Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

quote:
There is the father coming,
There is the father coming.
The father says this as he comes,
The father says this as he comes,
“You shall live,” he says as he comes,
“You shall live,” he says as he comes.

-- "A’te he’ u-we" (translated), one of the songs sung during the Sioux Ghost Dance

September 16th, 1880. Evening, Night, and Morning of the 17th. The Main Camp around Bear Butte.

some mood music

The rest of the day is a blur for Rabbit. About a dozen of the Iron Dragon rail enforcers return with her to the camp, following her lead, eager to see this power that can stop bullets. The camp is abuzz with activity. The women prepare pemmican from Tatanka's holy meat, make shirts of cotton and leather festooned with stars, crescent moons, and birds, while knots of people form around Wovoka, Horn Chips, Kicking Bear, Eagles Floating On Gentle Breezes, and Screaming Rabbit herself. There is no real communication, but it seems as if Rabbit has been given the task of preparing the Chinese rail workers, the women, and the young, training them in the steps.

The preparations are followed by an enormous feast. The entire contingent of Oglala and Minniconju on the mountainside gather around a roaring fire, sing praises to the spirits, and partake of the food. The Chinese contingent cling closely to Rabbit, clearly a little uncomfortable by being surrounded with so many unfamiliar faces.

At the fringes of the feast, The Hooded One watches. He makes no move to join in, speaks no words to curse the gathering, he just stands, glaring at the assembled, his face hidden in the shadows of his robe. None approach him, save one: Sitting Bull, the Hunkpapa Wicasa.

Every Lakota present seems to recognize him, and points him out to Rabbit. Sitting Bull, too, is quiet as he watches the proceedings, but his frown speaks volumes anyway. The two watch in silence for quite a while.

In the Hunting Grounds

some mood music

It has been some time since Thunder Walker died, and was saved by Moses from the town of his nightmares. Time is difficult to gauge here, in the dream-like lands beyond the night sky. Thunder Walker has spent the time in the den of Laughs At Darkness, the puzzling shaman in the coyote skin. The two train as they wait for the call of the Ghost Dance. Laughs At Darkness is a trying master, demanding and more than a little free with that stick of his, but Thunder Walker has seen much in his time here.

"The time draws near." The shaman says one day, out of the blue. "Are you willing to return to the land of the living?"

Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

Rabbit does her best to introduce her uncertain gaggle of Chinese thugs to others present, particularly those that have English as a common language. Explaining how the feast came about, she indicates her markings and encourages them to share respectfully in the flesh of one who could restore the near-dead to great health with his blood and mighty yang energies.

After the second time Sitting Bull is pointed out to Rabbit, still standing on the fringes, the small shamen extricates herself from her entourage, humbly borrows a bark tray from one of Crazy Horse's men and makes sure there is a portion of the best roasted meat for Sitting Bull. Making sure he can see it was only touched by the carving-man, she takes it over, going to one knee a little way from the chieftain to show maximum respect (and be out of kicking range while holding the sacred flesh) as she offers it.

"Hau, [Language unknown: enprpa Overomyin Himen,"] she addresses him. [Language unknown: "Virkorman toch alekil hited wileauill er Menentund Iveingmen, sean haturesta n eneen anllek. Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

Gazes At Stars has had a stressful few days, what with the Ravenite attacks here, in the heart of the holy mountain itself. It wasn't comfortable, being surrounded by his traditional enemies the Lakota, but thus far no one had hassled him too much. Still, he's more comfortable on the fringes of the gathering...which puts him in a good position to watch the exchange between Screaming Rabbit, Sitting Bull, and The Hooded One...

Sitting Bull raises an eyebrow at this. [Language unknown: "Utprch."] He grunts. [Language unknown: "Atus les."]

Rabbit bows and goes to do as she suggested, asking a couple of youths she's pretty certain are virgins to fetch food for the chieftain from a visible distance away.

Seeing as everyone else of importance has a share, she offers the bark tray of best meat to the random stargazer she caught sight of in returning to the gathering, standing a little out of grab range though her stance is calm. [Language unknown: "Ntro ofof? N as ughhi, anyichwas."]

Gazes at Stars blanches for a moment, then smiles apologetically.

"Screaming Rabbit. I hear your talk with Sitting Bull of the Lakota. You are a good omen. You are friends with Thunderbird and bring the Ghost Dance to your people who would not hear Wovoka. You withstand abuse from the Hooded One. And you manage not to kick Sitting Bull in his stubborn Lakota face," the Shoshone repeated, "I think that is all I said. I am Gazes at Stars. Have you eaten yet?"

Rabbit tilts her head a little, not recognising the accent. The comment about Sitting Bull brings a small smile she can't quite suppress to the corner of her mouth.

"I hope it," she says of omens, then looks back a moment towards the fire and those that feast there.

"Be welcome, Gazes At Stars. Ah...only two bites," Rabbit says, rubbing her upper arm absently. "I know I should eat, but it hard to be hungry."

The small shamen tenses, suddenly very wary of the other's movements and ready to bolt should he move towards her, watching his hands on the cloak.

"I...thank Dogwa, and hope to deserve such reputation," she says, swallowing. "Gazes At Stars need not tl- trouble himself for this one. You all right out here? Wovoka not mind to talk to foreigner - any kind, he talk to all of them."

Then, because her curiousity was frequently ahead of her tact: "Are you from the north? I don' recognise your accent at all."

Gazes, sadly oblivious to Rabbit's discomfort, burst out laughing.

"Perhaps I spent too long communing since we entered the Sioux lands. They make me uncomfortable, but Wovoka knows the will of the spirits well. I am sorry we have not met before. I often bed away from the camp, for my dreams are restless and I speak to spirits even in my sleep," he said cryptically before explaining, "I am of the Newe, what the white men call Shoshone. I am a Ghost Dancer. I traveled with Wovoka from Paiute lands when the White calf was born. I was there when the H- When Raven attacked and you called the Thunderbird."

The fire popped, and for a long second Gazes watched an errant ember float through the air. It blew toward the pair, and Gazes at Stars smiled when the ashen flake landed in the dirt by their feet.

"The omens were not good, the signs unclear. But now... they are better," he said, turning back to Rabbit, "I apologize for not acting sooner. I am eager to Dance for the new world. I only hope we can keep the ravens at bay. They are...numerous."

As the flake of ash blows softly away, Rabbit sets the tray down and examines the back of her hands a moment before folding her arms. "I hope they less numerous soon...I have plan for that, but I don' know if it wir work."

Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

Mention of Thunder Walker's name was a reassurance, even if Rabbit had not seen when this man rejoined Laughing Calf's party. Having the not entirely unmerited local distrust of Chinese people expressed to her for the second time that day brings a faint bemused smile to Rabbit's lips.

"The warlord Kang..." Rabbit hesitates a moment, then starts from the beginning. "His name, it not 'snake', like small poisonous animal that hide most of the time, then bite if you tread on him. It 'dragon'. That mean, ah...water-panther. Very big, powerful spirit animal."

Rabbit crouches and finds a bare spot of earth to draw a dragon on with a pebble, privately noting to try and hoard some of Tatanka's dried flesh or pemmican for the Yuan's next visit. She sketches out coils, taloned feet, the tasselled flag of a tail and mighty antlered head, sharp ears, fierce eyes and long whiskers. "Iron Dragon. If you tread on him, you not know it until he bite you in half, because he is so big, you think you are on the ground. So. It is well not to trust him, because he do what he want...but if we can show him he want this, the Nations strong, the millennium-cycle to start better...you see how it is well to have the dragon with us."

She brushes her slim fingers under the dragon-sketch, leaving tiny waves in the soil. "-and Lord Kang, he very good at treaties, with the American langrige. If we only drive out the white man, not make clear show of strength-without-the-gun and offer him to join us, the white man just sit outside and make big siege - kill off Tatanka's herds, all that. They try it already. Lord Kang's understanding, his raiload working harmoniousry with spirits, not against...these great advantages to make a peace that not stop where borders are now, not stop after only thirty, fifty years."

"...but it not easy, to convince an iron heart like that."

Stars looks between the dragon in the dirt and Rabbit. Slowly, he draws his coup stick and puts the handle end in the dirt.

"Your plan, your ideas, sound good. I have heard of the water-panther, the great cat. What I do not know,"
at this he began drawing the sharp angles of great wings, the hook of a beak, "Is when the Iron Dragon has written treaties with the Great Fathers, when the dragon must share the new year with the Thunderbird," he drew a rough snarling face, "with the Coyote", and then a snake, "And the Newe and Paiute..." He stood back, "Will he stand with the spirits, or use the iron rivers to divide them? I have not seen a harmony of the spirits in the Iron Dragon. But as I say before. I am Newe, Shoshone. I find it hard to truly sympathize with the nation of the Sioux. But I believe..." he paused, faltering, "I trust Wovoka. His Ghost Dance should come to pass."

A little wary of the stick, Rabbit watches the spirit-shapes appear from the earth, then looks up at the foreign shaman. "I do not believe he would have reason to put discord among the peoples," she says, puzzled, then looks down at the drawings again.

