E5S11 - Tung Lung Chau - Ian, Nereid, Todd
Everyone:
The MIB provides you with transportation--a black "harbor patrol"-style vessel. Agent Kwai-Pun and Detective Jones confer with the pilot in the cabin, while a member of the crew scrambles to find clothes for Todd.

Todd:
Sizes seem to run a bit small in this part of the world; the blue uniform shirt (complete with epaulets) barely fastens across your chest. The pants fit a little better, as long as you don't try any deep knee-bends...

Everyone:
The trip across Victoria Harbor doesn't take long--it's amazing how much water traffic gets out of your way when you're in an official ship. Still, it's been a busy day; you're all feeling weirdly jet-lagged, and the sun is low behind you, casting your shadows far out across the water.

The ancient rock carvings are on the west side of the island, opposite the old fort that guarded the entrance to the harbor during the days of the last Emperors of China. The shore here is steep, almost a cliff. A narrow path with a railing switch-backs down from the top to a heavy plexiglass screen that protects the prehistoric carving from the weather. Beyond the screen, the path becomes a bridge, avoiding a treacherous cavern-like gap in the cliff-face.

[OOC: visual reference: http://www.heritage.gov.hk/en/...ngs/monuments_03.htm]

Detective Jones sticks his head out of the cabin. "Agent Kwai-Pun says that the Captain doesn't want to get any closer to shore--the water here isn't deep, and the rocks are dangerous."

Edit: Nereid nods, and Todd picks her up, holds her in a safe position, jumps to shore.

I can retcon this if anybody does want Todd to carry them to the island.

Re: E5S11 - Tung Lung Chau - Ian, Nereid, Todd
Ian:
Out here on the edge of the harbor, the ocean tastes less like diesel fuel and more like... ocean. It's refreshing. Small fish dart around, hunting for evening insects lighting on the water's surface.

The boat captain was certainly correct about the seabed; jagged rocks jut upward in several places, any one of which could completely gut a surface vessel. A cooler current of water swirls toward the cavern-like undercut in the cliff face, just to the left of the spot Nereid pointed out as the location of the prehistoric carvings.

Todd, Nereid:
You land just above the upward switch-back of the walkway. The island is pretty barren; just grass and some shrubby trees, and exposed rocks covered with patches of lichen. The walkway is concrete, with handrails made of steel pipe--very solid. The setting sun glints off the thick Plexiglas plates below you that protect the ancient site.

Meanwhile, back on the boat:
Detective Smith grumbles. "Just once, maybe they'd think to take a radio..." He waves his arms in Nereid's direction. "If you can read my mind from over there, Agent Kwai-Pun says that there shouldn't be any tourists on the island after nightfall. The historic fort on the other side and the old Hung Shing Temple up the coast both close at dusk."

Ian:
There's a cool rush of water coming out into the ocean from the half-cave. Swimming into the shadow of the foot-bridge above, you can taste fresh water. There's a natural spring there; perhaps when the sea level was lower, it shaped the half-cave by erosion. The prehistoric humans who lived here knew about it, beneath the moss there are symbols engraved into the stone surrounding the spring; repeating right angles pointing in various directions, criss-crossing. You saw something like it in the Chinese pharmacy earlier; it's a ward against evil.

Nereid:
[OOC: Just 1 for the Stunt.]
Psychically, you get a sense that you are being watched--and not just by Detective Jones through binoculars. The island should be uninhabited at this time of day, but as the sun sets, the sense gets even stronger. It's definitely coming from down below you, in the area of the ancient carvings.

Ian:
The fresh water spills from a crevice that you can barely wriggle into. It doesn't seem "evil" in any way, despite the wardings--it's fresher and cleaner than any water you've encountered in Hong Kong up to this point.

You're perhaps a little more than twice your own body-length into the crevice when you feel a strange sensation sweep over you... Not exactly the same sensation as when you were pulled through time to this era--but not exactly different from that, either!

Todd:
Keeping Ian in sight means going down on the walkway-bridge, facing the ocean, and leaning waaay over... It puts your back to the prehistoric carvings just as the sun dips below the horizon.

Nereid:
Your bad feeling is not wrong! The sensation of being watched is even stronger here on the walkway--it's as if the stylized dragon carved into the rock is looking at you. As the last rays of the setting sun hit the stone, your vision shifts! The lines engraved into the rock face spread apart, as if they were a doorway--and a pair of monstrous demonic figures are revealed! They have bright red skin, long yellow fangs, snarled white hair, and two long curling black horns. Both are dressed in tiger-pelts. "拖動他們!在羽毛皇后會很高興" One snarls, and the other leaps out to grab both of you!

