E5S1 - Kuailo Marina - Nereid, Todd, Ian
Everyone:
It's been a couple of weeks since the capture of the Tinker. All of you, as well as the rest of the city's heroes, were honored by Mayor Arakawa at a ceremony in front of City Hall, and broadcast on DTN. There was a little drama; Storm Warden refused to appear unless Tropic Thunder was also included; TechKnight was invited, but didn't show up... All-in-all, though, it was a lovely occasion.

Akamai City is recovering well; contractors and glaziers have been making a killing repairing the damage done by the Tinker's army and Brain Coral's psi-shockwave, and the idea of "supervillain insurance" is getting a lot of attention from everybody.

You're gathered at the Kuailo Marina, where Detective Nathaniel Jones moors his dilapidated houseboat, the Driftwood. Detective Jones is dressed casually, in a Hawaiian shirt and khakis. "Welcome aboard, folks. Grab a seat there by Ian's speaker system, and I'll get you a couple of beers. Uh... Todd; are you old enough to drink?"

Ian:
Your contact Detective Jones advised you that Nereid had a mystery she wished to discuss with you. You can only hope that she isn't looking for advice concerning Beeline; human and near-human romantic relationships are very confusing...

Amm-Fibian has invited his new dolphin friend to sit in on the occasion.

Detective Jones gets a shrug. "Don't drink anyhow, thanks. Got some carrot juice?"

Todd:
Nate Jones shakes his head, muttering "Kids these days and their health food..." under his breath--but he comes up with bottled apple juice. "This is as close to carrot juice as I've got."

Nereid:
The detective settles his bulk into a deck chair near a jury-rigged hydrophone speaker. "I put this together so Ian doesn't have to hijack somebody just to talk to me. The neighbors were starting to get antsy about that... He's made a few improvements since then; now I don't know half of what it does." He gestures toward you with the neck of his beer bottle. "It's your meeting; I guess you have the floor."

Ian:
[OOC: Sharkbaiter is actually over in the other thread. :)]
Your call through the dolphin population went unanswered. Perhaps the pod defender is otherwise occupied...

From your position near the stern of the Driftwood, you can see the hulls of other houseboats in the marina, and the legs of human children kicking in the water as they play on the dock.

Todd heads over to Nereid, apple juice in hand, and flops into a chair.

In reply to Todd (msg # 5):

Taking the detective up on the offer of a beer, Nereid begins her tale.

Ian, though it seems like ages ago, do you remember the trip to my "colleague" of limited ethics Dr. Taggart. He had a strange and ancient  artifact that he asked me to research.

Well, when I took the artifact back to the university...strange things began to happen. People near the artifact were feeling senses of dread and becoming frightened. One of my lab assistants even felt as if she was being choked.

That's when I removed the idol from the lab and went on a misadventure with Todd. On our trip, the artifact was stolen.

the thief would be found strangled in her room and no evidence of another person being there.

As the detective and I were going over the crime scene we began to feel this intense fear and we were attacked...by a shadow creature.

But the shadow creature's shape looked like you.

So, I was wondering if artifacts that contain fear generating shadow guardians were something from your people's past?

OOC: I'd like for Ian to do his best Sherlock Holmes on this:
Amm-Fibian rolled 6,6 using d6,d6
Int +9
Investigation +2 (if it applies)
Plus I'll tag "Seas Greatest Detective" if that applies at all.

Ian:
From what she describes, (she also has pictures and other lab data) the artifact doesn't seem like it was carved by your people at all--the workmanship is too crude. From the broken bottom edge, it seems to be the head of a larger statue. Nereid's data shows that it was carved between six and ten thousand years ago. Your people ruled the Earth during the Permian Period, two hundred and fifty million years ago. The artifact was carved by humans.

It undeniably looks like one of your people, though. Despite the crudeness of the carving, it's clearly intended to be a specific individual. The narrowed eye-slits and arcing naso-cranial ridge give him a sinister expression... One you recognize!

[OOC: On that fateful day, when the gadget Dr. Taggart was using on behalf of Emperor Penguin to detect Aquan artifacts accidentally pulled you from the sea cave where you were investigating a crime into your unimaginably distant future; what Aquan criminal were you hunting? And what terrible crime set you on his trail?]
