Chapter 6.1.2: Auld Lang Syne ((Woolly Buffalo))

James Wilder:
Michael David Wilder:
"Wait, Carter was there!?" Michael says, aghast. "Don't you think maybe you should've lead with that!? Where is is? Did you shoot him down? Dammmit, why didn't you get me in on this?"

James just looks at his brother for a long moment, "Yes I shot him! A lot actually, but he's either not quite human anymore or has bought some of that rather fancy Smith & Robards crap." He lowers his voice  a bit trying not to announce things, "But I did manage to get his pistol in all the commotion and previously he challenged me to a dual tomorrow at noon."

Catherine Hays Cox:
Katy was trying to keep her full attention on Logan, and wanted to give James a chance to provide his own report on the dealings with Carter, but there was a piece of information that seemed important at the moment so she looked over towards James. "Carter's gun ain't in workin' order jus' now. I put a whammy on it so it needs ta get fixed. Ain't gonna be impossible, but if yer plannin' ta use it, ya gotta either figger out how ta repair the thing or find someone that does. That scientist lady that we met outside the Bella Union might be just whatcha need."

Having said her piece, her head swiveled back so the vast majority of her attention could be on Logan again.

Logan West:
"You know, when I first got sent out west, I started to hear some things I didn't rightly credit till I'd seen it myself. Takes a bit o' getting' used to, but there ain't much use pretendin' things ain't what they are, far as I see it," he said, tapping his head. "You see, they might send a Marshal out to bring in a fugitive. What happens when the fugitive is one o' them? I don't have to tell you that they can be pretty nasty customers. You start to learn things about 'em. Our duties ain't supposed to, but they can bleed into dealin' with weird shit as it crops up. I don't suppose I rightly have the whole picture, but I've learned enough to keep my head connected." He sighed, taking in the room. He didn't want to let the situation get away from him. So far, things seemed alright. But there were enough powerful players in this room to cause a mess if they didn't all get along, and he knew there was at least one loose cannon in here, a man willing to kill whoever he thought deserved death. Those people always took an extra level of effort.

"But I get what you mean about humanity and all that. I first got into the business I'm in 'cause I could put my skill set to use doin' somethin' other than killin' folks for no good reason. Might be there was a good reason when it all kicked off, but I don't reckon there is one now. I figure there's a chance to do some good out here. Far as humanity's concerned, you and I are on the same side. We're out here in no man's land. I'm sure there's a reason you're out here, as there is with me. As long as we're not on cross purposes, there's no reason we can't cooperate if our approaches should align."

"And Katy? You keep callin' me Marshal, I'm gonna have to start callin' you Ranger."

Catherine Hays Cox:
Katy looked a bit chagrined at the admonition, and averted her eyes for a moment. When her gaze came back to Logan, a smirk that he ought to remember well from childhood pulled at her lips. "Sorry, Logan. Still gettin' used ta ya bein' a US Marshal an all. Sometimes my brain takes ta new stuff better when I say it a few times." The smirk changed into a smile as she considered the whole picture. "Don't know if most anyone's got the whole picture, Logan. 'Cept mebbe Miss Wells over there." She briefly looked over at Jackie before her face turned back toward Logan. "Don't know if ya've talked ta her much, but she's the reason I'm here. If what she's said is accurate, well, some things're gonna need ta change."

Katy took another sip of whiskey, the small drinks making sure it lasted a good long while but wouldn't affect her judgement. She still held the glass even when she set it down. "I sure hope we can co-operate even when things don't align perfectly. I could use a friend here, Logan. It's not like they sent two Rangers up this way, and this is a long way from Austin. An that sure can go both ways. Sometimes I get you into trouble, and other times you get me into trouble. Just like when we were kids, right?"

James Wilder:
Michael Wilder:
"Oh. Oh damn." Michael says. "Sorry. I...I just...I wish I'd been there, you know? Pay him back for what he did to us."

James Lonefeather:
Jimmy Lonefeather blinks. "You hadn't mentioned that. I guess that explains the explosion."

"The place went pretty crazy ... at the end of the day I'm not sure exactly what happened in that place. Seemed like the building itself was out to get folks..." James said with a slight frown as though he didn't trust his own memories of the situation. "Regardless, we're here hunting Carter who has probably going to ground which means we need Maddox to help out as Jimmy thinks he's the guy in the know."

Michael David Wilder:
"Well, then, let's go get him!" Michael says.

Coot nods. "I'm ready to go, if y'all are."

"Sounds good to me." Jackie says. Wild Bill just nods.

