Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
Although we have two wizards, even though its perhaps not ideal for party balance I would prefer to keep it that way, it represents the random nature of the survivors. Everyone just pick the PC you want and we'll see what kind of party we get :)

On the other hand, I have no objection to anyone who wants to change, entirely your call folks.

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
While we have the time, i thought it would be good to discuss tactics in the very likely event we find ourselves in combat. Sigmund is a tank; he's built for nothing but soaking up damage and making enemies stick to him like glue, while making them regret it if they try to get away or hurt anyone else. He's very good at disengaging from multiple opponents to rescue someone in trouble, so if you're in a bad spot and I don't notice and come peel the hostiles off of you, remind me to do so.

Consequently, this means i'll probably be taking a good chunk of the damage a lot of the time. I'll try to stick close to those of you who aren't as tough and don't have significant defensive abilities, and try to stay near the healers.

Just want to clarify a couple of points, some posts may now look odd!

Firstly, your attackers were all human. Short, primitive, feral and dirty, but still human.

Secondly, the entrance to the valley was revealed above you, as half the hillside collapsed. The valley actually snakes upwards, further into the hills.

Will make another in-game post this evening.

Vander stays close to Zanne, showing her how skills learned on the street can also be used in the wild. She is a quick learner.

Gilad reaches dry ground then promptly doubles back to Sigmund and Martin in turn, relieving the struggling warriors of their packs. They find new strength as their load is lightened.

I am fine with it as long as it doesn't go fundamentally against my character's personality. Play-by-Post can be very slow sometimes. If it moves things along I think it's a good idea.

That being said, I'm in this for the long haul so if we decide to not do that. Well, that's fine too.

Absolutely. Frankly, given that Rhythis is fairly low-key, I'm also fine with him playing straight-man in another player's conversation as well, as long as he's not acting in a massively out of character way. (He's always fine to use his magical talents in some politely helpful cantrippy way.)

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
So, I was thinking about magic items, their quirks and how to use them and had this idea: how about I assign you each someone else's magic item and allow you post comments when one of their quirks comes into play?

We could say that within a party the items all attune to each other, so everyone can hear everyone else's magic items' psychic natter. Or the magic item could "speak" to the PC alone, but you can still post the item comments "in the clear" so that everyone can enjoy them.

Sounds good? If so, which flavour of talk would you prefer?

By default 13th Age assumes that every magic item is unique. No generic +1 longswords. I'm planning on seeing if i can have the shield of ages advance with Sigmund. I love the idea of the magic items having their own background chatter though.  That's guaranteed to be entertaining.

Martin's sword is closely tied to his background and should advance with him. I like how 13th Age handles permanent magic items. Hopefully we don't get many of them as they should be special.

When Martin's story is told, it should be Martin Black wielder of the Sword of the Storm not Martin Black and his Magical Menagerie. Huh, now that I think about it, a Magical Menagerie could be a cool item.

I rather like the idea of us each playing someone else's magic item; allows us to have a certain amount of interplay and friction going on that couldn't be achieved if we were RPing our own items' quirks.

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
This is what I posted to Vander:

You approach the wall cautiously; as your draw closer you notice with distaste that the plaza around the gateway is strewn with bones, tens of thousands of mouldering bones relics buried in foetid mud and stagnant puddles. You feel a palpable atmosphere of evil, something created from the slaughter struggling to be born. You sense that just a few more paces further and your life, your vitality, would be enough to tip the balance.

Now, on the other side of the get is merely a set of broad, wide steps ascending. Think of it as an amphitheater, with the gate at the bottom. Because the plaza is flat, and the valley upward sloping, the wall is only 10ft high on the other side, while 30ft high on your side.

Now Vander only saw a large circle of bones, not a necropolis. Also, you can circle round the edge of the valley and climb the wall there, totally avoiding the bone zone.

Hope this clears things up, you may want to edit some posts.

Sometimes a GM likes to post this stuff privately so that it's not just the GM expositing -- other folks get to give information to the group, too.

