E5S5 - Chek Lap Kok Airport - Todd, Nereid, Ian
Fifteen and a half hours on a jumbo jet takes you from Honolulu to Hong Kong. Concourse One at Chek Lap Kok Airport is vast. You could fit more than one football field in here, and still have space left over.

There's a reason it's so big; it has to be to handle the crowds! Coming down the escallators you can see below you a sea of humanity--one big enough to have visible tides as swarms of people move through the crowd toward baggage claim areas and ticketing kiosks.

Detective Jones leads you past the regular baggage claim areas, following a printout pulled from his jacket pocket and the convenient multilingual signs. "Freight claim is down here, according to this..."

Six jumpsuited laborers with powered pallet-jacks are guiding a steel shipping container beaded with condensation down the broad hallway. An Asian woman in a black business suit is striding alongside. "Agent Jones! Agent Harper Kwai-Pun. I'm pleased to make your acquaintance." She says, extending a hand.

Ian:
Traveling for fifteen and a half hours in what amounts to a water-filled triple-wide coffin next to your dry-suit has given you plenty of time to read on a MIB-issue waterproof tablet, and to plan.

[OOC: Test Intellect vs a Difficulty of 9. Criminology Expert gives you a +2.]

The slosh and clunk of your steel aquarium's arrival on the ground means that it's finally time to shut off the aerator, suit up, and exit.

Re: E5S5 - Chek Lap Kok Airport - Todd, Nereid, Ian
Wandering through the concourse Todd thinks back to the flight. He'd made the most of the time, establishing a meditative connection with μ-90 and seeking his assistance with the Hong Kong job.

It didn't help much.

"Love to help, but geez. You're a lot closer to 21st century China than I am. If you spent more time hitting the books instead of the waves you might be better prepared for Hong Kong," μ-90 lectures.

"Yeah, thanks for pointing out the obvious,"Todd sends back. "I find whiney snark soooo useful."

"I'll see what I can find out, but eventually you're going to have to get off your butt and use your brain. You're great at the PT regime, exceptionally so. Time for lifting weights or doing four hours of MMA training? Sure, you can do that.

"But you're beyond lazy when it comes to actually thinking. Or do you want to be a dishwashing super-powered hanger-on for the rest of your life?
," μ-90 continues. Only this time he flashes an image of Todd as an old man, impoverished, battered, living in hovel, alone.

Todd bites off his habitual retort. He's heard μ-90 pay out a hundred times, but the image... He feels the truth of it. And doesn't like what he sees.

Is that what I'm heading for? Or - maybe  it's time to stop being a screw-off...

"You're right. I need more self-discipline, and long-term focus. Step one: when I return home I'll go back to night school."

μ-90 doesn't respond for several long seconds. "Good start. Really good start. As for the other stuff, tune it after you settle in Hong Kong, Gramps."

As Todd's attention comes back to the moment he thinks maybe the flight was more useful than it first appeared.

Using this to narratively justify bumping Martial Arts to Master (+2), adding Wrestling, and increasing Willpower +1 to 4.

Todd:

You emerge, dripping, from your freight container, carrying the waterproofed computing device Detective Jones provided to you. The freight workers all step away slowly...

More than a bit sleep-deprived, Todd grumbles quietly to himself as he collecting the bags, grabbing with the right hand and adding to the pile in the left.

Oh, right, ignore the rest of us because we don't have a Pee-Aitch-Freakin'-Dee. Especially dumb-ass me, who's just the freakin' bag carrier.

his vision blocked by the stack of suitcases (If Nereid's so goddamn <i>smart how come she can't pack light? How  much luggage does that woman need?</i>) Todd doesn't see the baggage cart he steps into, shins-first.

The sharp bang! draws the attention of the crowd. Not as much as the sight and sound of the baggage cart taking flight after Todd kicks it head-height through the terminal. The cart speeds through the crowd, missing passengers and staff by inches, until it smashes through the windows overlooking the taxi rank, and lands upended in the roadway.

