Chapter 6.3: There Will Come A Reckoning ((Deadwood))

((ooc: Here goes nothing...))

Matt lined up in a low stance, set his aim, and put the cue ball on the left side of the 1. The rack-up broke like a dropped plate and he was satisfied to see the 15 drop. Matt stood and clicked his tongue. He took his time selecting his next shot, and put another ball in the corner pocket with an air of elan.

His third shot was not as lucky. He hadn't given himself anywhere to go, and satisfied himself with attempting a shot that at least limited Sebastian's choices. He pegged the 12 and it hooked right, missing the pocket by a good half-a-foot. Matt straightened up again and re-chalked his cue.

"Your shot. What do you want to know?"

OOC: 5 on Agility + 4 from a Blue Chip = 9, a success and raise, meaning I drop 2 balls, and miss my third.

10:25, Today: Matthew Broaddale rolled 4 using 1d6+2, rerolling max with rolls of 2. Blue chip. 10:25, Today: Matthew Broaddale rolled 5,1 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 5,1. Corner pocket...Agility.

Chapter 6.3: There Will Come A Reckoning ((Deadwood))

Zek looked up at the rain clouds. He was clearly not worried about getting sick, but he liked his hat and it might get soaked. He glanced over at the stubborn brave, and realized the union troops where not likely to want to wander around looking for natives in the pouring rain. Not to mention the other big fella over there was making him itch something fierce-again, both literally and metaphorically.

He starts to head inside the Saloon, hoping that Wells would get here soon.

Chapter 6.3: There Will Come A Reckoning ((Deadwood))

In reply to Matthew Broaddale (msg # 4):

"Alright. Tell me this." The shadow gives Matt a feral grin. "Do you want to know why your superiors tried to kill you with a poisoned letter in your drop box the other day?"

While letting Matt ponder that, he turns his attention back to the game, and managed to avoid matt's clever maneuvering, getting the 1 and the 4 down before being stuck and having to hit the ball away from what would have been an easy strike that would also have sunk one of Matt's balls.

"Your question, then."

((OOC: Unfortuantely, A 9 isn't enough.

00:35, Today: Secret Roll: Mr. Roger Sebastian Whateley rolled 2,4 using d8,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 2,4.  Spellcasting.
00:36, Today: Secret Roll: Mr. Roger Sebastian Whateley rolled 1 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 1.  Red Chip.
00:36, Today: Secret Roll: Mr. Roger Sebastian Whateley rolled 6,2,4 using d8,d6,d6, rerolling max with rolls of 6,2,4.  White Chip Reroll.

That leaves him with a total of 10, which is just enough to beat your 9. It does cost him 2 chips, though.

What he's doing is casting Analyze Foe on you to get an edge over you in this game.

quote:
Analyze Foe
• Rank: Novice
• Power Points: 1 – 2
• Range: Smarts x 2
• Duration: 3 (1/round)
• Trappings: Mystical sense, spiritual advice, gestalt knowledge.

Knowledge is power. Being able to judge the strength of a foe before engaging him in combat can be highly advantageous.

The character makes an arcane skill roll opposed by the target’s Spirit. On a success, he gains a +1 bonus to Trait rolls to directly affect the target, and the target suffers a –1 penalty to Trait rolls to directly affect the caster. With a raise, the effect is increased to +2 and –2 for both. In addition, for 2 Power Points, a success allows the caster to learn of a single Immunity, Invulnerability, or Weakness of the target (if one exists), and a raise allows the knowledge of two.

Now, since he has access to this power because he's a member of the Enlightened Society of the Weeping Moon, he gets a special trapping that allows him to also learn Hindrances or up to one secret thing about you. But he already knows things about you (for reasons we've discussed long ago) so he's mostly just doing this for the +1 bonus he gets to his rolls against you.

12:19, Today: Mr. Sebastian's Shadow rolled 5,5 using d6+1,d6+1, rerolling max with rolls of 4,4.  Gambling.

12:20, Today: Mr. Sebastian's Shadow rolled 3 using 1d6, rerolling max with rolls of 3.  Red Chip.

Total of 8. He sinks 2 balls himself.

Chapter 6.3: There Will Come A Reckoning ((Deadwood))

Matt blanched, and scowled. That was not a question he had expected. He leaned down to get the lay of the land.

"That is an odd use of your first question," he said, "My honest answer is yes, although I don't know if I would call it poisoning me. Simple accident."

He stared at the balls he wanted to sink in turn, working out the spin. He saw it. He looked up at the Whateley's shadow.

"What's the best way to shut down your ability to sling hoodoo, Roger?"

He moved around, aligned himself, and put the 10-ball into the corner with enough English for the cue ball to come back and send 12 hurtling across two feet of table into the side-pocket. He grinned, then watched as the cue ball rolled into the corner pocket for a scratch.

"Damn. Good shot though."

Chapter 6.3: There Will Come A Reckoning ((Deadwood))

Zeke's ever-keen eyes certainly notice the shadowy figure in the top hat playing pool with that marshal from earlier.

"Don't give me a reason to use it in the first place. Or else be smarter or have a stronger will than you have currently. But then, we all have our limitations. Speaking of which, one of those annoyances we spoke on earlier just walked in. He's likely going to come straight at me, and I have a feeling you're going to want to finish this game." He seems to be deliberately avoiding rhetorical questions, annoyingly enough.

((OOC: Yup, that'll do it.

