Nereid:
[OOC: The difficulty of analyzing the artifact is 5--it's a very strange item. That gives you a Moderate Success. What you can tell just by looking: It appears to be neolithic, based on the workmanship and the tool marks; carved from stone with tools made from harder stone. That would mean it might from as far back as 10,000 BC, but if he's right about it coming from the Black Sea region, that area wasn't settled until 6500 BC. Most of the neolithic sites around there are along the Don and Dneiper Rivers, implying that the people lived at least partly as fishermen. Almost all neolithic sculpture is of people--usually female figures. There are a few examples of animals or even mythological creatures that are part animal, part human--but this isn't like any of those...]

Ian:
[OOC: Did you intentionally call her 'Nereid' in front of Taggart, or did you mean to use her 'secret identity' name?]

Todd:
[Well, Taggart thinks it sank, anyway. :) Ian and Detective Smith know better, but they're the only ones right now who do.]

In reply to Amm-Fibian (msg # 18):

Ah...so what is your plan Taggart? I need a lab for dating, a library for research, and probably a high speed Internet connection, do you have all that or am I to not only compromise my ethics but illegally use the University's resources as well?

She didn't mean to sound so curt. She needed Taggart to trust her, oh wait let's see what he is thinking of....

Duh, telepath. She hated  prying into people's minds when it wasn't an emergency...but Taggart is playing close to the vest and she needed to know what he was hiding.

OOC: reaching out with telepathy, I will also link Ian in as I poke around since he is looking for something as well.

Telepathy 6 and I need this so I am willing to go for a major success here

I am tagging my surfing archeologist aspect. She wants to outwit this guy and get the object into a museum so she needs to know what he is thinking.

So here we go,

08:56, Today: Nereid rolled 3,4 using D6,d6. If I could read his mind.

3-4=-1

5 with at least +2= 7 for starters with 4 more determination points as needed.

Taggart smiles in a smarmy way. "I'm sure the University allows members of the faculty to use it's facilities for their own independent research. Otherwise, what's tenure for?"

[OOC: Just 1 Determination to use Determined Effort and get a Major Success with that roll. But you're looking deeper than just surface thoughts, right? 1 more Determination for the Mind Probe stunt.]

::Memory of a deal in a dark alley in Chechnya, buying the artifact with a suitcase full of rubles::Memory of watching grainy video recorded underwater; the artifact being uncovered::Memory of reading newspaper headlines in Russian; <<Navy Diver Commits Suicide>> <<Authorities Deny Reports Of 'Haunted Warship'>>::Memory of research on other Neolithic carvings, sculptures, wall paintings; nothing matching the artifact::

[OOC: If there's anything specific you're looking for beyond the above, just let me know.]

OOC: I will pay the 1 Determination (3 left)  for Mind Probe and try to find out the name of the people he got the artifact from and what he plans to with it (if the plans are specific like sell it [here] to [whom] but he may just be planning to make money which is obvious but that is the risk I take)

Nereid:
You push a little deeper into Taggart's mind, following the thoughts linked to the artifact.

::Memory of Taggart addressing the man in the alley in Chechnya as Senior Lieutenant Makariy Zverev. Taggart recognizing the Russian Navy uniform.::Daydream of a future trip to Hong Kong to sell the artifact to a mysterious woman known as the Feather Empress.::

Ian:
The granola bars are delicious (you think). At least, your host body is salivating as you eat them.

Todd:
[OOC: What does a 'Resentful Outcast' do, exactly, in the office of a wealthy and handsome explorer/adventurer when nobody is paying much attention? Consider this a really open-ended Compel. Gain 1 Determination if you cause a little trouble/havok/annoyance. :)]

Outside, Senior Detective Smith had made it halfway around the block-long warehouse. The front of the building is as nondescript as the back. Loading docks and a pair of huge roll-up doors face the street--all heavily padlocked.

Ian stuffs all of the granola bars into his mouth, one after another, chewing and crunching loudly, but otherwise sitting very still.
When anyone looks at him, annoyed perhaps, he comments "These are quite delicious."

Todd, more than a little bored by all the talk about artifacts and expeditions, pulls up a chair near the mahogany sideboard. He stares out the window as he absent-mindedly flicks one of the locks with his right index finger.

He's also forgotten just how strong his super-powered body has become, and rips the lock off.

If flies between Nereid and Taggart, shortly followed by a KLANG!!! as it smashes through the side of a metal filing cabinet.

Todd freezes, eyes wide. "Uhhhhhhh. Sorry?"

[I expect that qualifies. :)

I'd assume I could just narrate something like this, but if I need to roll I managed a +2 with a strength of 8, for a total of 10.

Hmmmm... I may have ripped the sideboard door off at the same time!]

Hmmm... He is on the football team... Anyway, I need to use my lab and the library.

May I take it or do you want to  bring it over sometime?

Re: E1S6 - Dr. Taggart's office - Nereid, Ian
The moment of internal calm with Nereid inside Taggart's mind is shattered by the ricocheting lock. There's a sudden silence following the deafening klang, broken only by the belated thump of the mahogany door falling to the office carpet.

Taggart leans down, fingering the jagged hole in the side of the filing cabinet. He straightens and looks suspiciously all of his guests. "He must be a joy to have around the antiquities at the University. You can take it with you--as long as he doesn't handle it." Taggart says dryly to Dr. Maheloni. Turning toward Todd, he spots the fallen door and the open cabinet behind it, and his eyes go wide with alarm.