I am fine with either way, provided that the GM is cool with it. It does put a bit more onus on players to post full information, but it's not a big deal for me, and it does sometimes make things a bit more interesting.

That said, I'm also not going to metagame, and I'm great with direct-GM posts if that's simpler for everyone else.

Rhythis nailed it, sometimes it's fun to have other folks provide the info to the group. But I think I will desist in cases like this.

Now, am going to post some sort of map to allow you all to visualise the situation, but the wall is a quarter of a mile long and the circle of bones is maybe 200ft diameter, so there is plenty of room to avoid it and scale the walls to either side of the gate.

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
Here is a simple map of the situation. Note that beyond the wall you can't see too much due to its higher elevation, but you can tell it is less a case of a forest dotted with ruins that you have just experienced, it looks more like ruins overgrown with trees.

VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV
FFFFFF____W
FFFFFF____W
FFFFFF____W
FFFFFF___!WAA
FFFFF*__!!#!A
FFFFFF___!WAA
FFFFFF____W
FFFFFF____W
FFFFFF____W
VVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVVV

One letter = 50 yards
V = Valley wall
F = Forest
_ = plaza
W = wall
* = party
# = gate
! = bones
A = shallow amphitheater, with steps leading down to gate

I am happy to try it that way, but you need players who are on the ball as the game can quickly bog down and die if one person is holding up the combat.

Let's try it for next round, but meanwhile can you just post fro this one - the mods will only come into play in edge cases only, so hopefully should be obvious whether you hit or miss without them.

So, the player who originally asked for posting in Init order has left the game. I thought it worked well, ironically until that player starting slowing the posting down!

So, what do you say after some experience. Post in Init order, yeah or nay?

I think it's a pretty goo idea, just because of spells that give bonuses and things like that. I am fine if we want to change back though.

I must admit I was hoping someone knew when ongoing damage and save rolls happen, couldn't find it in a swift search of the rulebook.

Vander, it doesn't specify in the rulebook, but pretty much every fantasy game has thieves tolls as being lock picks and so on, not rope. Plus there was a call for rope earlier (with the wall blocking the plaza) and no-one spoke up, so I'm going to rule that you don't have any. Sorry!

The Empire:
So, I was thinking about magic items, their quirks and how to use them and had this idea: how about I assign you each someone else's magic item and allow you post comments when one of their quirks comes into play?

We could say that within a party the items all attune to each other, so everyone can hear everyone else's magic items' psychic natter. Or the magic item could "speak" to the PC alone, but you can still post the item comments "in the clear" so that everyone can enjoy them.

Sounds good? If so, which flavour of talk would you prefer?

I posted this a while back and never got around to it. But now I have :) So, if any of you would like to 'play' a magic item from the list below, please let me know and I will create a secondary 'character' for you.

Nifft's Doublet (owned by Gilad)
This handsome leather doublet was once the property of Nifft 'Pretty' Boyd, a famous rogue and seducer. Legend has it he had the doublet crafted to provide extra protection against assassination from the hordes of angry cuckolds on his trail.
Quirk: prone to making inappropriate comments around the fairer sex.

Sword of the Storm (owned by Martin)
Made of pure ebony, when close to metal sparks of blue current skitter across the blade. Bound to part of the soul of a blue dragon.
Quirk: talks to the dragon, not you, generally commenting disparagingly on everything the "hairless ape" does wrong.

Deadeye Sling (owned by Rhythis)
Quirk: showoff, bore, "do you remember the time I hit that goblin's nose at 60 paces"

Shield of Ages (owned by Sigmund)
A heavy kite shield crafted from a dull metal with silvery flecks. On its surface is an image of an hourglass whose sands seemed to be constantly running out.
Quirk: massive snob.

Cloak of Elvenkind (owned by Vander)
Quirk: doesn't care much for "lesser races" i.e. anyone not an elf.

