Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

quote:
Von Steinhof burps.
"This is getting interesting. I applaud you, Mr. Tolliver! Such great... entertainment, just to impress your guest from Europe. Very good, very good! So how this goes on, now?"

"This is no show." Tolliver growls. "I don't know who you jokers all are, and I don't fucking care. You've worn out your welcome."

quote:
He points at Carter.
"You shoot the men with the rifles, yes? Then someone shoots you, I believe?"

Carter grins. "They can shoot at me all they like. They're in for a surprise."

quote:
"Then maybe you", he turns to Wild Bill, swaying for a moment from the sudden movement, "shoot whoever has shot him, then someone shoots you... I do hope I will be left at the end to clap!" He chuckles.

"Actually, I was planning on shooting you." Wild Bill says calmly.

quote:
then he grows serious again.

"But... what is the hidden beast in this house? We have heard it scream, but will you show it to us, Mr. Tolliver?"

"What the fuck are you talking abou-" Tolliver begins, but he's interrupted as Von Steinhof suddenly rises into the air!

Or, more specifically, the chair Von Steinhoff is sitting in rises, taking him with it. As he rises into the air, there's a flurry of activity as bottles, poker chips, shot glasses, and random bric-a-brac go flying everywhere.

"Holy shit!"

"What the...?"

People begin shouting and pointing and ducking as Von Steinhof's chair rises higher and higher, up to the balcony on the second floor, almost at eye level with the guards.

Then the chair flips over, flinging Von Steinhof back down to the ground.

And instantly there's a scrabbling, scratching sound as words appear on every flat surface in the Bella Union:

B̷̶̧ȩ̕ c͠a̶r̸̛e͝f̨u̡l̷ ̷w̛h̴͟ą͜͞t͞ y͞͝o̶u͘͏ ̶wi̵̸s͘h̴ ͘fo̸r̷

And then all Hell breaks loose...

((OOC: 00:30, Today: Bella Union Saloon rolled 1,5 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,5. Resisting Trick.

Congrats! You've successfully goaded it into revealing itself! Wait...is that really a good thing?

Because now everyone inside the Bella Union needs to make a Fear check (-5 for the local Fear level, -2 for the house's Fear ability, + Grit).

Rolls for NPCs:

Hickok is Immune to Fear.
Nicodemus (yes he's still around): 12:34, Today: Nicodemus Whateley rolled 5,0 using d8-1,d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 6,1. Fear! Success. Nic has seen far worse in his day.
Cyrus Tolliver: 12:35, Today: Cyrus Tolliver rolled -2,-1 using d10-3,d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of 1,2. Fear! Fail. Cyrus was not expecting his saloon to come to life!
Brett Bones: 12:39, Today: Brett Bones rolled 4,0 using d6-5,d6-5, rerolling max with rolls of (6+3)9,5. Fear! Surprisingly, a success, considering he was flat terrified of the 'Glom and Mourning Mist
Darius Carter: 12:40, Today: Darius Carter rolled 0,1 using d8-2,d8-2, rerolling max with rolls of 2,3. Fear! Fail. Carter may be a bloodthirsty hexslinging sonovabitch, but this gets to him.
Townsfolk (under my control, the ones I've lent out will make their own rolls): 12:45, Today: The Stray, on behalf of Townsfolk, rolled -6,3,-4,-6,4,-6,-2 using d6-7,d6-7,d6-7,d6-7,d6-7,d6-7,d6-7, rerolling max with rolls of 1,(6+4)10,3,1,(6+5)11,1,5. Fear! As expected, most of them Fail. Honestly, I'm surprised there were any successes at all.
Maddox: 12:47, Today: Maddox rolled 1,7 using d8-4,d6-4, rerolling max with rolls of 5,(6+5)11. Fear! You know...I was expecting him to fail this, since he's a Doubting Thomas. The power of denial strikes again!
Hyram Burns: 12:49, Today: Hyram Burns rolled -4,-2 using d6-5,d6-5, rerolling max with rolls of 1,3. Fear! Fail, as I suspected he would.
Mr. Sebastian: 12:50, Today: Mr. Roger Sebastian Whateley rolled 4,4 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,4. Fear! Success. Sebastian gets a bonus here, because he actually lives in one of this things.