Ezekiel Starkweather:
In reply to Michael David Wilder (msg # 247):

"Good. Enough jawing already."
He said. He still was mostly watching Bill. Without the Coot's drink, or Well's gun, only the people like Zek had a chance to stop Bill. Those chances where not good.

Ezekiel Starkweather:
Union Troops:
"Injuns!" someone shouts. "We got a war party of Injuns in the streets!"

Zek heard the cry, and glanced back at Bill and the Coot. Then he glanced back into the direction of the scream once more. "Bill...keep an eye on the old man for me, ok?"

He headed for the cries of panic, most likely a mistake but he did so anyways. ((GM OOC: And this is where Zeke leaves the group around the Woolly Buffalo))

Logan West:
In reply to Catherine Hays Cox (msg # 235):

"Just like when we were kids," he said with a smile. "You've always gotta friend in me, Katy. And if you need me to have your back, I'll have it. I did talk to Miss Wells earlier, and she told me a mighty strange story, but I believed it. She had information that paid off, and basically predicted certain…aspects of the situation with the saloon, though she did stop myself and my associate from puttin' paid to a nasty deader that's been runnin' around by the name o' Janet Weiss. I believe she's wanted by your people too. She ain't got the head cold bad, but she's just rotten at the core, and I ain't talkin' 'bout decay. Other than that, as far as most things are concerned, I figure on listenin' to Miss Wells and takin' heed," he said.

He paused to listen as she interjected a comment to a few of the other men.

"Who are those two? You talk like you know 'em. The one fella I saw earlier was the one tryin' to get a duel in the streets with Darius Carter. The other I ain't seen yet."

Catherine Hays Cox:
Katy nodded at Logan's acceptance of her offer with a smile that went all the way to her eyes. "I do need someone ta watch my back, yeah. Thanks, Logan."

She looked over toward Jackie Wells, then back to Logan. "Jackie's story was...a lot to swallow. But I'm inclined ta do like ya have. Trust it fer now. It'd be nice ta get her ta Austin so they could hear what she had ta say, though that don't look likely ta happen soon. As fer Janet Weiss....that's the other reason I'm here. Pursuin' Elmira Whateley who, as you say, is wanted fer questionin'. Course if she's rotten ta the core like ya say, mebbe best ta simply put that particular case ta rest."

Katy looked over at James Wilder when Logan asked his question, then back to the Marshal. "Fella I know's named James Wilder. He's a bounty hunter, and a purty good one at that. Met him in Amarillo while we were both huntin' a fella named Pete Hutter. That fella in the bandages? Seems ta be Marshal Wilder, a lawman in Arizona and one o' James' family that was killed by Darius Carter. Glad ta see he's with the SPADA now, though I gotta say he's a long way from home." Of course so was the Kingsnake, but he was always travelling a bit more, anyway.

She looked over at Logan and pulled out a copy of the Epitaph that she had purchased earlier in the day. "As fer that duel, ya heard o' the Wild Bunch?" She showed Logan the article about them. "I'd heard rumors they've been workin' with Carter in these parts. I don't imagine Carter's showin' up alone in the middle o' Deadwood. He'll have a plan ta get out. And it's prolly gonna include these folks. If my hunch is right, that means we gotta chance ta take 'em all down."

Jackie Wells:
Katy sees Jackie watching the pair of them. She's not terribly far away, after all.

"Ahem. My ears are burnin' a bit." She says to Logan. "'Puttin' paid.' To someone in custody at the time. You're startin' to sound like Zeke. Don't think for a second I like that little snake, but she wasn't 'runnin' around.' You find her doin' shit outside a jail cell, by all means feel free to turn her head into a canoe."

She looks over at the Wilder brothers and Lonefeather. "Wilder and his partner were part of the posse that Bullock and I put together to stop the cult gunnin' for him. Jack McCall was part o' that posse, too, 'cause he was the only one who knew where they was hidin'."

"Wait." Wild Bill says. He looks over at Jackie. "Where's McCall now?" His fingers curl over his empty holsters.

Jackie winces. "Yeeeeeaaaaaah. That's another long story. I'll tell it at the mint, 'cause it ain't the only issue around."

James Wilder:
James just shakes his head at all the talking, he hadn't quite expected all these people to be around when he and Jimmy had headed out.

OOC: Where is everyone? Lots of talking and I'm not sure who I'm supposed to actually be listening to ...

((OOC: So here is all the different conversation threads for the Woolly Buffalo crew. I'm just waiting on active motions to action, rather than statements of intent))

Chapter 6.1.2: Auld Lang Syne ((Woolly Buffalo))

"In custody," he scoffed once it had become apparent that Jackie had been listening in to their conversation, despite his attempts to speak quietly to Katy, turning to Jackie.

