Yeah, I can see that. The Deadwood tv show was a great mine for character ideas, though, and Doc Cochran was made up for the show, so maybe that name was floating through someone's hear during writing.

Anybody here got/play DL: Noir? I like the midway-point setting between Weird and Wasted Wests.

I gotta say, I love the whole "we don't know the whole story" element to a lot of the Deadlands meta, but I do get tired of reading "But you'll just have to wait, pardner/brainer/shamus"

I have it, don't really know what to do with it.

I had an idea at one point for supposing that Prohibition had come to the Union but not the Confederacy, and the PCs were involved in a bathtub spook juice distillery running illegal hooch across the border at the most breakneck pace a Model T can manage, but I couldn't really get beyond that basic concept.

I have it as well, haven't read the entire thing.. skimmed it for a bit of an idea as to what was being presented.  It looks neat, but something just doesn't quite seem to mesh for me with the other titles in the Deadlands universe.  That impression might change once I've read all the new (Reloaded) stuff.

the DLN Companion really opens up the setting more, I think, since it opens up a few more time periods to play in.

@Stray: I agree, I find 20s Chicago really fun to play with, although the 50s SLC campaign confuses the dickens out of me.

@batrean: I can see that. It's a really different feel, and mechanically different to boot. I feel like it does a decent job of bridging the HOER and DLR systems mechanics.

@Belle: Funnily enough, thats what happened in the timeline. the Companion covers Prohibition era Chicago, stating that the south is getting rich off rum-runners.

I'm confuzzled.... what's "SLC"?   Was this something from DLN or the Companion?  (Haven't read all of them yet.)

Re: On Lawdogs, druids and Holy Moses

SLC = Salt Lake City/City O' Gloom.

The Noir Companion expands Noir to encompass Chicago in the 20s, Shan Fan in the late 30s, Lost Angels in the 40s, and SLC, Salt Lake City, in the 50s. The companion includes a mini-plot-point campaign for each locale, and the one for SLC confuses me just in what certain characters motivations are.

Thank you!  I was thinking a city reference but couldn't bring up Salt Lake City.. kept wanting to tie to St Louis or somewhere on the Mississippi.

They don't know that, though: ya gotta RP-justify the card to get it to work, and the soldiers probably aren't going to believe "the house started it". So...maybe let Maddox do the talking? Crazy subsidence you get 'round here...

On a completely unrelated note:

Has Charles Guiteau ever been mentioned in Deadlands? Is he some sort of Reckoner servitor? Whispered to by demons? Or just a sad, disturbed man?

Charles Guiteau? Wrote a speech in favor of Grant in the 18...79? Election. changed it to in favor of Garfield when Grant didn't run. Thought his speech caused Garfield to win, demanded a governmental appointment. Ambassador to France. When no one took this man seriously, he shot Garfield.

Actually, yes. Look up the timeline in Last Sons...it mentions that Garfield is killed in the canon storyline, though it doesn't mention the assassin by name.

On dubious folk heroes

I just finished reading "Devil in the White City" by Eric Larsen. One of the side plots is about the Chicago Mayor Harrison, who was assassinated by a guy called Prendergast. Prendergast's motive was that the mayor had - in his imagination - promised him a position on the city council.
When the mayor didn't follow through with this promise, he shot and killed him.

Seems to be a recurring theme for the time :-)
