Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) was formed over fifty cycles ago by the Joint Terranovan Space Initiative as a multinational independent military force intended to combat the Earth's Colonial Expeditionary Force on Terra Nova proper and its surrounding space. Drawing on veterans of the War of the Alliance, JSOC quickly grew to a 10,000 strong force, operating fifteen capital-class space warships and a regiment of ground troops. Thanks to ample support from both the CNCS and AST, JSOC soon established a significant arsenal of the most advanced technologies the 1920s and 1930s had to offer. To manage the growing logistical and operational complexity of the command, the organisation was split up into seven independent divisions:

Division One - Command

The overall command and control of JSOC was the responsibility of Division One. To ensure that all decisions relating to the defence of Terra Nova were fair and unbiased, Division One was traditionally chiefed by a triumvirate of three generals, with two officers from the CNCS and AST, and one Badlands representative, generally a command officer from Peace River. Division One was also responsible for diplomacy, public relations and administration for JSOC.

Current status: Division One is presently lead by Brigadier Jon Wasch, formerly of the United Mercantile Federation Army. Twenty seven individuals are employed there, with the bulk of resources devoted to the maintaining of relations with JSOC supporters throughout Terra Nova and the protection of the organisation's secrecy.

Division Two - Intelligence / Counter-Intelligence

JSOC has relied since its inception on being able to anticipate and react to possible threats before they materialize. Like all special forces groups it focuses on lightning strikes and small unit tactics to achieve rapid dominance, which requires quality, current intelligence to achieve. Division Two was responsible for delivering this intelligence, and ensuring that JSOC's enemies weren't able to do the same. Combining highly trained operatives with the most advanced espionage technology available, Division Two developed into a formidable information gathering agency.

Current Status: Like all of the remaining divisions, Division Two has suffered greatly from the reduction in manpower and funding. However, it continues to support itself through the trade of information with domestic Terranovan intelligence agencies, and operating on a quid pro quo basis has maintained its ability to obtain effective intelligence throughout the decades.

Division Three - Aerospace Science & Technology

The research and development of new military technologies specifically aimed at combating the CEF was the responsibility of Division Three. Gathering the best and brightest of Terra Nova together, it was Division Three who were responsible for many advances in modern stealth technology, antimatter power systems and space warfare systems. In its heyday Division Three controlled over half of Terra Nova's shipyards' production capacity and three orbital laboratories.

Current Status: With the disbanding of the JTSI, Division Three lost access to all the shipyard facilities, and the severe reduction in available funding has reduced the group to a single orbital laboratory, running dark to maintain the illusion it was hulked by a rogue missile attack some forty cycles ago. Nevertheless, AS&T continues to make significant technological advancements and is the division mainly responsible for JSOC's continued financial viability.

Division Four - Fleet Operations Group

The core of Joint Strategic Operations Command, the Fleet Operations Group was the division responsible for operating and maintaining JSOC's 1st Fleet. Comprised of two cruisers, a light carrier and a dozen or so destroyers and frigates, the 1st Fleet was the pride of Terra Nova's space defence forces. Division Four was comprised of all the crews, support staff and refit and resupply facilities which supported the fleet.

Current Status: Division Four no longer exists. Without sufficient support from Terra Nova, it became impossible to maintain such a large independent fleet. Over time the vessels making up 1st Fleet were re-appropriated by the CNCS and AST for use in their own space forces.

Division Five - Finance and Acquisitions

Division Five was responsible for the business operations of JSOC. From budgeting to procurement to contracting, the FA managed the resupplying, reinforcement and purchasing for all other divisions. It also handled all legal issues for JSOC, and was instrumental in the writing of the Near Terra Nova Defence Accord, the document which granted JSOC broad-reaching power to act as an independent military force.

Current Status: With the collapse of the JTSI, Division Five was disbanded after it became clear that the organization no longer had the political clout or resources to be able to carry out its core business functions. The other divisions are now expected to handled their own budgeting and recruitment, although resources are shared throughout JSOC.

Division Six - Special Operations Group

Whilst the primary focus of the Joint Terranovan Space Initiative was space defense, Joint Strategic Operations Command was expected to be able to combat invading forces effectively in any environment. To that end, Special Operations Group was created. A special forces regiment made up of many specialized sub-commands, Division Six was comprised of 2,000 infantry, 400 Gears, 100 tanks and supporting aircraft and spacecraft. Division Six was initially primarily intended as a space based marine force, with missions generally involving boarding actions against enemy ships, defense of allied space stations and outposts and invasion of enemy planetary staging areas. It quickly became obvious, however, that Special Operations Group was effective not just in zero- and low-gravity environments, but in Terra Nova's harsh high-gravity terrain as well. As a result, towards the end of JTSI's existence Division Six was increasingly deployed against domestic terrorist targets and occasionally separatist elements within the CNCS and AST.

Current Status: Division Six has been reduced from a regiment-sized force down to what might generously be referred to as a battalion. In practice, it is now a collection of highly specialized and independent squads which operate often without support for extended periods of time. With the collapse of Division Four, Special Operations Group has become the main fighting force for JSOC, which relies on its special forces more and more to carry out offensive actions against Terra Nova's enemies.

Division Seven - Advanced Tactics And Units

ATU was once the black operations division of JSOC, already a secretive organization itself. Responsible for the most dangerous and politically ambiguous missions that JSOC was required to carry out, Division Seven is even now classified at the highest level and little is known of this shadowy arm of Joint Strategic Operations Command.

Current Status: Within the remnants of the JTSI, Division Seven has officially been disbanded. Rumours to the contrary, however, persist...

*The highest ranking JSOC officer is currently Brigadier Jon Wasch.

*Captain Edward Throssell is in fact the rank of Colonel. He is referred to as Captain thanks to his command of the Damocles.

*Bombardiers are responsible for manning the heavy weapons of JSOC, from artillery emplacements to gunnery crew for the Damocles to Weapons Officers for Striders.

*Trooper is a rank reserved for members of Division 7, infantry who operate as the very elite of JSOC and are therefore rewarded with higher pay. They are still hierarchically the same rank as Private, however.

*Specialists are hierarchically the same rank as Privates, but possess specialised skills which afford them a higher pay-grade. Generally, Specialists operate highly technically communications or other electronic equipment. They also form the bulk of Division 2's intelligence agent pool.
