Re: Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

Hyram Burns yelped as the gun went off, but it bounced off the hidden ghost steel plates sewn into his vest. It still hurt, but not enough to bother him overly much.

The bullet shot at Nicodemus sends him diving, but he gets winged. He scowls, but well, getting attention was working, wasn't it?

Carter laughed as Minty's bullet bounced off the armor plates growing out of his skin. "See ya' round, folks!"

Which was when Cyrus Tolliver, owner of the Bella Union, stood up and walked out into the middle of the floor. "CARTER!" He shouted, then looked over at Von Steinhof. "If you can get to it," he whispers, "there's a box of dynamite I had saved for a special occasion in the store room at the back." Then he turns his full attention toward the bandit.

"What do you want, old man?" Carter growled at Tolliver. If he could just make it up the stairs...the windows around the balcony didn't have boards on them. He could make it!

"You slack-jawed son of a bitch!" Tolliver shouted. "You know, I heard you were this big, bad gunfighter! But here you are trying to sneak away like a dog kicked in the the balls! You ain't got any sand in you, do you? You're just going to run on home to Bold Bill Doolin', get him to lick your wounds? I expected better of you! Guess your reputation ain't worth shit! And when I get out of here, everyone's gonna know it!"

Run. Carter thought. Run. Get out of here. Get out of here now! don't fall for it don't...fuck. Can't let that stand.

"You want a piece of me, old man?" Carter shouted back. "I'll carve you like a Christmas turkey!"

((OOC: Minty had a 6, so it was a hit even through his deflection. Not enough gun to pierce his armor, though.

Nic is Shaken by the hit.

Burns is wearing armor (magical armor, at that, so no AP) and has his Vigor boosted, so the shot, while solid, doesn't actually hurt him.

Cyrus Tolliver shouts some interesting information to anyone who is listening. He also Taunts Darius Carter, attempting to screw up his escape. Carter rolls Smarts to resist.

14:46, Today: Darius Carter rolled 2,2 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,2.  Resisting ToW.

He grabs a GM white chip to try and get better, as I got a Red thanks to the hardcase spend and he thinks if he gets high enough he can chance it.

14:46, Today: Darius Carter rolled 2,5 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,5.  white chip.

That is not high enough. Carter is called out and angerfied.

"One..." Lilly-Ann holds Flossie tight as several explosions and a roar rock the building, then all but throws the semi-hysterical blonde across the walk towards the room as soon as there's a lull.

"Two, three - git!"

Flossie takes a bit of dragging, then seems to get the idea and crawls like hell for that part-open door.

[[22:22, Today: Townsfolk rolled 5 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5.  unshake whore. Flossie unshakes! Both whores try to get as far towards a way out as possible.

22:21, Today: Townsfolk rolled 4 using 1d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 5.  principle soak for swimmy. Not quite enough, alas.

Re: Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

"Where is the store room?" Sebastian asks Tolliver.

"Down the hall, near the rear door. It's locked, though." Tolliver replies as he keeps an eye on Carter.

"Won't need one, my good man. Keep the Saloon's intellect occupied as long as you can. A distracted intellect is on that's not re-configuring the rooms around." Sebastian says. He looks at Von Steinhoff. "Well, this is where we part ways, I'm afraid. I'm going to set off the explosives. Get out of here while you can. Should I survive this, I shall have the files you wanted delivered to your room directly. If I should not...I wish you the best of luck finding them before the damage is done. Ta!"

And with that he dives underneath the roulette table, vanishing into the shadows.

Sebastian landed in darkness, ever so grateful to have calculated that correctly. He didn't fancy apparating halfway through an ironing board. With such thoughts to cheer him, he struck a match and began rooting around. The "store room" was a minor armory. There were a few rifles, a shotgun, some pistols on a rack, and ammo aplenty. Tolliver must have been planning some hostile takeovers and these were to be his tools of aggressive negotiation.

