Ladies in the Pool: Genders in Gaming

This is a thread request regarding genders in gaming (especially females playing RPGs). I'm opening it up a *little bit* more than the original request, and would like to expand it to other hobbies/clubs as well.

OK, here is my question on this subject: Why do so many male gamers and especially the gaming industry do everything within their power to exclude women from this great hobby and then act all surprised when their Wives/Girlfriends don't want to participate?

Re: Ladies in the Pool: Genders in Gaming

Can you give a specific example? I can only think of one on my own, wherein a person playing a hard sci-fi game said he didn't want the science dumbed down 'in order to cater to women'. The implication wasn't that women were specifically excluded, just that they wouldn't be interested in a hard sci-fi game.
