E3S10 - U. of Hawai'i, Akamai Campus - Nereid
It was a rough night last night! After coffee and a post-adrenaline energy-crash with Todd, you made a series of phone calls to cancel credit cards, then called it a (late) night and went home. Fortunately, your spare key was where you left it.

Equally fortunately, when you got to your office this morning the ever-enthusiastic Brent was already there so he could let you in even though your University ID and key-card were in your purse...

"Good morning, Dr. Mahelona! I made coffee..." He hands you a couple of "While You Were Out" message slips:

06:45
Dr. Taggart
808-555-1492
Urgent!

07:10
Lt. Moleta
ACPD
808-555-9191
Urgent!!!

"The phone's been ringing off the hook this morning!"

This message was last edited by the GM at 23:11, Fri 22 Nov 2013.

O goodness....I am so not ready for the day to begin. Now since the Lt . Had three exclamations, I will call him first ....thank you Brent , when I end up in jail...I will write you an excellent recommendation for you next  job. "

Kai  settles into her chair and picks up the phone dialing slowly the ACPD number.

The Akamai City Police Department is very modern, and thoroughly automated. It takes you only a few seconds to navigate their phone-maze and ring your call through to Lt. Santino Moleta, Homicide Division.

"Dr. Mahelona? Thank you for returning my call. I'm pursuing an investigation, and I have a few questions. Do you know a woman named Dongmei Lo? A student of yours, maybe?" Lt. Moleta's voice is businesslike and brisk, but the name he mentions doesn't ring any bells.

The name doesn't seem familiar. I will check my student data base to make sure I don't have her in my intro to Archeology class...which has over 50 students...I don't get to know the people in that class well. Which probably shows how helpful I probably will be able to be. Still I should be able to see who her advisor is if she is a student here.

Kai then thinks to herself "he said student maybe....he doesn't know...which means she may be connected to me through my other career...oh boy."

OOC: of course Kai uses the student info database to see if she can find anyone by that name

Nereid:
There's no listing for a Dongmei Lo in the University database. She's apparently never been a student there.

Lt. Moleta continues. "So you have no connection with Ms. Lo? You've never been to her apartment, for example?"

Okay then...absolutely don't know anyone by that name so well as to be in her apartment. In fact, I can say that I am 99.9% sure that I haven't been in the apartments of the women I know well enough to go visit them at their apartments.
(one must always allow some margin for error). Cause I am a very boring person socially.

"We got your name and number from your ID cards, which were found in Ms. Lo's residence." The Lieutenant pauses for what seems like a long time. "Is there anything you'd like to tell me, Dr. Mahelona?"

There are so much I'd like to tell you. Eco terrorist penguins, haunted ancient artifacts, and  that's just scratching the surface. But ,  while I don't know  how my stuff got into Ms. Lo's apartment... I know how it got away from me...it's long and complicated and had to do with dreamy man with awesome abs.

Kai knows the more she talks the more likely she is gonna tell him everything. She is a terrible liar, and she finds herself wanting to use her powers on the good police man and that makes her feel guilty...and when she feels guilty she's immediately drops into confessional mode (Catholic school never gets out of your system)

[OOC: OK, take a point of Determination for the temporary Challenge "Compulsive Confession"--that's one of the best self-compels I've ever seen. :)]

"Woah! Slow down, Doctor! Let's start with how your identification went out of your possession. Then we'll look at how it got into our vic's possession." The Lieutenant says. "Where were you the last time you had your ID?"

In reply to DainXB - GM (msg # 9):

OOC: thanks , I do enjoy Nereid . So here we go with Nereid both being confessional and trying to deflect.

Nereid's mind raced...she kinda just wanted to tell the officer who she was. Cause why do all costumed types keep  their identities secret from the authorities.? Well, other than the the fact that half the stuff we do is illegal.

Like having an artifact that was collected illegally and use the university's resources to study it...

Or  infiltrating a gambling den

Or ...

