E1S6 - Dr. Taggart's office - Nereid, Ian
Taggart's office is near Nimitz Bay, in the warehouse district near the commercial port. It looks like rental office space, a half-story at the back of a three-story warehouse building. Three flights of external metal stairs lead up to a plain door with a smoked glass window and a small plaque; "Ancient Seas Antiques".

Inside is a reception area with a nautical theme. There's a ship's wheel, a few framed photographs of a tanned man with a dark mustache, either aboard ships or dressed in diving gear, and an antique binnacle compass on the walls. A plump Hawai'ian woman sits behind the receptionist's desk, typing on a computer.

"Good afternoon! How can I help you?" She says in a perky voice.

OOC: I would like to possess a man in a business suit with a briefcase on the way to this office.
You rolled 5,4 using D6,d6 ((5,4)).

In reply to Amm-Fibian (msg # 2):

I am Dr. Mahelona from University of Hawai'i AC, and Mr. Taggart is expecting me.

Well he is isn't exactly expecting me, but he has been trying like crazy to see me, and leaving messages and calls. So he isn't expecting me...but he does want to see me
.

Looks at Amm-Fibian's host

and...This...is....Ian....my...colleague...

Crap..that sounded so totally like I was trying to not say we are a couple...but at that moment all I could think was "this is Ian he is a fish detective guy that has jumped into the body of this nigh random man...and that would've freaked her out,,,Nereid thinks as she gives an awkward smile.

In reply to Nereid (msg # 3):

Ian nods and looks around the office, trying to get a feel for anything special or out of the ordinary.

OOC: In case you need a roll.
You rolled 2,4 using d6,d6 ((2,4))
-2, I think this would be Intellect since it's analysis, so +9, and then +2 for Investigation.
Total +9, Analyze Office.

Re: E1S6 - Dr. Taggart's office - Nereid, Ian
Ian:
[OOC: You note that none of the photos of Taggart on the walls appear to have been taken aboard the ship he was on he night you appeared. In fact, no two of them appear to have been taken aboard the same ship. Taggart obviously gets around.]

Nereid, Ian, Todd:
The receptionist smiles knowingly at Nereid and Ian, then picks up the intercom line on her phone and announces you. She opens the inner door and shows you into Dr. Taggart's office.

It's more of the same nautical theme, even more photos of him aboard various vessels [OOC: No, Ian, none of these show that ship, either.] and in exotic locations. The wall behind the antique desk is plastered with framed diplomas--at least a dozen of them--and beneath that is a mahogany sideboard with brass locks on the drawers.

The man himself comes out from around the desk, offering his hand. He's dressed in a blue yachting jacket and white slacks. His tan is intense. "Dr. Mahelona, a real pleasure to meet you at last! I hope this means that you've decided to listen to reason, and accept my offer of a commission?" He offers you seats; there are chairs drawn up in front of his desk.

"Moving into the private sector has done wonders for my finances; I can make it worth your while--but absolute discretion is required." He looks at Ian and Todd. "You colleague, and your...student?...will be bound by the same nondisclosure agreement."

Meanwhile:
Outside, Detective Smith gives up leaning on his Impala, and goes for a little stroll around the outside of the warehouse...

In reply to DainXB - GM (msg # 5):

Kai sits dumbfounded by the barrage of information.

Whoa there cowboy...maybe is not a a yes...sheesh...I bet you are all hands on date.

Now, my team here will sign a nondisclosure agreement but I don't jump into a longterm partnerships without more details.

So let's talk details...what are we going after Taggart?

"Going after? I'm afraid what I have in mind is a bit less...adventurous. The artifact in question is already in my possession; but I need your expertise in ancient Mediterranean and Near-Eastern cultures to authenticate it."

He unlocks one of the brass locks on the mahogany sideboard, and brings out a small object, wrapped in thick cloth.

"This was recovered from the floor of the Black Sea by a Russian naval diver."
He unveils the object with a small flourish. [OOC: I've uploaded a picture to the Game Map page. You can look at the artifact there.] "I believe it to be Neolithic, but as you can see the carving is quite...unusual." The artifact is stone, slightly larger than a doubled fist, and obviously broken from a larger statue. It's a carving of a head--but it bears more resemblance to Amm-Fib'ian's true form than it does to any human!

Taggart continues. "I'd like to hire you to analyze this thing, verify it's age, and if possible identify the culture it comes from. It's history since being discovered is a little... checkered. I'd like to get an authoritative provenance before I try to sell it."

