was some emails with Jodi Black over some of the Kickstarter thingies but that's not really the core function of their business.

I admit I've heard terrible things over the years about various publishers screwing their contributors by stealing IP, not paying agreed on fees, rejecting submissions and then publishing something exactly like what they just rejected, etc. but it's all hearsay so you don't really know.

The economics of creative work have always fascinated me.  I could wax laconic on it for paragraphs, but it suffices to say it fascinates me a handful of people become so wealthy despite not contributing a proportionate amount of actual value (for example Jimi Hendrix never achieved Justin Bieber's level of financial success).  It's just bizarre that it actually makes perfect sense why this happens, the kerfuffle of failure is just amazing and lends some deep insights into how flawed human reasoning is in the aggregate despite being sound at each individual stage of the process.  The game theory at play is staggering.

I apologize, I'm on an economics kick here lately and I don't know why.

Still, after seeing the popularity of Twilight, I've been bizarrely inspired.  If quality doesn't matter (apparently), I've often wondered if it's not best to just keep publishing terrible books year after year under various pseudonyms until one becomes popular.  That seems like the most realistic way the average person is ever going to become wealthy some days XD

Good News, Everyone!

I was profoundly amused when I saw that the author of those 50 shades of grey books has written another one.
This time "Grey".
And its neither a sequel nor prequel, it's apparently the same story, told from the guy's perspective.

Re: Good News, Everyone!

There were a few, but not all of them were published...

Savage Tale number 8 "Prisoner of Pain" was done by me. There's at least one onesheet "Hitler's Knights" set in WW2. I also submitted "The Race" to Pinnacle, IIRC, but that was moved over and published by Triple Ace Games eventually.
There was another one sheet about bank robbers, a wendigo and a sasquatch that - I think - ultimately got stuck in development hell. :-)
And I did a few translations/locale checks for TAG and Pinnacle for their Daring Tales of Adventures and Weird War 2 settings.

Re: Good News, Everyone!

!!! Bank-robbing wendigo and/or sasquatch! Aw, that sounds like what I'd most like to play.

[cynic mode] -and if you want that kind of huge sucess writing crap, just be female and write something amazingly mysogynistic. The publishers thus get free rein to print the unusual and "edgy" submission without attracting claims of sexism themselves. In a culture that simultaneously tells teenage girls to place their ideas of self-worth and cultural liberty on being sexually available and that actually expressing sexuality makes you Bad, rape fetishism is the logical high-sales hotspot for the Romance genre. It's just that most Romance writers moved on from bodice-rippers 60 years ago and aren't as unabashedly horrible people as the author of 50 Shades.

So - does that mean you're actually stealing from a food bank/pantry or morgue?  *Flashbacks to "Murders in the Rue Morgue" crossed with "The Bank Robbery"*

Of wendigoes and sammiches

I imagine a wendigo would just take the money and leave a highly conspicuous trail into a nice, remote area...the irony of eating humans enticed by greed for inedible things would be...delicious.

Although now you bring up heist films I can't help but imagine some kind of Italian Job/Bonny & Clyde mashup with the love affair of the bank-robbing star-crossed monster types centre stage. Also highly organised tiny steam wagons.

Hah - that would've been a fun twist as well.

But no, the story was aimed to be an introduction to the Weird West and I ran it as such to my group.
Basically, the heroes are in a small town when the bank gets robbed. They only get involved after the robbers have taken off and the town marshal forms a posse.

They chase the robbers into the mountains, stumble across a cabin (of course), then find out a mountain man has killed the robbers, who also is about to turn into a wendigo (which is does right now at the opportune moment, of course).

Then the wendigo takes off with the Mountain Man's kids, so the posse chases after him still, higher into the mountains, a sasquatch gets involved by leaving clues about how to find the wendigo...

I remember they rejected the original ending as being too dark.

To be fair, they chased a wendigo into a remote place...that doesn't end well.

-but you could bring actual folklore into it, and have the kids temporising by being generous and polite to daddy wendigo until the posse got there to shoot him enough to drag him into the fire. It still sounds really good and something I'd loved to have played.

! Was this the group of Deadlands newbies I tried to turn into a circus troupe?
