E3S1 - U. of Hawai'i-Akamai Campus - Nereid
Nereid:
It's good to be back in a warm climate! The trip back to Hawai'i aboard the Kagomi Maru took almost a week, but was uneventful.

Unfortunately, your brief sabbatical left you with paperwork piled on your desk and in your email inbox. There's a tropical paradise just outside your office window, but here you are instead; inside, trying to catch up on two weeks of grading, lesson plans, and reports...

It's a bit of a relief when Brent Hamilton, your part-time office clerk, sticks his head in the door. "Dr. Mahelona? Sorry to interrupt, but Dr. Shimadzu over in the Science building just called; he wants to meet with you over lunch if that's OK?"

Albert Shimadzu isn't part of the University's teaching staff. He's Technical Director for the Science Department, in charge of the instrumentation. He's fifty-something and married, so you don't think that this is his nerdy way of hitting on you...

In reply to DainXB - GM (msg # 1):

Oh...have we been breaking too much lab equipment again?

No... Brent should be used to her strange non-sequiturs by now but he can still be caught off guard.

that's my other job... and that was when Kai realized that she was rambling...out loud.

Anyway, tell Dr. Shimadzu I would love to meet with him over lunch. In a couple of hours, I will have worked through this paperwork and worked up an appetite.

Dr. Mahelona?

Yes?

It is nearly noon, Dr. Shimadzu apologies for asking so late...

Noon? Do i eat lunch at noon?

Rarely…but most people do. And you have a 2pm class, so that doesn't leave much time if you go later.

Okay then, tell him I will meet with him and I'll head right over.

Kai looked at the mountains of paperwork sighed...

You can wait she said to the papers. I will be back with you sometime…oh my…late this afternoon. Dr. Mahelona stared out the window as sighed again before she left to meet Dr. Shumadzu.

The Science building cafeteria isn't bad, as far as University-class "fine dining" goes. Dr. Shimadzu is of average height, with a slightly-stooped posture, tremendously thick glasses in black plastic frames, and a bow-tie.

"Dr. Mahelona! Thanks for joining me." He pulls out a chair for you at a corner table--very old-fashioned of him. He looks around, conspiratorially, before continuing. He seems to be making sure that no one nearby is listening...

"I don't mind letting faculty members use the lab equipment for their research; that's what it's there for, after all..." He hesitates, clears his throat, and fusses with his tray. "I don't really mind if some of the faculty use the lab equipment for... independent projects... as long as they do it during slack times and respect the protocol of my department--and you always have."

He polishes his spoon with a napkin, then stirs his ice tea, finally getting to the point. "But you really must take possession of that... thing... you were doing the gas chromatography on! It's upsetting the students. The most ridiculous rumors have started about it, and if that draws attention to the fact that I've been allowing faculty members to use the equipment for private projects..." Dr. Shimadzu gives you a pained expression.

Dr. Shima....look you can call me Kai, and I would like to call you Albert...if for no other reason standing on protocol when we are both Doctors seems a little ...well odd.

her voice dips and she speaks with alternating tones as she imagines a conversation
.

"Hello doctor. Hello doctor. How are you doctor? I am fin doctor how are you?"

Anyway, I appreciate you coming to me about this and your discretion...but I've gotta know the details. We ARE scientist , granted my speciality is considered a "soft" science but you know data, facts...so if there are rumors then let's get to the facts that lie behind them.

Now, I will retrieve the artifact right after lunch...but I need to talk to some of these students...

she pauses for a second and flashes a smile that is innocent and bright, going for the bubbly little sister effect.

...deal?

"Thank you, uh... Kai." Dr. Shimadzu turns slightly pink. "The sooner it's out of my building, the better, of course--but I have meetings with the Finance Committee all afternoon..."

"Actually, most of the... well, the excitable students... are taking night courses. If you could come by after the coast is clear--after the Finance Committee members have gone--you could talk with the students. Perhaps you could allay some of their fears, or just talk some sense into them. I really can't fathom how students of the hard sciences--no offense!--can take such things seriously..."

No problem. I will remove the artifact right after I finish this yummy salad. Then I will pop over when evening classes begin and see of anyone will talk to me.

You accompany Dr. Shimadzu back to the gas chromatography lab after lunch. He's immediately pulled away by a half-dozen people in very businesslike suits; the Finance Committee, presumably.

He steers them all into a glass-walled conference room, trying to pretend that you're not even there. The artifact is in a locked drawer in a set of white-enameled cabinets against the back wall of the lab. It's packed into a cardstock box, but it's still wrapped in the heavy burlap cloth it was in when Dr. Taggart gave it to you.

[OOC: Test Awareness against a Difficulty of 5 to notice any members of the Finance Committee noticing you retrieving the artifact...]

Kai looked around before she retrieved the artifact.

Wait a minute, now Dr. Shimadzu has me being paranoid. , but realizing that Albert has his strange moments but is never what one would call a "drama king" she decided to be cautious and watch for anything out of the ordinary.

You manage to make your exit, box tucked under your arm, without any of the Finance Committe members even seeming to notice your presence. Dr. Shimadzu appears to breathe a sigh of relief as you turn the corner and head for the Science building's exit.

Where do you want to store the artifact, now that it's overstayed it's welcome in the gas chromatography lab?

I hope to have a bag/backpack big enough to keep it safe but with me for a bit (It appears to act up at night but I want to be around the next time it does anything)

And I have a lecture this afternoon, then I will keep with me as I try to find students that have had "encounters" this evening.

Nereid:
You can tuck it into whatever you use to carry books and papers to and from class; it's not very big. Are you taking it back to the Science building when you go to interview the students, or do you want to lock it in your office (or elsewhere)?

