Re: Fearless Morning

As the unit quickly reorganised, Sandi-Lee sought out Miller and said, "Uh, Captain. I've done a quick check of fuel in our tanks and it doesn't look good, Sir. The Hummer and the Soviet vehicles are OK because of the gasoline. We can share fuel around a bit and get them to run for about a hundred klicks. The tracks will be bone dry in thirty-five klicks though and we don't have any way to brew more."

Re: Fearless Morning

Miller frowned, "Thanks, Henry," he replied, "I'd hoped the tracks would get a bit further. With luck the gasoline fuelled vehicles will just make the highlands but it'll be tight. The tracks will make it to the reservoir dam but no further."

He sighed, "At that point we either find more fuel or abandon them. Tell all vehicle drivers to practise maximum fuel efficiency."

He moved along to Lieutenant Stuart and said, "As you're scouting I want you to maintain a lookout for fuel sources for our tracks. I really don't want to lose the lift capacity of the M113 or the firepower of the Bradley. If you can find any food sources too that would be great."

Re: Fearless Morning

In reply to Pvt Emilio Ramirez (msg # 10):

"Sir, as you'll see here" 2Lt Winters said, holding a paper automotive road map in his right hand, "Kraków is south of here, not northeast and as far as the MUTT goes, I ju.."

The junior officer and commander of Alligator turned and looked over his shoulder instinctively as a series of tank cannon rippled off behind him. The almost immediate sounds of the exploding 125mm shells told the soldiers that what their enemy was shooting at was very close to them as they moved ever closer. From the sound of it, the enemy tanks were firing from less than 1000m away; the closest they had been since the NATO soldiers crossed to the northern side of the river.

"I just don't think we have the time" Winters said, after turning back towards the Captain.

"Gordon's driving for now," Miller replied, "he's the track's original driver. He's been through the wringer and come out well. If you check the assignments, they're all there. We'll shake it down as we get to know the others better."

He looked over at Winters, "Krakow is south, you're right. So is a Soviet stop line waiting to hit anyone that travels south. The route I've suggested is the only one not likely to get us butchered in the next hour. After that, we'll have to see."

[Private to 1LT James Stuart: From standing on top of the BRDM, your character can see dark shapes on the south side of the river moving towards the battle group.]

Without further discussion, the battle group dispersed, as troops, NCOs and officers alike set out with their assigned tasks.

Re: Fearless Morning

Miller made a quick check on each vehicle to make sure that they were aware that the first checkpoint was the village of Kobierno. The tiny convoy would head up the valley as Stuart's BDRM scouted the route for potential danger.

Once he was sure that everyone was mounted up and ready to go he stood up in the open roof of the M113 and waved the column forward.

Battle At Ruined Bridge

In reply to 2LT Jack Winters (msg # 21):

The scout given his orders, the Soviet-made scout car commanded by 1LT Stuart moved off in the direction of Kobierno, which was in a northeasterly direction. Cpt Miller mounted the M113 as 2Lt Winters set about moving the MUTT 50m more to the north of the river to get it behind some rubble from an old store whose contents had long since been picked clean.

As it happened, the fears of the young Bradley Commander were to be proven correct. The group had arranged in convoy on the north side of the river just east of the last ruined bridge in convoy order. Engines were running as the small combat group prepared to move.

On the other side of the river less than 100m away, partially obscured from the ruined buildings on the south side of the river and the smoke from fires and tank cannon, an enemy 'heavy recon' element consisting of two BRDM-3s, two BMP-2s, and a T-80 ERA came to a stop as they probed north.

The enemy Soviet tank ran afoul of some rubble as it pointed northeast. A second later the tank's commander, quickly followed by the gunner got out. The two shouted commands to the tank's driver, still seated at his station behind the controls. After a few tries without success, the two tank crewmen and began pulling at some iron and rock rubble bits that were stopping the tank tread's movement.

At the same time, the BMPs who were behind the tank to the west 50-75m came to a stop. The smaller, faster scout cars came right past them and drove to the river's edge, pointing north.

"Gunner, TOW, BMPs, fire at will" 2Lt Winters said into his CVC. "Keep engaging armored vehicles but do NOT engage that tank. The rest of you, DISMOUNT on me."

In Jack's mind, the crew of the T-80 had made a fatal error, and he was going to make them pay for it.

"Set up a base of fire here" he ordered the others when they were at the edge of the concrete wall facing south. Beyond the wall there was a meter drop, then the shallow river, then the enemy on the other side.
