Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
The little wizard grits his teeth waiting for the mind attack that might come from the orb. At the same time he rolls back his sleeves and gripping his wand firmly in his hand starts to recite a spell ready to attack if needs be.

Martin silently shakes his head at this folly. He makes sure his mace and shield are ready for action.

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
When he takes the diadem, Gilad does not have to fight the huge compulsion to put it on as before; there is a flash of pain as the circlet bonds to his skull, but unlike before the presence of the sphere is massively multiplied. Gilad is intensely aware of a gnawing hunger that can never be satisfied, but also senses a potentiality that was not there before. The sphere is ready, and eager, to give birth, to create a necrotic being shaped to the bard's will...

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
Gilad winces in pain as the diadem digs in, trying to focus on the thoughts emanating from the sphere.

"It... wants to 'create' something. Like the creatures we've fought? I... I think I can influence what it builds. I'd rather it not create anything new at all, but I don't know if I can stop it..."

"Whatever it is, its hunger... can never be sated."

Concentrating his mind on the sphere, Gilad tries to dig deeper for any sign of a consciousness within the star beyond its pure instinctive hunger...

"If it must create something, influence it to create something peaceful.  A sort of pack animal, perhaps."

She looks worried about Gilad, but also as though she is trying to suppress her excitement and curiosity about what may happen next.

"How about a way to find what we came here for!? So we can get the hell out of here with all speed? Because I don't know about you, but poisonous necrotic spider monsters are not my cup of tea..." Vander offered while pulling at the collar of his shirt.

Gilad, make an Int or Wis roll to delve deeper into the sphere, skills may apply.

Stone-faced Sigmund nods at the sphere. "Got room for that in your backpack? Because, like it or not, in some ways that's exactly what we came for, in all its horror."

Delving through his own mind for any recollections of legends concerning ancient artifacts or mystically-derived mental links, Gilad tries to gleam further insight into the sphere and its consciousness, if any...

Gilad Rott rolled 22 using 1d20+8 with rolls of 14. INT Check + Wandering Minstrel.

"Exactly Sigmund, that is why we're here. To destroy that abomination," Martin says. "It must feed on something. There has to be a way to starve it if nothing else."

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
Gilad catches fragments only of the sphere's persona, which is disturbingly alien. He knows it has waited here, hungry, for hundreds of years, and could have waited, patiently, of thousands more. The bard knows the sphere is trying to lure him into birthing a creature. But there is something else, something the sphere does not want him to know.

Gilad, you will need to make another Int/Wis roll, this time DC28, to wrench the thought from the sphere's "mind". However, there is a way... you can let the necrotic diadem further invade your skull. For each HP you spend, you can add one to the roll. If you fail by five or more, the sphere will take control for a few seconds and do something.

"There's more here... something it's trying to hide..." Gilad speaks to the others as he concentrates on the sphere. "In for a penny, in for a pound... I think this is going to hur--"

Yes, it does.

Gilad screams, crumpling to his knees, as he tries to pry a crucial piece of knowledge from the sphere...

Gilad Rott rolled 37 using 1d20+27 with rolls of 10. INT Check + Wandering Minstrel + 19hp.

Decided to go all out. Can I use a recovery now, or would that disrupt the mental connection?

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
Gilad's consciousness merges with the hot, hungry thoughts of the sphere, until he discovers what the creature fears - it can be induced to release all of it's necrotic energy in a huge explosion. With a flash, Gilad remembers an obscure mosaic in the palace above, showing an assault on a walled city that used a swarm of exploding creatures to breach its defences. Judging by the difference in scale, if you can induce the sphere to explode it will level half the city...

The DC of doing this will depend on how far away from the sphere you want to be, but if, say, you tried at the top of steps leading down to the plaza it would be DC33. But first...

The creature reads Gilad's intentions and pushes the bard from his mind, but too late - the knowledge is out. A wash of anger almost brings Gilad to his knees and the surface of the sphere starts to roil and deform as something tries to push out, something that was not shaped by a human mind at all...

Roll Init please, you will have one free round until whatever it is emerges.

Martin shrugs and readies himself for battle. Despite his desire to draw his blade, he keeps a tight hold on his mace as he needs the defense the shield provides.

15:50, Today: Martin Black rolled 20 using 1d20+1 with rolls of 19. Initiative.

Vethryn rushes to stand just in front of Martin. "Ushug, protect us!" she shouts, raising her holy symbol in one hand, ready to intercept any attack against him.  A shimmering ghostly shield appears in front of the pair of them, and of Sigmund as well.

Using Shield of Faith, +1 to AC for Martin, Sigmund and me.

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
"It... it can be destroyed..." Gilad gasps, "But we have to get far away..."

Shaking his head as he regains his senses, the bard struggles back to his feet. He draws his sabre, watching the creature emerging from the sphere, but starts backing off cautiously. Still wearing the diadem, he tries to focus on the necrotic barrier they encountered earlier, the one apparently leading outside back to the plaza, seeing if he can control it...

Gilad Rott rolled 11 using 1d20+6 with rolls of 5. Initiative.

Can I command the necrotic barrier to open? If not, can I detonate it?

Re: Chapter One: The Hidden Valley
The necrotic barrier leading to the plaza is at the end of several hundred feet of rooms and corridors. None the less, Gilad can almost sense it from here and has no doubt with his new found connection to the circlt it will impede him no more than a gossamer web.

Meanwhile, even the least psychically inclined among the get the feeling whatever is coming out of the sphere, it's bad news...

"Let's run," Vethryn says.  "I'll stay in the back. Let's get as close as we can to the exit, at least, before we have to fight it. Then if some of us are wounded and need to flee, we'll have a better shot at escaping."