[OOC: Todd and Nereid; test your choice of Prowess or Coordination vs a Difficulty of 8 to avoid being grabbed by the Mwng!]

Nereid:
You find your head tucked into the foul-smelling and hairy armpit of the Mwng! It's arm wraps around your torso tightly, pinning you against the tiger pelt it's wearing.

[OOC: You're in a partial hold. You can act at -2 to your final totals until you either break free or become fully restrained.]

Todd:
Ragged black claws on a hand the size of a ham seize you by the collar of your shirt and yank you backward! The demon's a good yard taller than you are, so you're off the ground at the moment. Craning your neck, you can see that this one's twin brother is crawling out of the newly-formed crevice in the ancient rock carving!

[OOC: You fared slightly better; you're wrestling with the demon, but at no penalty.]

Ian:
Gravity seems to fail briefly, and if it weren't for your superb sense of direction, you might have become disoriented. You don't sense danger, exactly, but something is certainly different--there's suddenly much more room around you, and the rush of the water lessens. You find yourself in a still, fresh pool, with only a slight current drawing you toward the center. The pool is rectangular, a bit bigger than what humans call "Olympic sized", and the walls are carved with curvilinear designs resembling fanciful vegetation. Bright, faintly greenish light shines down from above the water's surface...

[OOC: Anyone can go in any order! (Technically Ian isn't in combat right now, but for convenience's sake we can treat it that way.)]

[OOC: Test your choice of Prowess or Coordination vs a Difficulty of 8 to avoid being pulled into a tighter hold by the Mwng!]

Ian:
The current drawing you toward the center of the pool is a fountain. It jets a fine spray of water high into the air above the pool. Through the shimmering surface-reflection, you can see a high-ceilinged cavern, its walls partly natural and partly carved in elaborate filigreed designs that remind you of plant life. Other pools of water, each spraying their own fountain of water, flank the roadway that goes down the center of the cavern. That roadway leads to a tall pagoda, lit with sickly green fire, built partly into the back wall of the cavern.

Nereid:
The Mwng's arms are like iron bars--hairy, sweaty, stinking iron bars. It casually hefts you off the ground and scampers through the door in the rock-face!

[OOC: You're completely immobilized. You can't take any physical actions except to try and break free (using Strength or Prowess).]

Todd:
Blood spurts from the Mwng's broken nose! Purplish, slightly irridescent blood, but blood nevertheless. It howls in pain and fury, grabbing at it's face with one yellow-clawed hand. With the other--the one still gripping the back of your neck--it pounds you into the plexiglass screen protecting the prehistoric carvings!

[OOC: Test Prowess vs a Difficulty of 8! It does 5 Stamina on a hit.]

Ian:
There are several lifeforms nearby; Two Foo Dogs flank the entrance to the distant pagoda, a pair of hulking red-skinned demon-creatures holding sputtering green torches and heavy iron clubs are making their way up the roadway, and a third demon is picking it's way down the irregular steps at the near end of the cavern--holding a barely-struggling Nereid in it's muscular arms!

Getting smashed into plexiglass is not Todd's idea of a fun trip to the island. He grabs the back of the Mwng's head and pulls it into his chest. The off-balance Mwng topples forward, blunting its attack.

Todd leans close to the Mwng, grins, and whispers, "my turn, punk." Followed by a sharp wrenching of its neck, twisting it towards the ground.

Prowess 6 + Wrestling 1 + Roll 2 = 9. Safe!

Prowess 6 + Wrestling 1 + Roll 2 = 9. Take that.

Todd:
The weatherproof, practically bulletproof plexiglas shatters as you slam into it--and drag the Mwng with you! As you hit the concrete pathway, you flip over so that you're on top, wrenching at its neck. Crack! The demon's arms and legs shudder and spasm, and the entire monster begins to emit a nauseating green vapor. It's deflating, or dissolving, beneath you!

Looking up, you realize that Nereid, and your demon's twin brother, are both gone--and the glowing gap in the cliff-face is beginning to close!

Ian:
Your viewpoint is suddenly vertiginous--"your" eyes are eight feet off the ground at minimum--and inefficiently spaced for binocular vision besides. The eyes, and the gangling muscle-bound limbs aren't your only problem; the Mwng's brain is very small and lacking in complexity. Your great intellect feels crammed in, as if its been stuffed into a space much too tiny to contain it.

Two more white-haired, red-skinned Mwngs are trotting up the roadway in your direction, hooting and snarling inquisitively.

[OOC: You have control of the Mwng for the rest of the page; then you'll have to test again.]

Nereid:
Head-down is a difficult position from which to assess a situation. Nevertheless, you can get an idea of the locale; you're being carried down a path that's almost a road between pools of water, each pool hosting its own fountain of water. The roadway leads to a tall pagoda built partly into the back wall of the cavern. Green flickering flames show within its windows.