"Uhhhhh..."

It took me a while to think of a suitably- Todd-like action for the Determination point. ^_^

Everyone:
Security is converging on the freight area with commendable speed, in response to Todd's flying baggage cart. Agent Kwai-Pun glares at Detective Jones, then says. "Perhaps we should move briskly, now. I have a car waiting..." The two MIB agents display their badges, and Agent Kwai-Pun drops into rapid-fire Chinese as she speaks to the security guards.

Todd:
You're carrying enough luggage now to be sort of a spectacle, and you're pretty sure that security thinks you're in the custody of the MIB... but you make it to the terminal's exit doors. A couple of people are taking cell phone videos of you being "escorted" out to a black SUV.

[OOC: Oh, yeah, you earned that point of Determination. :) ]

Re: E5S5 - Chek Lap Kok Airport - Todd, Nereid, Ian
Everyone:
The airport is on a (mostly artificial) island offshore of Hong Kong proper. Agent Kwai-Pun's black SUV has to take the causeway along with all the other traffic. "Many apologies, but this is actually relatively light traffic for this time of day..." she says, as all six lanes slow to a crawl in both directions. Nearly half the vehicles you see are blue-liveried Lantau Island taxis.

Nereid:
Lantau Island... you've heard of several famous Neolithic sites on Lantau Island. Maybe you'll have time to check them out while you're here...

Ian:
The SUV rolls slowly forward along the causeway, moving it's own length every few minutes. Given the comparatively-high speed of electronic technology, the phone videos of Todd's escapade at the airport have had plenty of time to "go viral" as the humans say. Your arrival in this place has not been circumspect...

Todd:
Staring moodily out of the SUV's window at the faster-moving boat traffic, you catch sight of something interesting. There's a... what-do-you-call-it... a sampan? A boat with folding fan-sails anyway. The thing about sailboats is, they move with the wind, and this one isn't. Probably because of the woman dressed all in red standing in the prow!

Hong Kong is weird.

A rather bored Todd turns away from the water, staring at the car in front of him. At bumper-to-bumper speeds he has plenty of time to watch the kids playing cards in the backseat.

Hope they're having fun. More fun than I'm having. Not that playing cards is all that great. Last time I was involved in a card game -

He stops cold.

Without a word he unbuckles his seat belt, opens the door, and weaves his way through the barely-moving traffic towards the edge of the road. He gauges the range and speed, holds a finger up to check the breeze, crouches - and jumps towards the boat.

Does my lack of useful communication and leaping into trouble tick the resentful outcast box again? Not that the answer has any bearing on Todd's impulsiveness. :)

Neither of you are certain at first what your impulsive team-mate has in mind as his leap sends him soaring into the air above the Ma Wan channel, but projecting his arc toward it's target zeroes you both in on Zhang Jue!

You land--hard--on the deck of the sampan. The weathered wood cracks beneath your feet, but it holds. The old man at the tiller looks shocked.

Standing in a Titanic-like pose in the prow Zhang Jue, arms outstretched, proclaims "讓門戶被打開!" You're pretty sure she didn't just say "I'm flying!"; her attention is focused intently on the bridge as purple fire glows around her eyes.

[OOC: For some reason, I'm picturing Todd in a Jack Burton t-shirt for this scene. :)]

Ian, Nereid:
Behind the SUV, a ring of purple sparks opens in the air inches above the pavement. Out of it roar a pair of eight foot tall blue-skinned Chinese demons riding motorcycles!

Agent Kwai-Pun says "慈悲的佛陀!"* and slams on the accellerator. The SUV weaves in-and-out of traffic, but things like this tend to cause people to get out of your way...

Detective Jones, twisted backward in the front passenger seat says "What the Hell?" and draws his pistol. Agent Kwai-Pun switches back to English. "Blue Devil Tong. This is bad..."