"It was like this in China, two millennium-cycles ago. We don' lose who we are - my father was Miao, my mother Han like most the Chinaman you see here - for being together, calling the land one thing, and that we come from it...it can work, for it has work, many thousand years. With iron roads we can extend a hand to our brother, to our sister far out the West, end the Way of the Gun there also. Do you see?"

The Shoshone is quiet for a long moment.

"I think so, Screaming Rabbit. In the name of fairness, I must confess I do not follow the old ways, and the way of the gun, I think, is not so much the problem. It is the way of greedy, angry men, red and white and yellow. But I follow the Way of the Brave for a long time, went on the warpath many times. Perhaps I am too untrusting. There is a reason the Great Spirit spoke to Wovoka and not Gazes at Stars, after all," he admitted with a self-deprecating grin.

Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

Rabbit looks straight at Gazes At Stars. Her voice is low, controlled and resonant as the steady beat of the soft of a clenched fist against steel.

"It is the problem. You were a warrior long before; you already have the art, think it light to take up one weapon or another weapon...but for those that come after you, see this easy thing, this easy killing of their brother with no way to halt the blow, no need for much training, it get in their thinking. That is Raven's Path."

She stands, digging her nails into her palms to hide the tremor in her fists. "What world it make, where it so easy to kill that it sound stupid not to murder? When to be attacked is to be blamed for not shoot first? That path go off into darkness...to place where there is no end to the madness, the fear that makes the hatred."

Rabbit shakes her head, her entire body tense. "The Raven shaman I fought...he so powerful he pull up the dead like grass, and still I get blood of him. Being the strongest not make him safe, but he still think to get stronger, to be like stronger one that hurt him, long time ago...and so heap up land and men and food with greed to show it."

"It fear, under anger, under greed...and the weapon of fear is the one made for kill human being onry and in great number, the one that Buffalo has no part in, the one idiot child could use."
Rabbit swallows, looks away, breathes.

"I not blame you not to trust all the foreigner,"
she says quietly. "You have reason for that. -but I trust better one I see is ally, than one who say it."

Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

Gazes is taken aback, stepping backwards with a confused look when Rabbit accuses him of contributing to the fear of the world, to setting his enemies on Raven's Path. For a split second he attempts to speak, but quiets quickly when he realizes the truth in her words.

He listens to her words, searching look still on his face, and when she has finished, he nods deeply, looking at the ground. He speaks quietly, ashamed that Rabbit has inadvertently seen so deep and true into his heart.

"You and your words are great wisdom, Screaming Rabbit. Fear is truly the greatest weapon of the manitou, one they have forged and handed to men and women to use. I have...wielded this weapon in the past, and I suppose I have not truly set it down. The ways of peace and isolation are not easy for me, and alliance with the white tribes, or the Green Sn- Iron Dragon, is hard as well. I have seen the necessity of Wovoka's ways, so I have followed, but the world is a bloody place, full of shadows and evil. There is a fear of the Ravens in my heart, and it has guided me."

He neglected to specify the manner of his fear, opting instead to return his coup stick to his belt and mutter prayers to the spirits around for strength and insight.

Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

Rabbit cants her head, watching him aslant like a chary horse for some moments before speaking. "It is not isolated, to be with us...we will clasp forearms with many. Meet many. Make a place that is free of spilled blood and wickedness, if none exist in the world before...that pain was made by people, too. It can be healed, though it take much working. Believe this."

Rabbit looks up at the stars, clean and unbloodied and cold as they are. "You ar right, that to be guided, ruled by fear is like poison, harm you and others there...but do not be ashamed to feel. That say only that you have want to stay alive. Or, the fear of yourself, that you have desire to live better than your past, make better world than those who are slave to fear."

Still very much tensed, Rabbit paces forward to offer a hand in a gesture of peace - and, perhaps, proof that she is human and here in this moment as he is. "I feel this also. But it not rule me."

We are always ready to do things asked of us, if it is the will of the spirits, but do not ignore your own will. Ignore your own desire and it will take hold of you, and you will resent its absence."

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

Rabbit's grip is perhaps surprisingly soft, a relic of not having lived an adult life until this fortnight past. It is also firm, despite the slight tremor there.

She holds a moment, a point of warm contact, then gently pulls Gazes over towards the fire and those she knows will accept his presence. "Come, eat. Tomorrow, maybe, we Dance."

In reply to Laughs At Darkness (msg # 26):

Thunder Walker smiled placidly. He had come to expect a near constant level of ridicule from the shaman, accusations of stupidity the most frequent among them. This time, he was most surprised that the strange character didn't strike him with his stick. In any case, he had learned not to enter discussions with the man about the strange differences between small words. The shaman had asked if he was willing to go, and he had replied that he was ready.

Of course, to be ready to go, one must necessarily be willing. But he knew that attempting to argue the point would only bring some manner of nonsense, perhaps a strike with the stick. Besides that, he had learned much wisdom from this man, however peculiar his preference for exact language was. He did not wish to upset the shaman.

"I am then willing to return."

In reply to Thunder Walker (msg # 29):

"Ha! Finally, a smart answer!" Laughs At Darkness chortles...then stops abruptly. The coyote ears on the skin he wears perk up, and he turns to look at the entrance of the den.

Thunder Walker can hear something. A terrible pounding that rattles the den's wall.

"Trouble." The shaman says, in a serious tone Thunder Walker hadn't heard much before now. "The drums of War. I hear Raven's laughter. Something terrible is being called. Come." He stands and heads over to the burrow's entrance. "And I hear, as it were, the voice of thunder. 'Come and see,' it says. We shall see."

As the night's festivities die down, Rabbit and Gazes wander off to sleep. And in their sleep, they dream...

As when a scout, certain signs and signals caused him to naturally enter a state of high alert. At the shaman's change of tone and demeanor, Thunder Walker felt just such a calling. He followed the coyote shaman's gaze to the entrance, and then wordlessly followed at the man's beckoning.

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

It had naturally taken Rabbit somewhat longer than usual to extricate herself from company, and even longer to be wholly certain no living soul saw her carefully climb down an almost sheer slope to nest amongst long-fallen boulders. Screened from above by the branches of a young pine that had determined to grow there, Rabbit nestled in as best she could, coccooned in the blanket Sky Hawk had kindly retrieved from Horn Chips' tent.

She would probably wake sore from shivering, Rabbit reflected, looking at the stars and tucking her nose under the edge of the wool. She could cope with soreness. Turning on her side to favour the almost-vanished injury inflicted by Huang Li, Rabbit slept.

The scent of this place set her heart pounding. Lost to her waking self, for whom the memory had healed to an ugly textured patch of shadow-figures and touch, in the dream Rabbit could barely breathe. Panic flared in her, mercilessly evoked by the warm smells of a south Pacific spring, ship's tar, laundry starch, this one house.

Rabbit drew her naked body into a compactness, holding to her own warmth as her mind fought the past. Her hair veiled her shoulders and laid soft against her back, long as it had ever been.

If I look back I will see the stain from my blood. Rabbit knew this with dream certainty, trembling from the horror of its presence.

I will not look back.

Rabbit stood, shakily, to go in search of clothes. No sound came save the wind and gulls and distant street. Rabbit struggled with nausea, although it was bright morning, not the evening they'd brought a little girl here. The blood was still there.

I can walk out of here.

She did, though the first two steps were like fighting against current, almost stumbling, her chest a tight cage of fear. The corridor was unfamiliar, or every cheapside hotel anywhere; Rabbit paced quickly down, arms crossed over her chest, alert and ready to run. She crossed a courtyard where blossoms tried to create snow out of season, her path softened by fallen blooms. The next room proved to be baths as empty as the rest of the place, big, hot and deep.

Hoping to pass herself off as a patron, Rabbit slipped into the larger pool, swam about a bit and washed, belatedly noticing her markings had become like gold in her skin. She was preparing for something now, she thought, becoming clean for a journey.

A soft tread on the boards  stiffened her spine as she sat on the edge of the rinse bath: she dropped into the cold and waited there, crouched up to her neck as an armed tough walked over fully clothed, decorously turned his attention to the wall, and asked politely if she needed anything.

"Please fetch my clothes," Rabbit asked, wary but unafraid of the man who did not look at her. He bowed slightly and went off. She managed to find a towel and some underthings before he reappeared again, with apologies and what clothes he could find, all unclaimed though he was ignorant as to what she came in with.

Rabbit knelt and looked through them, picking up a silk robe with astonishment at its kingfisher shimmer. The deaths of ten thousand moths laid light as water there, and rich embroidery that would surely turn the worker blind with its heartaching detail flashed on the sleeves...Rabbit dropped it as though it burned at a flash of Imperial Yellow trim, recognising the garment of a high concubine.

"This was abandoned? It should be cut up for prayer flags," she instructed the nameless man. "I will take them with me."

There were jeans - Rabbit thought it would be fun to try jeans, but they were too big for her, as was the foreign military coat. She hesitated over an old-fashioned leather breastplate, but did not think she should be going dressed for war to wherever she was due, such armour tending to bring war with it. At last she found a pale doeskin shirt with simple stars and a rough thunderbird on the chest, and leggings she recognised.