Well, whatever. The politics around saloon owners robbing each other at gunpoint didn't really matter to him. All he cared about was spotting...ah. There. TNT.

Now all he had to do was rig up an appropriately long fuse. And hope that the intellect of the saloon didn't notice him here, or these guns would fill him with an awful lot of holes.

"GRWOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWRL!" The shadowy hound bayed before it charged at Hyram Burns again, ripping and tearing at the scientist's trousers. There was a horrible *riiiiiiiiiiiiip!* as the trousers split, exposing Burn's boxers, socks, and garters to the world.

"Damnable mutt!" Burns charged at the hound. "Take that, damn you!" And with that he shoved with all his might. And the hound, taken completely by surprise, crashed through the wooden railing and sailed through the air, following the path of the exploded hardcase as it landed thorugh a table in a shower of wooden chips and railing debris.

Burns took a deep breath. "It is time to absquatulate, my dear." He said to the flaming figure of his...companion. "I fear Deadwood is played out and is now hostile territory."

"But Reginald...your pants..." Cynthia gasped.

"It's nothing you haven't seen before, my dear Penelope, and my dignity is not worth staying here a moment longer." he stormed to the nearest window. Freedom lay beyond it. Sweet, sweet freedom.

((OOC: Mr. Sebastian attempts to Teleport to the store room that holds the dynamite that Tolliver spoke of. He makes a Spellcasting roll first. Teleporting counts as movement, so he can take another action when he gets there.

16:07, Today: Mr. Roger Sebastian Whateley rolled 4,1 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,1.  Spellcasting. That's a success.

Now he needs to make a Smarts check at -4 to actually get there, as he's never been there before.

16:10, Today: Mr. Roger Sebastian Whateley rolled -1,4 using d10-4,d6-4, rerolling max with rolls of 3,(6+2)8.  Smarts.

His action is looking around the store room.

16:11, Today: Mr. Roger Sebastian Whateley rolled 3,5 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,5.  Notice.

Yup. He finds it. You have 4 rounds to get out of here.

Mr. Sebastian's Shadow goes attacking Burns again.

16:18, Today: Mr. Sebastian's Shadow rolled 14,4 using d8+2,d8+2, rerolling max with rolls of (8+4)12,2.  Fighting (Frenzy, Wild Attack). Hit and Raise

Damage: 16. That's 1 Wound for Burns, who attempts to soak with his last personal chip.

16:21, Today: Hyram Burns rolled 4,2 using d10-1,d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of 5,3.  Soak.

He soaks. Padded sumo combat strikes again!

Mr. Sebastian's card: JH

Hyram Burns goes.

Well, he knows he's in trouble. He is not armed and is barely fending things off, so as a desperation ploy he tries to Push the hound off the balcony.

16:26, Today: Hyram Burns rolled 15,1 using d6-1,d6-1, rerolling max with rolls of (6+6+4)16,2.  Strength (Push).

16:27, Today: Mr. Sebastian's Shadow rolled 4 using 1d8, rerolling max with rolls of 4.  Opposed Strength.

Well, then. Success and Raise for Burns, who has proven to be remarkably resilient this fight.

Burns uses his movement to get to a window. He doesn't have the actions to open it, though.

Hyram's Card: KD))

At long last, James Wilder is up! And he's got a pretty clear shot at Darius Carter, who is currenlty Shaken from Tolliver's Test of Wills

((OOC: No, those are all misses because Carter has deflection active still. Unless you want to use your blue chip to add to that 5 (currently a 3 because of Cater's spell, but you'll automatically make it a hit and might even get a raise).

