Out of Character Chat

Brother Nuric, priest of Athena, gathered his traveling gear for his journey.  He was very excited to be finally leaving his small fishing village to try to finish his father's quest.  Nuric's father had left the family when Nuric was a child, claiming that he'd had a vision of an ancient artifact, The Orb of Understanding, supposedly made by Athena herself to help mortals understand each other and help people.  Nuric's mother had thought the man crazed, and Nuric had wondered if it were just some excuse to abandon his family, something the Athena worshipping town would normally frown upon.  Following in the tradition of the priesthood, Nuric had settled into a life as a librarian and researcher at the town library and temples, helping travelers and locals study lore and divine meanings in omens.  It was a lonely life, and Nuric had invented an imaginary friend, a magic owl named Doctor Whoo, to talk to.  A habit only his mother knew about, which, given her reaction, was probably a good thing.  Nuric had always longed to see the world described in his books, or in stories told by sailors who visited his town, but never had the nerve, and was content to dream and wallow in his little routine.  Then, one fateful day, a sailor was selling faded manuscripts written in some strange language.  Nuric, out of stubborn curiosity, worked to translate what he was sure was meaningless drivel or perhaps random beer recipes.  Then he was shocked to discover references to the Orb of Understanding, and a goddess that could only be Athena, both in some far away land.  Nuric was in shock, seeing that his father, at least very possibly, hadn't abandoned their family.  Perhaps he really had been given a quest by the Goddess herself to find this artifact.  And finding the manuscript seemed proof that Nuric himself was chosen as well to do the same.  His mind made up, Nuric said goodbye to his weeping mother, and to his small hometown, and headed aboard a ship sailing on the morning tide.