"These are my clothes," she told the enforcer, who was making remarkably swift work of prayer flags, and went out in the garden to change. Rabbit made a sash of the hem of an Iron Dragon shirt, and tied back her hair with bands of the same at her nape and across her forehead. The tough man brought her the flags, a reed mat and "five bowls of rice" that were actually just her one new bowl, brimful, though she knew he spoke the truth. He had companions in the bathouse now, all in various states of dress and staring curiously after her.

Rabbit bowed to them, called her razor to her hand as naturally as thinking, and hung it on her belt. She crossed the cool, green garden to the edge of the forest, balanced her goods in one arm, and began climbing carefully down the slope of a rough shaft, into the earth.

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

Gazes At Stars, much like Rabbit, found himself at the edges of the camp. His tentpoles were arranged so that he could look up at the sky, and as he drifted off, half-sitting against his pack, he muttered a few goodnights to Dogwa and the many spirits that frequented Bear Butte.

Gazes ran, naked, through the dark and twisted corridors of bark and leaves. His deft footsteps made good time through the claustrophobic branches, but even still, his pursuers were at his heels, as they always were. Their chittering laughter, like stone on the rough hairs of a boar, or the grinding of a salt rattler's maw, consumed all other sound, even the shrieks of terror that constantly ripped from Gazes bloody throat.

He turned and pushed open the flap. He ducked inside the lodge, and straightened his cloak, hoping he looked presentable. The war leader was not a patient man at the best of times, and when the Shoshone went on the warpath, he had even less time for personal desires. Gazes gulped, and stepped through the thick smoke that filled the room. In the air around him, bright figures whirled through the smoke. Sky-blue spiders skittered across the smoke swirls while a fiery coyote and a sea-green fox whirled through the air locked in bloodless combat.

He had to stop every few seconds to greet these sacred spirits, and his anxiety grew with each halted step. A laugh, chittering like stone on bristles, sounded behind him, and he felt like he should know it, but instead he just stepped through the lodge toward the low coals, glowing orange at the far end.

The coals steamed and the smoke parted. Before him sat a man who was at once a wrinkled shoshone warrior bedecked in rattler skins and a massive corvid, his black feathers drifting around him.

Gazes opened his mouth but no words came forth.

Please let me see her! Please do not send me away this time! he pleaded in his head, struggling to make the words come from his mouth.

"Puh..Peace..." was what came out. The wrinkled warrior smiled with his rigid beak, the emblem of the raven burnt into his withered wing. His maw opened wide, impossibly wide, so that Gazes could see the stars burning in the darkness of his gullet.

"SCRAAAAW!" it bellowed, and then Gazes saw her. Floating, flapping, fluttering, a small spirit was winging out from her father's mouth. Kimana.

Kimana...do not trust your father. Come with me, run with me. The spirits whisper darkness of him, please. Kimana! he tried. He tried so hard, but he could neither speak nor move, as if he was rooted, or bound. In the air, the nature spirits whispered warnings to the fragile butterfly to fly faster, that her father was not the man she thought, that the ravens were gathering, that Gazes would protect her.

She froze. She hovered, on the edge between the growing darkness of her father and the outstretched hand of Gazes at Stars, the man who loved her.

"K-k-k..Ki..." he tried. The beautiful, radiant butterfly waited, frowned, and turned back into the smoke and guttering embers. The raven warrior snapped shut his beak and pointed his curled talon-hand away. Gazes turned to see, and looked out over the endless abyss. The branch beneath his feet creaked in the howling wind, and the shaman shifted to keep his balance thousands of feet above the Deadlands.

Tears fell freely as his heart pounded in his throat. The manitous behind him laughed and waited, pinning him between them and the drop. The radiant butterfly landed upon his hand, and he brought it to his face, whispering everything he wished he'd said to her. Kimana's spirit hushed him with her wings, and replied with words he had never forgotten.

"You are a liar and a fraud. You strive to tear apart our people for your own selfish desires. You have carved out my heart and asked me to love you for it. Leave me, Gazes at Stars."

The iridescent Kimana did not push him, but he fell nonetheless.

"I hate you."

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

Rabbit climbs into a smallish chamber decorated by four tapestries -- one on each wall, in the four sacred colors of Red, White, Yellow, and Black.

A fire burns in the middle of the room, the coals sending smoke flowing up to a hole in the ceiling. A kettle hangs over the stove...and Thunder Walker and Laughs At Darkness pass by her, looking concerned. The walls rattle at the sound of distant thunder...no. Not thunder. Drums.

The Coyote Shaman leads Thunder Walker to a peephole in the side of the chamber. He doesn't even acknowledge the sudden appearance of Screaming Rabbit, he just peeks in.

"hmmm." He mutters. "Not good."

He lets Thunder Walker take a look.

Outside the den is a storm-torn landscape. The Holy Mountain rises in the distance, a beacon to everything, and spirits fly through the air, avoiding the jagged bolts of lightning that tear up the ground. In between the flashes, Thunder Walker can see bodies. Hundreds of them. Thousands of them.

And the bodies, the corpses...all of them are moving, marching in formation. Indians and white men together, all wearing black. And at their head is The Hooded One, riding a horse and urging them onward.

"The Black Riders." Laughs At Darkness says, his voice far more solemn than normal. "And Raven. They are headed to Bear Butte. I do not think he intends to let the Ghost Dance happen."

Gazes At Stars falls through a storm-tossed sky. Below him, he sees an army of the dead, vast like a swarm of ants, crawling across the landscape. A terrible drumming pounds, shaking the sky...

And then Gazes finds himself stopped, his fall broken by the glowing green coils of Dogwa, and he hangs from the branches from an immense tree, looking down.

"Be sssilent." The spirit whispers to him. "Be sssstill. Dangerousss thingsss are acrawl."

"This is true." The shaman says. Without looking, he beckons to Rabbit to join them. "But look -- there are The People among the Riders. Many who dance, dance because they lost loved ones to battle with the White Man. At the Greasy Grass, at Slim Buttes, at Ten Thousand Arrows -- places where The Black Riders harvested the souls of the dead. The Ghost Dance calls the dead to the living. Imagine this -- Red Cloud and Black Kettle called to the living, but their souls are bound to the Black Riders. When they rise, and these angry dead are called with them...what happens then? When the Ghost Dance does exactly what it is meant to do, but instead of reunion, the result is a slaughter?"

Rabbit pads over, more femminine and more confident in her movements than Thunder Walker has ever seen her, and edges in to see what they're looking at. She frowns silently a moment, taking in the scene.

"Is this an idea, great shaman, or will it come to pass?" she asks, unperturbed as a dreamer. A little horror and indignation creeps into her tone as she listens to how the witches might poison the Dance.

"How can Black Kettle be bound to these? Did the People not watch him well?"

She looks up at Thunder Walker, and moves her hand to clasp his forearm if he'll allow the touch, though her question is to Laughs At Darkness. "-and what of Thunder Walker?" Finally, Thunder Walker gets a smile, a little shy but genuine as sunlight nonetheless.

"We still hope you will choose to come back, elder brother,"

He accepted the touch from Rabbit without hesitation. If he had been hesitant to speak earlier, he chose his words even more carefully when in the presence of this shaman. If the spirits permitted it, there would be more words later in another place, but for the moment, he only nodded in assent at her glance and her statement.

"We will go there, and we will find a way to stop them. It is too much to hope, but perhaps those whose minds have not been swayed in favor of the Ghost Dance will change look to their hearts when they see the Hooded One riding with these foul beings and change that could not be convinced in favor of it. We can wait for the Dance when the time is right, but with that many, his purpose can be only war, so we must fight to protect these Ghost Dancers," he said.

"Smart!" Laughs at Darkness cackles. "Or at least, smart enough to to when you are still being stupid." He points out to the sky. A small, glowing white figure circles in the air. "Wanbli Luja seeks them. Follow the swiftest eagle, but be cautious. Find Red Cloud and Black Kettle, bring them to me. I will do what I can to hide them from the Black Riders. And I will show you a trick. Thunder Walker is willing to come back. I can help you speed up this process, and there will be another to protect The Ghost Dancers in the waking world."

The coyote shaman moves over to a pile of oddments off to the side, and begins rummaging around. "Hmmm...AH! There it is!" He pulls out Rabbit's straight razor, then rummages some more. "Good!" He says, pulling for a small crystal...it looks like the crystal from an Uktena's skull, similar to the one Thunder Walker took, which feels so long ago now. He lopes back over to the two, holding out the trinkets. "These are yours. They should be helpful."

Dogwa nods. "One tasssk more." The sake points his head up to the sky. A lone eagle spirit, glowing a dazzling white, circles above the holy mountain. Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

The appearance of small frown mark between Rabbit's brows is all the reaction to that that makes it to the surface: Rabbit looks out at the dead again. "Most of them don't have much skin..." she observes, thinking hard. A sensation like a forgotten idea pulls at her mind for attention.

quote:
- I could help.

Who are you?

