E2S5 - Ian's mini-sub - I, Ty
The two of you have been keeping pace with the Kiyomi Maru, Ty'daal mostly under his own power, but occasionally catching hold of the mini-sub and 'hitching a ride'. The sub is performing well; Amm-Fib'ian's homemade seawater-induction batteries charge losslessly from the research vessel's electrical supply, and power the sub's magnetohydrodynamic drive.

You've both noticed, over the past day and night of travel, that there's something else out there following the Kiyomi Maru. You've only caught glimpses; whatever it is, it's bigger than Ty'daal, smaller than the mini-sub, and it stays deep, down in the dark where sunlight hardly penetrates.

OOC: I totally forgot to describe Ian's sub!

Ian's sub looked like something that would have been seen in an 80's Saturday morning cartoon. It was basically a fishbowl or lightbulb with an engine on the back, and a light on the front.

He flipped on the intercom, "Ty'daal, I think we should check out our visitor."

"I concur, Amm-Fibian. It could be a danger, or a potential ally," Ty'daal responds as he holds on to the sub, letting it pull him through the water.

Ian, Ty'daal:
Whatever the other thing is, it moves with surprising speed and stealth. A useful feature of a liquid-filled submarine is that (just like Angelfish's rebreather suit) it has no 'crush depth'. You're soon skimming along over the ocean floor. Deep darkness lies to your stern, while ahead the ocean becomes shallower as you climb the ridge topped by the coral atoll of Kiritimati.

[OOC: Both of you Test Awareness vs Difficulty 6.]

Ty'daal surveyed the area as the past by the ocean floor, one hand on grasping the sub to pull him along.

(19:40, Today: Ty'daal rolled 1,2 using d6,d6 with rolls of 1,2. Awareness (+5) Check. Total:  +4)

Re: E2S5 - Ian's mini-sub - I, Ty
As you follow the faint, moving shadow in the depths up to the shallower floor of the Bay of Wrecks, the  desolate terrain gives way to colorful knobs of coral and gently waving fronds of aquatic plants. Groupers and other tropical fish flit between curiously-shaped lumps of riotous coral growth.

Ty'daal:
You taste silt in the water, as if something had stirred up the seabed a few moments ago, but you see nothing...

Ian:
You've been following a flicker of movement, so hard to spot that it vanishes when you look directly at it. Here, against the complex background, it's even harder to identify. Suddenly, you feel an overwhelming urge to yank the mini-sub's controls hard over!

An expanse of gray-white coral sand just beneath you erupts in a cloud of silt! Something big and fast, with broad triangular 'wings' whips through the space the sub just vacated!

[OOC: Your Danger Sense saved you! Now, Test the sub's Handling of 4 vs your attacker's Strength + Underwater Combat Expert total of 8.]

[OOC: After Ian's reaction, Ty'daal can act!]

Re: E2S5 - Ian's mini-sub - I, Ty
Ian:
[OOC: The rules say test the lower of your Coordination or the vehicle's Handling. I think, though, that I'll treat it as a Combined roll, so you get +1 to your total for having a Coordination (or Danger Sense) higher than the sub's Handling. So your total is +3.]

The shape is humanoid, but not entirely. The humanoid arms for the leading edges of broad triangular fins like those on a skate or ray. The head is a neckless triangle blending smoothly into the creature's shoulders, framing a snarling human face! A wickedly-barbed tail lashes behind his legs, seeking a target! The powerful arms wrap around the bubble-cowl of the mini-sub, and the engines howl in protest as the sub is wrestled to a halt!

Suddenly there is a blue flash of electricity from glowing streaks along the figure's arms and chest!

[OOC: This is an Aura with the Burst Stunt. The sub can't take Stamina damage and this wouldn't affect it's Structure. Gain 1 Determination and the temporary Challenge 'Electrical Systems Shorted Out'.]

Ty'daal:
The hybrid human-skate creature surges upward, shedding the camouflage of burrowing beneath the seabed, and attacks Ian's mini-sub! When it's pale markings flare blue, you feel a powerful electrical jolt through the water!

[OOC: The Aura affects you too, since you're at close range--unless you can dodge out of the way in time! Test Coordination against a Difficulty of 6. Then you can take your action.]

Re: E2S5 - Ian's mini-sub - I, Ty
Ty'daal:
You kick backward, away from the mini-sub as the hybrid creature's jolt of electricity conducts into the vehicle. Sparks fly from Ian's console inside! You feel a tingle through the water, but are unharmed.
[OOC: Your action is next!]

Ty'daal, Ian:
The powerful humanoid shakes the mini-sub. His voice is a near-subsonic growl, but the words are in the language of the humans you have met. "Who—what—are you? And why are you following that ship?" he demands angrily.

Todd:
Your powerful strokes push you down through the water. That contraption Ian built is down there, near the bottom, looking like a lightbulb with a motor attached. There's something clinging to it--a man-shape with a triangular head and wide wing-fin-things for arms!

Ty'daal doubled back, kicking once to build up his speed and shot in towards the manta-man, "I am Ty'daal, those are my allies, and by attacking you have made a fearsome enemy!"