Ushug's Sigil (owned by Vethryn)
Quirk: whatever the problem, always suggests violence as the solution.

Wand of Natural Law (owned by Zanne)
Switch of pure rowan, inlaid with ebony sigils.
Quirk: hippy. Also complains when in cities.

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
To pull off the circlet will be painful, as its feelers have already dug into Gilad's forehead. It will also require a real effort of will, as the circlet does not want to be removed and signals its displeasure with blinding head-pain.

To remove, make a Wis roll DC16. It will do 2HP damage as you rip it free.

If you fail by more than five, the feelers dig in a little deeper. The DC of the save increases by one, and the damage increases by +2HP.

Alternatively, someone can rip the circlet off for you. Again, it will require a Will roll DC16 to keep your head still and not thrash around.

You take 2HP damage as it is ripped off, or 4HP if you fail the save above. But either way, it is off.

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
OK, before the battle gets started I need to explain a few things.

1. You are fighting on an inset balcony, 20ft above the floor and 100ft long. What I mean by "inset balcony" is a balcony that is "carved out" of the wall, rather than extending out over the floor. Was trying to find the correct architectural term, but drew a blank. If anyone can help me out would be grateful!

2. It can be accessed from a spiral stair at each end, and a door half way along.

3. The spiral stairs continue upwards. There is another identical balcony 30ft above you.

4. You are at one end of the balcony. The main attack will be after you up the spiral stairs. There is room for one defender there, who will get a +2 on attacks and

5. You will also have to defend the balcony from the other direction. Two can fight side by side, but if either has a large weapon you will both be at -2 on to hit.

To summarise, you will need one holding the stairs, one of two holding the other side, and the rest of you either using ranged attacks or dealing with the climbers.

Here is a side elevation view of the combat zone. One letter = 5ft

XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX < the ceiling

         DD < second balcony

S DD **S < first balcony. Stars are you
SXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXS
SXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXS

Please pick you positions and ask any questions. Posting in the main thread later today.

A query: The two spiral staircases look the same size in the pic, so is there a reason why one of them needs two people to defend it while the other one only needs one?

Also, do we know where the door leads yet?

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
Because you won't be defending both stairs, since the second set is 100ft away. In theory someone could race to the second stairs, but it would leave you very spread out.

You don't know what is behind the door, more of the same palace is your best guess. Might be useful if you have to retreat.

Gets double damage from appearing from shadow walk.

1st attack damage=42, second attack damage-if hits-24, or if miss 16. Will divide these two attack up between spiders if first attack kills one.

Zanne should be able to disengage without penalty now that I am engaging her spider.)

Vander, a few things. I'm by no means an expert, so happy to be corrected, but I believe:
- sneak attacks and double damage for shadow walk only apply to the first attack in a round round.
- the escalation dice is not added to damage, just to hit.

Also, the spider-thing on Zanne is a mook, while the one next to it (on Sigmund) is at full strength. Would you like to switch your attacks around? To help you decide, 16 is enough to hit the mook.

Oops my bad, the spider-thing on Zanne is not a mook, sirry. Will keep your attacks as is and post resolution to the round shortly.

I just reread the Full Heal-Ups rules. We should just press on and earn our Full Heal-Up rather than resting. We should be very close to earning one.

We've had two fights so far. The undead and the brawl we just finished. Was there any I'm forgetting?

Remember, Martin can still heal, he's just hit the point of diminishing returns. Each recovery gives him half the normal amount of hit points and he suffers a -1 defenses and attack rolls until our next Full Heal-Up.

Hi guys

I'm quite new to the rules and perhaps taking over a wizard was not the best thing to do to learn them but I have and was looking for some advice.

is my wizard able to swap out utility spells? i was thinking of the spell that holds doors closed (sorry not got the book with me at the moment) as this could be of help if we need to rest up somewhere Rhyhis could them hold the door closed on the room we rest in until we are all ready to set off again.

I know the answer to that :-)

Unless you have the Adventurer Feat for Utility spells, you have to wait for a full heal-up to swap out Utility spells.