- A name-patron. One of your village shrine gods, but I don't dare manifest with that sharp-toothed fellow or the eagle around, or all those nasty dead guys. I c'n make you the form of a beast, clothes, weapon an' all, because this quest...

Wait, where would the clothes go?

There was a pause. - Sort of...in your skin?

Rabbit mentally recoiled. I must refuse you, honourable spirit. Nothing goes inside this flesh without my full awareness and consent, which for dirty clothes and...and knives I do not give.

- How about a full swap, then? You take my body when I have yours, and vice versa?

Forgive me, although you have a familiar accent I cannot trust you that much.

- Simple shape? I c'n put the idea of my shape over yours, so you would have yer own body, just changed about. You'd be a right nakey humin when you changed back, though.

I can accept that. My thanks to you, generous spirit.

- It's not much help, but...reach out yer mind this way...here.

The conversation in Rabbit's thoughts takes only the space of a blink: then Rabbit's eyes widen, she gives a sort of squeak, and her empty clothes collapse in a pile.

[[18:51, Today: Tan Xiaohan rolled 7,1 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+1)7,1.  much medicine.]]

A small, very literal Rabbit hops out from under the shirt, stands on her hind legs, and pulls down an ear to look at. Her markings are back to black in this form, which would at least be camoflage on the ground outside.

quote:
Form of a beast, huh, Earth Rabbit?

- Hey, it's super-super stealthy. Fast, too. Um. Watch out for sharpteeth.

I'm not complaining. Thank you. You are a brave peasant god.

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

Gazes moved his eyes between the Thunderbird and the Raven.

"The Hooded One was not the Raven, I thought? How is it he leads them here..." he said, and thought hard on the options before him.

The thought of facing either the powerful Hooded One, or even Raven if that was his true identity, filled him with icy fear. But the Temptation of ending the fight here, now... the other shaman, Rabbit, had drawn Raven's blood. If Raven could bleed, he could be killed.

OOC: Do I know of the plan/desire to return Black Kettle and Red Cloud to life with the Ghost Dance? Would Dogwa's words be readily interpreted to mean those two?

He accepts the stone and looks at it with a strange expression that is a mix of reverence, uncertainty, and remembrance of things past. It was not long after that he had first met the one who would come to be called Screaming Rabbit, who was now by his side.

"Yes, perhaps we should disguise ourselves, but still move quietly so as not to attract notice," he agreed. "I can perhaps help you in moving quietly."

Rabbit pulls her lasor out of her clothes and spends a little time carefully unpicking the knot that binds the thunderbird feather to it with her teeth: this she takes to Thunder Walker, gesturing to wave it around then at the outside. She leaves it on his foot, hops back for her lasor and picks it up in her mouth.

Just to check, the bunny throws her head violently to the side, flicking the blade to full extension. Satisfied, she closes it against the ground and carries it in her mouth to Thunder Walker's side.

Gazes stared a long time. Much longer than he usually stared at anything other than the stars themselves.

"Dogwa. Can you help me reach the Swiftest Eagle? I can call for aid."

Gazes began chanting, softly at first, but then with more fervor as he called out to the spirits to aid him.

He glanced over at Rabbit as she made her transformation, and then picked up the feather that she had given him. He didn't know whether she would understand him in her present form.

"I think I can take us there, Rabbit," he said, concentrating on the diamond he had once taken from the Uktena. He remained quiet for some time while he focused on the stone, fervently thinking of the spirits and his ancestors, asking them for the favor he needed.

If Rabbit shows no sign of returning to her normal form, he will reach down and see if she wishes to be picked up.

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

Gazes At stars climbs, down and down. Luckily, unlike his frequent nightmares, he's not the focus of anyone, but he can feel a power rising from the den at the roots of the tree.

He reaches the ground, and sees a faint light from inside the den. It looks like a tight squeeze.

As Thunder Walker concentrates on the stone, filling it with power from around him and forging a connection with the spirit he wished to travel to, Laughs At Darkness suddenly looks up at the entrance of the den.

"heheheheHAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!" he cackles.

From inside the den, Gazes At Stars hears a chilling, mournful coyote howling. Or is that laughter? He's not entirely sure, but either way, it doesn't sound at all inviting.

((OOC: Hmmm...the Portal function of Contact Spirit World usually doesn't connect two place in the Hunting Grounds...it's a portal to/from The Hunting Grounds to the Material World. But since you have Wanbli Luja's feather, that's a good physical connection, and sympathetic magic is known to work in Deadlands. So alrighty. I can give you this. Remember that opening a portal from the Hunting Grounds has a -2 penalty (it's easier to get in than get out), though that's still a success.

The 18 minute focus time, however, is more than enough time for Gazes At Stars to reach the roots of the tree and find the den...and LaD tries to scare him away with an Intimidation ToW.

23:59, Today: Laughs At Darkness rolled 4,4 using d8+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 2,2.  Intimidate ToW.

Gazes looks up a few times while the coyote-clad man stares. But there are no stars in the roof of the den, and so the signs are difficult.

Laughs at Darkness tilts his head.

A sign.

"Then we are agreed. We will find the souls of Red Cloud and Black Kettle, keep them safe, then find the heart of Tom Custer, now in the hands of the one with Rain On His Face, and use it to dance the ghost dance on Greasy Grass, thus severing the power of the Black Riders and depriving Raven of his manitou army.

"This will leave only the man Custer himself and the Ravenites as an impediment to Wovoka's vision. The failure of Raven's army will draw the Ravenites to the forefront as they scramble to recover or revenge, and Yellow Hair's army's will be forced out by the Ghost Dance.

"All signs point to this."

He stares with a satisfied smile on his face.

The rabbit grunted for attention at Gazes' mention of the hostages and jerked her head up at the feather held by Thunder Walker. Wanbli Luja could surely locate those held captive, and Thunder Walker had claimed he might be able to get them to the eagle's side of the army. Gazes At Stars might notice that this small speckled bunny had markings that looked somehow familiar in their positioning, plus the heap of clothing on the floor.

Rabbit sat up on her hind legs and looked from the Lakota to the Shoshone and back, unsure whether an extra person would make whatever Thunder Walker was attempting more difficult.

The shaman begins poking about in his pile of junk. "A medicine shield and a coup stick, you say..." he pulls out what looks like a glass globe filled with water and little white flecks that flow like snow, shrugs, and rolls it away. He pulls out a golden ring with some odd curly writing along it's length. "Huh. So that's where that got to. Hello there, my precious." he says, then tosses it over his shoulder. It clinks and rolls away. He pulls out a colorful scarf, which is attached to another colorful scarf, and another, and another, and...he spends a good fifteen seconds pulling out this long line of scarves before the line suddenly halt. The shaman sighs. "Stuck. Of course." he yanks on the scarf until out pops a medicine shield. He untied the end of the scarf rope from the medicine shield and sets it aside, then returns to searching.

"Hmmm." he says, pulling out a war club, the end whittled into a horse's head. "I think this is the best I have. You'll have to make do."

He picks up the medicine shield and heads over to Gazes At Stars. He holds the implements out. "Here you are!"

Thunder Walker's portal finishes forming. The circular space floats serenely in the air, a glowing white disk emanating a soft light. If it's this bright on the other side, someone will notice it for sure.

He looked to the Shaman. "With your blessing, we will proceed."

The Shaman nods. "Wakan-Tanka go with you, my friends." He says. "Well, not friends, exactly. Acquaintances I am mildly fond of. HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!"

Rabbit, looking through the portal, sees a gentle slope, and a clearing in the trees on the mountainside. It looks a lot like the spot where she summoned Tatanka to speak with Wolf Runner, actually. And thankfully, it's not a hundred feet down. The portal is at ground level.

Of course, she also sees a circle of rotting soldiers in black coats atop skeletal mounts. They charge round a trio of people. Two of them look like elderly indians, while one is a white man in a white tabard with a red cross, kneeling and holding the handle of a mighty sword into the ground, head down as if praying. The two Indians are also chanting what sounds like a prayer of warding.

She sees some of the black riders look towards the portal, and break from the group...

Thunder Walker's spiritual form in this place seemed to shift. He walked toward the portal, one foot in front of the other, but before long it seemed that his feet were no longer feet but paws, and his stride was more of a lope. What leaped into the portal to the other side was no longer the shape of a man, but that of a mountain lion, though one larger than any other mountain lion seen in the lands of men.

OOC:

Spending 5 PP to shape shift into a Lion, but taking the form of a mountain lion that would be found in these parts.

The dead soldiers charge, their unholy steeds rattling as they close on the trio emerging from the portal. The trio of soldiers raise their carbines and fire.

Thunder Walker feels something tug at his foreleg, but it's only a scratch. It stings, but his powerful form absorbs the shot without complaint.

Gazes At Stars is less lucky, and he feels a bullet hit his thigh.

Meanwhile, the remaining black soldiers circle around the trio of holy people, jeering and yelling hateful insults that the group at the portal can't quite make out. But the power of the Templar seems to be holding them at bay, and all they can do is curse him -- and those curses seem to fall flat.

((OOC: The Black Regiment goes first.