Ian:
Moving briskly to put the two Mwng behind you, you find yourself heading back past the pool your actual body is submerged in, and heading closer to the underground pagoda.

Todd:
You leap through the doorway alongside the last rays of the setting sun--and the doorway vanishes behind you. That might be bad...

Nereid is visible, tossed over the shoulder of the demon that grabbed her, who is heading downslope at a trot. That might be bad too...

However, what is definitely bad are the two big, red, yellow-fanged Mwng-demons directly ahead of you! One points a claw in your direction and growls "入侵者!" Then they both charge, leaf-bladed halberds at the ready! They're faster than they look...

[OOC: Test Prowess vs Difficulty 8 twice. Their halberds do 5 Stamina on a hit.]

Not wanting to be skewered Todd parries the first thrust, pushing across the second halberd.

This buys him time to launch a spinning kick at the first demon's head, but his position isn't great. But with a bit more effort...

Defense: Prowess 6 + Martial Arts 2 + Roll 1 = 9. Success! Prowess 6 + Martial Arts 2 + Roll 4 = 12. More success!

Attack: Prowess 6 + Martial Arts 2 + Roll -2 = 6. Not so good. If that's a miss (which I expect it is) I'd like to spend 1 determination to invoke peak physical perfection for a +2.

Still holding onto the mid-point of the first Mwng's halberd, and realizing that your spin-kick is going to come up short, you twist hard in mid-air using your grip for leverage. The Mwng grunts in anger and swings his blade trying to shake you off! That gets you the extra distance you need, and your heel slams into the second demon's temple!

Further down the path, you catch a glimpse of the third creature tossing Nereid's limp body into one of the fountains!

Ian:
It doesn't take you long to find the peculiar out-flowing current that you followed into the cavern. The channel is narrow; either you or Nereid will have to go first--and the magical barrier at the end is disorienting...

Meanwhile; the other Mwng, bleeding from it's ears is struggling to it's feet. You can tell that it's probably seeing three of you--but that doesn't seem to slow it down any!

"YEOOOWWWWW!"

The demon jerks the halberd so quickly Todd doesn't have time to realise what's happening until he's sailing through the air.

I see the demon's action as something of a stunt, so I don't think this qualifies as either a martial arts or wrestling move: Prowess 6 + Roll 1 = 7.

Perfect.

"Woah, Sensei, wish you were here to see that."

Todd then takes the halberd and spins it around his body, switching grip from hand to hand as he advances on the demon.

Then he sweeps it underneath the demon, planning to trip him, and use the halberd to pin him to the floor.

Nereid:
The pagoda is lit from within by flickering green light, and as you approach you realize that it isn't a free-standing building at all. Its carved from the stone wall of the cavern, like an elaborate false front to cave chambers within.

Creeping up to it, along the side of one of the decorative fountains, you can see that wide steps with shallow treads lead up to the entrance. The carved doorway is guarded by a pair of foo dogs the size of Shetland ponies. They're both listlessly sniffing the air.

[OOC: Test Coordination vs a Difficulty of 5 to sneak past.]

Ian:
As Nereid rolls away from bloody-ears, the Mwng lunges toward her. Its path will take it within easy reach of your new host's claws as it tries to reach the archaeologist...

Todd:
Smug about how easily it seized the weapon back, your opponent grins, baring three-inch fangs dripping with thick saliva, and spins the halberd in a quick flourish ending with it couched beneath one hairy armpit. "现在,你是我的!" it snarls. It's free hand comes up and makes the universal "bring it" gesture, inviting you to charge and impale yourself.

Ian:
[OOC: I'll give you the Mwng's ungainly Prowess of 5, since you're using it's body. Total: 2.]

In tripping over your own weirdly un-fin-like feet, you tangle them with those of the Mwng with blood matting it's ear-hair. Bloody-ears gets to the ground first, breaking your fall. You clamber to your feet, but bloody-ears does not. It appears to be very unconscious.

Nereid:
The foo dogs lose interest in you as soon as you are through the doorway. Their orders must be very specific...

Inside the pagoda entrance you find a broad tiled floor, with a balustrade surrounding a central, square opening. Broad stone stairs with shallow treads descend on either side, lit by ornate bronze dragon-sculptures breathing jets of green fire.

More green light comes from below, shining up through the wide square opening. Below is a vermillion-and-gold throne room, it's floor carved from pure jade. Rows of ancient armor, carefully gilded, line a wide aisle leading to a raised dais concealed behind a folding filigree screen also carved from pure jade. Somewhere below, drums and chimes provide musical accompaniment to your stealthy approach.

