Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
The soldiers start and wheel round to face you, relaxing when they take in your uniform. "Deliver it, sergeant" orders the major in a clipped, no-nonsense tone.

Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
Sigmund  nods. "Sirs, I was attacked by a group of orcs that revealed a plot against the Imperial Family." He relays the details he learned from the orcs about the Orc Lord's plot, though he leaves out the part about him being the target of the attack.

Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
The major listens to your report without comment, his expression grave.

"We must farspeak the high command at once"  he concludes, looking to his wizard subordinate.

"If I close the gate I may not be able to open it again" warns the wizard, his face glistening with sweat.

"Very well" says the major grimly, then turns to Sigmund. "One of our outposts, Kira's Watch, is under attack by an unknown force. We send reinforcements through the gate several hours ago, but none have returned. We cannot let the gate fall into enemy hands, so I need you to travel through, asses the situation and, if necessary, destroy the gate. Septus here will give you the means. One more thing soldier" adds the major "Something is happening to Brooken, some sort of malign change. Desertion and insubordination are rife, and the very buildings seem to be taking a new shape. If you can, bring help"

The mage hands you a small iron sigil, his will still focused on the shimmering gate. "Place this in the centre of the gate and speak my name and the gate will close forever. You will have a few seconds to run. make use of them"

"Any questions sergeant?" asks the major.

Sigmund salutes. "No questions, sir. I will not fail you!"

Once the major dismisses him, he moves out quickly, plunging into the portal...

Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
After an indescribable lacuna as you pass through the gate, you step out of a similar magic circle in a small, low-ceilinged cellar dimly lit by sconces containing weakly flickering everlasting lights, their magic almost evaporated away.

There is one exit from the room leading to a stairway to the left. There are three bodies here, imperial soldiers, recently dead. They all have horrific bite wounds and the floor is slick with blood.

Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
You come to another level, a maze of cells, alcoves and storeroom, passing several more mutilated soldiers before coming to a narrow corridor ending in the stairs to the next level. Somehow you sense they will take you above ground. But before you approach something comes clattering down the stairs and in a moment you see what was making the noise: a huge steel lion, forged of clockwork steam, and demonic power! Its needle sharp teeth and maw are slathered in blood, but the soldiers obviously inflicted a heavy toll on the beast. It leaks steam from a dozen broken joints, and one foreleg cannot bear its weight. None the less, it still looks extremely dangerous!

Roll for Init, if you get 17 or better post for round 1.

Because the narrow arena makes defending difficult, you will both get a +2 bonus on attack this round.

Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
Sigmund does not hesitate, his eyes like orbs of steel. He springs forward and brings his blade down on a weak spot in its joints, hoping to reach its innards and damage it!

Attack! Rolled a modified 23 to hit, which likely hits. 16 hp damage after use of Deadly Assault (Natural even roll).

If it tries to get away from me to attack anyone else, it takes -3 to a Disengage check, and I use Skilled Intercept to take a blow intended for another. If it hits me for more than 10 damage, I use Heavy Warrior to halve the damage.

22:15, Today: Sigmund rolled 18 using 1d20 with rolls of 18. Skilled Intercept.
22:13, Today: Sigmund rolled 1 using 1d8 with rolls of 1. Deadly Assault.
22:13, Today: Sigmund rolled 16 using 3d8+4 with rolls of 1,4,7. Damage.
22:12, Today: Sigmund rolled 21 using 1d20+7. Attack!
22:11, Today: Sigmund rolled 24 using 2d20+5, dropping the lowest dice only. Initiative

Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
The mechanical lion is damaged further by the blow, and lunges at Sigmund only to stumble at the last moment.

You get an additional +2 on attack this round as the lion fumbled.

Round 2. Escalation dice +1. Init order: Sigmund, staggered lion.

Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
Sigmund presses his advantage as the lion trips. He whirls and springs into the air alongside the stumbling lion, flipping his blade in the air and drives it down hard on the lion's back with a ripping sound.

Hits AC 18 (forgot to add the +2 to the dice roller) for 22 hp damage. Trigger Defensive Fighting as I rolled even and am using a shield--Sigmund's AC is 23 until the end of my next turn.

20:33, Today: Sigmund rolled 22 using 3d8+4 with rolls of 2,8,8. Damage if that hits.
20:32, Today: Sigmund rolled 16 using 1d20+8 with rolls of 8. Attack again!

Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
Sigmund is locked for a long moment in a back-and-forth with the lion, unable to break its skin yet.

Don't forget I did miss damage on that attack, as well as this round, since I miss. Employ Defensive Fighting, since I rolled a natural even, to keep my AC at 23.
10:22, Today: Sigmund rolled 15 using 1d20+9. More attacking!

Yet again Sigmund beats the ravening lion back.

Round 4. Escalation dice +3. Init order: Sigmund, staggered lion.

Thanks for reminding me on the miss damage. I think damage on miss = level, so six in total.

Sigmund brings his sword around for a mighty blow--and trips...

Fumble. Man, I hate this dicebot. It is so mean. No miss damage from the nat 1.

The clockwork lion breaks the impasse, closing its jaws on the fighter's arm with an audible crunch.

Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
Fortunately, it's Sigmund's armor that takes most of that bite, but he certainly feels it. He is almost shocked by the hit and his blows on the thing are rather ineffective for a minute.

I apply Heavy Warrior to that attack--I take half damage from it, so only 17 hp.
Stupid dicebot gave me my second nat 1 roll in a row. No miss damage.

18:56, Today: Sigmund rolled 12 using 1d20+11. Counter-attack lion.

Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
Sigmund has fought through worse attacks than this, though his aim is usually better...

Use Tough as Iron to spend a Recovery for 26 hp back. Roll to hit, AC 15 (likely another miss) but at least this time I can use Carve an Opening to increase my crit range to 19-20.  I also do 3 miss damage.

I believe I'm at 33/59 hp now, correct me if I'm wrong.

08:35, Today: Sigmund rolled 26 using 4d10+3, dropping the lowest dice only. Recovery (Tough as Iron).
08:16, Today: Sigmund rolled 15 using 1d20+12. Desperate attack!

Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
The lion rips a huge chunk of flesh from Sigmund's midriff. He collapses to the floor, vision dimming as the clockwork lion turns and limps back up the stairs...

35HP damage, which puts you on -2HPs. Amazingly unlucky series of rolls, although I think that the "seed roll" approach was a mistake :( Do you have any power up your sleeve to avoid this? Your spirit will not depart your body yet, in any event.

Re: Chapter Two: An Urgent Message
Negative, Sigmund is down. I'll leave it to the best uses of the story how or if he revives :-)

And this dicebot is evil. I give re-roll tokens in all my games because of its evilness.