Edit: actually, Logan was asking me how Aiming applied to Gatling weapons (they apply to all the shots). Since James has Marksman, he can Aim so long as he doesn't move. That would cancel out the bonus Carter gets from deflection, which means you'd have 3 hits))

Re: Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

((OOC: According to the official boards (http://www.pegforum.com/viewto...hilit=aiming#p384102):

quote:
If the character spends a full round doing nothing but aiming both weapons at a single target, he could (on his next action) fire all 6 shots at that target with the +2 bonus... don't be surprised however if that target gets an action before the attack that they use it to dive behind cover and/or move farther out of range.

So Aiming (and, by extension, Marksman) no longer cares about Rate of Fire, as long as you're attacking a single target.

I thought James had Marksman. Sorry. You going to try to chip that roll at all to get one hit in? Or did you want to change your action in light of this new information?))

OOC: The Marksman Edge is not quite the same as the Aim maneuver, because it does says specifically that it requires RoF 1, but if you want to rule that it applies ... okay :)
SWD pg 36:
Marksman
Requirements:
Seasoned
The hero excels at taking controlled, measured shots. If he does not move in a turn, he may fire as if he took the Aim maneuver. Marksman may never be used with a Rate of Fire
greater than 1.

Marksman works with both Shooting and Throwing.

OOC:

To Wilder's point, I think he's referring to the restriction on Marksman that it can't apply to weapons with ROF > 1, unless there's some secret errata or House Rule to the contrary.

((OOC: Ah. If that's a restriction specific to Marksman, then it applies. But that still means you can Aim for an action and get the bonus with multiple shots. Carter's been goaded into not running away by Tolliver, so he's not quite going to be out of the Bella Union yet. His deflection spell will end next round unless he maintains it, and he's almost out of Power Points as it is.))

Re: Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

Wilder empties his hogleg at Carter, but the bullets strike around him, outlining him perfectly. That was a new trick for him. Wilder was also pretty certain that Carter hadn't been growing steel plates out of his chest before. Clearly, Carter had made some sort of deal with the devil.

"So. The dogged bounty hunter catches up with me at last. And you brought along the Ranger lady who failed to keep me locked up in the first place!" Carter says as he looks at James. "You've taken down my men one by one, only to completely fuck it up at the last moment. I think that's the worst thing I ever done heard." He grins. "How wonderful."

((OOC: Alrighty, so barring James taking a different action or using chips, all those shots are misses thanks to Carter's spell. Moving on to the next round.))

Can't post a round map right now...photobucket is doing maintenance. Watch this space, because I'll put up the updated map when I get access to my account again.

Round TL;DR
Zeke takes a swing at Mr. Sebastian, who is able to soak. Von Steinhof warns Zeke off with a gun to the head.
Nicodemus Whateley tosses a load of magic at Wilder out of spite for being shot at.
Wild Bill realizes he's in Deadwood, though he's still a bit dazed by everything.
Jackie Wells and Katy Cox take shots at Darius Carter, though his magic protects him. Katy strikes up a conversation with Whippoorwill Whateley
Logan West attempts to diffuse the situation, and winds up reconnecting with an old friend. However, when Katy let's slip she's a ranger, the Whippoorwill turns on her.
Upstairs, Cynthia Burns attempts to set Mr. Sebastian's Shadow and the Bella Union on fire. The Bella Union responds by ripping open Hyram Burns' satchel of dynamite and then flinging explosives at damn near everyone! Due to spectacularly poor aim and the quick reflexes of the Posse, no one winds up seriously hurt (except a couple of Townsfolk and one of the Hardcases)
However, this does leave Zeke free of guns being pointed at him.
Maddox chains up Brett Bones and heads back to the action.
Darius Carter takes the opportunity to run, but is called out by Cyrus Tolliver, who reveals there are high explosives stashed in the Bella Union's store room. Mr. Sebastian takes the opportunity to shadow walk to the store room and starts setting up for a big boom.
Flossie and Lilly-Ann run deeper into the saloon, unaware that explosives are going to be set off soon...
Hyram Burns shoves Mr. Sebastian's hound off the balcony, losing his pants in the process. He contemplates freedom.
James Wilder takes some shots at Carter, which are deflected by his magic.