Yow! Looks like we're taking a beating on this one.

I'm not going to commit to anything since Zanne/Vander/Rhythis haven't rolled yet, but looking at the rolls so far, if I (or Sigmund) added our aid to Vethryn's or Martin's rolls, they'd be reduced to taking hits from 2d3 instead of 3d3 tentacles. Not sure how we'd determine which tentacles/attack rolls to discount, though, unless they reroll the new number of attacks altogether.

Still, it might just be enough to save them...

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
Ouch! But see below.

Rhythis, you can cast Hold Portal on a heavy iron door that will delay the creature enough to add 5 to everyone's rolls. This will also give Gilad and Sigmund and extra +10 between them. I think this might be enough to save everyone!

You have 2 choices:

1) Be on the right side of the door when you cast the spell. Make the DC25 on Int to compose yourself in time. If you fail, the standard damage applies plus the spell fails.

2) Be on the wrong side of the door. Spell is cast, but you must endure 3d3 attacks.

Now Rythis' player has said he wants to play a new character in the next adventure. And this one is nearly over. A nod's as good as a wink to a blind bad, if you know what I mean ;)

OK, Rythis' sacrifice gives everyone plus five on their roll. This means:

Sigmund +6
Martin -6
Gilad +7
Zanne -9
Vethryn -6

Looks like a lot hanging on you Vander!

Also Gilad, remember you can chose to take d3 attacks to add another five to your roll. With your boosted AC you will probably live through it ;)

Rather than use the existing hit and damage rolls you have made, let's wait until everything is nailed down then roll again. Except for poor old Rythis, RIP brave wizard!

Okay, so looking at the bonuses that Sigmund, Vander, and I can give out, and what's needed to help Martin, Vethryn, and Zanne make their rolls, we can save two of them completely, but the third will still suffer 1d3 tentacle hits.

And given that those things hurt, an unlucky roll could still mean that kills them outright.

So, uh, how attached is everyone to their current characters?

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
Let me break down what happened to Martin.

16:39, Today: Martin Black rolled 14 using 1d20+10. Str + Mercenary Sergeant + Level.
16:41, Today: Martin Black rolled 5 using 3d3 (1,3,1). Number of Attacks against Martin.
16:44, Today: Martin Black rolled 55 using 5d20 with rolls of 3,20,20,1,11. Attacks vs. Martin, +12 to each.

I missed by 11. That means 3 sets of attacks on Martin. Martin has AC 19, 20 with his shield, and +1 from Vethryn so final AC 21. He is at 10 hit points and out of recoveries.

Group 1, removed by giving him a +1 to his roll, made one attack and missed. If this is removed carry on to:

Group 2, requires an additional +5 (+6 total) to his roll to remove, made three attacks and two critically hit Martin. That's 72 damage right there and Martin is very dead. If theses are removed, carry on to:

Group 3, requires an additional +5 (+11 total) to his roll to remove, made one attack. With a total of 23, it beat his AC of 21 by two points. One hit, 18 damage. He is at 10 hit points and out of Recoveries so while not dead, he is dying.

I intentionally tracked the groups because I knew there was a chance someone would help Martin. If it can be done, cool. But, even if he survives this, he's not likely to be much help in the next fight.

I'm not saying Martin must die. What I'm saying is, save him only if it doesn't mean damage to anyone else. And Martin would agree with me - he is a paladin.

I'll keep Zanne if she can be saved. She missed by 14, so negating at least 9 points, or an extra 4 with the new bonus should do it- she is at full health and can spend a recovery.

Also, wouldn't it be the third set of attacks that get first negated, Martin?

When I ordered them in my mind, I put them in the order I listed them above. If The Empire wishes to change that order, fine with me but I wasn't going to change my mind on their order because it would be convenient - that's cheating. Martin doesn't cheat. :)

So we are close to the end of the adventure, time to think about what's next. How does this sound?