Todd:
A short way ahead, on the steps leading up to the pagoda-like structure carved into the cavern's back wall, a pair of foo dogs become distracted from whatever they're currently trying to pounce on, and prick their ears in your direction, baring ivory-white teeth.

Ian:
Your current host body's sense of smell is quite extraordinary--and blissfully the Mwng is nose-blind to its own horrid stench. You can smell the animal scent of the foo dogs, Todd's sweat, and a wisp of Nereid's perfume. That wisp leads toward the pagoda-structure... You are positive that you could track her by scent in this body!

"Nice Doggies.", in the Mwng's vernacular comes out more like "骯髒的獵犬", but the point is made. The two Foo Dogs leap back onto their plinths flanking the pagoda's entrance and allow you to pass.

Nereid:
A Mwng enters the pagoda behind you with Todd, seemingly unconscious, held negligently over one shoulder.

Re: E5S11 - Tung Lung Chau - Ian, Nereid, Todd
Ian:
[OOC: 15! Cue Sherlock Holmes moment!]
The music and the ceremonial guards indicated that something of great portent or significance is about to take place.
Marks on the dais indicate that the three-paneled folding screen in front of the throne is a recent alteration in the decor. The symbols on the panels are in archaic Chinese--but that isn't so difficult for an intellect of your caliber:

                                          "Feather Empress"
"Banished"                "Great Golden Peacock Queen"             "Warded"
"Eternally Barred"           "Devourer of Souls"                        "Accursed"
"Denied Heaven"           "Sustained by Magic"                "Ten Thousand Years"

Magic is outside your experience; however, the symbols on the flanking panels are of the sort generally believed by the local culture to be magically efficacious. Your understanding of human beliefs concerning magic is that symbolism is extremely important for the focusing of these peculiar energies. The flanking glyphs indicate that the Feather Empress is under a curse, banished to Earth and barred from her original "heavenly" dimension.

The stone artifact inexplicably carved into a crude representation of an Aquan head that Zhang Jue stole from Taggart the ethically-challenged archaeologist exhibited strange psychic or magical properties when Nereid had it in her laboratory. Properties that she described as being "a spirit of vengeance". Improbable as the artifact is, since it post-dates your race by millennia, it's energies were responsible for several attacks, suicides, and at least one murder before Zhang Jue acquired it to give it as tribute to the Feather Empress.

The glyphs for "Devourer of Souls" and "Sustained by Magic" take on considerable significance in this context. If the Feather Empress consumes the artifact's energy, she might be able to overcome the barriers symbolically represented on the panels.

Nereid:
Below, in the throne room, horns override the other music and then everything falls silent. One of the armored forms shouts "The Feather Empress, Glorious Queen of Demons!" and from behind the screen appears a regal figure; she is tall and slender, dressed in a form-hugging garment made of peacock feathers. The feathers spread behind her as she walks, her gown has a vast and seemingly weightless train. Her crown is an array of upswept golden spikes into which her dark hair is braided. Eyes that are bright red from their irises outward scan the throne room. "Supplicants may approach and kneel before me."

From the far end of the room, beneath the balcony where you're crouched, Zhang Jue enters. She's carrying a lacquered box big enough to contain a human head--or a stone artifact carved to resemble an Aquan head...

Everyone:
Zhang Jue walks slowly forward, between the rows of golden-armored demons. When she is still ten feet from the edge of the dais, she stops and kneels. Setting the box down at arms length in front of her, she bows and presses her forehead to the swirl-patterned jade floor. "慈禧威猛,你的僕人為您提供這來之不易的禮物."

The Feather Empress makes a tiny gesture with one hand, and the two nearest demons set aside their polearms and step forward to pick up the box.

Ian:
As you lope down the side stairs and enter the throne room, the Gold Guard obey your warning and form up two deep in front of the Feather Empress. She, on the other hand, seems unimpressed. "You were supposed to prevent anyone from entering the cavern! Failure is not tolerated!"*

As you get close to the box, you've got to avoid the two Guardsdemons who are trying to pick it up.

[OOC: Test Coordination vs a Difficulty of 4 to avoid them. Or test Prowess vs a Difficulty of 4 to bowl them over. Your choice.]

*Translated from Archaic Chinese, since you're smart enough to have picked it up by now.

Todd:
You cannonball off the balcony, into the packed ranks of the Golden Guard! They go down like... well, like tenpins. At least four of them aren't going to be getting up any time soon. Two of the demons from each end of the two rows--the ones still standing, in other words--charge at you with their halberds!

[OOC: Defend against 4 attacks, each Difficulty 5. The halberds do 4 Stamina on a hit.]

