Re: Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))
"I do believe the time for subtly has passed." Mr. Sebastian says. He watches Hyram Burns heading up the stair. "Shadow! Sic him!"
The enrmous black hound bounds to its feet, howling and baying as it runs across the room, leaping over poker tables and roulette wheels as it heads for the stair.
Mr. Sebastian nods, then rushes over by Von Steinhof's side.
"Whatever your reason for seeking me out, sir, it would appear we have common enemies." he says as he holds out a hand to help Von Steinhof stand. "I can try to keep the mist contained and distract the gunmen, but I am no fighter. Hyram Burns is the anchor of the mist. If he dies, it will dissipate, never to return. If you can stop him, do so. I can get us out of here should it be necessary." He looks over at the hole and the wall and grimaces. "And keep that blasted Wells woman from gunning me down, would you kindly?"
With his other hand he makes an arcane gesture with his cane, and suddenly his shadow lengthens, growing impossibly long and wide against the light. Where it falls, whether on mist, man, or furniture, the color leeches away.
The blood-red mist convulses as the shadow sweeps over it, shrinking and contracting in what looks like pain. There's a chorus of shrieks from it, which do nothing to help the chaos in the room already.
Wild Bill also seems solidly struck by the shadow's passage, staggering as if punched while his arm turns ashen grey and his coat sleeve fades.
Carter, at the tail end of the shadow, doesn't even seem to have felt it, though he blinks rapidly as if his vision had gone slightly blurry all of a sudden.
((OOC: Roger has both himself and his Hound this turn.
He knows that Burns is the source of the Mourning Mist all around, but right now he's the only one who has the ability to do anything about it. And he can catch the mist, Darius Carter, and Wild Bill in a burst if he moves.
He sends his hound bounding after Hyram Burns, then moves near Von Steinhof to fire his Burst. His Hound only gets to the stairs (and only gets a 1 on the run die, so it doesn't go very far up them).
20:50, Today: Mr. Roger Sebastian Whateley rolled 7,1 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 7,1. Spellcasting. That's decent, but this is an Opposed roll against people that have a high Agility, so he spends his Red Chip to add more on to that.
20:50, Today: Mr. Roger Sebastian Whateley rolled 11 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+5)11. red chip.
Total of 18.
20:53, Today: Mourning Mist rolled 5,1 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,1. Agility.
20:53, Today: Wild Bill Hickok rolled 1,5 using d12,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,5. Agility.
20:52, Today: Darius Carter rolled 4,2 using d12,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,2. Agility.
not a single one of his targets gets anywhere near that, and he gets a Raise on all of them.
Damage Carter: 7. He's not even bothered.
Damage Wild Bill: 18. That will make him Shaken (and do nothing else, since this doesn't get around his Invulnerability)
Damage Mist: 13. This will cause a Wound to the Mourning Mist, which it will attempt to soak. It spends a White Chip.
20:58, Today: Mourning Mist rolled 11,7 using d12+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 9,5. Soak.
Yup, that soaks.
But as a consolation prize, all three suffer a -1 penalty on vision-based trait rolls on their next action, thanks to Sebastian's trappings.
This is pretty much par for the course. Mr. Sebastian is a good spellcaster, but combat magic is not his forte.