We play out the journey home in a series of adventures. What they are would depend on the partys' Relationship rolls, mingled with my store of 1001 scenarios :) But they would generally involve putting the party in some sort of "save the day" situation or the other.

Once your back and a few levels older and wiser we could move on to to a more epic focus. What exactly would grow from how the various character back-stories play out, we have a lot of scope with most of you :)

I completely open to any other approach too, so don't be shy!

Meanwhile though, one Relationship roll related complication to come ;)

BTW, the closest Army garrison if you are retracing your journey out here is in Brooken, a fortified town guarding one of the passes through the High Docks, perhaps 50 miles as the crow flies, but around 5 or 6 days trek back through the Stalking Trees.

Of course there may be a closer garrison. Anyone that can make an Int roll DC25, with skills that infer knowledge of Army disposition will know of somewhere closer...

Before I make the first post of the new adventure, can you confirm you are heading to Brooken?

Durum has explained in character about the High Ark; those who made thier rolls can confirm his story. It is the highest of the Floating Realms, and is basically a seedstock that can repopulate the world in case of an unamaginable disater. Sort of like this:

Folks, am having a little trouble keeping track of recoveries spent. I know there are some powers that allow a free recovery, so whenever you use one of these please make it clear, as from now on I will always assume a recovery is used when you roll one to make bookkeeping easier.

Meanwhile, for those of you who don't keep your recoveries in your bio, can everyone give me their spends, if any?

Even if the current battle isn't over (though I assume it is), we can each still use our Second Wind to spend a recovery as a standard action.

And I think from now on, I'm going to be taking the average recovery value instead of rolling. Dice haven't been kind to me lately. :)

Some of you may have powers to allow you to bypass the stockade. For the others...

To smash your way though the stockade requires 50HP damage at any location, but will obviously give your position away.

You can try and climb over, but there is a chance you will be seen (enemy gets a Spot roll).

Make a Str roll DC 15
If you fail you are stuck on the outside.
If you fail by 5 or more (or roll a 1)  you are stuck on the outside, you take 3d6 damage and the watchers get a +4 on their Spot roll.

You can also try to slip and slink through gaps in the iron spikes and girders.

Make a Dex roll DC20
If you make this roll, enemy has no chance for a spot.
If you fail you are stuck on the outside and the enemy gets a Spot roll.
If you fail by 5 or more (or roll a 1)  you are stuck on the outside, you take 3d6 damage and the watchers get +4 on their Spot roll..

Once you have all decided and rolled we will see what we can see :)

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
Vander, see the post above.

When you attack the tripod you can target the head with ranged weapons. It has a higher AC but less HPs.

The ballistae are almost ready to fire. Ballista #1 will fire on round 10, #2 on round 15 and #3 on round 20. Past round 20, it doesn't matter if they fire, as the High Ark will be out of range

You can disable the ballistae, or damage the linkages. Alternatively you can assault the central tower itself.

Ballisa 1-3, AC 20, 50HP to disable.
Linkage 1-3, AC 18, 30HP to disable.
Main tower AC 22, 120HP to disable.

However, there are lots of workers swarming about, little clockwork spiders with a claw-full to tools. Each worker can repair 5HP per round. Workers are mooks, AC 16, PD/ED 12, HPs 7.

Nearby:
Ballista #1
Linkage #1
Tripod #1
20 workers

Far Away:
Central tower
Ballista #2-3
Linkage #2-3
Tripod #2
40 workers

"I don't like being this beaten up..." He says to the others. Of course, he is rarely this hurt due to the fact the others draw the foe's attension while he strikes them from behind. Not brave, but it was effective.

(Ooc-spends two recoveries to get back to full hp.)

Oops, apols, missed that. Also, you won't take the ongoing damage until the end of the round I think (or the beginning of the next one) so you can at least act (and if someone grants you a recovery you will be fine).

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
Since the tripod is way above you trying to stomp you like ants the concept in engaged doesn't make sense in this combat, so no penalties for anyone  disengaging.