Ian:
Your mathematical reasoning is, as always, outstanding! As the SUV comes off the end of the Tsing Ma bridge and into the streets of Hong Kong proper, your push-cart collides with the bicycle-powered bird transportation device--and the two motorcycles!

One demonic rider catapults into the air in a cloud of cages and feathers. The other wipes out on a slick of smashed melons, laying his bike down in a trail of sparks!

That one clambers unsteadily to it's clawed feet, brushing pulped produce from it's eyes and roaring in anger and frustration as it seeks the person responsible for it's current situation...

[OOC: You can Test Coordination vs a Difficulty of 3 to "blend in" and avoid notice, if you like.]

Nereid:
There's a loud thump and the top of the SUV crushes in a bit. With a sound of tearing metal, yellow-clawed blue fingers rip through the roof, allowing you a close-up view of an angry blue face with the remains of an exotic bird hanging out between it's drool-wet tusks!

Agent Jones' pistol is incredibly loud in such a confined space... It also doesn't seem to do much to the angry demon--who's breath, up close, smells like Kung Pao sewage.

[OOC: Test Coordination vs a Difficulty of 5. Those claws (and that breath!) do 4 Stamina on a hit.]

The blue demon collapses, beady red eyes rolling upward, half in and half out of the ripped-open SUV roof. Thick, gelatinous drips of spittle hang from it's yellow tusks. It's horrid breath moves in and out in a rumbling snore...

Todd:
You're pretty sure you heard a jawbone crack as your kick connected with the demon's chin. He flies backward about a block and a half before splashing into the bay.

Behind you, Zhang Jue is incensed. "That's no way to treat my uncle Ye!" she says, struggling against the slatted sail. "Fortunately, I have a very big family..."

True to her words, the rest of the sampan's crew surge up from below decks. Four more blue demons--and these are weilding hook-swords! With well-practiced martial arts tactics they split into teams, two coming from your left, and two from your right!

[OOC: Gain 2 Determination that I'm spending to activate two of the demon's "Brothers in More Than Arms" Qualities. That gives them each Advantage that I'm spending to add +2 to their partner's Prowess. Defend twice against Prowesses of 6! The hook-swords do 4 Stamina on a hit!]

He rips off six feet of railing, snaps it in two, and adopts a left-guard-forward, right-raised-behind fighting stance.

He grins. "Hong Kong, baby! Bring it on!"

The demons attack, and Todd counters, improvised batons and hook-swords whirling with blinding speeds.

"Chow Yun Fat!" Todd cries, as he blocks the first onslaught.

The demons fall back, regroup, and return to the attack with even greater ferocity. Todd responds with even faster blocks and parries.

"Jet Li!" he shouts as he turns the final blow.

He steps back, unharmed, the demons staring in disbelief.

"We're just gettin' started, assholes,"  he says, grin wider than ever. "<tr>Bruce fucking Lee!!!</tr>"

Human cultures are many and varied--but you've had some time to study them. You remember reading something somewhere...

"'Yaoguai' are mostly malevolent animal spirits or fallen celestial beings that have acquired magical powers through the practice of Taoism. The evil ones are usually referred to as gui (literally, "freak") or m (literally, "demon") in Chinese. Their greatest goal is achieving immortality and thus deification."

A Chinese apothecary is easy to find in Hong Kong. This is a residential area; cramped multi-story apartment blocks for the port laborers and their families. Mixed in, of course, are small shopping areas and markets. Herbal and astringent smells lead you to the place you seek.

He drops off pretty easily--given that you're pushing him up, then letting gravity do most of the work. :) The instant he's clear of the SUV, Agent Kwai-Pun floors it, skidding into a 180-degree turn and roaring back down the highway toward the bridge!

Ian:
The man behind the counter is frail and old, with long thin white mustaches drooping on either side of his upper lip. "Cinnabar!" He says. "The true Yin inside the Yang. Paint your body with it, and demons will not come before you."