The trio attacking you move in closer, and take shots at you with their Spencer Carbines. They have Steady Hands, so they don't suffer a penalty firing while mounted. They make 2 attacks at Lion!Walker, and one shot at Gazes. And yes, they are close enough to trigger Coup Counter.

Attacks Vs. Thunder Walker: 20:52, Today: The Black Regiment rolled 8,1 using d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of (6+2)8,1.  Shooting. 1 Miss, 1 hit with Raise

Damage: 5. That's some crappy damage right there. It's not enough to hurt you in this form, or even make you Shaken.

Attack vs. Gazes: 20:56, Today: The Black Regiment rolled 5 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5.  Shooting. Hit.

Damage: 12. The die roller doesn't like you, it seems. That's a Shaken and 1 Wound unless you soak.

Meanwhile, the Black Regiment attempt to breach the Templar's Protection power. This is a group roll for them, since they're Extras and I don't feel like rolling a ton of dice. The Templar has a holy symbol presented, so he gets a +2 on his roll.

20:59, Today: The Black Regiment rolled 5,3 using d4,d6, rerolling max with rolls of (4+1)5,3.  Spirit.

21:00, Today: Jeremy Thatcher rolled 10,7 using d10+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 8,5.  Faith.

Nope. They aren't getting through this round.

Since they can't attack, they make Intimidation Tests of Will against the people inside the protection sphere. They're defaulting on this, though.

21:06, Today: Red Cloud rolled 7,5;4,5 using d8,d6,d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 7,5,4,5.  Resisting ToW.

Red Cloud is unimpressed.

Vs. Black Kettle: 21:04, Today: The Black Regiment rolled 0,1 using d4-2,d4-2, rerolling max with rolls of 2,3.  Intimidate ToW.

Rabbit's darting puts the horses into a panic, and one of them even rears.

Meanwhile, one of the Indians near the chanting Templar, an old man wearing a bonnet of eagle feathers and bloody cane armor, casually reaches down to pick up a fist-sized stone, and chucks it at one of the jeering riders. The stone shatters the dead man's skull, and it vanishes in a puff of greasy black smoke.

The other Indain, a man wrapped in a blanket with a pair of braids, concentrates, his hand on the Templar's shoulder.

That's 3 failures, and Rabbit gets a raise on one. Which Trick effect were you going for?

Red Cloud, not being a shaman, can't help maintain the circle. But he can attack out of it no problem. Trouble is, as a spirit he has no weapons on him, so he picks up a good-sized rock and chucks it at one of the Black Riders. His Marskman edge cancels out the MAP from drawing a weapon.

17:40, Today: Red Cloud rolled 4,3 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,3.  Throwing. hit.

He winds up doing 13 damage to the soldier, which is a wound. It vanishes in a greasy black puff, along with the horse. He's got a good arm for someone nearing 60.

Red Cloud's cards: 9C, 10H

The Templar can't take any actions without breaking his spell.

Black Kettle is using his action to help bolster the Templar's power.

17:46, Today: Black Kettle rolled 9,4 using d12,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 9,4.  Tribal Medicine.

That provides the Templar with an additional +2 on his rolls to resist attacks from the dead.

OOC:

Coincidentally, Rabbit, that's exactly the effect of The Setup trick effect.

Question for the GM:

Based on how much area each square is supposed to represent, is there a spot where if I put TW into it, both those left two riders would be 'adjacent' to him, allowing him to attack two targets from that position?

I ask as I'm thinking about running up and Pouncing in, taking a swipe at each using the lion's Improved Frenzy, but if not I'll be more than happy to repeatedly pummel one of them.

The roaring mountain lion crashed into the Black Riders, smashing them completely. They and their mounts vanished into black mist.

From the encroaching army, A band of riders breaks off. It's The Hooded One! And he's not alone... a band of dead men, including a distressingly familiar huge Hunkpapa, as well as a number of dead Indians (probably the souls of those bound to him) follow behind. The Hooded One raises a hand to the sky, and shouts something that the group can't quite hear.

Thunder rumbled...and then a giant thundercloud blotted out the sky. angry thunderbolts flashes around the flying eagle spirit.

"Time for you to die, Swiftest Eagle." The thunder rumbled, in perfectly understandable speech. "As will all who defy the mighty Raven!"

In the sky, The Swiftest Eagle jukes and dives, gracefully avoiding bolt after crackling bolt of lightning. One bolt catches the eagle. The lightning rolls across Wanbli Luja's feathers like rain off down. But another blot speaer right through the might eagle, sending it plummeting from the sky...

...for a moment. The eagle rights itself, then flies into the thundercloud and flaps his mighty wings.

Thunder roars across the field as a sphere of sound rips through the cloud, scattering part of it. The cloud parts like blown smoke, and rain begins to fall on the mountainside, drenching the tiny group below. But the cloud begins pulling itself back together again.

Red Cloud again grabs a sizable rock, takes aim, and knocks another rider back to the Deadlands with a well-placed throw. The templar and Black Kettle continue chanting.

((OOC: The Wakinyan attempts to swat Wanbli Luja, currently in the form of a Thunderbird, out of the sky. Wanbli returns the favor by using his Thunderclap on the Wakinyan. The stormcloud needs to make a Vigor check (at -2) or be Shaken.

He wasted no time, his heavily muscled giant puma form bounding across the grass at unbelievable speed, pouncing at the two riders of the Black Regiment, claws at either side ripping into them.

OOC:

Alright so...from what I can tell Pace 8 + Run 6 + Pounce 6 should be just enough to get this puma over to make a similar double attack on the ones surrounding Black Kettle, Red Cloud, and the Templar.

If that's the case, with Pounce bonus and Improved Frenzy, and the -2 MAP for running and attacking:

Fighting 1: 11
Fighting 2: 11
Damage 1: 20 (Shaken + Wound)
Damage 2: 9 (Shaken)

Crappy second damage roll, but I must have used up my luck, which is what it took to max run and Pounce, without which he wouldn't have been in position to attack in the first place.

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

Rabbit hesitates a moment, but with Gazes' and the prisoners' help Thunder Walker was probably all right. Unless these more fleshy dead men riding up caught him.

Rabbit flattens her ears and starts charging in a rapid zigzag downslope. The scent of the strange ground and storm wind finds her on the inbreath as she draws a lungful around her lazor to make what battlecry a rabbit can.

"EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!!!"

[[Screaming Rabbit charges the frikkin' Thunder Guard, in hopes of confusing and/or distracting them, to give the rest a chance to get away. Hopefully being smol and fast-moving helps, even if there's not enough grass for Light Cover.

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

The Hooded One points at Screaming Rabbit, and the braves on horseback and the two dead gunslingers beside him aim their rifles at the hopping target. The Hooded One chants something. Hawk spirits appear in the sky, and then fly into the braves. The braves suddenly sprout hawk's eyes around their own, and ghostly beaks cover their noses.

The braves and the gunslingers unleash a fusillade on the darting Rabbit, and though her form is quick and agile, the bullets whiz close enough to tear up the ground around her, sending a sharp rain of dirt and gravel, and one of the rocks strikes her hard in the side...

((OOC: Um...alrighty, then.

There are 5 Veteran Ravenite Braves, 2 Harrowed Gunslingers, a Harrowed Brujo, Rotten Bear Killer, and The Hooded One himself. They're riding horses, so they have a Pace of 8. They move closer in, and that screaming rabbit heading at them is a tempting target.

The Hooded One uses his action to cast Boost Trait (Shooting) on the five braves.

11:00, Today: Raven rolled 9,5 using d12,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 9,5.  Tribal Medicine.

That grants the braves +2 steps to their Shooting, giving them each d12+1.

The Brujo draws his Winchester. RBK draws his bow.

The 5 Ravenites and 2 Gunslingers are armed with Winchesters, which have a short range of 24"...and Rabbit's well within that. They have a -2 penalty for firing from horseback, and another -4 for Rabbit being so small and agile. The Ravenites are Extras, the Gunslingers are Henchmen and thus have a Wild Die.

11:19, Today: Ravenite Braves rolled 1,5,3,5,0 using d12-5,d12-5,d12-5,d12-5,d12-5, rerolling max with rolls of 6,10,8,10,5.  Shooting (Unsteady Platform, Small Target).

11:20, Today: Thunder Guard rolled 3,-3 using d10-6,d6-6, rerolling max with rolls of 9,3.  Shooting (Unsteady Platform, Small Target).
11:20, Today: Thunder Guard rolled -4,3 using d10-6,d6-6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,(6+3)9.  Shooting (Unsteady Platform, Small Target).

That's 2 hits for the braves, no hits from the Gunslingers

Damage 1: 6. Given Rabbit's low Toughness in this form, that's a Shaken
Damage 2: 4. That's also a Shaken, which will be 1 wound if she doesn't soak.

As the blades stabbed at him from all sides, Thunder Walker in the form of the mountain lion, danced back and forth to avoid taking a serious injury, though he couldn't avoid blood being drawn. He leaped at two of them from where he sat, flying at them with his massive paws at the ready, ready to strike them down if he could.