Ian:
Your demon form is getting lighter on it's feet--or possibly you're getting better at operating it's peculiar nervous system. You slide past the guards and grab the box! It's not very heavy, but you can tell from the center-of-gravity that there is something dense nestled in the center of the interior volume.

Nereid:
From your vantage point, no one can see that you're there. But that may be temporary, as both Zhang Jue's eyes and those of the Feather Empress are drawn to the top of Todd's trajectory... The Feather Empress's eyes narrow in anger, and she raises her hands, displaying her long, curling fingernails. She begins an atonal chant in Chinese...

Zhang Jue, however, immediately spins around to snarl at Todd. "You again! Why are you so accursedly persistent?!?" The question is obviously rhetorical, since she doesn't give him time to answer, just reaches into the full bell-sleeves of her dress and pulls out a pair of... grenades?!?

She throws them on the ground (on either side of Ian's hulking demon-form) and smoke billows forth; grey clouds from one side, red clouds from the other! "Six Storms! Kill this troublesome gaijin!"

Sprawled on the floor, Todd glances left, then right, at the charging demons.

"Uh, OK," he says to no one in particular. "Maybe I didn't completely think this through."

He rolls onto his back and spins like a break-dancer, legs and arms whipping out of reach of the halberbs. Or, more precisely, out of reach of four of the halberds.

"YOWWWWW!"

Coordination 6 + Athletics 1 + base of 7; rolls 1,  2, -4, 1 = 8, 9, 2 (ouch) and 8. That's one 4 stamina hit.

Todd spins to his feet, one eye on the demon who successfully jabbed him, and delivers a quick left hook to its jaw.

Prowess 6 + Martial Arts 2 + roll -2 = 6.

It looks like the Golden Guard's ceremonial armor is actual gold--the demon's fanciful helmet crumples like tissue, and the demon flies backward into the folding screen behind the Feather Empress, causing it to teeter!

Everyone:
The billowing clouds of black and red smoke resolve into a pair of humanoid forms; Todd recognizes them both from earlier encounters with the Six Storms. On the left, emerging from black smoke, is the emaciated form of Whispering Dream. On the right, emerging from red smoke, is a stocky Asian man with a shark-like grin--literally shark-like; it wraps halfway around his head and is full of jagged, razor-sharp teeth! (His name is Blood Shark, but Todd never got an introduction back on the hotel rooftop.)

Blood Shark lunges at you from one side, jaws gaping, and Whispering Dream floats upward, flickering in and out of existence like a ghost. He hisses a curse as he recognizes you! "'Bellowing Nightmare'; back, I see, for another lesson in pain!" He floats downward, striking with blinding speed, one finger extended to impale you with one corkscrew fingernail!

[OOC: Test Prowess vs a Difficulty of 6, and suffer 4 Stamina if Blood Shark bites you. Then, Test Prowess vs a Difficulty of 6 to avoid Whispering Dream! You know from painful experience that he drains 5 Stamina with a mere touch!]

[OOC: Defend against 4 attacks, each Difficulty 5. The halberds do 4 Stamina on a hit.]

Ian:
The Feather Queen's voice cuts through the confusion like a blade. "Stop! The box needs no protection beyond that which I provide--and I hunger!"

Zhang Jue, directly in your path, looks into your eyes--and finally figures out the thing about the behavior of her minions that's been bothering her all day. "My Empress, he is possessed! There is another intruder among us!"

"Truly? How remarkable!" The Empress addresses the Mwng you're controlling directly. "Free your mind! You serve me, and me alone!" The last phrase echoes strangely in the hall, as if it is backed with some mystical force. As the words enter the Mwng's hairy ears, it suddenly feels to you as if the T.U.N.A.'s power source is drained, or suppressed somehow--your control is slipping...

Zhang Jue, on the other hand, is not at all reluctant! "Worthless minions! This is how you fight!" She snarls, and brings her hands together in front of her, at waist height. "大過! It's crowded there in the tiny brainpan of the Mwng, there are only so many neurons; you're talking in ancient Chinese, calculating the trajectory of the box, keeeping your host's feet (both of which appear to be left feet) under it as it dodges around the Feather Empress... it's all very taxing for the T.U.N.A.

Nereid's collapse cuts Todd's giggling fit is short.

"Hang loose, Ghost Guy. This is gonna hurt."

Eyes narrowed he leaps towards the Feather Empress, swinging Whispering Dream like a club at her head.

Given the zero balance in my Determination pool I expect I can only do damage to one of them. Whispering Dream seems the logical choice for dramatic impact.

Prowess 6 + Acrobatics 1 + Roll -1 = 6. So-so.

Whispering Dream isn't in much of a position to defend himself at this point. Turquoise light flares around the Empress as you strike her with him--and he goes limp in your hand!