"Ahem. Well, since I mustn't keep you from your research--and since many of my mementos are precious to me--I'll see you out." He hastily snatches up the damaged door and props it back into place.

Todd:
As he does so, you get a quick peek inside the cabinet space you accidentally opened. There are piles of irregular gold coins in there, and a small gold idol in the shape of a squatting man. The coins might be Spanish pieces-of-eight; the style of the little statue looks South American. There must be twenty pounds of gold in there!

Ian stands up, mouth full of granola, briefcase falling to the floor, and sputters "By the Great White Whale!"

OOC: Since Ian is much better at mystery solving than I, I wish to make a roll to put some pieces together.
You rolled 4,2 using d6,d6 ((4,2))
2 + 9 intellect + 2 Investigation = 13 Total

Re: E1S6 - Dr. Taggart's office - Nereid, Ian
Amm-Fib'ian:
Ian has been linked into Nereid's mental probing of Taggart. He's seen the bits and pieces of Taggart's memory, and reconstructs things thusly:

[OOC: Cue CSI-style mindscape-montage for Ian!]
Taggart was contacted by a Russian Naval officer, Sr. Lt. Makariy Zverev, who had something to sell--something sketchy, or the deal wouldn't have had to go down in a dark alley. Taggart got the artifact, and a video recording of it being dug up from the seabed in the Black Sea. Taggart's initial research showed that the diver who dug it up committed suicide, and that there was a suppressed news story about the ship he and Zverev served on being 'haunted'. After that, his research dead-ended: There are no known Neolithic artifacts that look like it. It's sketchy provenance means that he can't sell it to any legitimate dealer. But; if Dr. Maheloni authenticates it, that's the foundation of a new provenance, and it's unique appearance makes it essentially priceless.

The gold in the cabinet is strong evidence that Taggart is involved in the illegal antiquities trade. Ian is also aware (thanks to his interaction with the Multinational Investigation Bureau) that the so-called 'Feather Empress' is a collector of ultra-rare historical artifacts--usually stolen, and usually ones that have some hint of supernatural legend about them. Even if Dr. Maheloni can't authenticate the artifact, Taggart can leverage the Russian newspaper accounts to craft an enticing legend as a sales pitch.

Either way, Taggart stands to make a great deal of money.

Todd:
Taggart thumps the broken door with the heel of his hand, jamming it closed (at least temporarily). "Not everything you see is real, kid. Plenty of forgeries around..."

[OOC: No, no missed connections. :) Ian's case is the season arc-plot (for Ian anyway), Southern Shore is the episode plot, and the arifact...call it the 'b' plot for this episode, or foreshadowing for the next episode, if you like. Tropic Thunder was the in media res opener (and a future plot hook).]

Nereid carries the strange artifact, re-wrapped in it's heavy cloth covering, out into the bright Hawai'ian sunshine. The three of you arrive back at Detective Smith's Impala just as he returns from his stroll around the warehouse perimeter. "Whatever they keep in there, it's locked up tight as a drum. Doesn't look like there's much traffic in or out, either." He remarks. "So, did you find out anything useful? And why is he covered in granola crumbs?"

"Because Granola is delicious Detective. I would very much like to investigate Southern Shore now, and to hear Nereid's thoughts on Taggart and this artifact."

Ian looks around and spots an old, gruff looking man on the street.

"First, I will need a new identity."

OOC: You rolled 3,5 using d6,d6 ((3,5)).
-2 + Possession 6 = Total 4 to possess gruff old man.

[OOC: You've got the old man--although your hold is tenuous in his case. With a Moderate Success, you'll have to re-roll your control next page. A page of conversation is a vague duration though... Hey! Maybe, when you've only had a Moderate Success, some of the host's personality leaks through. You could refer to Todd as a 'young whippersnapper' or something. :)]

The granola-coated businessman blinks slowly several times, and wanders away looking confused.

Detective Smith turns to the gruff fellow who just walked up, and quirks his head at the businessman's receding back. "He gonna be OK? He's not about to walk out into traffic or anything, right?" He pulls out a pocket notebook, and flips through pages. "I've got the address for Southern Shore here--and yeah, they're a lead we need to follow up." He sighs, and unlocks the Impala's doors. "Since when did I become chauffeur to superheroes?" He mutters under his breath.

Re: E1S6 - Dr. Taggart's office - Nereid, Ian
"I dunno about what was in his head, but I know what I saw in that drawer. A lot of gold coins and some sort of gold statue. I figure that'd have to be worth - uh..."

Todd screws up his forehead as he tries to do the maths in his head. As he does this his body begins to change shape. His highly-muscled body seems to atrophy, and his skull stretches into a dome-like shape.

"Assuming the coins were Spanish doubloons or equivalent, we'd expect a typical weight of 6.77 grams for pre-nineteenth century doubloons, or 0.218 troy ounces per coin.

Estimating perhaps 1,000 coins, and based on dimensions and typical formwork and densties another 2.25 kilograms for the statue, that would give us just over nine kilograms - 9.072 - roughly 20 imperial pounds, or 24.3 troy pounds.

So at current values of $1672.49 this would give us a value, in bullion alone, of $488,367. And eight cents."

His body morphs back into its normal Todd form.

"At a guess."