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

The elderly shaman nods. "Come, friend." he says to the man in the white tabard. "We must depart."

The man shakes his head. "No. I told you, I must serve The Greater Good. You go. I will bar the way, and make sure these foul things cannot follow."

Black Kettle nods. "Then until we meet again, Great Spirit watch over you." And the old man runs back toward the portal.

The templar stands, and picks up a shield made of some odd, clear material, not quite glass. The word "POLICE" with written on it in great big block letters. he mutters a quick prayer...

And then suddenly he is moving with inhuman speed, his sword flashing and darting as he charges the two remaining deaders. Between his sword and Thunder Walker's claws, the soldiers are quickly dispatched.

"They must not escape!" The Hooded One shouts. "Ignore the rabbit...we must get the chiefs!"

The braves do just that...they aim and fire at the old chieftain up the hill, who pitches and rolls as the bullets rain down on him. He's hit, but still moving.

The dead gunslingers next to The Hooded One, however, continue taking pot-shots at the fluffy bunny target. And one of them actually hit Rabbit right in the guts...

"Black Kettle!" The other chief says, running up to the old man. For an elderly person himself, he sure seems to be able to move with a speed younger men would envy.

"I am fine." Black Kettle gasps. Black spirit blood oozes from a graze in his leg. "I have been wounded worse. Keep going, Red Cloud!"

Red Cloud nods, and continues running onward.

((OOC: Black Kettle comes Off Hold, and the Templar drops his Protection power to join in the fight. Black Kettle begins running for the portal, while the Templar makes with the slashy-slashy.

Black Kettle gets a 4 on his run check. Since his Pace is 5 (he's old), that gets him 9 squares toward the portal.

Black Kettle's Card: 8S

Jeremy Thatcher has an Edge that allows him to cast spells on himself as a free action once per round, which he does. He casts Quickness. He also picks up his Riot Shield with Quick Draw, which he'd set down to use his Protection power.

22:18, Today: Jeremy Thatcher rolled 3,16 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,(6+6+4)16.  Faith. Yup, that's a success and raise. He gets an extra action each round, and can redraw any initiative card lower than an 8.

He moves to flank the remaining BR, and slashes at them with a Wild Attack. he has an edge that gives him bonus damage here.

22:21, Today: Jeremy Thatcher rolled 11,6 using d10+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 9,4.  Fighting (Wild Attack). hit and Raise

Damage: 14. That one goes down.

22:23, Today: Jeremy Thatcher rolled 13,4 using d10+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of (10+1)11,2.  Fighting (Wild Attack). Another hit and raise.

Damage: 24. That one goes down, too.

Jeremy's Card: 10D. Incidentally, Jeremy is an Ally, so would one of you like to run him for the duration of this fight?

The Hooded One orders his goons to concentrate on the mission, rather than the bunny. The five Ravenites take shots at Black Kettle, though they're at Medium Range and on Unsteady Platforms, so they have a -4 penalty.

22:43, Today: Ravenite Braves rolled 9,4,5,2,11 using d10-4,d10-4,d10-4,d10-4,d10-4, rerolling max with rolls of (10+3)13,8,9,6,(10+5)15.  Shooting (Unsteady Platform, Medium Range).

Apparently they have really good aim, because 4 of them hit, and two of them have Raises.

Damage: 12, 7, 9, 16. That's 1 wound, A Shaken, Another Shaken, and 2 wounds, respectively.

Black Kettle is a Wild Card, so he has some chips, and he can use GM chips. He attempts to soak the first wound, spends a chip to negate the Shaken penalty so that the second one doesn't become a Wound, then attempts to Soak the 2 wounds. It costs him all his chips and 1 GM chip to attempt all this. He soaks, but it winds up costing him a GM Red Chip as well.

Meanwhile the gunslingers attempt to shoot Rabbit. The Hooded One and the brujo don't do anything this round.

22:55, Today: Black Riders rolled -3,-4 using d10-6,d6-6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,2.  Shooting.
22:55, Today: Black Riders rolled 13,-3 using d10-6,d6-6, rerolling max with rolls of (10+9)19,3.  Shooting (Unsteady Platform, Small Target).

Man the Dice don't like you guys. One of the gunslingers gets a Hit and Raise on Rabbit.

Damage: 18. That will be 3 Wounds for Rabbit if she can't soak.

Raven's card: 4C, 10H

Red Cloud, meanwhile, runs, following Black Kettle. Red Cloud is old, but he's also faster than Black Kettle (he is Fleet-Footed). He gets a 10, so he moves 17" toward the portal.

Red Cloud's Card: AC, 7S))

((OOC: Since the purpose of your Trick is to slow them up (the rest of the group is fairly far away, so giving them Set-up bonuses isn't helpful), I'l use the Delay option on this. 23:04, Today: Rotten Bear Killer rolled 4,11 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,(6+5)11.  Riding. RBK also Succeeds in remaining horsed.

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

The darting, flashing, fuzzy nuisance sends the horses screaming and rearing. Most of the deaders keep control, but one of the gunslingers falls under his horse. Unfortunately, he's not trampled enough to be seriously hurt by that.

The Ravenite braves charge past the Templar, whooping and firing. Black Kettle manages to avoid the worst of it, but those aiming at the giant puma have deadly aim. One of the shots hits Thunder Walker hard, and then a second one, and he feels his spirit ebbing...

The giant Hunkpapa brave with the squirming manitou crawling around his skin looks over at Jeremy.

"A hero. I like heroes." He says. "I like crushing them to pieces! HOKA HEY!"

And with that, the giant smelly man-mountain sprouts translucent wolf fur and charges at the Templar, his massive bladed war club whistling through the air as he swings!

But Jeremy' riot shield is up before the mighty warrior arrives, turning the crushing blow into a glancing one. The horse screams in protest as Rotten Bear Killer reigns him in and turns to face Jeremy. "Good! A worthy battle! Show me what you got, pale face!"

Meanwhile, The Hooded One speaks a faint chant, and his robes shimmer with holy power. "Kill the rabbit." he growls at the gunslingers and the Brujo. Then he rides off, pulling his mighty war club free.

"Eeeee-HAW!" The mounted gunslinger whirls abnd cranks a few futile shots into the bushes where Rabbit is hidden.

The unhorsed one, however, just gives the bunny a cold glare as he calmly lines up a shot. His bullet strikes much too near, sending chips of sage into Rabbits eyes.

The brujo mutters something, and dark spirits swarm around the shrubbery...but Rabbit sees through the illusion.

I am now hearing Yakety Sax in my head. Let's see how many fall off their horses. These horses are Undead, so they don't mind their Harrowed riders.

16:28, Today: Raven rolled 3,4 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,4.  Riding.
16:29, Today: Thunder Guard rolled 1,1; 11,3 using d8,d6,d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,1,(8+3)11,3.  Riding.
16:33, Today: Ravenite Braves rolled 4,1 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,1.  Riding.

One Crit-fails and eats dirt, the others pass. I decide that Crit-Fail means this harrowed takes an extra d6 of damage. I wind up rolling a 3 for damage. Wut? Anyhoo, that one is still unhorsed and Shaken, and they all get delayed a little longer.

That means Black Kettle gets to go before them. He Runs again.

16:37, Today: Black Kettle rolled 4 using 1d6.  Running. That gets him 9 squares, which puts him close enough to the portal that he can make it in, assuming he survives this round.

Black Kettle's Card: 2H. Yikes. Not good for him.

So, I have a whole mess 'o Shakens to deal with...

Ravenite Braves: 5 are Shaken. 16:42, Today: Ravenite Braves rolled 13,5,13,23,5 using d8,d8,d8,d8,d8, rerolling max with rolls of (8+5)13,5,(8+5)13,(8+8+7)23,5.  Unshake.

All unshake, 3 of them with Raises.

Rotten Bear Killer: Is Shaken. He spends a GM White to Unshake automatically.

Gunslingers: 1 is Shaken. He's undead, which gives him +2 to unshake. 16:47, Today: Thunder Guard rolled 9,11 using d8+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 7,(6+3)9.  Unshake. Success and Raise.

The Brujo: Is Shaken. 16:48, Today: Ravenite Braves rolled 9,4 using d8+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 7,2.  Unshake.

Success and Raise.

Raven: Is Shaken. Given he has a high spirit and Combat Reflexes, I don't expect him to remain so. 16:50, Today: Raven rolled 12,5 using d12+3,d6+3, rerolling max with rolls of 9,2.  Unshake.

Yup. Success and Raise.

Alrighty!

So the Ravenites proceed after Black Kettle, moving around Jeremy to avoid his blade.

The two with penalties take shots at Black Kettle, the 3 without take shots at Puma!Walker. I initially forgot the Unstable Platform penalty, so the rolls are actually worse than what's in the die roller logs. That's good for Black Kettle, but turns out not to matter much when I take it in to account against Thunder Walker. The Die Roller really, really hated on him here.

Vs. Black Kettle: 17:03, Today: Ravenite Braves rolled 3,0 using d10-4,d10-4, rerolling max with rolls of 7,2.  Shooting (Shaken penalty). Both Miss.