The Empress, barely hampered by the enormous feather train of her formal court dress, spins to face you, long-nailed hands raised and shimmering with green fire--distinctly different than the turquoise glow she used on Nereid!

As Nereid begins to slip out of consciousness the Amulet glows and she hears the song of the sirens. But this song doesn't cloud her mind but gives her clarity and strength

Radiating waves of green fire brush over your body, and you feel... normal. Normally Todd could have easily evaded the attacks. Even with his enhanced abilities lessened by the Feather Empress' magic Todd almost managed to avoid the halberds.

Almost isn't good enough. One attacker just slips past his block, a second catches him in the leg before he can recover and dodge.

Todd hits the ground, unconscious.

Prowess 6-2 = 4 + Martial Arts 2 + Rolls -1,-1-0,+2 = 5,5,6,7. That's two hits for 4 pts = 8, and I only have 7 stamina left.

Detective Jones and the MIB divers follow you through the portal, and after a brief moment of disorientation, into the fountain-pool within the Feather Empress' underground stronghold. Flickering green light comes from the pagoda carved into the cavern's back wall, it's entrance flanked by restive Foo Dogs. Nothing else appears to be active in the cavern--all is disturbingly quiet.

One of the MIB divers taps his earpiece, and frowns. "Radio interference. I cannot raise Agent Kwai Pun." He looks to Detective Jones for instructions.

Nate Jones brushes water from his wiry crewcut, and whispers to you. "Let me guess; Todd and Nereid are in there?" He flicks water in the direction of the pagoda.

Nereid & Todd:
[OOC: An indeterminate time has passed (for you). It's been at least an hour, so your current Stamina is equal to your Strength. Todd, you've also recovered from the draining effect of the Empress' touch.]

As the old saying goes, "the Chinese have a lot of Hells..." As you regain consciousness, you appear to be in the Hell of Hanging Upside Down Over A Yawning Abyss. The chains around your ankles keep you from falling, but the flickering green torchlight coming from above illuminates a circular shaft that goes down... down... down... into utter darkness. The torches are just inside a cavern-like entrance at the top of this bottomless shaft. Other chains, dripping with damp and rust, dangle around you just out of reach.

A faint moaning from somewhere behind you lets you know that you are not alone in this particular Hell. "If I could reach either of you, I would kill you right now." The voice is Zhang Jue's! "You are the cause of my failure--and the price of failing the Feather Empress is great indeed..."

The blood is pounding in your ears from being upside down for so long. The rusty chains are looped several times around your ankles, biting into your skin. From there, they run to huge iron rings set in the stone ceiling, then back to the cavern entrance at the top of the shaft. Ian:
The good news is that Foo Dogs are even less resistant to possession than Mwngs. The bad news is that they're not even as bright--it's beyond crowded, cramming your vast intellect into this tiny silicate-based brain. You may begin to have problems with not acting like a stone dog...

But the Foo Dog's sensorium is fantastic! It's vision may be black-and-white, but the acuity is extreme, and it's sense of smell is thousands of times better than your own. So much so that it's kind of distracting; you can smell Todd and Nereid, you can even smell their peaks of emotional excitement. You can smell the path they took into the carved-stone building...

You can also smell Detective Jones and his strike team, moving stealthily up the edges of the path to your host's location at the pagoda doors. They smell excited too...

Todd:
μ-90's voice in your meditation sounds just like your own--except that you don't think you've ever reached this level of snark. "Well, cave-boy, this is another fine mess you've gotten yourself into. Do you have a plan, or are you depending on your usual make-it-up-as-you-go methodology? If you are, my quantum-analysis of your chances shows once again the statistical near-certainty that you already have offspring."

Nereid:
It looks to you like Todd fainted. Even Todd couldn't possibly have gone to sleep hanging upside-down over an abyss... Could he?

"We no longer believe in primitive superstitions like 'witchcraft' and 'demons'." He pauses in his smugness, and begins rotating in the opposite direction. "And I'm not sure what 'Chinese' even means. Is that a haplogroup? Doesn't matter; my clever solution to your situation would have, first, been not to get into it." His sigh is more implied that audible. "Your clever solution should take into account that most of the classic deathtrap scenarios in your fiction include a time element. The 'evil' 'Chinese' 'witch' is probably not going to wait around for you to die of old age. I recommend haste."

The benefits of all that gymnastics and martial arts! You smoothly swing far enough to grab one of the other dangling chains, and begin to pull your way up. The dangling skeletal leg bone at the bottom of the chain slips through its shackle as you grasp the chain and knock it loose. You see the bones fall into the green mist below, where they begin to smoke and dissolve, trailing yellow-green vapor as they disappear into the darkness.