Zek growled as he saw Sebastian vanish. However, he could comfort himself with a much bigger fish-Nicodemus himself. Assuming the law was not hellbound to kiss his murder's hindquarters as well. He heads for the stairs, seeing how the Mage was busy shooting back and forth between someone else who wanted him dead. It meant he was not watching what Zek was doing, and he had a chance to get close before that loathsome maggot escaped again...

(OOC-Doing all out move up the stairs to get to Nicodemus.

Re: Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

"Cowards and ingrates." Cynthia snarls. "We'd do best to leave them all behind."

Hyram Burns nods. "After you, my dear."

The flame suit didn't increase power overly much, but heat hat the property of greatly weakening glass. Cynthia took a step back, balles up a fist, and *SMASH!*

The window fell into a hundred glittering shards, and the mad scientist hopped through the frame and off the balcony, coming to a perfectly poised landing on the far side of the barricades surrounding this section of the street.

Hyram took a step forward...but a large shard of glass sprang up from the fallen remnants, slashing him across the throat!

"ARGH!" he gurgled, clutching his throat as blood leaked from his fingertips.

Blood also began to drip from the wall above the window frame, forming a message writ large for all to see.

a̱̣̭̕N̤̥̹ḑ ͈̙̲̼̫͓ͅw̭̻ͅH҉̞̮̩e̶̫̰̲̦̜r̹̲̪̱̕E̢̩̰̳̻̘̲ ͍̹̱̙̟̝D͏̹͈̘̙͖̝o͉̖̲͖̝͚ ̶̙͓̲̪̫ͅy̖O҉u̴̙ͅ ͍̮͞t̰͎Ḩ͍i̼̙͢n̡̘͇̲̹̩͉K͖̳̝̠͈̜ Y̧͕̤͙̼̘̺O̸̜̰̭̯U̬'̗̝̦̦͖̀R̳̦̦̖̲̠̫͟E͈͕̣̺͢ ̫g͇̥̲̩̪̦O̻͚͔͡í͔̺N̹̬͍̟g͡ͅ?̖̱͎̥

"You...damn...thing..." Burns gurgled, but he shrieked when a sharpened piece of the banister he'd kicked the shadow hound through rose up and slammed into his back.

Hyram Burns turned, staggered toward the railing, and clutched it firmly as he looked over the assembled crowd in disbelief.

"I...I..." he gasped. "everything...I...ever...did...was...for science..."

And then a spear of solid oak ripped through the floorboards, up through the balcony, and up though Hyram Burn's asshole.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHGHGghg...~*"

Hyram Burns flopped against the wooden spear that had impaled him from end to end. He grasped vainly at the edge of the stake, which had broken his jaw as it pierced his mouth. Then he gave up the ghost and fell limp, the stake holding him upright.

"NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!" Cynthia screamed.

Maddox staggered against the door frame and promptly threw up.

Wild Bill stared at the impaled man. "Reckon this ain't my rodeo." he said, going transparent. "Not my rodeo, not my horses. Good day to ya'll. Git out while you can."

So saying he walked straight through the wall, through Katy Cox, and continued on, ignoring everyone else.

And it was at this point that another pair of sharpened boards, blown out by the explosions, slammed into Cyrus Tolliver's back as well...

((OOC: With Cynthia Burns and the Bella Union sharing an initiative card, I need to see which of them goes first.

First, though, the Bella Union needs to Unshake.

13:43, Today: Bella Union Saloon rolled 1,4 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,4.  Opposed Agility.

seems like Cynthia gets her action first. She's going to smash the window and attempt to get outside.

13:44, Today: Cynthia Burns rolled 5,4 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,4.  Fighting.

Hit. She has to contend with the window's Armor, however. The window has a toughness of 8 currently.