Fear effect rolls: 4,3,3,9. That's...that's kinda fucked up. Burns is Panicked and runs around screaming like a little girl, but Carter, Bones, and Tolliver all get an Adrenaline Surge, adding +2 to Trait and damage rolls on their next action! The house has just made them more dangerous.

Oh, and Von Steinhof takes d6+1 points of falling damage.))

Resolve Fear rolls, and then I'll move on to the house's actual turn.

Logan knew better than to engage in trash talk with these folks. It had been too late to talk things down, and that was before his European counterpart had decided to go and stir up the pot. Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

Screaming patrons run around heading to whatever looks like convenient cover. Hyram Burns legs it towards the stairs, then trips and lands on them fairly hard. before curling into a ball and sobbing.

Brett Bones looks around wildly, but Darius Carter just starts laughing his head off and Roger Sebastian looks no more annoyed than he already did.

The chair continues to bedevil Von Steinhof, slamming him repeatedly with enough force to crack the wood.

In the corridor, the bullet holes in the wall from Wilder's attack tremble, and suddenly the bullets shoot back out! One of them clips Wilder pretty good, but while it stings, it didn't seem to have done any serious damage.

Back in the main hall, Tolliver stands straight. "Stop this!" he bellows, raising a fist and shaking it at empty air. "I command you! Stop this now!"

The only reply is an ashtray smashing him in the face. He howls and staggers back as the glass ashtray shatters, but his head is made of harder stuff. He comes away with only a bloody nose.

"So be it." He snarls. "This is my joint. I don't care what it thinks. I'll make it listen!"

Meanwhile, Hyram Burns wails and crouches around the stairs as poker chips sling past as fast as bullets. He cringes, using the stair for cover as the assault continues.

Out in the street behind Jackie and Katy, a mist begins to gather in the crater from the battle. Slowly, the mist creeps towards the two, who are intent on listening to the fracas inside...

((OOC: The Bella Union Now takes its actual turn. It can make up to 5 attack without a MAP. It starts throwing things at Von Steinhof (he's really got it annoyed), James Wilder (who shot it up a bit going after Nicodemus), Cyrus Tolliver (who presumes to be the saloon's master), and Hyram Burns (who created it). It makes 2 attacks at Von Steinhof, because he's really annoyed it.

Von Steinhof: 22:33, Today: Bella Union Saloon rolled 6,6,3 using d10,d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 6,6,3. Throwing. 2 hits

Damage 1: 8, Which is just a Shaken result.
Damage 2: 15, which is 2 Wounds and Shaken in you don't soak.

Wilder: 22:33, Today: Bella Union Saloon rolled 4,2 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,2. Throwing. Hit.

Damage: 8, which is a Shaken

Tolliver: 22:33, Today: Bella Union Saloon rolled 9,2 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 9,2. Throwing. Hit and Raise

Damage: 17, which is 3 wounds for Tolliver unless he soaks.

he spends a chip to try just that.

22:41, Today: Cyrus Tolliver rolled 10,7 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+4)10,(6+1)7. Soak.

But wait! He has that +2 bonus from his Adrenaline Surge. That actually makes that 12. He soaks all 3 wounds.

Burns: 22:34, Today: Bella Union Saloon rolled 2,2 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,2. Throwing. Miss.

Bella Union card: JS

But wait! There's more!

I spring some hidden monsters on y'all. 'Cause why let the people inside the saloon have all the fun?

The Mourning Mist rises from the crater and starts sneaking toward Jackie and Katy. I need you two to make Notice checks vs the mist's Stealth (which is a hidden roll). }:D))

Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

The bloody mist flows towards The Bella Union, drawn by the sounds of life. Faces boil out of the mist, appearing, screaming, and vanishing in seconds...and neither Katy nor Jackie notice the mist before it rolls over them.

A mad whirl of memories are forced into their minds, battering at their sanity...

quote:
...the door is thick iron. The gas...it choked...she scrabbles against the door, beating it with her fists. "Let me out!" she screams...no, screaming requires air. This was more of a strained whimper. All the air was being sucked away.

"I'm sorry, my dear." comes the scientist's voice. "But I can't do that. It would rather go against the grain of what I'm trying to accomplish. There must be sacrifices, my dear. For Science."...
...the brave was strong, but the girl's grip on the whip around his neck was stronger. How could a woman be so strong? He didn't understand...she smiled and she twisted the whipcord tighter. "Now, that wasn't very nice. But you know what they say...every cloud has a silver lining. Now you'll get to serve the greater good, and we remove a redskin from the world."