He putters around in the thousand or so tiny drawers behind him, and comes out with a small plastic bag of dark red crystals. The bag is clearly marked 有毒!硫化汞* in large red characters. "I can grind it fine, compound it into an ointment for you. Very efficacious!" He says. "Ready tomorrow morning, first thing."

Ian:
"You worried about cancer, or demons? You need to get a sense of priorities!" He grouses--but he mills down a half dozen cinnabar crystals in a hand mill, producing a fine dust. He sifts it into a ziplock baggie and names a price.

The produce business must be good around here; your host's wallet has the necessary local Hong Kong Dollars to pay the apothecary, and more.

[OOC: Test Coordination vs a Difficulty of 5. The demon is out there on the streets somewhere, sniffing for your trail... You can take +2 for Criminology Expert, since you've been trying not to leave one.]

Nereid:
Sai Tso Wan Road dead ends at the HK United dockyard. The SUV goes off-road and races along the water's edge, beneath the towering bridge supports! "This is as close as I can get to that boat!" Agent Kwai-Pun says. "我希望你知道你在做什么..." she adds, under her breath.

The sampan is right where you left it--and with the sail wrapped mostly around Zhang Jue, it's not going anywhere fast. It's about a hundred and fifty yards from shore, and Todd's on the mid-deck surrounded by three blue demons with swords!

Todd:
The demons egg each other on--nobody wants to go first. It takes them a second or so, then they decide to attack all at once!

[OOC: Defend three times against Prowesses of 4! The hook-swords do 4 Stamina on a hit!]

Meanwhile, Zhang Jue snarls "I tire of this farce! 五气息的龙!" and suddenly purple and orange fire spurts out between the slats of the sail, incinerating it and leaving the woman in red surrounded by whistling, whirling fireballs!

Bursting into flame is a highly effective distraction.

With impeccably bad timing Todd gaps at Zhang Jue just as the demons attack. He hastily steps backwards as they charage, catching his foot in a rope and tripping just as the demons swing their weapons.

His stumble works out better than expected.

Todd's head slams to the deck a millisecond before a sword rips through the air where his nose has been. The tangled ropes pull him to the right as the second sword jams into the deck next to his spine. Todd then pulls his knees up as the third sword slices off the sole of his right shoe.

Todd continues rolling to the stern, and untangles himself an instant before falling in the water. He recovers his balance, taking a moment to glance at his destroyed shoe.

"Oh, maaaan!" he laments. "My Olukai's cost me a hundred and ten bucks!"

His eyes narrow on the demons. "You guys owe me a new pair of shoes!" he says, snapping the rope around the demons.

First dodge: Prowess 6 + Martial Arts 2 + Roll -3 = 5.
Second dodge: Prowess 6 + Martial Arts 2 + Roll -2 = 6.
Third dodge: Prowess 6 + Martial Arts 2 + Roll 2 = 10.

Followed by a binding attack: Binding 6 + Roll 0 = 6.

Can I spend Determination to create a "bind multiple targets" stunt?

You keep expecting the shop door to be kicked in by the demon on your trail... but it doesn't happen. Perhaps the rich medley of medicinal odors surrounding the apothecary shop mask produce man's distinctive scent?

"Cinnabar powder is more dangerous than an ointment--very bad if you get the dust inside your lungs!" The old man cautions. (Mammalian lungs seem so inconvenient, from an aquatic point of view.)

Todd:
[OOC: Yep! 1 Determination to Stunt the Burst Extra, allowing you to snag all three in the same Bind. Love the narration, btw!]

The water isn't as warm as Hawai'ian surf, but it's not too bad. Behind you, on shore, Detective Smith and Agent Kwai-Pun exit the SUV. Detective Smith starts to gather up your clothes for you, then hurriedly decides to let Agent Kwai-Pun to do it. Ahead of you, you can see Todd's head bobbing above the lapping waves.

