E4S2 - Dr. Taggart's Office - Nereid, Todd
Lt. Moleta gets you to the warehouse district of Nimitz Bay in record time. Six blocks away from "Ancient Seas Antiques", he shuts off the lights and sirens in his otherwise-unmarked car. The parking lot behind the warehouse is deserted except for a late-model Lexus sedan. The external metal stairs gleam faintly in the light from the fixture above the business' door--a door which apears to be ajar... "OK, Doctor, we'll back your play. Call me now on your cellphone, and leave the line open. If things go bad, we'll be inside in seconds."

Okay, I have the decoy and here is the cell phone call.

After slipping the cell phone into her purse, Todd and Lt. Moleta hear her psychic link

But rest assured I won't be trusting the cell tower to be my only connection to you guys

And she takes a deep breath, exits the car and heads for Taggart's office.

Re: E4S2 - Dr. Taggart's Office - Nereid, Todd
Todd watches her wander off.

He stares at his watch. Tick... tick... tick...

"Huh. This stakeout thing kinda sucks in the excitement stakes."

He looks at the building Nereid is heading towards, scanning for hidden lookouts or electronic surveillance devices. After thirty seconds he realizes he doesn't have a clue what to actually look for, unless the bad guys are dumb enough to hang a sign out saying "hidden lookout and surveillance device here".

"Hang on a second, Lieutenant. This is gonna look a bit weird."

He closes his eyes, takes a deep breath, and morphs into his evolved form. His head expands and his hair recedes. Three breaths later he opens his eyes and looks again.

I'm using my Evolution Futuristic power to bump my intellect to 6, and I'll spend a Determination point to stunt a "scan for hidden watchers" roll.

Intellect 6 + Roll -1 = 5.

Re: E4S2 - Dr. Taggart's Office - Nereid, Todd
Nereid:

You swing the door open, noting in the process that the lock is locked--it's just that the doorframe has been splintered apart on the inside, where the deadbolt broke through. The outer office appears empty, the lights are off. The door to Taggart's inner office is standing open, and light is spilling out onto the anteroom carpet.

Todd:
Detective Makaiau slides away from you in the back seat, pressing himself up against the car door.

With your evolved intellect, you scan the parking lot and the visible sides of the warehouse. The moon is low in the sky still; combined with the streetlights, the building and external stairs cast long shadows across the empty parking spaces. The warehouse is essentially a huge cube, straight sided and flat roofed. But the exaggerated cast shadow of the roofline has a slight bump, as if someone were crouching down 5.3 meters from the northeast corner of the building. That location would give an excellent vantage point for observing the stairs and Dr. Taggart's door.

Nereid:
To your surprise, the office isn't wrecked. As you look cautiously around the door, you can see that Taggart's desk and furnishings are undisturbed--well, almost. The mahogany sideboard that Todd damaged on your first visit to "Ancient Seas Antiques" isn't aligned with the wall. It's been pushed aside, causing some of the artifacts and knick-knacks on it to topple over.

Behind the sideboard is an open doorway, and stairs leading downward. Dr. Taggart has a secret door in his office! One that's obviously not too secret any more...

[OOC: I figured. :) It costs you 1 Determination to surprise the lurking figure with your sudden leap!]

The lurking figure is a starvation-thin Asian man, wearing the robes and bead-curtained hat of an ancient Chinese scholar. He has one extraordinarily-long fingernail holding aside his bead-curtain as he peers over the cornice trying to get a glimpse of where you ran to at the foot of the wall... meaning that, just now, he doesn't know you're behind him!

You recognize this guy--and his fingernail! He was one of the Six Storms from the roof of the Pagoda Terrace Hotel!

Yeah, it wasn't really an out-of-character decision, was it? :)

Todd's eyes widen.

You son of a -- you and me got somethin' to settle.

His eyes narrow.

No time like the present.

He sneaks up behind the man, and reaches up to grab his robe and rapidly pull it downward, pinning his arms.