Everything swam in the brave's vision. It was all going dark. "You know, you really should think of this as a victory." The girl continues, though he's long past caring about her words. "Yes. A victory for Science!"...

He beat beat his fists against the iron door. No! No! He'd faced down indians, been dragged near two hundred miles behind a horse, fought and watched men died in the War...he wasn't supposed to die like this! Not like this!

"Damn you...Burns..." he gasped as the vents sucked the air out of the room.

The scientist's voices crackles over some sort of speaking tube. "I'm terribly sorry for your discomfort, but I do appreciate your investment in my enterprise! I want you to know that your contribution is vital for this enterprise. For Science itself!"

...more visions, visions of dying men. Miners, clawing at that iron door as the air is sucked away. Miners, townsfolk, indians out late, in the woods, knocked in the back of the head or just ambushed in the dark. The world going dark and heads going light as suffocation kicked in, and always those same two words following them into the black...

"For Science!"

"For Science!"

"For Science!"

The mist whirls around them, sending images of horror at them...but it doesn't stop with them. It rolls toward the small gap they'd opened in between the board and the wall, and then seeped into the saloon proper...

((OOC: 22:50, Today: Secret Roll: Mourning Mist rolled 8,2 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 8,2. Stealth. Neither of those is going to be good enough. The creeping mist monster gets The Drop on you two.

It has Improved Sweep, so it gets to make a single attack to affect you both.

05:44, Today: Mourning Mist rolled 9,8 using d8+4,d6+4, rerolling max with rolls of 5,4. Fighting (with The Drop). Yup, that's a hit, and it's a Raise on Katy. Not that it matters, since the power the Mist is using doesn't benefit from a Raise.

I need you both to make me a Spirit roll (-2), and then a Fear check (-5 Fear Level, -2 from the monster's Fear ability, + Grit).

The mist then continues past you two and flows into the Saloon to find even more targets.

Mist Card: 2C))

Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

Katy's eyes went wide as the mist surrounded her. She inwardly cursed for not seeing something sneaking up on her like that, and her mind swam momentarily as the disembodied flock of memories slid past whatever mental defenses she had and entered her consciousness. She watched the scenes play out before her, but in the end...

OOC: That is a 10 including the -7 penalty for the fear check (she has +2 grit, +2 for being Brave)

Spirit check is an 8 (including the -2), so a raise there (if a raise gives her +2 to the fear check, she wouldn't need the blue chip).

12:54, Today: Catherine Hays Cox rolled 8 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+2)8. Blue chip.
12:53, Today: Catherine Hays Cox rolled 0,2 using d6-3,d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of 3,5. Fear.
12:57, Today: Catherine Hays Cox rolled 5,8 using d8-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 7,(6+4)10. Spirit.

...all she had to say was "Fuck science." She mentally added Burns to her list of names to check out while in town.

As the thing made its way into the Bella Union, she shook her head. "Y'all don't come back, now."

She returned to trying to pry the wood off the house, and put a little extra effort in it this time. She had some degree of success in this most recent attempt, at least, her knife finding purchase as Katy's muscles strained to remove the boarding on the door.

OOC: Success and raise. Used a red chip for a total of 8. Still assuming a -1 penalty (-2 for difficulty and +1 for knife). If the penalty is only -1 at this point (offset by her survival knife), Katy wouldn't use the red chip and would just take the single success.
13:05, Today: Catherine Hays Cox rolled 5 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5. red chip (if needed).
13:03, Today: Catherine Hays Cox rolled 2,3 using d4-1,d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 3,4. Strength (own, not assisting).

Katy heaves, and the nails give with a tortured squeal that grates at the nereves (not fun when they're already jangled by the mist's touch). The board is now loose enough to be passed through.

Inside the Bella Union, the blood-red mist is curling along the floor, generally evading notice amid the general commotion...

((OOC: The Spirit check is to avoid the effects of the critter's attack, so the blue chip is needed.

The strength roll is at parity, though, so you get your Red Chip back and have freed enough of the board to move through it (though it counts as Difficult Terrain.

Move if you wish, and then draw for next turn))

OOC: Move? I am a gunfighter, sir. Unless there is something that she sees that requires her bodily intervention, moving is not on Katy's agenda. Her gussied-up pistol is in hand, though.