Todd, Nereid:
Nereid manages to swing far enough to grab Todd's outstretched hand--just as the rust and collected detritus holding Todd's chain steady in the ceiling-ring gives way under the strain!

Zhang Jue gasps in surprise as Toddd plummets! Six yards of chain rattle through the loop before jamming against a twisted link! Fortunately, Nereid's grip is strong. When the chain stops, Nereid is hanging by her ankle chains, with the first chain she grabbed in one hand, and Todd's hand in the other. Todd is now head-up, with a loop of loose chain dangling from his legs down into the corrosive mist, and back up to where it's jammed in the ceiling-ring.

Ian:
Your Foo Dog senses make it easy for you to avoid any Mwngs wandering the Feather Empress' halls--their stench is nose-blindingly strong. The Golden Guard are almost as easy to smell, but far more numerous. Their scent-trails criss-cross over the trails of Nereid's perfume and Todd's sweat--and a third scent; a blend of jasmine, exotic musk... and fear.

Todd looks up at Nereid, and says, "That was sorta the plan. Only in reverse."

He looks down into the mist, and sees the furthest dangling bits of chain dissolving as they touch the mist.

"New plan. Really need a new plan."

Ian:
Your trail leads down into the now empty throne room, abandoned in some haste it would appear after a fit of pique by the Feather Empress--there are singed spots on the floor and walls, smelling of scorched demon-flesh. Guttering green torches light your way down another broad curving stairway, and past cobweb-filled alcoves. The scent trails lead through several doorways and halls, into a region of the palace where the Golden Guard are housed. Droning demonic snores come from several side-chambers, and the truly horrific smell of a demonic lavatory wafts up one narrow hallway.

You're passing that intersection when it happens--six half-armored demons, obviously just coming off duty, round the corner headed for the latrine and spot Detective Jones' strike team!

Todd:
The good news is, your ankle-chains are no longer connected to anything. The bad news is, if Nereid drops you now, you're screwed.

Inspiration strikes.

"Got a new plan. When I tell you to let go, let go."

Todd begins to swing again. Less vigorously, at least as first, but gradually increasing the tempo as they gain speed.

Specks of rust dislodged by Todd's swinging fall away from the creaking chains. This does not bolster Todd's confidence, but he's committed now.

Back... forth... back... forth... back... Each round increases the distance the swing covers. And increases the noise and rust coming from the chains.

I'm running out of time. I need to chance it...

"NOW!" he cries; Nereid releases her grip and Todd sails towards the edge of the pit.

But is it far enough?

Re: E5S11 - Tung Lung Chau - Ian, Nereid, Todd
[OOC: The pyramid is now at a cumulative 1 Minor, 1 Moderate, and 1 Major Success. Getting sooo close!]

Todd:
You sail across the shaft and upward, straight out from the peak of Nereid's arc. The wall is coming up very fast...

Slam! You hit the wall and grab, getting a fingertip grip on the damp stone at the edge of the access shaft, with your ankle-chain dangling down into darkness! One chin-up and you're home free...

Nereid:
Without Todd as a counter-weight, your swing becomes erratic. Jackknifing at the waist you grab the chain above your ankles and start to climb. The rough links are covered with flaking rust, but at least they're easy to grip. The only problem is that every foot you climb becomes another foot of heavy chain weighing down your ankles...

[OOC: This is a Trouble, as mentioned earlier. Lifting the weight of all that chain as you go up makes the Difficulty 2 harder...]

Speaking of down; Zhang Jue is now dangling below you, chained at wrists and ankles and struggling futilely as the corrosive mist rises!

Ian:
[OOC: You'd add the Foo Dog's Prowess--which isn't bad; a 5.]

In bowling, if you understand Detective Jones' description of the sport, you just scored a split. You knock two unsuspecting demons flying, leaving the ones at either end of the line still standing--and confused by the actions of what they thought was a "friendly" Foo Dog! The MIB strike team, realizing that gunfire would only draw more unwanted attention, charge the demons using only their batons!

Nereid:
[OOC: Pulling yourself up, and all that hanging chain, and Zhang Jue... That's a Strength test. Unfortunately, your Strength is 3, +1 for your Athletics Specialty. The baseline difficulty for this pyramid test is 6, +2 for you right now because of the heavy chains. That leaves you with a Major Failure. The (only) good news is, that doesn't subtract from your pyramid successes, it just causes more Trouble.]

Coiling the dangling chains around your legs helps distribute the weight, allowing you to swing more easily. One... two... Your outstretched fingertips just brush one of Zhang Jue's chains... Three... got it! But the slack in the chain beneath you swings into Zhang Jue's side, causing her to flinch away--and her sudden shift in position causes your whole delicate web of chains and weights and balances to unravel!