However, if you want, I can give it a 50% chance to target Sigmund for a stomp each round instead of anyone else representing you goading it and putting yourself in harms way.

Vander, Vethryn's healing means you stay in positive hit points territory this round! Please edit your post as nowyou can act this round (please include recovery roll and roll for ongoing damage).

Also Zanne has given you fire resistance :)

Will the repairing happen before the end of the round? Is it worth trying to take out more workers if Gilad misses some so they can't repair the damage he did? Or should I focus fire on the ballista so the workers can't repair it fast enough?

Also, this round you have +1 to attacks vs the tripod since it's what I last attacked.

Key questions:

1. There is only one tripod left, yes?
2. Is it staggered? Or just dazed?

Vander, too late to retcon now but Shadow Walk only allows you to move to places you could reach normally, which doesn't include the top of a giant tripod (unless you take some high level feats).

Since you're up there now, make a Dex roll DC20 (level and Dex apply) each round to stay on. If you fail my five or more you take 3d10 damage falling damage, otherwise 2d4.

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
It will be a tight race if you are to get to the tower ahead of the steadily expanding cloud of doom!

You have two choices:
Take a circuitous route to avoid the worst of the collapsing hellhole or rush on right through the eye of the storm:

Circuitous
You are dashing over treacherous ground in the dark, with the glow of the hellhole and random bolts of lightning from the clouds of steam spreading above it.

- Party is hit by d8 lightning bolts.
- Make a Str, Dex or Con roll DC20 to keep the pace (relevant skills apply). Fail and you get hit by an additional lightning bolt.

Lightning bolt: +10 vs PD, 3d8 damage.

Then you need to fight d6 steam elementals (each a L4 challenge) to win the keep.

Eye of the storm
Conditions as above, plus the ground is literally falling away beneath you, with gouts of steam and sharp iron girders forcing their way into the air.

- Make a Str or Dex roll DC25. For each 5 you fail, lose one recovery.
- Party is hit by 2d6 lightning bolts.

You will arrive at the outpost ahead of the steam elementals and can press on to the gate.

You can split the party too, in which case the eye of the storm crew can rally the defenders against the steam elementals.

Feel free to edit you post, you can still start heading for the gate but remember Sigmund has the deactivation sigil. Meanwhile will resolve the combat to date.

So, waiting on Vethryn's player to check in. Did you know Vethryn is married to the Northern Colossus? To coin a phrase, it's complicated. But that entity will certainly intervene to pull Vethryn out of... what's about to happen. The plan was, Vethryn's player would be able to bring in a new PC as the Colossus pulls a switcheroo.

I will be talking with you all in PMs about upgrading your magic items. We're coming up to Christmas now and RL is pretty busy, so we'll be taking a more leisurely pace for the next couple of weeks :)

It kinda doesn't matter. The key is whether this is the same year that they normally are in, or whether time travel has occurred. You can make up whatever numbers you want :-)

Sigmund, you have (probably) already met him - the shopkeeper in the Emporium. From post 52:

The Empire:
"Well sir, Practical Magic is what gives us our light, our food, our wonderful ornaments. The emporium is open all hours, why not go in and meet the Owner himself. He can tell you all about it, and perhaps teach you a few simple knots".

Folks, you may have noticed that this adventure, at the moment, is a little more talky than the first two. I hope it's to everyone's taste and the people not posting aren't getting bored!

One thing we can do is, like in recent posts, let two or more people ask questions then post a multi-answer. It looks a bit odd, but you can sort out the questions and answers in your head :) So feel free to chime in!

Also, at some point it might make sense to split into two or more groups to cover more ground. I know, don't split the party and all that, but in this case I'll be happy to.

Thanks for the positive feedback folks :) Don't want to interrupt your deliberations in-game, but one question:

Gilad Rott:
As they depart...

Is that depart as in "move to the next room and find some seats in a quit corner" or depart as in "leave the House and Mirrors and talk on the street"?