Nereid:
[OOC: What he's asking is a little shady, academically. If the thing turns out to be real, and of historical significance, you'd be contractually obligated not to publish your findings. That would be a grave disservice to the archaeological community...]
[OOC: Gain 1 Determination, I'm Compelling 'Weirdness Magnet'. It'll cost you 1 Determination to turn down this offer. :evil grin:]

Todd is only half-listening to the conversation as he looks at all the photographs.

"Wow. You've had a lot of boats. Did you need to get new ones when the old ones sank?" he asks with maximal artlessness.

Taggart glances at Todd, slightly annoyed--but he answers politely, so as not to offend Dr. Mahelona. "No, they didn't sink--well, most of them didn't anyway." He flashes white teeth in a self-deprecating smile. "I've been around the world several times on various expeditions. The Oak Island dig in '94, the recovery of the Santa Esmeralda, Lake Titicaca in 2006, the search for the U-869." He gestures toward various photos as he speaks.

"Stick with your studies, young man. Archaeology can take you places." He turns an ingratiating expression on Dr. Mahelona, as if to say 'See, we're both on the same side here, educators and scholars.'

Taggart looks peeved at the fresh interruption. "Pay attention please, Mr. ..." He pauses, realizing that you haven't been introduced. "I didn't find this item. I purchased it, from... an associate of the unfortunate Russian diver who recovered it."

He shoots Ian a narrow-eyed glance. "How do you know about the Southern Shore charter? Not my finest hour--but also not at all my fault, as I explained to my employers."

Re: E1S6 - Dr. Taggart's office - Nereid, Ian
Taggart's narrowed eyes become a scowl, which he directs at Ian and Dr. Maheloni. "If this is the beginnings of some legal proceedings..." He's now convinced that Ian is a lawyer preparing to sue him for something. [OOC: For the sake of brevity, I'll just assume that you deny it, and get on with my info-dump. :)]

"Bearing in mind that I'm not admitting to any wrongdoing, or any potentially criminal activities..." Taggart launches into his tale.

"A while back, I was engaged by the Southern Shore corporation to lead an underwater recovery operation. The whole thing was a bit odd, but the money was good. I chartered a boat; Southern Shore provided a dive team--no-nonsense undersea demolitions guys, not archaeologists. They also provided special detection gear, supposedly able to detect artifacts buried beneath the ocean floor. We were trolling with it off Honokaa, as instructed--which didn't make any sense. The seabed there is all solid lava; pyroclastic flows would have destroyed anything made by human hands, so there was no chance of finding any 'artifacts', and frankly--no disrespect," He glances at Dr. Mahelona, "but Polynesian artifacts are a dime a dozen around here. Even if there was something down there, it couldn't have had much value."

"The damned detector claimed that there was something about twenty meters beneath the seabed. The dive team went down with blasting gear to retrieve it. Not my call; the dive master insisted. I was topside, with the two-man boat crew. A storm brewed up, very fast; the compass went haywire, the so-called detector started 'detecting' crazy things--energy pulses from whatever it found down there, if you can believe it." He doesn't look happy, remembering the event.

"The electrical storm must have detonated the demo charges early, and all at once. The boat nearly capsized, the instruments and engines were dead. I--we--abandoned ship, and took a Zodiac inflatable back to shore." Taggart's too-charming smile is nowhere to be seen, now. "End of story. The legalities were questionable at best, so I walked away and never looked back. I won't be working for Southern Shore again--and here's a bit of free advice; if they ever approach you for something, say 'no'."

"Fascinating."

Ian opens the briefcase, is surprised to see a package of granola bars among some folders and papers, and beings noisily unwrapping them.

"Once you complete your business with Mr. Taggart Nereid, I should much like to investigate this Southern Shore."

He takes an awkward bite of a granola bar and smiles.

In reply to Amm-Fibian (msg # 15):

Kai is lost in the artifact she studies it intently cross referencing what she knows with what she sees and feels. The back of her brain is frantically trying to remind her that "private sector archeology" is in fact "tomb robbing" and discoveries of the past belong to all people not just rich jerks.

But she shushes the voice for reason for a moment, she will worry about the legal/ethical problems in a minute. Right now, she is working.

OOC: I am totally taking that point and get drawn into this no win situation. I will also make a vague stab at the item (I figure I will need to actually research the thing and use my lab to date it) , but let's see what I can theorize here...

Intellect 4, science archeology +2= 6
22:44, Today: Nereid rolled 1,2 using d6,d6 with rolls of 1,2. any bells ringing?