Mr. Sebastian attempts to get psychological on Matt, using a Taunt Test of Wills before taking his shot.

Zek sure enough spotted him, but he then noticed how his form seemed a bit...off. It reminded him a bit of what happened to Nicodemus back in the Saloon. Zek figured he would not have the guts to call him out to his face, and certainly not want to risk his precious Whateley hide. Granted normally when the family of mages comes after Zek, a lot of innocent people end up dying at their hands. So this time Zek put on his shotglass Monocle to see where the shadow truly was coming from. That way at least he could keep the body count low. He does not say anything to Maddox yet, as he is busy trying to locate his target.

Meanwhile, the shotglass reveals a faint trail away from the shadow man, one that Zeke could follow. He also sees the shadow man wave to him. "Ah! There you are--I knew you'd show up eventually. You're like a bad penny. Well? Come on over. I want to discuss something with you. Something that, I hope will be of mutual benefit to both of us, and I want you to know that I made an honest attempt at diplomacy. In case things should go poorly for you in the future."

Chapter 6.3: There Will Come A Reckoning ((Deadwood))

"That may be so. I still will not drink." Kills Iron Horse says, but she does sit down. She shakes her head. "Yellow Hair did not walk through our lands unscathed. The Lakota met him on the river. Red Cloud and his warriors." She sighs. "They shot ten thousand arrows at Yellow Hair and his Long Knives. I was there. Yellow Hair had more men than Red Cloud, fought them off. Raven killed Black Kettle. We went to the Holy Mountain. There, the Lakota wicasas speak with each other. Some call for war. Some call for a dance, to make the whites leave our lands forever. We come here, to this place, to find The Woman Who Remembers The Future. She has words to speak. Important words. A vision of what is to be, if we fail."

The Shadow Man shrugs. "Temper, temper. My answer was both honest and complete. I'm sorry if you were hoping for some easy way to cripple my workings, but there isn't any. That's why the 'hoodoo' I do is so effective. You don't have any background in Aetheric Theory. You've never studied Hoyle. It's like asking one of these savages here to perform trigonometry." He waves in Walks The Night's general direction. "I suppose the answer you'd really want is 'find someone who knows what they're doing.' Without that, there is nothing you can do to shut me down."

The shadow man turns his attention back to the table, and neatly sinks the 5. "As for my question...do you want to know why you can't remember anything clearly since the Houston affair?" He then sinks 2 and 7, though he scratches on the 7.

The shadow man leans back with a smug smile. "Take your time. It might change the trajectory of your question to me."

((OOC: Well, you aren't in combat rounds. If you want to take an action before making your roll, you can do so freely. Just wait for the resolution of one action before taking the next.

With the Crit Fail, that means Mr. Sebastian has thrown you off your game. In addition to the +2 bonus he gets on this shot, you have a -2 penalty on your next shot unless you can counter it somehow.

15:21, Today: Mr. Sebastian's Shadow rolled 6,4 using d6+3,d6+3, rerolling max with rolls of 3,1.  Gambling. That's a fairly poor roll...Mr. Sebastian spends a GM white chip for a reroll.

15:21, Today: Mr. Sebastian's Shadow rolled 7,14 using d6+3,d6+3, rerolling max with rolls of 4,(6+5)11.  White Chip Reroll.

Matt fumed like a caged animal for a moment as he watched the table, then stood stock still at Sebastian's question. It was disconcerting to hear the question he was going to ask come from the Shadow's mouth.

He looked the table round. He wasn't behind by much. A lucky streak and he could probably take it. But Matt didn't feel lucky. He felt trapped.

He glanced over at Art, at Zek, at Maddox. He looked back at Zek, and thought hard. He turned back to Art.

"You much of a pool player, Art? What do you think of the green as it stands? You think I got a chance against Roger here?"

((OOC: I would like to roll Knowledge (Occult) for Matt's knowledge of Whateley magics vs. Hucksterism vs other types of hoodoo. Thing is, Matt HAS studied. I'd like to take what he (Sebastian)'s said about his powers and compare them to other types of magic I know.

That is some lack of respect for them boys' mamas, I tell you.  Least make 'em useful - put 'em in a pie! Aheheh.""

Daisy sips her beer. "So this Raven fella - he working with Custer?"

She looks curiously from Kills Iron Horse to the noticeably white men she came in with then back again. "You for the war or the dance? Or jes' whoever's winning whilst the getting's good?"

"Ha! Ahehheehee...ah, why not? Wells'll be right proud y'all figure she's got a holy vision. The Cheyenne nods at the introduction. "Kills Iron Horse." She replies. Kills Iron Horse shrugs a bit. "We were prisoners. I did not see."

At the question about Raven, KIH shakes her head emphatically. "No. Raven does not work with white men. He manipulates them into fighting themselves. He killed Black Kettle because Black Kettle could speak words of peace, and because he knew the dance."

At the question about which one she's for, the Cheyenne is quiet. She absently taps her fingers against the bar. "I think..." She says, the hesitates. Then she nods to herself. "I think I want to see all palefaces gone from these hills. You do not belong here. This place is sacred, and you damage it, looking for your screaming rocks. I want you gone. If the dance works, then it works. If not, then it must be war. But I would see the dance tried first."

"You have heard her speak, then?" Kills seems quite interested in this. "What does she say? What battles are these?"

OOC: Technically it's got a range of greater than touch, but in this case the power will pass to Matt when he grasps Art's staff.
