E1S7 - Blue Sea Research & Development - Ty'daal, Angelfish
Blue Sea R&D is a long narrow building, seemingly quite ecofast, along a commercial dock near Nimitz Bay. The Kiyomi Maru has a mooring slip adjacent.

The landward end of the building is the business office, generally 'staffed' by Angela. Dr. Ishida's apartment is upstairs, over the lab. At the furthest seaward end, the building extends out on the dock over the ocean. What appears to be an indoor pool adjacent to the lab space is actually a 'moon pool', open at the bottom, allowing free access to the sea.

Dr. Ishida is seated at a computer console. Behind him, on a wall-screen display is a rotating schematic of the MKVII エンゼルフィッシュ diving suit, but his attention is focused on a smaller computer screen. "Come take a look. This is disturbing information..."

The screen shows a listing of lost or missing fishing trawlers in the Pacific, over the past few months. There are three other instances of fishing trawlers vanishing without a trace in mid-ocean, in otherwise calm conditions. In one case, a partial distress call was reported. Nothing was heard from the other ships.

"Bad enough, on it's own. But look here;" He points to the last two lines on the screen. "The Missus K. and the Strong Currant seem both to have been lost on the same day--but over twelve hundred kilometers apart. How fast, do you think, could that machine swim?" The doubt on his face is obvious.

"Not that fast," Ty'daal thinks aloud. "That can only mean that there are more of these creatures. And if they are all attacking fishing vessels...Well that is confusing. Does your world put great value on fish?" Ty'daal asks.

Re: E1S7 - Blue Sea Research
Angelfish, now dressed in her more typical shorts and t-shirt, has taken a seat at yet another computer.

"Commercial fishing is a multi-million dollar industry, but not the sort of thing someone would kill for.  And there are a lot easier ways to sabotage a rival in the business that by creating a fleet of giant killer mecha-squids!"

She begins typing on the keyboard in front of her; " The real question seems to be, just what is Southern Shore, who's behind it and what do they have to gain..."

(OOC: Rolling "Intellect" to research "Southern Shore" on the 'net --

Re: E1S7 - Blue Sea Research
Information begins to come in, filling overlapping windows on Angela's screen.

The only local address is:
Southern Shore Corporation, 4578 Pukai Blvd., Akamai City, HI 96829

Ishida-san reads over Angela's shoulder. "That's over on the eastern side of the island--facing Molokai."

Southern Shore's website is mostly their two-color logo, and links to subsidiary businesses all over the world--naval architects and shipwrights, shipping companies, an airline, a steel mill, several high-tech manufacturers... They're all over the map, both literally and figuratively.

Ishida-san digs in his pocket for a cigarette. "I don't see anything to do with fish, though..."

The business news is more fruitful. Searches on the names of companies on the subsidiaries list bring up news tidbits about large purchases of steel, titanium, and electronic components--and seventeen metric tons of niobium from Brazil.

Dr. Ishida pauses with his lighter half-way to his lips. "Niobium is used with steel to make superalloys--the sort of thing you find in jet engines, high-end turbine systems, even spacecraft." He frowns, his lighter forgotten until the heat makes him drop it.

"Or a mecha squid?" Tydaal half-suggests, half-inquires.

"Or a mecha-squid." Angela agrees.

"Seems to me that we should go check out Southern Shore, see what we can see in person.  If we take one of the boats, it leaves our options open -- walk right up to the front door, skulk around looking for, I dunno, evidence that they're building an army of mechanical calamari...  we can even take the suit along, in case they have a docking facility..."  She trails off as she begins to realize how crazy this sounds.

"I know, I know, it's just a little too Scooby Doo, but if you guys have a better idea -- I'm all ears!"