Also, if she tells him about her involvement won't she have to "out" Todd ....and is Todd us "real" name or just a really odd code name? Ithe point is , she needs to protect her friend's privacy and try to not get arrested.

So she breathes ...

I am so gonna get fired.

Sorry, so last night after too much work, a friend of mine set me up,for a blind date   With a bad boy dreamboat, sure you know the type.

Apparently he wants to meet me at Mr. Chen's and so I go and meet him...that's when I figure out this is a gambling establishment. As I was saying "I cannot be here I have a real job" Boom, it was like something out of a John Woo film....one of his early good movies not the mediocre ones he has made since lately. Guys with guns and slow motion and feathers and jazz.

I was swept out the door by the crowd and when I collected myself I had lost a shoe and my purse.

Dreamy, said "don't worry I have magnificent abs and I'll figure out where your purse went. For now let's hit a all night diner cause we look rough and the police are on their way. "

So I went home , had too little sleep and went into work trying to find a way to report my lost purse without dying of embarrassment ....and right now...I am dying of embarrassment.

She already thinks of a thousand ways this "blind date lie" is gonna cause trouble...

There's a long pause on the other end of the phone, then Lt. Moleta continues. "We'll need to know your date's name, as well, Doctor. We'll need to follow up with him." He sighs. "You said he intended to track down your purse for you? Do you know if he followed up on that in any way, or what he intended to do?"

"How well did you get to know this 'blind date'? You see, Doctor, Miss Lo apparently worked at Mr. Chen's... and now she's dead."

[OOC: :Evil GM Grin: Think of it this way, at least you've earned Todd some Determination for upcoming temporary Challenges. :)]

"That's a good idea, Doctor. I always prefer to deal with people face-to-face." The Lieutenant's voice becomes muffled, as if he's covered the receiver to speak to someone else. "Meet me in an hour at Metro Precinct in the Grove. My office is on the second floor; Homicide Division."

"Taggart." The voice on the other end of the phone sounds brusque and perhaps annoyed. As soon as you identify yourself, he instead sounds relieved. "Dr. Mahelona! I tried to call your office earlier... I'm in a bit of a bind concerning that... item... I asked you to authenticate."

"The prospective buyer has become quite insistent that I complete the transaction. You've had the item for several weeks now, surely you've come to some conclusions." Dr. Taggart waits expectantly for your response.

It's ancient and haunted. Kai is just exhausted and unable to lie anymore.

I haven't authenticated it as anything but an unknown artifact of an unknown civilization. But my my lab is now crawling with creepy things in shadows. So if someone insists so much on this they know more than they let on.

Then she gets an idea...

I have to go to the police office...it's about murder by the way so don't mess with me. But I'd love to meet this client. Tell them I have serious reservations about the item and would like to talk before they buy it.

Taggart is a bit shocked by your frankness. "Authentically ancient,then... and 'haunted'." He pauses so long that you almost think he's hung up. "I'm fairly certain that the prospective buyer wants that thing because it's 'haunted'. I doubt you'd be able to talk her out of the purchase, even if granted an audience."

He continues briskly, some relief evident in his voice. "Bring the item back to my offices as soon as possible. I have arrangements to make..." With a sharp click, the phone goes dead in your hand.

Kai grabs the artifact in her way out, stuffing it in a back pack. She walks straight out the door , only to oeak back in.

You know, I won't be  able to lecture for intro at ten,   Brent you know the material and my presentation is already on the server. How would you like to handle it so we don't have to cancel the class.

Kai shoots Brent a big smile.

[OOC: Ummm... about that artifact...
From the thread where you went to meet Todd at Mr. Chen's, E3S2 - The Shoals:

"I'll be there...see ya in 20.
Kai grabs her backpack full of haunted artifact and heads for the parking lot."

I've been assuming that the artifact was in your bag, along with your ID.]

Nereid:
After a few minutes of panicked searching, you recall tucking the fist-sized stone and it's protective wrapping into your bag rather than leave it alone in your office to do whatever it does.

But now, maybe it already has...