"Miss Wells, it's clear that you've got a code, and I respect that. But if it can't recognize the difference between what it means to hold an ordinary man or woman in custody, and holding a person that can walk through walls in custody, then it's an outdated code that ain't made for the different times we live in. If you're not willin' to exercise judgment independent from that code, maybe you should consider applyin' that code to the protection of the folks Elmira Whateley kills without thought, and leave me and Katy to our own devices far as the criminal herself is concerned." Of course, he had no idea how he was gonna take down someone that could walk through walls, but he'd figure that part out later.

To Katy he responded, "Yeah, I've heard somethin' about this Wild Bunch. I'll keep my ear to the ground as far as they're concerned and clue you in on anything I find. And if we need, I reckon' we can scrounge up a posse to deal with 'em."

He waited to listen to anything that they had to say, fully expecting Jackie Wells to upbraid him for his take on her approach to the situation. He wasn't about to get into an argument with her over it, so he planned to let her say his piece and then excuse himself.

"If y'all will pardon me a moment, I'd like to have a word with a couple of these gentleman," he said, taking a couple of glasses of whiskey with him.

He stepped up to Wilder and Lonefeather, and gave them a nod. He put the whiskey down in front of them, clearly an offering. "U.S. Marshal Logan West," he said, introducing himself. He looked at Lonefeather. "I met John Turley when I was down in Colorado. Good man," he said, then looking between Lonefeather and Wilder. "I heard you gentlemen talking about Carter. If there was a posse being put together to bring him in, would either of you be interested in taking part? Not saying there is quite yet, but there might be. I'd prefer to do this proper, and it's likely that Carter will rear his ugly head again and I might have to take him down, and I'd like as not rather have you," he referred plainly here to Wilder, "attempting shoot me for doin' my duty. As far as Carter is concerned, our cause is the same, though our motivations may differ."

Chapter 6.1.2: Auld Lang Syne ((Woolly Buffalo))

Katy nodded at Logan's response and his excusing himself to chat with the others. There were a few more things they needed to discuss. Quite a few more, in fact. But they didn't really have time at the moment. Catching up for real would have to wait until later. There was business to attend. But she did add a warning. "Logan, if the Wild Bunch're as well armed as this Epitaph article suggests, well, Carter's only a fraction o' our problem. Bill Doolin, Arkansas Tom, and the resta their merry gang o' hoodlums are trouble with a capital T. Any plans fer Carter better consider the possible involvement o' these folks."

When Logan excused himself, Katy finished the rest of the drink he had given her. "And thanks again fer the drink." The Ranger stood and walked over by Jackie, though kept her ears open for what Logan was discussing with the others. "Ya ain't fully seein' eye ta eye with the Marshal, eh? So what're we gonna find at this Mint?" Katy hadn't even been in town a day, so she had some catching up to do. Fortunately Jackie had filled her in on many of the major players.

Chapter 6.1.2: Auld Lang Syne ((Woolly Buffalo))

James looked the lawman up and down, much as a one might a side of beef at the butcher. "I have no desire to bring him in Marshal, I desire to put him in the ground... well given that many folks don't seems to stay dead these days I'll probably do more than that. You see Carter and his gang killed my father and my brother over there, raped and killed both my mother and sister." He sets a roughly treated coat on the table and lets it fall open to reveal Carter's pistol to all who care to look. He folds the coat back over the pistol, not wanting to advertise it's to those around him. "Now, as you can see I have the bastard's pistol which if you know anything about him, is rather important to him."

Well, now Katy had to throw her two cents worth in. "That pistol ain't zactly an heirloom. Carter took it off Tornado Tom, presumably after killin' the fella. That thing's some kinda relic, but not all o' Carter's impressive power comes from that weapon. Though he's a bit less potent without it. 'Less I miss my guess 'bout that weapon, it'll take 'im at least two days, an' likely a bit more, ta bond with another weapon. That means that the resta today and tomorra are when he's gonna be at his weakest."

Chapter 6.1.2: Auld Lang Syne ((Woolly Buffalo))

Jackie shrugs. "As far as I can tell, Elmira was jailed for conspiracy, theft of government documents, espionage, and some sort of confidential thing by the Texas Rangers and Bayou Vermillion. Don't seem to be any hangin' offenses among that. Nor attempting escape, and you don't dress up like a maid to try and sneak out of a buildin' if you can walk through walls. You find out otherwise, I suppose that changes things, but right now Wild Bill here's the only one I can think of who's that dangerous."