Vs. Thunder Walker: 17:04, Today: Ravenite Braves rolled 6,13,13 using d10-2,d10-2,d10-2, rerolling max with rolls of 8,(10+5)15,(10+5)15.  Shooting. Ow. three hits and 2 Raises

Damage 1: 2. That has no effect
Damage 2: 24. That is 4 wounds. That will make you Incapacitated if you can't soak.
Damage 3: 21. That is 3 wounds.

Fucking hell, the Die Roller hates you. Sorry about that.

Rotten Bear Killer sees Jeremy and thinks "ooo! Challenge!"

He attempts to activate his own Quickness ability.

19:40, Today: Rotten Bear Killer rolled 1,5 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,5.  Spirit. Success.

He has his weapon already drawn, and he's on horseback. He Charges at Jeremy...he'll get +4 damage if he hits. He can't use his Improved Frenzy edge on this, though.

19:44, Today: Rotten Bear Killer rolled 7,2 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 7,2.  Fighting (Charge!).

That's actually not enough, given Jeremy's Parry.

Rotten Bear Killer splits off from Raven's group for Initiative purposes.

RBK's Card: QH

The gunslingers take shots at Rabbit, despite the Heavy Cover. One of them is still on horseback, the other is now on foot.

19:49, Today: Thunder Guard rolled -2,-2 using d10-10,d6-10, rerolling max with rolls of 8,(6+2)8.  Shooting (Unsteady Platform, Small Target, Heavy Cover).

19:50, Today: Thunder Guard rolled 7,-5 using d10-8,d6-8, rerolling max with rolls of (10+5)15,3.  Shooting (Small Target, Heavy Cover).

The one on foot hits Rabbit.

Damage: 6, which is a Shaken.

Meanwhile, the Brujo attempts to flush Rabbit out by using the fear power.

19:54, Today: Ravenite Braves rolled 3,1 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3,1.  Tribal Medicine.

Fail. Rabbit is made of sterner stuff.

For his part, The Hooded One draws his Bladed War Club and casts Armor. He has a -2 MAP.

19:56, Today: Raven rolled 7,3 using d12-2,d6-2, rerolling max with rolls of 9,5.  Tribal Medicine. Success, and close enough to a Raise that he opts to spend a GM red chip to make it one.

19:56, Today: Raven rolled 2 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2.  Red Chip.

He gets +4 armor for the next 3 rounds, and then he attempts to ride around Jeremy. He winds up near the trees.

Raven's card: BJ! uh, oh.))

OOC:

Thunder Walker literally just came back, how you gonna do me like that? LOL ;)

Anyway, using the card 10C - Second Wind “I’m feeling much better now.”

Play on your hero to automatically remove all wounds sustained in this combat (but not crippling injuries). If Shaken, he is un-Shaken now as well. The Marshal gets to draw 2 random chips from the fate pot.

So I guess first I need to sustain all seven of those wounds, then use this card to eat them up.

Jeremy was pulled up short by the charging, fur-covered behemoth. The Hunkpapa challenged him, and the Templar accepted. He raised his riot shield into position again and peered through the plastic window at his foe. His body was ringed in light, his sword glinted in the shadows of the thunderstorms overhead, and his face was set in a stone-like grimace.

And even though his shield was polycarbonate and the armor beneath his tabard forged from scrap metal over strips of car tire, Jeremy Thatcher looked every bit like a glorious crusading knight.

Thunder Walker, hurt but still going, regains his feet.

In the sky, there is an enormous crack of thunder, a mighty roar, and a flash of light...and then the sky is filled with a mass of shimmering scales.

The dragon is vast, a mighty being as long as whole rivers, swathed in swirling clouds and fog. Everyone in the area can smell rain on the wind around the dragon, see stormlight glinting off his scales like lightning off choppy water. His voice is the rumble of angry thunder.

"How dare you!?" The mighty river dragon roars, glaring at The Hooded One's entourage. "You, who pull the dead from their graves? You think to capture the minds of men as you have ensnared these souls? No! The guardians of the underworld shall not stand for this! Come to me, mighty guardians! Show this wicked one the price of his folly!"

The ground rumbles, and two mighty figures pull themselves from the dirt and stone. They are massive slabs of muscle, standing twelve feet high. One has a head like an ox, the other the face of a horse. They roar defiance at The Hooded One and the Ravenites.

Meanwhile, a twisting form of brownish smoke curls up around Gazes At Stars. He hears a liquid chuckle from the smoke.

"Well, well, well. This seems quite funny. You called, chief. What do you want?"

((OOC: Alrighty, so the Second Wind cancels out the massive attacks.

The Shoshone Shaman briefly thought he had done rather well in calling down a river. Then the smoke curled up around him. Gazes thought he recognized the type of spirit, which was a good omen. He smiled broadly.

"Thunder and Fire in the sky, Rivers rumble through the air, and Ox and Horse have ridden man to guard the gates. The Signs are good. I have called you for aid, noble spirit."

He pointed toward Black Kettle. "That man is a great shaman whose voice will help unite us in peace, against the Lodge of the Raven. He must make it through that portal, to the one who Laughs in Darkness."

Gazes held off on asking anything of the spirit until he was sure the being was amenable.

These are Veteran Ravenite Braves, so they have a Parry of 8. That's a miss. However, they also need to make a Fear check because a huge bellowing oxman just ran at them to drag them to Hell. There is no Fear Level in the Hunting Grounds, so these are unmodified.

I'm not sure he has enough pace to get to anyone this action, so I'll get as close to the closest enemy as possible while still interposing himself between Black Kettle and the baddies.

The rain begins to fall as Horse Face slams his club into The Hooded One's horse, stunning it and sending the shaman scrambling to remain seated.

Meanwhile, the Yuan slowly drifts closer. The Ravenites, already panicked, can't get any more discombobulated.

However, in the sky, the mighty living thundercloud finally pulls itself together, and then, in a roar of thunder, sends a bolt of lightning at the river dragon!

Arcs of electricity light up the Yuanjiang, sending the mighty dragon spasming...but the Yuan isn't actually hurt by this. He is, however, stunned by the attack.

Wanbli Luja, still flying around the mighty fire spirit, claps his wings again, and again disperses the cloud in a thunderous boom heard across the battlefield.

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

The braves manage to get their mounts under control (mostly), and several of them take potshots. But they are scattered and divided.

One takes a shoat at Black Kettle, but the bullet goes wide. One takes a shot at the giant sky dragon. He hits...with about the same effect as a pebble striking a boulder.

One of them actually manages to wing Ox Head, the bullet taking him in the thigh.

Meanwhile, The Hooded One leaps off his frightened horse and stares down the horse-faced guardian. "This does not concern you, Guardian." He growls at the ogre. "But if you seek to thwart me, then you will die like all the other Guardians I've slain!"

And then he launches into a brutal attack. A dozen crushing blows rain down on Horse Face, and this warrior knows his stuff...there's a high, sharp {CRACK!} as The Hooded One drives his war club into Horse Face's ribcage.

Meanwhile, the gunslinger and the Brujo stare at their possessed comrade. "Deal with him." The Brujo growls.

The gunslinger nods. he reigns his horse in and takes aim. "Better you than me, Steve." he mutters, squeezing off a shot...but his horse bucks a bit, and the bullet goes wide.

The brujo, meanwhile, closes in on the bushes where Rabbit hides. He starts whispering. "Here, bunny bunny bunny...come to me. Come to me. I won't harm you. Come to me..."

And Rabbit feels a strange compulsion creeping into her limbs as he speaks...

((OOC: Alrighty. Checking to see if the horses Unshake. Counting The Hooded One's own horse in with this...he's the last one.

10:42, Today: Ravenite Braves rolled 7,5,3,5,3 using d6+2,d6+2,d6+2,d6+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 5,3,1,3,1.  Horse Unshake. 3 unshake, The hooded One and one of the others don't.

The three remaining Ravenites take some random potshots. One shoots at Black Kettle, one at Yuanjiang, and one at Ox Head. The Joker bonus is canceled out by the Unshake penalty.

10:48, Today: Ravenite Braves rolled 1,4,5 using d10-2,d10-2,d10-2, rerolling max with rolls of 3,6,7.  Shooting (Unsteady Platform).

Black Kettle: Miss.
Yuanjiang: Hit. 11 damage, AP 2, but these aren't heavy Weapons so the Yuan doesn't even feel it.
Ox Head: Hit. 18 damage, AP 2, which will be 1 Wound unless Ox Head soaks.

Meanwhile, Raven hops off his horse to better face Horse Face. He has Mighty Blow, so all his melee damage is doubled this round, and he has Improved Frenzy and the Joker Bonus.

10:55, Today: Raven rolled 4,8,3 using d12+2,d12+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 2,6,1.  Fighting (Joker). One Hit.

Damage: 13, doubled to 26, AP 2. That will be 3 wounds to Horse Face unless he soaks.

The Gunslinger and the Brujo have a compromised fellow and a rabbit to deal with.

The Gunslinger takes a shot at his companion, while the Brujo attempts to mind-control Rabbit with Beast Friend. The Gunslinger's Joker bonus is canceled out by the Unsteady Platform penalty.