Roll to sneak: Coordination 6 + Roll 2 = 8.

Roll to bind: Binding 6 + Roll 1 = 7.

Nereid:
The stairs end two floors down, on the floor of the warehouse. Rows of shelves fade into the distance to the left and right. It looks like the storeroom of a museum--maybe a couple of museums. Statuary, urns, artifacts, and wrapped or boxed things that are probably similar are spread throughout. Dr. Taggart is sitting on a packing crate, facing a slender Asian woman in a red dress. A seven-foot tall red-skinned humanoid is standing off to the left, surrounded by broken bits of marble and glazed ceramic. He's idly holding a Chinese vase in one hand.

Taggart looks at you with relief. "Thank God you're here! You brought it, right?"

Todd:
The scholar, his robes now binding his arms to his sides, spins around! His black, pupil-less eyes bore into your own. "You! Again, you intrude upon affairs not your own." His voice is a rasping whisper. "Have you learned nothing?"

The scholar smiles slowly. "Then let your first lesson begin." He rasps. Suddenly he flickers, turning half-transparent like you imagine a ghost would look, and his tangled robes fall to the rooftop, leaving him garbed in loose silk pantaloons, brocade slippers, and that rediculous hat. Instinctively Todd leans backwards with a hastily uttered, ""Dude!". The fingernails miss him by the barest of margins, passing close enough to clip off a small lock of his hair.

Todd steps backwards. "So this is how it's goin' down is it? Whispering Dream, meet Bellowing Nightmare, worst student you'll ever have."

Todd rips a concrete block out of the ledge and hurls it straight at Whispering Dream's solar plexus.

Dodge: Coordination 6 + Martial Arts 1 + Roll 0 = 7. Success!

Throw: Coordination 6 + Roll +2 = 8 (with Strength of 8).

The disappearing scholar is frankly annoying.

"Fine. You want freaky? I can do freaky."

Todd concentrates, and morphs into his future-self. As he does he reaches out with his sense: smell, sound, with the barest hint of telepathy. Just enough to let him unload a mental blast if he detects anything.

That "not alone" feeling was unsettling, too. Is Whispering Dream sneaking back, or did he bring a friend? Or two?

Best not to think about the rest of the gang.

Bad guy detection mode: Awareness 6 + Roll -1 = 5.

[OOC: Whispering Dream, with his Stealth Mastery bonus, narrowly beats even future-Todd's senses.]

The smell of asphalt, salt air, seaweed, hibiscus, and burned hydrocarbons drifts through the air. The sound of distant traffic and the faint hum from the streetlamps are all you can hear. Yet you're sure that another mind is focusing it's attention upon you. A mind close by; so close it could almost touch...

You leap aside just as Whispering Dream somersaults up through the roof, flickering in and out of existence like a ghost! One long-taloned finger strikes out toward you! "Dim Mak!" the scholar hisses.

His future self may be physically weaker, but he's no less agile, and Todd somersaults away before the finger strikes.

"Ah, my erudite friend, you had a 28.8% chance of hitting me, but failed. I estimate my chance of success to be in the vicinity of 58.3%"

He let's loose a brain blast - and misses.

"Perhaps my calculations were in error."

I just realised I did my rolls in the wrong game thread! From the Earth Prime M&M game:

15:49, Today: Hardcase rolled 1,4 using d6,d6 with rolls of 1,4. Brain blast.
15:49, Today: Hardcase rolled 6,2 using d6,d6 with rolls of 6,2. Somersault to safety.

Should I keep these or reroll? If I keep them:

Coordination 6 + Acrobatics 1 + Roll 4 = 11. Success.

Mind blast 6 + Roll -3 = 3. Flop.

His movements bring him further from the cornice, and away from the fan of light coming from the nearby streetlamp. "But even in your current form, I think you are an obtuse student..."

Whispering Dream drifts, still flickering in a ghostly way; sometimes you can see right through him. You realize that he's drawing your attention, trying to distract you.