[OOC: The Olympic women's world record for 100m freestyle is just under a minute. I figure It'll take you just under two minutes to cover the 150m to the sampan. That's about the length of this entire panel. :)]

Todd:
On deck, the tangled demons struggle to slash at the ropes with their hook-swords, but that's going to take them a while.

Zhang Jue, on the other hand, is free to act. She juggles the five fireballs that surround her, and her eyes flash purple fire. "This is why I am called 'daughter of demons', mortal!" She lobs each ball gently upward, then they dive at full speed toward you!

The fireballs come in fast - too fast. Todd leaps, but fails to get clear before they strike!

Coord 6 + Acro 1 + Roll 0 = 7. Marginal success for Zhang Jue. I could probably spend determination to avoid it, but let's up the stakes!

Todd falls backwards into the boat, shirt burning. He tears it off and throws it over the side.

"I loved that shirt. Got it at the Billabong Pipeline Masters last year."

He rises to crouch and steps forward. "Allright, 'daughter of demons'", he says as he lifts the bundled demons. "Let's see how you cope with this!!!"

He throws the bundled demons at the sorceress. Hard.

I will spend determination here, using my "Resentful Outcast" quality.

Coord 6 + Roll -4 + Det 2 = 4. Bollocks.

You dive clear in time and avoid the 7 Stamina damage. That puts you in the water with 4 Stamina.

OR: Take the damage, hit the water unconscious, then spend 1 Determination to invoke Peak Physical Perfection to gain an Advantage. Another way to use an Advantage is:
Recover: Regain Stamina equal to the higher of your Strength or
Willpower or eliminate the ongoing effects of a power, as specified
   in the power description.

The water puts out the flames and shocks you back awake. You're burned, and probably naked, and in the water; but with 8 Stamina.

[OOC: Prowess 6 +2 =8. Major Success vs the Blue Demons, Moderate Success vs Zhang Jue--and a Marginal Success vs Nereid!]

The three demons cartwheel out of the water like you bowled a strike! The surge of water rips upward, sizzling as it knocks Zhang Jue's fireballs out of the air around her! Suddenly drenched, she plummets like a stone!

Ian:
As the demons are sent flying, they're very easy to see! "Tuning" the TUNA to mesh with a non-human, demon neuro-system takes only a second.

[OOC: Massive Success! You have a demon Controlled for the rest of the Chapter if you want.]

The sensation (even second-hand) of flying is the pleasant sensation of swimming weightless--refreshing after hours in the Land Suit. Your new sense of smell is astonishing--and so are the number of industrial pollutants it can detect in the water of the bay! You can also detect the signature fragrance Nereid uses, and the equally-distinctive smell emitted by Todd. However, the most significant sensation of brain-jumping the demon is the pounding headache and dizziness from the concussion Todd just gave it. Even without the effect of the TUNA, it's reeling and barely conscious!

Nereid:
You hear Todd's warning and your surfer's reflexes take over, sending you limp and unresisting in the water, just like you do when a pipeline you're riding is about to wipe you out! This feels a lot like that...

[OOC: Take 4 Stamina from the impact of Todd's Ty'daal impersonation.]

Everyone:
Zhang Jue claps her hands as she falls, and suddenly a ring of purple sparks appears just above the water's surface! "Fools! This is not over--the Feather Empress will see to that!" She falls through the ring--and suspiciously, there is no splash...

One of the other two blue demons is swimming strongly away from the fight, dragging the other behind him.

Halfway through the jump Todd hears Neried's advice. The less-impulsive side of his personality regretfully realises she's probably right, but gravity doesn't give him the  option to follow it.

He plummets towards the now lethal-looking portal just as it's closing.

On the edge of panic he rolls into as small a ball as possible, minimizing his wind resistance, and praying it's enough to get him through the rapidly shrinking gap.

Coordination 6 + Acrobatics 1 + Roll 3 = 10.