Gunslinger: 11:01, Today: Thunder Guard rolled 2,1 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,1.  Shooting. Miss.

Brujo: 11:02, Today: Thunder Guard rolled 7,13 using d10+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 5,(6+5)11.  Tribal Medicine.

Gazes at Stars ran to Black Kettle's side and urged him forward. A short plea to the spirit of the thick-skinned armadillo of the Basin flew from his lips.

"Lend Black Kettle your strength, brave spirit!" He intoned, and grinned as the shimmering scales appeared superimposed over the other shaman.

Across the Battlefield, Koshari's host smiled wide, even as his body jerked and rebelled.

"Hey, fella, wake up. Lend a hand, would ya?" he said, raising one hand to aim his gun at the gunslinger opposite.

Meanwhile, Ox-head's slow turn to gaze at his attacker was the only sign he'd been hit.

((OOC:  Gazes runs to black kettle and stands between the shaman and the ravenites. He succeeds on Tribal Medicine, with a raise, giving Black Kettle +4 Armor for three rounds.

While the rest of the battle rages, the humongous brave with the humongous war club grins at Jeremy Thatcher, then screams and unleashes a super-humanly fast barrage of strikes. He's able to slip through Jeremy's defences a couple times, and the makeshift armor doesn't seem to help much against the giant's bladed club.

((OOC: So, resolving some rolls

The Manitou struggles for control: 10:35, Today: Thunder Guard rolled 4,4 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 4,4.  Dominion.

The Harrowed gains 1 point of Dominion, putting him at -3.

Meanwhile, the horse is Shaken, so I roll for the Ravenite to keep his seat.

10:41, Today: Ravenite Braves rolled 8 using 1d10, rerolling max with rolls of 8.  Riding.

That's a success (and raise, but that doesn't matter here.)

Now Rotten Bear Killer goes. He has Quickness going (2 rounds left) and the Improved Frenzy edge. So he goes to town on Jeremy with a Wild Attack on the first action (which allows him to avoid the Parry penalty, because he takes his next action immediately after -- see this ruling). For his second action, he does a normal Frenzy attack. Jeremy's Armor is reduced thanks to the Armor Piercing on RBK's bladed war club.

Action 1: 10:48, Today: Rotten Bear Killer rolled 7,10,4 using d10+2,d10+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 5,8,2.  Fighting (Wild Attack, Improved Frenzy). One hit

Damage: 17, AP 2. That's 1 Wound unless Jeremy soaks.

Action 2: 10:53, Today: Rotten Bear Killer rolled 13,8,9 using d10,d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of (10+3)13,8,(6+3)9.  Fighting (Improved Frenzy). 2 hits, 1 Raise

Damage 1 (Raise): 11, AP 2. That's only a Shaken thanks to Jeremy's Armor power.
Damage 2: 14, AP 2. That's 1 wound unless Jeremy soaks.

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

The Braves continue to urge their horses away from the mighty dragon. One of them makes for the giant glowing portal that is slowly shrinking. He takes a shot at the puma heading that same way.

{BANG!}

The bullet hits the ground near Thunder Walker's paws, sending a cascade of dirt and stone up to strike him, but not otherwise harming him.

The furthers Ravenite looks around. This was rapidly becoming untenable, and he was not eager to face the guardians of the dead nor the enormous river dragon floating in the sky. He had died once already. It was time to get out of here.

He turned his horse away from the battle, which it was eager to do anyhow. He could blame his cowardice on the horse. The Hooded One would understand that, right? No, better to make it look as if he were just looking for a better shot. He raised his rifle and fired at the red-haired man fighting Rotten Bear Killer.

{BANG!}

The Harrowed Gunslinger reigned in his horse. "Stupid thing!" He growled. "Stop moving, you idjit!" Once the mount was under control, he sighted along his Winchester's barrel. "Alright, Steve. Time to put you down for a small dirt nap."

{CRACK!}

The bullet hit Koshari's host right in the chest, sending the deader staggering...

While this was going on, the Brujo glared at the bunny hopping across the battlefield. "Oh no, you don't." He growled, and spurred his mount right at the fleeing Rabbit! Hooves thundered around Rabbit as the horse attempted to stomp her flat, but her speed and agility saved the day again, saving her from harm.

Raven faced down the horse-faced guardian.

"Spirits of snake, guide my hands as I strike!" He intoned. Ghostly serpents wound around his arms as he sent another barrage of strikes at Horse Face. But the guardian blocked them all. The Hooded One took a step back and gauged his foe. "Hrmph."

Jeremy's sword bit deep into the giant Harrowed's flesh, drawing a line of black blood across his wolf-furred chest.

"Good! Good!" The giant grinned. He didn't seem to feel the wound at all. "Now die!"

And then he launched another series of hideously fast blows, all aimed at battering Jeremy's brains out. Again and again he struck, until the vclub caught his jaw, and he saw stars...

And then, while he was recovering from the blow, he heard a distant {BANG!} and felt hot lead tear into his shoulder...

13:23, Today: Rotten Bear Killer rolled 7,7 using d12+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 5,5.  Soak.

RBk returns the favor with a series of attacks. First, a Frenzied Wild Attack:

13:24, Today: Rotten Bear Killer rolled 3,4 using d10+2,d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 1,2.  Fighting (Wild Attack, Improved Frenzy).

13:24, Today: Rotten Bear Killer rolled 10 using 1d10+2, rerolling max with rolls of 8.  Whoops, missed a roll.

1 Hit, no raise.

Damage: 17 (AP 2), which is Shaken and 1 Wound for Jeremy is he doesn't soak.

His next action is a regular Frenzy attack.

13:28, Today: Rotten Bear Killer rolled 1,2,3 using d10,d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1,2,3.  Fighting (Improved Frenzy). wut? Anyhoo, No hits.

Rotten Bear Killer's card: 7D))

TL;DR
Jeremy was hit by two attacks, and needs to soak 1 Wound from each.
Thundercat was hit, but the damage was negligible.
The Possessed Harrowed Gunslinger was hit and must soak 1 Wound.
Rabbit was attacked, but the attack missed.
Horse Face was attacked, but the attacks missed.
Rotten Bear Killer soaked his wound.
There is a Ravenite getting close to the portal.

Koshari laughed with his host's mouth as the body he was riding failed.

"Smooth move, genius."

Meanwhile, Jeremy let loose a ragged, hissing groan as he was assaulted by his foes. He hit his knees and spat blood. There was a brief moment of shuddering pain. He heard the crunch of Ox Head's hooves on the dirt beside him.

"..ds...th..r...th me", he mumbled through a broken jaw. He took a deep breath and repeated him, and stood again, white light bleeding out of his wounds. The gunman's bullet eased its way out of his flesh.

"The Gods and Saints of Death are with me," he whispered his prayer to the Saint of Death.

He exploded forward in a flash of steel and power. His blows found no purchase on the Bear Killer's flesh, but his continued his assault undaunted.

((OOC: Koshari opts to let his host be incapacitated, under my assumption that the mudhead will be kicked out into the Hunting grounds relatively unharmed.
Likewise, Jeremy will elect to take both wounds, putting him at Two Wounds. Then on his turn he casts Healing as a free action and maintains Quickness. First Action: Cast Healing (raise),Wild Attack, failed. Second Action, Attack, fail.

The man beneath the robe is stern-looking, his face and body scarred from many fights. He doesn't look particularly old -- he seems about the same age as Crazy Horse. ((OOC: Gang-up counts the number of allies around when you make your attack, and doesn't care about when they got there.

Charging is actually a Special Ability, not a normal combat move. The closest analog would be a Wild Attack (+2 Fighting, +2 to damage rolls, -2 Parry), which doesn't require any momentum.

BTW, laughing out loud at this mental image. And another funny look for her collection!

First, I'm going to make a Notice check to see if The No-Longer-Hooded One actually spots Rabbit before the attack. He's a bit busy, after all.

13:27, Today: Raven rolled 8,3 using d10,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 8,3.  Notice.

13 damage will make him Shaken, unless you want to make this a Wild Attack (which would mean you got a Raise and would get an extra d6+2 damage, which means at least 1 wound, maybe more).

Also, I check to see if he suffers bleeding from the lazor.

Re: Chapter 6.2: Pow Wow on the Mountain ((Bear Butte))

OOC:

An interesting situation. It's important for the PCs to keep going away from the scene, important to shift focus back towards the PCs, but also important to play the scene out however it would happen.

Unlike Jeremy, Yuanjiang and the Guardians of the UnderworldTM (that's going to be the name of my Metallica cover band) have no need of leaving this place through the portal, and they don't like these people (Raven & Co.) who are involved with manipulating the souls of the dead.

After seeing to Rabbit's wellbeing, Yuan would probably keep his posse around long enough to send Raven and company into flight, though he wouldn't need to give chase - just to get rid of them from here and then go back to his business. They would also probably help Jeremy if he was behind, since they saw him fighting on the same side as his favorite shaman.

After Raven & Co. are gone, though, I think he's back in your hands.