Her mind is closed to you. It's as if she's not exactly human; you can sense that she is thinking, but you can't get a grasp on what she's thinking about.

"Enough talk! This one has stalled long enough," she gestures toward Taggart. "My patience wears thin. I will take what I have been sent to retrieve: Now!" Once more her eyes crackle with purple lightning, and she stretches a hand out toward your parcel, palm up.

Todd:
Whispering Dream rasps something that sounds a little bit like laughter, and a lot like a china plate going through a paper shredder. "I prefer to teach through demonstration!" He says, and lunges toward you, index-finger outstretched!

Meanwhile, the mass of streamers resolves into the figure of a young Asian woman, spinning in mid-air and dressed solely in black silk ribbons wound around her torso and limbs. Her eyes are red. She flicks a hand, and a black ribbon curls out toward you like a bullwhip!

Now limits on using Determination still confuse me, but I think since I've failed to hurt him I can now spend Determination (depending on how broad/narrow the "tried and failed" rule is applied). Figuring he's not in immediate danger Todd leans over for a quick peek at the activity below, and spots the two cops ready to enter the building.

Huh. I'd forgotten Nereid was in there alone. The cops can help her deal with any trouble she's run into. Hopefully.

He turns back towards the flying girl, and sits on the parapet, casually taunting her. "Isn't it a bit late for you to be out, being a school night, and having rhythmic gymnastics classes in the morning?"

"Speaking of which, does the coach know you've 'borrowed' the equipment? Even from here I see you've got a ball hidden under your tunic. Or maybe you're just getting porky from too many dim sims. Hard to tell from here."

Todd gauges her reactions as leans back on his left elbow and points his right index finger at her. "I see you've stolen one of those hoops as well. From the constipated look on your face it's not hard to guess where you're hiding it -"

Now.

He morphs into his future self and fires another mental blast at her. Ineptly.

Evolution power: mental blast 6 + Roll -2 = 4. Todd sucks at mind blasting, and I have nothing to justify spending Determination.

Her other hand flares, fingers spread, at arm's length behind her as she whips her ribbons into a twirling cloud--and sends a half-dozen of them lashing toward you as she swoops downward!

Nereid:
[OOC: Take 5 Stamina damage.]
The heavy, tasseled blade slashes across your midsection!

Zhang Jue snatches up the "artifact", stripping it of it's wrapper. She shakes the brass pineapple in Taggart's face as he cringes back. "Either she lies, or you lie, worm! Where is the stone?" Purple lighting flashes around her eyes.

Taggart tries to back away from her as she looms. "On... on the phone... she said she was bringing it! I told you the truth! She said there'd be a delay, because it was locked up as evidence in a murder..."

Zhang Jue drops the brass pineapple in Taggart's lap. "Locked. Up." She snarls, straightening to her full height. "Not for long!"

Spirals of purple lightning curl around her outstretched arms, and her long hair lifts into a waving, dark corona...

Todd transforms back to his contemporary form, reaches back for a TV antenna, and rips it out as an improvised weapon.

He thursts the antenna forward and up and twists, and the ribbons wrap it.

Huh. I can work with this.

Todd leaps into the air, spinning, and draws the girl in, wrapping her ribbons around the antenna like thread on a spool.

Prowess 6 + Martial Arts 1 + Roll 4 = 11.

Binding 6 + Roll -1 = 5. I'm just not hitting my attack rolls this fight. If I can invoke Peak Physical Perfection for a Moderate Success I will. Hey, I've been trying to find a use for that pile of Determination tokens for ages.

Todd:
[OOC: You're testing Coordination to hit (but it's a 6 too, so the math's the same). It costs you 1 Determination for a Moderate Success!]
Your impromptu "handle" on the girl jerks in your hand, as her momentum sends her slamming against the rooftop!