Jackie sighs at Katy. "I reckon we ain't, no." She shrugs. "Exposition, most like. Coot has a story to tell that I reckon all y'all need to hear -- includin' that other marshal and the bounty hunter. Then I tell everyone else what I've told you, and more things I didn't, and then I reckon we figure out which o' the many fires this motley group's going to aim to put out."

She watches the conversation, then looks at the pistol James shows around. She whistles. "Well, damn. That's one o' The Six, ain't it? That explains a few things about that fight."

"Let me give you some advice, friend. Once you've put this Carter down, don't touch that gun. Bury it in the deepest pit you can find. 'Cause the way I hear it, anyone who binds themselves to one o' The Six is fated to a short life, a violent death, and a hot shower in Hell."

Chapter 6.1.2: Auld Lang Syne ((Woolly Buffalo))

In reply to James Wilder (msg # 4):

"I'm sorry to hear that, Mr. Wilder, honestly," he said genuinely. "That havin' been said, now that Carter has openly declared his intention to kill me, I'm permitted to shoot him at need, so while I'd prefer to hang him under the color o' law, I don't think that's the way it's gonna to play out. But if Carter and the Wild Bunch are all mixed up together, thirty guns strong as they are, I might be lookin' to form a posse. And seein' as you got that gun there, I wanted to let you know that when the time comes, I might come to call on you and your friend here."

He turned to Lonefeather. "I didn't catch your name, by the way," he said, offering a hand to the bounty hunter.

When Coot spoke up and they started talking about the First Gun and the Six, he perked up. Logan had always really taken to stories like these. He looked between Katy and the old man. "The First Gun? The Six?"

Chapter 6.1.2: Auld Lang Syne ((Woolly Buffalo))

Katy nodded at Logan's query. "Yup, the six. If that there's one of 'em, Coot's warnin' is a good one."

She looked over at the old man and then continued. "Supposedly The Six were made by men ages ago, in response to the depredations of unfathomable monsters. They was forged from mankind's pain, suffering, and desperation. And supposedly, they contained the power ta remake the world. Accordin' ta rumor, at first they appeared as primitive clubs, marked with red and black magic runes. As the world changed, The Six changed with it. They manifested in new and often more advanced forms, from the bludgeonin' weapons of old ta Templar swords and then ta primitive guns. In any form, it's said they possess unbelievable power and double as keys ta rewrite Creation. Currently, as you can see, they appear as finely-crafted .44 caliber single-action Colt Dragoons with pearl grips, each blessed with unimaginable abilities, includin' unlimited ammo. 'Course they're also cursed. All Six are bound ta their wielders until that person dies, and they burn the hands of an unworthy wielder."

She looked over at the weapon again, then back to Logan.

"According to what I heard:

The First Gun strikes with ungodly force.
The Second Gun spreads the very flames of Perdition.
The Third Gun spreads the flesh-rottin' plagues of ole.
The Fourth Gun calls up and commands the spirits o' the men and women it has slain.
The Fifth Gun grants eternal youth and the ability ta heal from even a fatal wound.
The Sixth Gun speaks ta its wielder, revealin' the past and the future.

But here's the rub. They was forged by hatred and oiled in betrayal, and disaster always follows in their wake. The Rangers consider any of The Six showing up to be a high priority. They've tried to lock The Six away, but it always seems as if those damned weapons find a way back inta the world again, as if they had a will o' their own. And here's one now."

Six guns, no matter how powerful, ain't enough to affect a whole planet. I mean, 'the unholy force of a cannon' ain't more than any other artillery, and Hell, Ghost Rock burns with the flames of Perdition if you believe the rumors, and we use it in all manner of machines."

"Carter had scales growin' out o; his skin." Jackie says. "And even when we started aimin' for his head, he didn't go down. It was only after Katy gummed it up with jelly-jam that he even considered retreatin'. Besides, the rumors don't need to be true. Folk just have to beleive in 'em, and they gain power." She grimaces. Katy nodded at Lonefeather's commentary. "Sure, and knowledge 'bout th' past an' future can't be used ta shape things, eh? But I didn't say them powers're what affects the planet. Said they double as keys. And given the bad mojo 'round 'em, prolly best if we keep that one outta the hands o' any sorta troublemaker."

Katy smirked at Jackie. "Ye'd make a good Ranger. I keep thinkin' you an' I gotta get ta Austin sometime." Katy knew it might be a while before that happened.

When the group seemed ready to move, Katy put her sombrero back on her head. She lifted a hand to give the Kingsnake a little wave. "See ya round, Jericho. Think 'bout what I said, eh? Lotta folk down south'd appreciate hearin' from ya 'gain."