Also
Oclur:
"Food? That's it?"

Wasn't sure if that was a rhetorical question, but can answer that in the Appendix thread if it wasn't :)

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
OK, have I got this right: Gilad is heading back to the Emporium to learn some braids and distract the Owner while Vander and Zanne find another way in to snoop around. Sigmund is looking for someone to talk to and Shakru is waiting outside the Emporium in case backup is needed. Oclur, what about you?

Also, we need to talk about Durum: his player PMed me a few weeks back, he sadly has health issues and can't rejoin the game. There are three ways to handle it:

1) He never arrived, same as Vethryn. Maybe the High Druid pulled him out as a reward for being the prime mover in saving the High Ark.

2) He's been here all along, strangely silent. I will NPC him in a minimalist way.

3) I try and recruit a new player. Not ideal at this stage in the game I feel.

Which option do you folks like?

Alrighty :)

Vander make a Dex roll DC 20 for housebreaking (skills apply) and an Int DC 25 for detecting magical traps (skills apply).

Zanne make an Int DC 20 and 25 for general magical housebreaking support (skills apply). Based on these rolls will start a new thread for you.

Sigmund and Gilad, we will roleplay out your encounters in separate threads. Oclur, what are you planning to do, are you striking off alone or joining Gilad in the Emporium?

Will get the individual threads up by the end of the week, apols for the slow start but RL is a little hectic at the mo.

OK folks, a dilemma is sometimes good but I think you might be overthinking this one.

Grabbing the braids may or may not be a feasible plan, but in any event you will surely have to fight the Owner to do it. With (you assume) the hordes charging towards the city on all sides there just isn't the time for the sneaky/infiltration option, not with the Owner standing right there an watching you.

So it still basically comes down to the same choices: start braiding or roll for Init :)

Folks, the last thing I wanted to do with my little dilemma was to kill the game! If you like I can provide some stuff your characters wouldn't know to make the choices clearer.

But before that, remember you have an oracle in your back pocket :)

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
Folks, I have a question for you ahead of the Owner answering Gilad in-game.

I am thinking about the next set of adventures in the Heroic tier, but wanted to run my outline by you all first in case anyone has any objections.

Because of your intervention, this pocket realm has be de-synced from its original reality. When you return it will be to an alternate present. Your Relationship rolls for this adventure and the next would help me determine how the Icons' power dynamic, and your relationship with them, has changed.

I am keeping some stuff back of course but I had an idea that getting back to your own reality might be the goal of the heroic tier. And then there's the classic trope where at the end, you all decide to stay put in the new one. We'll see :)

I you are not down for this, there will be a way to return to your base reality.

Posting here before rolling for Sigmund's full action, in case this effects anything Vander's doing. Looks like I got a 21 for initiative; would that mean Sigmund's turn comes before the Owner makes it into the Emporium?

Sigmund rolled 21 using 2d20+6, dropping the lowest dice only with rolls of 8,15.  Initiative.

Apols Gilad, I rolled for Sigmund's Init but forgot to roll twice and take the best.

Will whatever Sigmund does have an impact on the Owner getting into the Emporium? If so, will roll the round back to Sigmund's turn.

Vander, Shadow Walk is indeed a move action, but moving past Shakru into the Emporium is also a move action, so no attack this round. If Gilad decides to roll things back feel free to take another approach.

I was under the impression Shadow walk included a move. Its sorta in the power, as you can get a better feat on it to change it from a normal move to a teleport type move.

By the way, can the owner still attack me out of turn?

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
Sorry, I was not able to post yesterday. Here is a summary.

quote:
Shadow Walk

You gain the shadow walk at-will power:

As a move action before you have used your standard action this turn, if you are not engaged, you can make the following ‘attack’ against all nearby enemies, targeting the enemy among them with the highest Mental Defense.

Attack: Charisma + Level vs. MD

Hit: Remove yourself from play. At the start of your next turn, return anywhere nearby that you could have moved to normally during your turn, and deal double damage with your first rogue attack that turn.