Damage: 14. Well, that'll do it. She moves out of the window, dropping outside the Bella Union

13:48, Today: Cynthia Burns rolled 2,25 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,(6+6+6+6+1)25.  Agility not to faceplant. Yeeeup. Success and Raise.

She finishes her movement outside the Saloon.

The Bella Union is pissssssssed. It fails to Notice Mr. Sebastian, so it takes it's ire out on Hyram Burns and Cyrus Tolliver, sending three attacks at Hyram and 2 at Tolliver. It's using sharp pieces of wood from the broken tables and the hole in the wall.

Attacks vs. Hyram: 13:54, Today: Bella Union Saloon rolled 7,9,8,5 using d10,d10,d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 7,9,8,5.  Throwing a hissy fit. ouch. 3 Hits and 2 Raises

Damage 1: 16. That's a Wound for Burns
Damage 2: 22. That's 3 Wounds for Burns
Damage 3: 51 (!). Um...that's 10 fucking wounds for Burns.

You know what? Not even going to try to soak that. Hyram Burns is dead.

Also, the gory death is going to force a Fear Check vs. Nausea (-5 Fear level, +Grit)

Attacks vs. Tolliver: 14:01, Today: Bella Union Saloon rolled 9,3,4 using d10,d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 9,3,4.  Throwing. 2 hits, 1 Raise.

Damage 1: 19. That's 3 Wounds for Tolliver to soak
Damage 2: 19. That's another 3 Wounds for Tolliver to soak.

NPC fear checks:
Wild Bill (he's not immune to Fear while the manitou isn't in control): 14:12, Today: Wild Bill Hickok rolled 3,7 using d8+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 1,5.  Fear! Success.
Cynthia Burns: 14:14, Today: Cynthia Burns rolled 4,2 using d6-3,d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of (6+1)7,5.  Fear! Success. She's pissed because Hyram got ganked, but not afraid per se.
Darius Carter: 14:16, Today: Darius Carter rolled 3,4 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,4.  Fear!
Maddox: 14:18, Today: Maddox rolled 2,0 using d8-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 4,2.  Fear! Fail. Maddox will you stop sucking!? He's Shaken and needs to make a Vigor roll to avoid Fatigue.
14:20, Today: Maddox rolled 3,4 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,4.  Vigor. Well he doesn't lose his lunch I guess.
Nicodemus Whateley: 14:21, Today: Nicodemus Whateley rolled 6,4 using d6+1,d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of 5,3.  Fear! Because of course he's not afraid.

None of the other major NPCs see the gruesome death.

Wild Bill tries to Unshake.

14:23, Today: Wild Bill Hickok rolled 8,11 using d8+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 6,(6+3)9.  Unshake. About bloody time.

But Wild Bill has a score to settle, and this shit don't concern him, so he Ghosts (spending a White Chip to pass the Spirit roll) and walks out of here to peruse his own vendetta.

Wild Bill's Card: QH. He's probably out of this fight for good, unless someone wants to argue with him.))

She fired, realizing it was quite dangerous with Ranger Cox right there, but it was also dangerous to let the freaky deader keep shooting Ranger Cox, so there wasn't a lot of choice here.

So, unloading, cuz I will reroll 1s with chips anyway.

18:19, Today: Jackie Wells rolled 8,6,2,5 using d10,d10,d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 8,6,2,5.  pew pew.

I'm assuming Jackie isn't in melee with Tzipporah?  It only matters because that first hit is not a Raise against her Parry.

13 or 18 damage, 8 damage, 9 damage

18:23, Today: Jackie Wells rolled 13,5,8,9 using 2d6,d6,2d6,2d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,(6+2)8,5,3,5,(6+1)7,2.  Damage1, Raise1, Damage2, Damage3.

The dead girl takes all the hits and vanishes in a puff of greasy black smoke that is quickly gone. Wild Bill, at that moment passing by, growled at her. "Watch it."