(12:16, Today: Ty'daal rolled 4,3 using d6,d6 with rolls of 4,3. Ty'daal's Response. Total: +4 (Prowess +3). Strength is 8.)

Re: E2S5 - Ian's mini-sub - I, Ty, T
The creature dodges with amazing speed, avoiding Ty'daal's charge with a flourish of wing-fins, like a toreador dodging a bull. In the process, he releases the mini-sub. Without power, it tumbles to the floor of the bay. "You question me?" He roars in a near-subsonic voice. "I am Skate, and you will answer my questions! What is that ship to you?"

Todd:
As you swim downward, you can feel the pressure increasing on your eardrums. You see Ty'daal's charge, and hear Skate's demands. You don't think Skate knows you're here...

-2 + Awareness 5 = Total +3
Looking for Octopus, Shark, or whale/porpoise

Ian swims out of his sub and searches the murky water for a sea creature he can possess.
"We follow that ship because it contains our enemies! You must be their protector!"

OOC: Ian is obviously lying, having determined that the Skate must think we are friends with someone on the ship.

Todd's lungs are starting to strain. He's not sure what's going on, but this Skate character seems to be getting punchy with his teammates, and it's not like he's going to be able to do much to clarify the situation.

So he belts Skate in the back of the head.

[Test vs my diminishing air supply:
Strength 8 + Roll +1 = 9. No probs.

Now to swing at Skate:
Coordination 6, -1 for being underwater, +1 for martial arts, roll +2 = 8.]

Once they're both in the water, Angelfish gestures to Nereid and types a quick message, HANG ON.

Even with Nereid's added weight, the boot impellers will get them to the site of the disturbance faster than Neried can swim alone - and there is safety in numbers.

Ahead, she spots Ty'daal and Amm-Fibian facing off against...

quote:
"I am Skate, and you will answer my questions! What is that ship to you?"

Ah, hell...  Shaking Nereid off, Angelfish moves away from her friend and toward Skate...  really not their fight...  This has to be stopped, Skate is dangerous, but as always, Angela's thoughts and feelings about him are... divided.

She checks to be sure the missles are charged, and the volume on her speaker is as high as it will go...

STOP    LEAVE THEM

Re: E2S5 - Ian's mini-sub - I, Ty, T
Skate snarls down at Ian, "You will not harm the man who sails that ship!" His tail lashes, and his arm-fins sweep backward as he prepares to charge at Ian!

Todd:
The back of Skate's triangular head blends smoothly into his massive shoulder-muscles, but that also makes it hard for him to turn and look behind himself. You blindside him with a powerful punch! Skate is driven forward toward the orange coral on the bottom of the bay--but not before he reflexively releases another electric charge!
[OOC: You deliver your Strength in Stamina damage to Skate, but his electric aura delivers 5 Stamina damage to you as soon as you touch him!]

Ty'daal, Ian:
[OOC: Test Coordination vs a Difficulty of 5 to avoid the spreading electricity in the water released by Skate's reflexive defense. On a miss you'll each take 5 Stamina.]
You notice that the blue flare of Skate's markings is slightly less bright this time. Like most aquatic creatures with electroplaques, it takes time for him to rebuild a charge!
[OOC: Rules notes: Skate has Aura 6 with the Burst Stunt and the Degrades Limit. He's running down; his next shock will only be a 4.]

Ian:
You twiddle the dials on the T.U.N.A., looking for anything that might be of use, knowing that if you find something to jump into, your real body will be floating defenseless only yards from Skate!

Success! A primitive neurosystem, but close by... A tiger shark! At ten feet long and weighing over eight hundred pounds, it's smallish for it's species--but bigger than Skate. It's electrical senses have already been attracted by Skate's energy pulses, and it swims leisurely toward possible prey, thrashing in the water.
[OOC: Test Possession vs the tiger shark's Willpower of 4 if you want to take control of it.]

Ty'daal:
[OOC: Yes, you can use Water Control to defend against the electric aura.]

Ian:
[Don't forget to roll to defend against the electric aura.]
The tiger shark's clarity of vision is astounding, and it's electrical sense is... difficult to process. Actually, operating inside this primitive brain makes everything but hunger/fear/aggression difficult to process...

Angelfish:
As you broadcast your text 'shout', Skate whips around in the water. "You! I should have expected you to be aboard!" His fins contract and he hurtles toward you and Nereid, who is now trailing in your wake!

Angelfish, Nereid:
Surprisingly, he streaks past Angelfish, lashing at her with his barbed tail, and attempts to wrap Nereid in his arm-fins!
[OOC: Angelfish: Test Prowess vs his Prowess of 8. Nereid: Skate's attempting a wrestling grab on you, so you get to defend with the highest of your Prowess, Coordination, or Strength against his Strength of 6.]
[OOC: Rules note: He gets two attacks because his tail gives him the Fast Attack power. After all the defense rolls are in, you can all act in whatever order you like.]

Ty'daal tries to shape the water so that he is inside a dry bubble underneath the sea, but the electricity is too quick for him and he feels its painful sting.

(09:42, Today: Ty'daal rolled 2,4 using d6,d6 with rolls of 2,4. Air Bubble Defense, GO! With Water Control 5 that is only a 3, so I take the 5 stamina damage.)