So what does Katy see at this point? Because if she catches sight of Logan, James, or Darius, she might have some sort of verbal reaction. And certainly a mental one. Though if there's guns pointing everywhere, having some cover behind the outer walls of the Bella Union sounds just fine to me, especially after taking stock of what's inside.

The mist curls along the floor of the Bella Union as people run willy-nilly. People crouch behind the bar, or find cover under tables, while a pair of gunslingers have pistols at the ready.

Katy's attention is drawn to one of them, the man in the black hat laughing his head off and pointing a very fancy pistol of his own around the room. He looks over at the opened window and grins. "Well, howdy there, Ranger Cox!" He says. "Fancy seeing you here!"

Katy narrowed her eyes. Darius Carter? Here?

"Mighty fine day, ain't it Mister Carter?" Katy slid slightly to her left so most of the important parts of her body were behind the outer wall of the Bella Union. Her pistol, however, was out. Not pointed at anyone in particular, yet, but it wouldn't take but a flinch for that to happen. "Now, why ya threatenin' all these poor folk with that gun o' yours? Sure looks like you were just enjoyin' a nice game o' cards. Can't imagine the folks at this fine establishment deserve any threatinin' gestures."

She did look around to see if there was anyone else she recognized and she spoke quietly to Jackie. "Mind pointing out the friendlies? If I start shootin', I don't wanna hurt anybody on our side."

Boom.

Let's see how the Fear roll goes.

19:47, Today: Jackie Wells rolled -1,-1 using d8-4,d6-4, rerolling max with rolls of 3,3. Fear Check!

Of course. Well let's math here... if you Red Chipped it, you'd have to roll a 3 or better, so the odds say Red Chip it. Let's go for it.

19:48, Today: Jackie Wells rolled 6 using 1d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 4. Chipperoni.

Whoops, forgot there's no +2, so that's only a 4, so she fails with a 3.

Jackie felt the Mist come up over her. She almost panicked... except she remembered the future. She had seen this before, and had seen worse... and that made her panic even more.

So, Jackie probably has a heart attack and dies. But in case she doesn't I'll draw the card anyway.

It wasn't a heart attack, but Jackie was touched by the fear nonetheless. She seemed to age a bit in Katy's vision.

"Idiot." Brett Bones muttered as he watched Carter matching wits with that Ranger Lady from Arizona. "This ain't no time to flirt."

He looked around the room, at the cowing, running people and the objects flying every which way. "Too rich for my blood." He muttered, grabbing his stake and stuffing it into his pockets before legging it toward the back door.

He was feeling pretty good with himself when he turned the corner...and almost bowled right into James Wilder!

"Oh, fuck."

((OOC: Not a heart attack, but close...

19:15, Today: The Stray, on behalf of Jackie Wells, rolled 19 using 1d20+2, rerolling max with rolls of 17. Fear effects for Wild Cards.

quote:
19-20 The Mark of Fear: The hero is Shaken and also suffers some sort of cosmetic physical alteration - a white streak forms in the hero's hair, his eyes twitch constantly, or some other minor alteration. This reduces his Charisma by 1

Brett Bones gets an action. While Carter and Katy exchange witty repartee, Bones attempts to head out the back. He Runs. He rolls a 3 on his Run die.

This gets him quite far. Unfortunately for him, it also puts him face-to-face with James Wilder, who has a beef with him.

Card: BJ!. Well, then. If he survives his run-in with Wilder, he might have a shot of surviving this.))

James Wilder, you are currently Shaken. Deal with that, and then it's your turn.

Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

OOC: Burn a white chip to unshake and act normally.
James heard Carter and Bones which drew him farther into the saloon. His hands worked as he moved down the hall with an efficiency which comes from years and years of repetitive motion.

Click click click click click click out came six spent shells - Click click click click click click in when six live ones. He spun the cylinder close and surveyed the room for a moment. Too many folks he thought before ducking behind the nearby table.

OOC: Moving into the main room, which looks to cost me 5 out of 6 movement ... move+duck behind the gaming table with my last movement.

23:04, Today: James Wilder drew the single card: QS using a deck of 54 cards. Initiative.
ever completely misread something? ... me too!
James smiles as he reloads, "Well hi there Brett, was coming here to look for you. This must be my lucky day..." he says before unloading the all six of the fresh rounds into Brett Bones' gut.

