Re: Rules Questions

By lowering Love.

You can ONLY move steps in Values around by challenging one and leaving it at the lower rating to raise something else.

Values are untouchable with Growth.

---

Correct they can be shuffled but there can never be more die steps added.

This is part of the whole mechanics your priorities might change but you can only muster so much for each value.

You could excel at one at D12 but most likely have one or two at D4

Re: Rules Questions

Ok when Leads are in contests with each other they give plot points to eachother when they do something that costs plot points.

Like using a special effect, or when buying a complication someone else makes.

Or sometimes the use of certain Distinctions.

In reply to Watchtower (msg # 11):

Still a little confused.  So Zoey did something that cast a Plot point.

And should I be believing her, being Big Hearted?

Re: Rules Questions

Actually that IS something Zoey could have done handed you a plot point to call upon your big heartedness.

She rolled a complication that would normally and happily go into trouble and I would hand Zoey a plot point.

OR you could purchase her complication to use against her in the contest.

Re: Rules Questions

You would be the one giving Zoey a plot point if you wanted to use that D6 against her.

Re: Rules Questions

Oh, so a "complication" is like a critical fumble in a way, when you roll a one?
Though not necessarily that severe, I gather.

Re: Rules Questions

It's used for flavor text, to advance the plot and to give little edges from time to time.

For example say we were doing a car chase.

Someone rolls a 1 on a D6.  This can potentially be a complication for them.
Anyone can declare what the complication is. Though if it is a contest between leads the person challenging them might BUY that complication so they can use it as a die in the contest.

So while the person who rolled the 1 might win, the other person might pay a plot point and say. Hey there is heavy traffic making it hard to get away. *Now they could roll that D6 in the contest.*

Or they might say you get away but some *Clue* (The complication) falls out of the vehicle as you speed off.

Complications don't have to be bought sometimes they just go into the trouble pool and I pay a plot point to the people who roll them. It helps ratchet up the tension in the game.  When Trouble or Features that are working against the leads roll complications you dont have to pay a plot point for them. Though it does lower the trouble pool giving the characters a bit of a break.

Re: Rules Questions

Stress I handle in a streamlined fashion to help speed the game along.

Normally if you win a contest and your opponent doesn't give in they receive stress.

Under normal non streamlined rules the same dice used in the contest sans complication dice are rolled to see what the stress is.  Instead of requiring a totally separate roll I simply look at your last roll the one you won the contest with and look for your highest die roll.

For example you won in an argument with someone with the roll.

D8, D6, D6, and a D10 complication.

Your roll was: 7, 5, 2, 9.

Well I don't use the complication die so the 9 from the D10 is removed. the highest roll was that 7 from the D8 so stress would be D8 Angry or Insecure stress most likely.

Now if you won the contest and BEAT your opponent by 5 or more you could stress them out. They would take the D8 stress and be stressed out of the scene.
Maybe they get pissed and walk off. Or sit there in self doubt and indecision while the rest of the scene goes on around them.

Note you don't always have to stress out an opponent if you don't wish to. Sometimes it makes the game more exciting or fun not too.

Now I know Rory has thought Oh no I can get stressed out easy I am at D8 or D10 stress in some area.

The way stress works is like this.

Say you have D8 Angry from that argument up above.
Then someone else stresses you with angry stress and there high stress die is a D6 the stress die would go from D8 to D10. Rising one step.
Infact any stress D8 or less would push that stress up one die step.

Of course if the stress rolled was D10 then stress would be D10. Or if the highest die in that stress is D12 your stress would go from D8 straight to D12.

Once at D12 in stress in an area if that particular stress is pushed above D12 even a tiny little D4 stress can do this you are stressed out.

Certain distinctions and abilities can modify stress. This is declared after the contest is done.

So Allura with Vicious say did a D8 Afraid stress to someone she could use her D4 trigger for Vicious to raise that D8 to D10.

Likewise when Zoey uses her trident she can use the FX bonus from having the trident to raise the stress she deals. She can raise injured and afraid stress.

While someone like Rory can spend plot points from say his Regeneration Ability special effect to heal up damage, even healing it right up after it was dealt.

Certain Distinctions allow you to lower stress others to raise stress.  Just look at your distinctions and special effects from Abilities to see what you can do.  While I make suggestions whenever I can. I can't always keep on top of everything your characters can do.

Re: Rules Questions

If I understand correctly, when rolling to reduce stress:

- The 'healer' rolls.
- The 'patient' rolls all stress die.
- If successful the lower die is removed?

What happens when the patient rolls a 1?

Re: Rules Questions

Actually the healer can target any stress not just the lowest.
Rolling a 1 really doesn't matter unless someone rolls again and grabs it as a complication.

Re: Rules Questions

That's something I have been wondering about actually Susan.

Can people still attempt to heal someone if they are targeting something that isn't exactly at the source of the stress? For example, Susan telling Rory that she will always be there for him and trying to distract Rory while he is concerned about what he will do if he looses control.

What if someone doesn't want to be healed? For example, if they are angry and don't want to let the situation go.

Re: Rules Questions

That sounds like another contest between them.

Kind of like:  "Contest: I don't want to make up yet" or something like that.

Re: Rules Questions

Yes sounds like a contest to me a very odd one you would roll normally and your stress but still only the two highest dice count.

Re: Rules Questions

When rolling for growth, can we only aim for a single ability, relationship per level? I have quite a few die this level so I was considering splitting my die (possibly between Jeremy and an ability/distinction).

Sadly one boost per episode to a single thing.

There are variant rules for gaining multiple things but we go through episodes very quickly.

Yes it lets the other leads and features have some clue (As well as the audience).
So that heal attempts can be made by friends or enemies might exploit the stress etc.

It is mostly to let others know there is something going on.