After your afternoon classes are over, you head back to the Science Building. As you stroll into the gas chromatography lab, it's easy to pick out the students that Dr. Shimadzu referred to; three members of the night school class keep shooting glances back at the cabinet where the artifact was stored. Fearful glances, it looks like...

You recognize Angie Ford, the lab TA; you've spoken to her before. The other two are strangers to you; a skinny black teenager mounting a sample in a vaccuum clamp, and a blonde-haired young woman with horn-rimmed glasses. She's speaking very quietly to Angie. "You're sure it's gone, right? Good riddance! I don't care who belives me or not, I know what I felt." The girl crosses her arms, hugging herself to suppress a shudder.

Kai approaches the group and gives them a shy wave.

Hi, I am Dr.Mahelona... I have met Angie before...and I think I may owe you all an apology. I had the lab running tests on an artifact a colleague of mine found. I heard it was causing some problems?

I know this sounds odd...but if you could tell me about it, it might help me learn more about this strange artifact.

The blonde with the glasses looks around, then nods. "We'd seen that... thing... when Angie mounted the samples for the GC. It was creepy-looking, but I didn't think much of it. A couple of nights later, I was in here late, running tests for my thesis project. I was alone, but I kept hearing something..." She looks uncomfortable, and hugs herself tighter. "Like a whispering sound, but if I turned around and listened, it would fade away."

"A couple of nights later, the same thing happened. I got a little spooked, and I went out to the break area to get a coffee out of the machine. You have to walk past all those glass-walled offices, you know? I saw a face reflected in the glass as I walked around the corner--like someone was following behind me, only no one was there. The face looked... kind of like that thing."

"I didn't want to work in here by myself after that. I skipped a couple of nights, until Angie was working. But that night..." She looks at Angie for corroboration, or at least support. "About three AM, I was getting pretty tired, and I went to the bathroom to splash some cold water on my face. While I was in there, I needed to go, y'know? So I was in one of the stalls." She gestures toward the back wall of the lab. You know the layout--the ladies' room and the mens room on this floor share a wall with that side of the lab. "I had my hand on the door, ready to leave, and suddenly there was this cold all around me. I tried to push open the door and run, but it wouldn't budge! The cold closed in, like clammy wet hands around my throat. I couldn't breathe!" The girl is visibly agitated now, remembering. "Angie walked into the ladies' room just then; she'd decided to take a break too. Suddenly, the cold was just gone, and I stumbled out of the stall choking."

Re: E3S1 - U. of Hawai'i-Akamai Campus - Nereid
Angie nods. "I saw a shadow--not a person, just their shadow--walking down the hall right outside this room one night. I was so scared; and it didn't make any sense, there wasn't anything to be scared of, just a shadow..." She shakes her head. "I was so scared, I just ran--all the way back to my dorm. I was supposed to be monitoring the lab that night, and I need the money, believe me... But I couldn't make myself get any closer to... whatever it was that I saw."

Angie beckons to the skinny guy working the gas chromatograph, who seems reluctant, but at her urging comes over. He introduces himself as Marshall. "I'm only ever here at night; I work two part-time jobs during the day. So I don't get much sleep. First time it happened, I just figured my mind was playing tricks, y'know? Three, four in the morning, I doze off sometimes. I mean, I'm just resting my eyes, but sometimes... I was entering data into the computer;" He gestures toward one of the lab terminals. "I opened my eyes after a little rest break, and I saw this thing right behind me. I mean right behind me, reflected in the monitor! I turned around so fast I almost fell off the lab stool, but there wasn't anything there." He tries to be nonchalant. "The thing that wasn't there looked like what Ang described; a shadow, but not exactly a person-shape. I'd heard her talking about it, so I figured it was the power of suggestion, and that I'd actually managed to doze off sitting there. Until it happened again. And again." He looks frustrated, and maybe a little angry. "Here, reflected in the computer monitor; in the men's room mirror... I set up the camera on my phone, propped on the counter, just to prove that I wasn't crazy."

Marshall pulls his cell phone out, and plays a video clip: He's sitting on a lab stool, hunched over the counter with a textbook and a notepad. His eyes droop, and his head nods a couple of times. Then his chin is on his chest, eyes shut. A dark shape obscures part of the camera view, like a shadow cast across Marshall's slumped form. The shadow is vaguely human-shaped, though the head is distorted. The shadow is darkest where it falls across Marshall's collar. It doesn't seem as if he's breathing at all. In the video, Marshall begins to tip sideways, losing his balance. With a gasp, he wakes up, choking and coughing. The shadow is gone as soon as he opens his eyes.

In reply to DainXB - GM (msg # 17):

Nope…not crazy.

Look, i am so sorry. The artifact came to me because it was mysterious and scary. I wanted some data on it to begin my research.

I know you all feel more than a little crazy...but there are more things in heaven and earth than we have dreamed of...

Kai trails off after is Shakespeare reappropriation.

Thanks. and good luck with your studies. Stay healthy, I remember Grad school...no sleep...two jobs, class, and all that ... and maybe your advisors remember that too. Nobody wants to kill you, professors just get caught up in all they have to do and forget how much pressure we are putting on our staff...so tell them when you a break, a day off or something. They will listen

and with a sheepish smile, Dr. Mahelona slung her backpack over her shoulder and was gone.

OOC: Ok, the next step I think is for Kai to try and make psychic contact with the artifact (if there is anything there remotely like a human mind) and I think she is too cautious to do this alone.

But, if the others are all tied up, I can play "dumb" (which is so in genre) and do this alone or I call whomever is also wrapping up their solo part.