OOC: Fannin' the hammer!
23:09, Today: James Wilder rolled 4,0,3,5,8,6,3 using d12-2,d12-2,d12-2,d12-2,d12-2,d12-2,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 6,2,5,7,10,8,3. Fan the Hammer.
Parry 6 means 2 hits

23:10, Today: James Wilder rolled 7,5 using 2d6+1,2d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of 2,4,2,2. Damage - AP 1.
7 vs 5 is shaken

Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

Brett doesn't even have time to scream. The bullets tear into him. He staggers to the wall, then collapses, leaving a bloody smear as he goes down.

Amazingly, he's not dead. He looks up at Wilder, gasping and wheezing. "Y-you b-bastard...you b-b-b-bastard..." he moans.

((OOC: That's a Wound, which will take him out if he doesn't soak. He has a single chip available to him as a henchman, so he attempts to soak.

13:37, Today: Brett Bones rolled 2,1 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,1. Soak.

And that's a fail. Down he goes.

13:40, Today: Brett Bones rolled 8,10 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+2)8,(6+4)10. Incapacitation.

Amazingly, he's not actually dead yet. He's Incapacitated and injured, and a Finishing Move would take him out, but he's still clinging to life.))

Darius Carter is next, but I'll have to work on the post after I get off work.

Re: Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

Catherine Hays Cox:

OOC: In game terms, taking cover behind the wall of the Bella Union. And talking is a free action...

Carter laughs. "Oh, honey, the game is just now getting started!" he spins his fancy silver-plated pistol. To Katy's trained eye, it seems like the pistol sparks as it spins. "Like my new toy?" Carter grins. "Got it in Abilene from a fella callin' himself Tornado Tom. Ol' Tornado wasn't expecting to face someone on his own level. He called this baby The First Gun, like it was the archetype all lesser shootin' irons was made from. I don't know 'bout all that..." And then he grips the pistol and fires it at the wall Katy's hiding behind.

{{BOOM!}}

The gun strikes with the ungodly force of a cannon shell, blowing a hole three feet wide in the wall and shredding the board to splinters. And now Katy is totally exposed.

There's another deep, unnerving roar from deep within the house.

{{WROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOORRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!!!}}

"...but ya gotta admit," Carter continues to grin, "it sure packs a hell of a punch! Now, why don't you little ladies just go ahead and toss them shootin' irons away, before I'm force to blow holes the size o' Texas in yer guts?"

((OOC: Darius Carter has a +2 on Trait and Damage rolls thanks to his Adrenaline surge. He takes advantage of that by doing multiple actions without an MAP.

First, he spins his guns to activate deflection.

20:14, Today: Darius Carter rolled 4,1 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,1. Hexslinging. Success. Attacks against him are now at -2 for the next few rounds.

Then he takes a shot at Katy. More specifically, he takes a shot at the wall, intending to blow it away as a form of intimidation. He's using a Relic pistol, and he's not moving so he gains the benefit of his Marksman edge. He also has Improved Trademark Weapon, so he gets an additional +2 on top of it.

What he doesn't know is that he's not attacking an object...he's attacking The House itself.

20:24, Today: Darius Carter rolled 22,5 using d10+4,d6+4, rerolling max with rolls of (10+8)18,1. Shooting. Hit and lots o' Raises

20:25, Today: Darius Carter rolled 21 using 4d6+4, rerolling max with rolls of (6+1)7,5,4,1. Damage (with Raise).

The Bella Union has 20 (2 Heavy Armor) toughness. Carter's Relic pistol has AP 4 and is a Heavy Weapon. His attack actually makes the Bella Union Shaken. And like as not, the house's next target.

And now you guys know where to find a weapon you can effectively use against the house, if you can get it...

Carter's card: 10D))

Re: Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

The whores crouched on the balcony cling to each other and scream as insanity flies around them.

One of the drunkest miners is lying on the floor clutching his hat like it'll stop the sky falling on his head, one is clawing at the boarded window nearest him, and the other from that party just stands tilted at the bar, raising his now-empty glass like an automaton, eyes fixed on the centre of the chaos.

08:14, Today: Townsfolk rolled 2,1,3 using d6-1,d6-1,d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 3,2,4. unshake miners.

...they're still shaken.
