In reply to Ty'daal (msg # 23):

I will stay up top, I can link us up telepathically if that's ok. Otherwise, I could just link with one of you. Either way I will search for the missing people mentally.

Angelfish:
Angelfish will pause in suiting up to help Todd find gear to fit him.

"Have you used scuba gear before?  Do you need help?"

[OOC good question. I'll need the GM to call that. Let me know if I need to pay a determination point.]

Time Keeper:
[OOC: Running on water is a Stunt, so spend 1 Determination, tag a Quality, pick the level of success you want, and test Super-speed against Difficulty 7.]
At speed, you can run a search pattern miles in diameter very quickly.
[OOC: Test Awareness against Difficulty 4.]

Nereid:
You cast your mind outward, the pendant warm against your chest. The tight knots of emotion you sense from Dr. Ishida and Angelfish, the nervous energy of Time Keeper and Todd, become small points as your perceptions expand. The ocean is so empty out here...
[OOC: Telepathically scanning a whole area is a Stunt, since you can't see your targets. Spend 1 Determination, tag a Quality, pick the level of success you want, and test Telepathy against Difficulty 6.]

Ian, Ty'daal:
You descend into the Pacific depths--actually somewhat shallower here than in other places. This whole area is above a broad seamount. The wincingly-shrill pinging of the Kiyomi Maru's sonar fades as you drop into the darkness...
[OOC: Both of you Test Awareness against Difficulty 4.]

Ian:
[OOC: Thanks for reminding me about your weakness to sonar! Take 1 Determination and lose the use of your Danger Sense for this scene; the ringing in your aural-membranes is preventing you from feeling the tingling of your 'Amm-Fib'ian sense'.]

Todd:
Angelfish helps you into a set of scuba tanks, mask and flippers.
[OOC: Todd's probably used scuba before, since he's from Hawai'i, but that's up to you. With a Strength of 8, you can punch through steel plate and tie girders in knots; you should be able to withstand considerable pressure. If you wind up having to go even deeper, you can spend Determination to tag 'Peak Physical Perfection' and roll to Stunt Life Support vs Pressure off of your Strength.]

Angelfish:
You finish suiting up, and hit the button to purge air and fill the helmet with rebreather fluid. You exhale hard, then let the pale blue fluid fill your lungs. It's always been easy for you to 'voluntarily drown' in the stuff; easier still after taking the drug therapy Ishida-san developed... You can't help but notice how intently he's not watching you; he's focused completely on the sonar and the radios.

Figuring he's the slowest of the bunch given his lack of aquatic talents, Todd dives in and begins descending.

"Huh. Wonder what the bends could do to me? Probably not something to find out the hard way."

OOC: Spending 1 determination for the stunt (2 left) , I would like a major success so I need 9 to get that.

I am tagging "Let's not fight" because she does turn to her powers when she reaches her physical limits.

22:41, Today: Nereid rolled 4,4 using d6,d6 with rolls of 4,4. telepathic scan

6+(4-4)= 6 so I spent two more determination to reach my desired effect ( 0 left )

Todd, Angelfish:
As you dive, you can see the lights of Ian's mini-sub below you, penetrating the murky depths. The lights show the sea floor below, and a few schools of fish. The ocean here seems entirely peaceful.

Ty'daal, Ian:
The top of the seamount is bare of anything resembling debris. If the trawler went down, it didn't happen here or within a dozen miles of here.

Nereid:
You can sense a group of minds, stressed and terrified, far away to the south. There are at least twenty people. You get jumbled impressions from their minds:

::steel tentacles slamming into the deck::lifeboats::chaos and confusion::calm seas, clear skies, and nothing visible in any direction, all the way to the horizon::

[OOC: Waiting for Time Keeper to check in, then we can proceed.]

At first it felt like he was running on jelly until he reached maximum speed then he skimmed along the surface using the boat as reference he quickly gridded the area in his mind and searched each section at incredible speed.

OOC:  06:30, Today: Time Keeper rolled 3 using 2d6-7. Awareness (7). =10
06:29, Today: Time Keeper rolled -3 using 2d6-7. Speed(7) 1 determination : times up.= 4

Re: E2S6 - The Kiyomi Maru, refueled - Everyone
Time Keeper:
You run your grid pattern, expanding outward from the Kiyomi Maru, at incredible speed. This water-running thing is getting easier, every time you do it. [OOC: You're half-way to making it a zero-cost Stunt. Five more times running on something that is otherwise impossible, and it's yours. :)]

Ty'daal's message through Nereid's telepathic link comes through spread out across what seems like an hour to you; "No... sign... of... the... vessel... down... here... are... we... sure... this... is... the... right... place?" It would be easy to forget how that sentence began before you ever heard it's end.

You're working your way southward in the direction the trawler was reported to have been headed, about a hundred miles away from the research ship, when you spot objects in the water. Lifeboats! Six lifeboats, around twenty survivors total. Given the time differential, their faces are frozen in expressions of apathy, shock, and despair. You'll be on them and past them before they react to seeing you streak by.

[OOC: Take 1 Determination for the temporary Challenge 'No Time To Chat', representing the fact that if you stop running and sync up temporally with them, you'll also sink. :) Alternatively, if you buy out of the Compel, you'll be able to stop aboard one of the lifeboats, and scare the bejeezus out of a few people.]

Realising his time zipping speed was not allowing him to link up mentally with the rest of the team he glided across the surface of the water and into the nearest boat.

OOC: will buy out the compel and land in the boat so I can them contact the others to come rescue the survivers.

Two of the sailors in the boat nearly fall overboard as they scramble away from your sudden arrival. "Who? Wha...? Where did you come from?"