She hisses in pain at the impact, baring pointed teeth. With a shrugging motion, she yanks at the ribbons twisted around the antenna. There's a series of faint tinks as two dozen short segments of steel tubing fall to the roof, severed by the razor ribbons. You're left holding a baseball-bat length of antenna pole.

The demon-girl clambers unsteadily to her feet, panting shallowly as if breathing hurts. She cocks her head, as if listening to a voice only she can hear. Then her ribbons gather around her, still holding onto Whispering Dream's unconscious form. Grimacing, she pirouettes, soaring upward!

That's when you hear a gunshot from inside the warehouse!

Nereid:
Lt. Moleta and Det. Makaiau storm into the warehouse, down the stairs you followed. You hear the Lieutenant shout "Freeze, Police!" from behind you, and someone fires a gun at the oni! A bullet to the chest seems barely an inconvenience to it; you're pretty sure (close as you are) that the bullet squashed against his skin and dropped to the floor!

Without looking he flings the remaining bit of antennae at the back of ribbon girl's head and swings over the ledge and into the open window below.

...if it wasn't open before it is now.

Last shot at ribbon girl.

Coordination 6 + Roll -1 = 5.

Oh, well. Third time lucky.

Nereid:
Your blast strikes Zhang Jue, who staggers back a step, her eyes going rather blank--then, wreathed in crackling purple lightning, she vanishes!

Taggart dives for cover behind a wooden crate as the police storm his warehouse...

Todd:
You enter feet first through the high, formerly closed, windows that in daylight allow natural illumination and ventilation for the warehouse. Thirty feet below you (and approaching rapidly) you see rows of shelves holding boxes and even some crates. In the shadowy corners of the warehouse are separate rooms shut with heavy padlocks.

Below, you see your mysterious "woman in red", Zhang Jue, vanish in a ball of twisting purple lightning bolts as Nereid's pendant flares in a different shade of purple! "Good Cop" and "Bad Cop" are at the foot of a flight of stairs, "Good Cop" holding up his badge and "Bad Cop" with his pistol in a two-handed firing stance--the echo of his gunshot totally spoiled the crash of your dramatic entrance.

The giant red guy he's shooting at raises his horse-beheading polearm and rams the butt into the floor, bracing it to skewer you as you land!

[OOC: Defend against Prowess 9! That blade does 5 Stamina on a hit.]

"Awww, maaaaaan..."

Todd twists as best he can, but he's on a ballistic trajectory that doesn't give him much to work with. He barely avoids being impaled, but the blade slices across his ribs and stomach, and Todd drops to the floor, badly hurt.

He lands, hard, a burning pain threatening to overwhelm him as he fights to stay conscious.

Prowess 6 + Martial Arts 1 + Roll -3 = 4.

This is a massive success for the giant red guy. I still have 3 Stamina so he doesn't kill me, and my Strength 8 vs 5 Damage means I barely avoid being stunned for one page.

Even so - ouch.

Everyone:
Lt. Moleta draws his pistol, and joins the Detective in firing on the giant oni! The bullets slap against his resilient flesh, flattening--then falling to the floor. Detective Makaiau mutters "Just once, I wish the weird s#*t wasn't immune to bullets."

The giant grins, lips stretching around his yellow tusks, and twirls his polearm into a blurring circle of death, spattering everything nearby with tiny droplets of Todd's blood!

So...I haven't gotten much left in the tank, but I think I might be able to distract him for you to get in a good punch. That is unless I can just make him so sad he gives up.

Nereid begins to sing, a melodic sad song...the others feel the sadness but the giant is the target of the song.

Sweaty and bleeding, Todd grits his teeth and pushes himself to his knees.

"Hey, big sunburned dude. You're a real badass facing a defenseless girl."

He brings his right foot forward and rests his arm on his knee, still mouthing off. "'Course you probably hit like a girl, which is why you need that giant-sized Gillette."

Then the left foot. Wobbling, but standing.

"Wanna put it down and see if you have the stones to go a few rounds with a damaged little screw-up like me?"

