Re: Chapter Two: Back to Brooken
Vethryn takes a moment to breathe, letting the wash and excitement of victory flow over her. Then, using her spear as a walking staff to gain momentum, she begins running after the others.

Bonus recovery spent takes Vethryn back to full.

Zanne is clearly in agreement with the rest, giving a quick "Right, legging it!" as she runs.

12:16, Today: Zanne rolled 14 using 3d6+2.  Recovery.

Re: Chapter Two: Back to Brooken
"When the orc with the giant axe thinks about backing down from a fight..." Gilad takes one look at Shakru, another back at the growing hellhole, and hightails it beside his friends.

Spending two recoveries (Gilad had one left, plus the bonus one he just received, so he's all out until our next long rest) and taking the average healing of 15hp from each, to raise Gilad's health to 32/45hp.

"Wait!" Durum calls out. "The Hellhole is defeated, but now Brooken is in peril."

He looks at Sigmund, "Scion of the Emperor, you know the way we must go."

OOC I added the two recoveries to my total. I'll leave his hit points as is for now.

"Do you propose there's something we do about that?" Vethryn pauses, pointing her spear at the roiling and flashing thunderhead. "Sword and spear won't harm a cloud and steel armor might as well be silk before the heat of lightning. Ushug knows if you offer me a good fight, I'll follow. Running into the death-storm is nothing but suicide."

Sigmund looks at Vethryn. "We do the thing I was ordered here to do. We destroy the gate! Come on."

He leads the group toward the gate...

"Much as I can appreciate a flair for the dramatic, Your Royalness, I don't think there's much we could do inside that storm right now except get swept away." Gilad remarks, holding his plumed hat down on his head with one hand, to keep it from blowing off.

"Let's at least get back to the tower and regroup, see if that thing is going to just keep growoing, or settle down."

Re: Chapter Two: Back to Brooken
The barbarian kept running but was also at a loss as to the reaction of some of the other more civilised members of the party. To his simple way of thinking, if the danger can't be killed with an axe then the danger is too great for you to face and retreating is then the best option.

Perhaps I do not want to be civilised thought the Half Orc with a grunt.

Zanne skids to a halt. "Wai-bu- fine!" she sputters before changing her route to follow after him. As she does, she adds "Can't you at least lie and promise a royal reward? Charging into stupid danger is so much easier if I can pretend there's a bathtub full of jewels at the end of it!"

"I will get you a bath of whatever you like if you just keep running!" Vander says, sliding to change his direction so he loses none of his speed. However, he makes sure to keep close to Zanne.

Sigmund pulls out a small object from his belt-pouch. "I was specifically given this item to preserve the integrity of this building.

He recounts the tale:

Backstory:
Very well" says the major grimly, then turns to Sigmund. "One of our outposts, Kira's Watch, is under attack by an unknown force. We send reinforcements through the gate several hours ago, but none have returned. We cannot let the gate fall into enemy hands, so I need you to travel through, asses the situation and, if necessary, destroy the gate. Septus here will give you the means. One more thing soldier" adds the major "Something is happening to Brooken, some sort of malign change. Desertion and insubordination are rife, and the very buildings seem to be taking a new shape. If you can, bring help"

The mage hands you a small iron sigil, his will still focused on the shimmering gate. "Place this in the centre of the gate and speak my name and the gate will close forever. You will have a few seconds to run. make use of them"

Zanne:

Sigmund chortles. "I am a terrible liar. But I can tell you that if we let this place fall into enemy hands, the consequences for the world will be far worse. I am not proposing we run headlong into the storm, but we do need to find a way to get to the gate."

Vander:

Sigmund sticks out his leg to trip Vander. "Come on, people, think? How do we get to the gate without running into the storm."

"...huh. That does change things." the bard remarks. He takes another weary look at the hellhole; Gilad's body aches after the might battle he just endured, but if there's more that needs be done to stop this threat... "Once more into the breach, eh?" Gilad grins, and follows Sigmund back towards the hellhole...

"Uh, you DO remember that mage's name, right...?"

The tower is just under a mile from your position. In between you and it is the imploding hellhole and steam demon. Will post the mechanics for getting past it tomorrow.

Re: Chapter Two: Back to Brooken
Vethryn shakes her head. "Sure. We'll just unravel the mysteries of this artifact while on the run and under attack. Not a problem." She slows her sprint to a trot, conserving some energy for the inevitable fight against the steam monsters that seem to also be converging on the gate. She would have done better to keep running, though, as a blast of lightning ripped out of the clouds and struck at her position.

16:21, Today: Vethryn rolled 16 using 1d20+6.  Strength Check.

Zanne shakes her head at the stupidity of this plan as she runs- but that doesn't stop her from running. She proves more adept at dodging lightning bolts than giant rocks.

Solid success.
21:01, Today: Sigmund rolled 28 using 1d20+11.  STR + Orc War Veteran.