[In deference to my New Zealander friends, I'll spare you my attempts to type a NZ accent, but the sailors definitely have one. :)]

Time Keeper came to a stop and crouch next to the men in the boat. " I am Time Keeper and my friends and I have been searching for you. If you will bear with me a moment I will get a rescue underway"

With that Ben stood and looked back in the direction of his ship Guys I've found the crew all seem in reasonable health but a quick pickup would be good as while I'm not moving I'm a sitting target the time master mentally thought.

There's suddenly excitement and near-panic surging through your psychic link with the sailors! You get jagged visual impressions from multiple sources--sailors reacting to Time Keeper's sudden appearance in one of the lifeboats.

[OOC: Is Dr. Ishida linked into your 'telepathic radio' with the team, or is it just between superheroes?]

Re: E2S6 - The Kiyomi Maru, refueled - Everyone
Dr. Ishida is a little unnerved by the whole 'group telepathy' experience--perhaps because having Angelfish's thoughts in his mind, and potentially his thoughts in hers, is just a bit too intimate at the moment. Nevertheless, he responds to the dialogue.

"Time Keeper, at our top speed you're still over an hour away. I'll radio your position to the Coast Guard--they have helicopters as well as ships, and they can take people aboard. The Kiyomi Maru is almost at her capacity now. Is there any sign of the mecha-squid?"

He exits the watertight doors to the ship's tiny bridge and speaks aloud to Amm-Fib'ian, bobbing on the surface in his mini-sub. "Ian, you said you saw what you believed to be the mecha-squid's programming. That makes you our expert on their behavior. Do you think that the rescue operation is in any danger of attack?" No reason to worry Time Keeper unnecessarily by discussing this telepathically... he thinks--and then immediately wonders if that thought was transmitted over the link!

OOC: Dain, I reviewed the info I gathered in the other thread, and it appears the Mecha-Squid are just after fish. Correct me if I am wrong of course!

"From what I was able to gather, the mecha-squid are mostly interested in taking fish to Emperor Penguin in his Antarctic HQ."

Dr. Ishida nods. "Good, then it won't be lurking near the survivors." he says aloud. He continues the conversation telepathically. "The mecha-squid is probably heading for it's rendezvous with a full... belly... of fish. If we hurry, we can find out what it's rendezvousing with."

[OOC: If anyone has any further preparation to make, conversations to have, or questions for the sailors or the New Zealand Coast Guard rescuers, now is the time. After that, we'll advance to this issue's big climax. :)]

Re: E2S6 - The Kiyomi Maru, refueled - Everyone
Angelfish climbs back up to the Kiyomi's fantail -- no point in using up the suit's power or wearing herself out...

{"Time Keeper. since it will be a while before rescue gets to you, see if you can get those guys talking about what happened.  The last eyewitnesses only spoke Japanese, so I wasn't able to ask any questions."}

Knowing that Ishida-san is "linked in" as well, Angelfish pushes away the thought that she really should understand more Japanese than she does...

{"I can't imagine they saw much, but you never know where you might find a pearl.  If nothing else, they might have a lead on where it went."}

Ishida-san slides back into the narrow cockpit seat, and throttles up the engines. "Time Keeper, if you want to spend some, um... time... interviewing the sailors, we'll come and pick you up. Our course to the rendezvous point passes your location." He thinks through Nereid's link.

The Kiyomi Maru's radio is tuned to the emergency frequency, listening to the Royal New Zealand Coast Guard rescue operation's traffic. "RNAZ Flight 14 out of Hawke's Bay, ETA to zone 40 minutes." "QRV Celia Knowles; copy. We are underway with a full response team. ETA 58 minutes."

[OOC: This wraps up the current scene, (apart from anything Time Keeper wants to do when he checks in). Now that the sailors are rescued, I'll have the next scene posted later today.]

Time Keeper sits on the edge of the life boat "There is a rescue team on the way but I think we can help by getting all the boats together that will give us something to do while we wait, give me a chance to assess the other survivors and allow us to talk about what happened to you all"

As they worked Time Keeper gently questioned the survivors about what had happene to them

Re: E2S6 - The Kiyomi Maru, refueled - Everyone
Time Keeper:
A sailor named McGann helps you organize the survivors, and keep the boats together. As you work, he recounts his story of what happened. "We'd just hauled in the nets; bluefin mostly, some by-catch but not a lot. Skipper ordered the nets out again fast. He'd got a big signal on the sonar, figured it to be more bluefin. We had men out working the rig, getting ready to put out net, and I heard Ned scream. The whole net rig, winches, cables, and all, pulled right out of the deck! I yelled 'Man overboard!' but before we could do anything, something like a big steel hawser whipped up out of the water, and caught hold of us amidships. Just wrapped around the hull and across the deck--never seen anything like it before."

McGann looks out toward the horizon. "It's deep here. But then the whole ship jolted like we'd run aground. You could hear metal scream and rip. Something was opening us up like a tin can. All the power went out, engines stopped. Skipper ordered us into the lifeboats. I guess he knew how much damage there was; how fast we were going down." He shakes his head. "Never seen anything like it before."

Once you get a head-count, there are twenty-two survivors out of a crew of twenty-four. Only the sailor McGann knew as Ned and the Captain of the trawler are unaccounted for.

In a little under an hour, a spotter aircraft is overhead. Shortly thereafter, the Royal New Zealand Coast Guard ship Celia Knowles zeroes in on the lifeboats. Her captain uses a loud-hailer, and advises that other rescue ships are on their way. As you help transfer the stunned sailors aboard, the Coast Guard Captain takes a second to thank you. "Without your help, it might have taken us days to find these men. Well done!"