Meanwhile, Cyrus Tolliver lays on the floor, empty eyes staring at nothing, a pair of wooden stakes smashed through his spine. But then, he twitches, and closes his eyes. Amazingly, he's still alive, though he'd need medical attention to stay that way.

((OOC: That's well more than enough damage to send her back to the netherworld.

Meanwhile, Cyrus Tolliver doesn't get anywhere close to a good Incapcitation roll and is Bleeding Out. he attempts a Vigor roll as a last ditch effort to stay alive...

16:34, Today: The Stray, on behalf of Cyrus Tolliver, rolled 1,0 using d6-3,d6-3, rerolling max with rolls of 4,3.  Vigor. Well, that's in the ball park of possible with a Red Chip.

16:34, Today: The Stray, on behalf of Cyrus Tolliver, rolled 11 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+5)11.  red chip. aaaand that's a Success and Raise, which means he stabilizes, though he has 3 wounds and is Incapacitated.))

The leader of the thugs swears under her breath. "A'right, new plan: there's no way out up here without the spike salad treatment and the boss is down, so we stick the hell together, get downstairs, raid the till, raid the bar, out that hole in the wall. Plug any and all fucken wizards you see on the way."

"Arne! Grab Bill and pull him away. Daisy, do that later, ya freak. Concentrate, dammit."

The thugs bunch together as best they can, Bill half-dragged in the rear.

[[The Hardcases don't know Tolliver's alive, but they can see the nearest exit's compromised and decide to try and escape this hell in a bunch with whatever they can carry. I chip Arne to unshake, making his 5 there a 3:

08:48, Today: Townsfolk rolled rolls of 53,2,5,5.  hustle!

((OOC: Wow. That's just not cool. Bad die roller! Though I don't know why you didn't just spend a Red for a d6 add. That would have made that first roll a success.))

Re: Chapter 5.4: Shootout at the Bella Union Saloon ((Deadwood))

The shadow hound rises from the shattered table and looks up at the impaled Dr. Burns. It whuffs, and then crawls into the shadows beneath a Faro table, vanishing from sight.

Mr. Sebastian contemplated his options. There was more dynamite here than would be effective if set off all at once. He'd have to space them out some. He began bundling the sticks together. Half set up in one corner of the store room, then half in the other. That should provide a cascading explosion that would do the job necessary. Perhaps it would even cook off the ammunition in the store room and cause even more harm to the building's structure.

He picked up the first bundle, and set it precisely where he felt it would do the most damage. Then he did the same with his next bundle. Then he began measuring out fuses. There was a plunger box he could use which would come in handy.

((OOC: Mr. Sebastian is basically involved in a Dramatic Task. He needs to acquire 5 total successes on various Smarts checks to set this up properly.

Mr. Sebastian spends his action figuring out how he's going to set this up. The max he can use in a single blast is 15 sticks. The crate he's contemplating contains 24 sticks.

He decides to set up 2 12-stick blasts (4d6+10 damage in a MBT, HW) as that will give him the most bang for his buck. His plan is to set them up in such a way that the blast from one will trigger the other. This would be a Knowledge (Demolitions) check, but he has to default to a Common Knowledge Check (-2) to set the charge right.

08:36, Today: Mr. Roger Sebastian Whateley rolled 1,-1 using d10-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 3,1.  Common Knowledge. Nowhere near enough, so he spends a GM white chip for a reroll

08:37, Today: Mr. Roger Sebastian Whateley rolled 15,3 using d10-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of (10+7)17,5.  white chip.

Ooo, that's quite a good roll. He spends a GM red chip to add to that.

08:38, Today: Mr. Roger Sebastian Whateley rolled 3 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3.  red chip.

That's a total of 18, which is 4 successes. he only needs one more success to set all this up and finish the Dramatic Task early.

He also (though his hound) knows that Burns is dead, so he dismisses the hound as a Free action.

Mr. Sebastian's card: 2S))