Miss: No effect. You can’t attempt to shadow walk again until your next turn, but you still have your standard action this turn.

Adventurer Feat On a miss, you can still use your move action normally (but still can’t shadow walk this turn).

Champion Feat Twice per day, you can reroll the rogue attack that follows your successful use of shadow walk.

Epic Feat Twice per day, you can reappear from your shadow walk in a nearby location you wouldn’t have been able to reach unimpeded physically, for instance, on the other side of a portcullis or door, or high up a wall.

Now, the only nearby foe was Shakru, not the owner or his magic sword. I have the adventurer's feat-so I had missed Shakru's MD I would still have my normal action. Furthermore, as they power 'removes me from play'-I don't think the sword would be able to attack me-however, I don't think I would be able to block the owner's movements this turn because I am 'not on the game board'.

Right, Sigmund's action was a miss as well, so it probably doesn't alter the Owner's action. One query, since Gilad and Sigmund both engaged him to make melee attacks, would they get Opportunity Attacks against the Owner when he moves into the Emporium?

Re: Meta-game & Rules Discussion
OK, I think my mistake was not using the Owner's MD rather than Shakru's, since the Owner, though fleeing, is technically nearby.

Vander, please assume you Shadow Walk failed and post your standard action please.

Also, Sigmund and Gilad, you might get an AoO - don't have my rulebook hear (am on my hols in sunny Tessin), but if he makes a disengage roll he can avoid the AoO, right??

In that case, can I use my tumbling strike to disengage form Shakru, move, and then re engage with the owner? As I would have moved past Shakru, I would still have a move action to block the owner's movement after my tumbling strike.

You are not engaged with Shakru yet Vander. I don't think you cab actually engage the Owner with this action (you'd be using your move action to engage Shakru, then your standard action to make the tumbling strike and disengage), but you could use it to get past Shakru into the Emporium without triggering an opportunity attack.

Gilad, since it's easy to be misunderstood online I want to tell you something: that's a pretty big assumption you have made IC...

When the Owner was last "killed" by his floating sword, at the last second he disappeared and one of the unfortunates from the workhouse appeared in is place. He and the Owner swapped places. What happened just now looked identical to that...

Always expect the unexpected! I thought you were going to press a few crystals randomly :)

So Gilad, please roll 4d20 (don't forget include all rolls), then consult the tables. Higher is better. This may be a good time to remind everyone that you get one free re-roll per combat.

Exterior shield
1     Shield feedback loop. All of the townsfolk are crisped by a surge of radiant energy.
2     Shield upgrade. Shield HPs are doubled.
3-7   Nothing happens.
8-10  Shield drops for one round.
11-13 Shield drops for two rounds.
14-17 Shield drops for three rounds.
18-19 Shield disabled.
20    Shield projected forwards 15ft or so, encompassing all the villagers.

Interior shields
1     Shield feedback loop. Vander turned to dust, attacked with +8 versus PD 20 damage.
2     Shield upgrade. Shield HPs are doubled.
3-12  Nothing happens.
13-14 Shield drops for one round.
15-16 Shield drops for two rounds.
17-18 Shield drops for three rounds.
19-20 Shield disabled.

Secret Bit

Random effect to Gilad from stabbing a magical nexus
1     Magical overload. Every item in the Emporium's showroom explodes. All townsfolk are killed, all PCs in the room attacked +15 VS PD 20 damage.
2     Hole in reality. Teleported outside.
3     Localised Surge. The floating sword goes uncontrollably berserk.
4-12  Frazzled! Take (16-your roll)/2 d6 damage from the feedback.
13-14 Zapped. Stunned for one round.
15-17 Nothing happens.
18    Refreshed. Take a free healing surge.
19    Infused with magic. All magical effects doubled until the end of the adventure.
20    Supercharger. Gilad's sword gains a permanent power-up (to be determined).
