Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
In reply to Sigmund (msg # 499):

"Ummm...try hitting it with a big bit of metal?" Vander said, shrugging. "You go first." He snickers, making sure to hide behind Sigmund just in case the sphere can understand him.

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
Sigmund glowers at the rogue. "I would prefer not to end up a slave of some necrotic intelligence, thanks. Or of anyone, for that matter."

He looks at the little wizard. "Perhaps you and Gilad should study it, see what you can learn about it."

"We could start by walking around it- if nothing else, we could glance down the other halls." Zanne suggests. "I'd rather avoid more surprises today."

Martin nods at Zanne's suggestion. "That's a good suggestion. Perhaps there is more to be learned without doing anything to ... that," disgust is clear in his voice as he utters the final syllable.

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
"We're talking about it as though it's alive..." Gilad murmurs, stroking his chin. "Perhaps it is, at that."

"Zanne's right, we ought to scout the other paths first, see if we can uncover anything else about what this... thing is."

Even as he speaks, the bard studies the swirling patterns within the sphere, trying to determine if anything he's heard in tales from ages past bears resemblance to the sight now before them...

Gilad Rott rolled 9 using 1d20+8 with rolls of 1. INT Check + Wandering Minstrel.
Hoo boy, another natural 1.

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
The exits on either side lead to small, contained complexes of storerooms, barracks and cells. The opposite doorway is the same, but there is also another way out, a long, upward-sloping passage ending in another shimmering necrotic barrier. From what you can judge, it would emerge somewhere on the other side of the plaza to the palace, close to where you first saw the ziggurat.

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
Sigmund seems disgusted by the lack of other things around. "So, unless we find this globe-thing of use, we've gained nothing else from this trip, it seems, except nightmares." His impatience to leave this place and his disappointment in it are clearly visible on his face.

"Sounds good to me!" He said, nodding at Zanne and giving her a wink. Then he proceeded to head out and start checking for things of interest-or maybe just a way of climbing up and grabbing the orb. That plan would be kept best for last however...

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
"We've gained a kingdom, my prince." Gilad answers Sigmund, watching the strange globe. "A kingdom of grandeur and terrible might, forged from the otherwordly power of this fallen star, and brought down by its own hubris. A fine tale, should we survive to tell it."

"But now... we can leave this sphere to its empire of ruins and start our long road back to civilization, and perhaps that's our best bet given what became of the tribesfolk who tried to control it, or we can deal with it here and now, either try to rid the world of it once and for all..." the bard looks down at the necrotic blade, which cut through the barrier of the same substance, "Or... speak to it, as these people once did, and hope we can retain control over ourselves." Gilad looks over at the diadem.

"I can't make that decision on my own. What say you, friends?"

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
"We shouldn't leave it. It is a danger to whoever may stumble across the place. We should destroy or control it, but not leave it."

She pauses for a moment,  and seems to be struggling to come to a decision.

"But one thing to keep in mind: if we try to control it, the world is different now. Largely united under the Emperor. And... others.  If we go crazy and start doing something terrible,  there is someone to stop us.

The only thing is, I think someone would then need to put on the diadem."

Sigmund's face grows a bit dark at this reference to his lineage, but he says nothing right away.

Vethryn:
"We shouldn't leave it. It is a danger to whoever may stumble across the place. We should destroy or control it, but not leave it."

She pauses for a moment,  and seems to be struggling to come to a decision.

"But one thing to keep in mind: if we try to control it, the world is different now. Largely united under the Emperor. And... others.  If we go crazy and start doing something terrible,  there is someone to stop us.

Sigmund holds up his hand. "There is another option, you know. If we think it could be a danger if it falls into the wrong hands, we could try to destroy it."

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
"Destroy or control..." Gilad looks between Sigmund and Vethryn, then between the necrotic sword and the diadem.

"I will abide by whatever choice the majority favors, but speaking for myself... I don't want to leave here without answers, or a better idea of what we've stumbled upon." The bard's glance falls onto the diadem. "I'm inclined to try and 'talk' to the sphere, whatever the risks."

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
Martin looks at the sphere and then to his companions. "I believe we should destroy to bury this abomination," he says firmly. "Unfortunately I have no idea how yet. If we had some way to cause a collapse of this chamber, but that's far beyond my power or skill."

Unlike the palace above, the rooms and corridors of the cellar complex are bare of decoration...

Sigmund sighs and stares at the ball, back in the central chamber with the others. His features, broad and serious, are set. "Well, again, I say we destroy it somehow. A weapon like this should not fall into the wrong hands."

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
"You may be right..." Gilad replies, "But I'm of a mind to make one more attempt to listen to it, if only to get some insight into our options."

The bard looks around at the others.

"That means someone has to put on the diadem again, namely me. If this thing leaves any lingering effects on the mind, I'm already tainted; best not to spread it around. Besides," Gilad grins faintly, "this is my stupid idea."

"Any objections?"
The bard holds out a hand towards Vethryn, waiting for her to hand the diadem to him.

"Perhaps I should put it on. For one I have dealings with magic and my training in the arts have disciplined my mind slightly to this sort of thing"

The little wizard then smiled sadly "anyway if it all goes wrong at least one of you can carry my cold dead corpse out of here .... I'd be hard pressed to lift any of your equipment "

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
"Rhythis, you're still hurt," says Vethryn.  "You should take a moment to rest before risking anything like that, and we might need your  expertise to tell if anything is going wrong."  She hands it to Gilad, careful not to unwrap it, and stands ready to pull it off him again if need be.

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
"Thank you." Gilad accepts the diadem from Vethryn. "I... hope it doesn't come to this, but if I fall under the star's influence, I may need your strength of will once more to remove the circlet."

He sighs.

"Plying my trade across the Empire, it's a boon to have a free spirit prone to flights of fancy, but right now, I'd much prefer my resolve were bolstered by a faith, even faith in your... unconventional patron."

Gilad unwraps the diadem and begins lowering it onto his head...

"But that's a story for another time, I believe..."