Zhang Jue becomes entangled in your ankle chain, pulling you down--the separate chains holding her wrists and ankles spread wide as you fall between them, pulling her into a horizontal position. You land on her back, hard--nearly dislocating both of her shoulders in the process. "Aieee! 下车的我,你发牛!"

There's a sizzling sound just below you as the links of chain hanging from your legs begin to dissolve...

Re: E5S11 - Tung Lung Chau - Ian, Nereid, Todd
Todd pulls himself up. But that's the easy part of the plan.

The next bit is the tricky part. Leaping back over the pit, grabbing Nereid's chain, and hoping his leap has another force to break the chains.

Nereid's act of altruism isn't going to make the job any easier. Not that dropping Zhang Jue into the pit would cause him enormous grief. Nonetheless, being a superhero he at least has to try.

I gave myself a free escape on the grounds I'm putting myself into greater danger. Hope that's ok.

Rolling... Coordination 6 + Acrobatics 1 + Roll -1 = 7 (unless I can use my Leaping Mastery 8).

Todd:
[OOC: Leaping Mastery applies.]
Chain links stretch with the sound of rending metal, then snap! You have a talent for wrapping things in other things--you whip loops of shattered chain around your arm, supporting Nereid and Zhang Jue with straining muscles.

Ian:
You trip a couple of demons, roll over one that's down, and scatter the rest. Detective Jones directs a couple of agents, via sign language, to act as a rearguard. Suddenly, your extraordinary hearing picks up the sound of metal groaning under strain and then failing. It's coming from just down the hallway... Loping in that direction, you see that the hallway ends abruptly in a gaping vertical shaft. That looks like Todd, dangling from the ceiling holding a bundle of rusty chains!

Todd angles his body to absorb the fall, pulling Nereid and Zhang Ju behind him.

His shoulder hits the stone, two feet beyond the edge of the pit. He rolls, bringing the two women behind him, and hits the wall. Nereid and Zhang Ju tumble into him, completing the pain trifecta.

He hurts, but not enough to stop him from grabbing Zhang Ju's chain and tryiing to wrap her up. But the angles not right, and she's surprisingly slippery.

Binding 6 + Roll -3 = 3. That ain't gonna do it.

C'mon, Nereid, take her down!

Giving serious side-eye to the Foo Dog, Zhang Jue waves everyone up the passage Detective Jones' strike team came down. At the intersection full of dead and unconscious Golden Guard, you can hear droning demonic snores come from several side-chambers down the corridor from whence the attack originally came. Zhang Jue leads you in the other direction--toward the truly horrific smell of a demonic lavatory, wafting up the narrow hallway.

"There are vents that reach the surface of Tung Lung Chau. We can climb the shafts, if the 妖蜘蛛 are merciful."

True to her word, the narrow hallway leads to a series of filthy alcoves with holes in the floor--the source of the stench--and iron gratings mounted into the ceilings. Zhang Jue picks an alcove seemingly at random, and gestures to Todd. "The grates are bolted in place; can you pull one loose?"

Nereid & Todd:
You climb past the dried husks of spiders with bodies the size of your heads, and the coiled forms of molted centipede shells. The shaft tightens, making your climb easier--and then harder as the space within becomes very snug. There's a sudden feeling of disorientation, as if up and down no longer mean what they used to. You keep climbing...

At last you reach open air, and clamber out of a crevice between to boulder-like rock outcropings. Zhang Jue follows Todd, and Detective Jones and his strike team bring up the rear--two of the agents helping pull the broadly-built Detective through the narrow gap.

You're near the center of Tung Lung Chau island, in almost pitch darkness. To the south you can see the MiB vessel, dangerously close to the rocks just off-shore. To the west, you can see the gaudy Hong Kong skyline.

"Time to part ways." Zhang Jue says. "Endeavor to stay out of my business, and I will endeavor to stay out of yours." She steps back, beginning to turn toward the city lights.

Zhang Jue disappears into the darkness--or maybe she just disappears. It doesn't take you long to rejoin Ian and Agent Kwai-Pun at the MIB patrol vessel. Agent Kwai-Pun welcomes you aboard. "It is not everyday that someone safely returns from the Netherworld. You are to be congratulated! But I suggest that this" she nudges the stone artifact with one toe--gingerly "be taken far from Hong Kong. As quickly as possible..."

Detective Jones picks up the artifact with a towel, seeming slightly unwilling to touch it with his bare hands. He looks it over closely, looks at Ian floating just off the port bow, and looks back at the stone. "I do see the resemblance." he allows "But that's a mystery for another day..."