Using my Resentful Outcast Social Challenge to give big and ugly the first shot, and pick up another point of Determination.

By the way, did my parting shot at Ribbons (msg #42) fluke a hit?

Todd:
[OOC: It did! (Her Coordination is less than her Prowess.) Though you're not sure how much damage you did--you were busy diving through a closed window at the time. Also, gain 1 Determination for Resentful Social Outcast.]

The two detectives are flanking the door to the stairs, squeezing off shot after shot at the bulletproof oni. A couple ricochet off his whirling weapon, causing Taggart to shriek like a girl and dive flat on the floor behind a crate big enough to hold a coffin--or a sarcophagus.

When you speak, the spinning blade stops so suddenly that you expect the shaft to crack. The oni looks down at you, spittle dripping from his yellowed tusks, and casually flings his weapon at the floor in front of Nereid. The head buries itself a foot into the concrete. Then, crouching like a wrestler, he swings his arms wide for a grab and lunges at you!

[OOC: Since you're Luring the oni into attacking you instead of Nereid, he gets +2 against you--but if he misses you get to choose what behind you gets damaged instead. Support beam, electrical junction box, whatever... :)]

[OOC: Defend against a difficulty of 9 (His Prowess of 7, +2). Since this is a Wrestling attack, you can defend with the highest of your Prowess, Coordination, or Strength. That's gonna surprise him.]

Re: E4S2 - Dr. Taggart's Office - Nereid, Todd
The oni charges, a terrifying unstoppable force of supernature.

Todd, beyond pissed off, just doesn't care. He grabs the oni's tusks and drops, pulling the oni forward, plants his feet into the demon's gut, and combines the oni's momentum with his hyper-trained strength. The net effect is to propel the demon upside-down and backwards into the electrical junction box.

Which explodes in a highly satisfying shower of sparks.

It's the oni's turn to have a bad day.

The electrical junction box is too good to pass on.

Strength 8 + Roll 5 = 13. Major success!

The dice gods' fickleness finally favours Todd!

Re: E4S2 - Dr. Taggart's Office - Nereid, Todd
Todd, Nereid:
The oni's impact shreds the junction box and shatters the cinder-block wall behind it. He lands face up on the parking lot outside. His eyes are open, but it doesn't look like anyone is home right now...

Inside the warehouse, the lights are out. Detective Makaiau advances slowly toward the hole in the wall, keeping his gun trained on the oni. Lt. Moleta is on his radio requesting backup.

Dr. Taggart climbs out from behind his hiding place. "My building! I'm never going to get any money for the artifact, thanks to you--and now you've wrecked the wall!" Then he realizes that he's blustering in front of (highly distracted) police officers. "Not my building, I mean... I just rent office space here... I had no idea that those old stairs were even there... and none of this stuff belongs to me..."

Fortunately for Taggart, Lt. Moleta is concentrating on the radio. It turns out he has bigger problems. "Dr. Mahelona, you were right; the woman who vanished reappeared--she's ransacking the evidence room at the precinct!"

"Look out!" Det. Makaiau shouts, as the unconscious oni is suddenly wreathed in curling purple lightning. He vanishes with a crack, leaving behind a smell like burnt tea.

[OOC: At this point, unless you'd prefer otherwise, I'd like to fast-forward you both to all the fun Ian and Time Keeper are having "tomorrow morning". :) ]

Taggart gets shoved into the back of Lt. Moleta's car, protesting "But I'm the victim here!" You run lights and sirens all the way back to the precinct--but the damage is done. The evidence lock-up is a shambles, and the artifact is no where to be found.

You're both sure that you haven't seen the last of that thing, or of Zhang Jue and her Six Storms--but following up on the identity of Taggart's client will have to wait until the police are through questioning him about the smuggled antiquities in the warehouse he claims not to own...

[OOC: Post any follow-up you'd like here. Then, after a night's sleep (which you could surely use at this point) I'll insert you both into E4S6 - Akamai City!]
