Re: Episode 1.06: The Chicago Caper

No one ever bothers to see what a cable guy was actually doing. Or phone guys, or meter men. Mail guys never had to do more than walk by, but a generic exterminator outfit would let someone wander around the perimeter of a house looking for open windows and people would think he belonged there. Cable guy made more sense today.

Once on the room Dren look across the roof and pointed to where he wanted Ian to set the bag. Kneeling down he started to look at a very large metal tower that probably had nothing to do with cable TV but since he didn't know what it did, he figured no one else did either. "Kay. Th' plans tha' Raven give us th'all clear an' you go let'er in through th' roof access. I'll shot a zipline ov'r," he pulled out the grappling gun and smiled, "Always want'd one o'these an' now I'm writtin' it off as a business expense. Anyway, I'll zip ov'r with cans o'paint for th' Boston Red Sox. If it's all clear I'll flash ya wit' th' green light. If ya dinna see th' light in 3 minutes ya, bail out wit' no questions asked 'cuz I've been napped. If I flash whit' it means I need 5 extra minutes first. Kay?"

Dren wanted to make sure Ian was clear on the first part then continued, "You come over second wit' all our gear leavin' nothin' behind and Raven'll take care of 'er part and 'ead ov'r when it's clear. Clear?"

Iain followed Dren like he knew exactly what he was doing. He set down the bag where Dren wanted it, and nodded throughout his explanation.

"Let Raven in, leave nothing behind. Clear." Iain said finally.

Re: Episode 1.06: The Chicago Caper

Raven stood inside the empty apartment looking out the windows. She and Dren had been there earlier posing as a couple looking for an apartment to rent. While Raven distracted the landlord with questions about the kitchen appliances and closet space, Dren had quietly picked his pocket for the key. After making an impression of it, Dren had slipped the key back into the unaware landlord's pocket.

Raven checked her watch. The guys should've had enough time to set up by now. One last look out the windows, and then she sent a text to Dren, ::Blue skies.::

Re: Episode 1.06: The Chicago Caper

Dren's phone buzzed and he pulled it out look at it and texted back, ::LOL::. Anyone seeing the exchange would never know that she'd just cleared them zip line over and he's just given her the okay to come join them on the room. Handing to Iain he said, "Give this t'Raven before ya come over wit' th' gear." He then steadied his grapple gun and fired.

"Oh, tis a beautiful thing!" He wound the line around his anchor point, secured it with a metal clip and cut it to pack the zip gun back up.

The hook sailed across the empty street and snaked between the metal supports. It made a clang as the hook set firmly and secure. A dog in the distance barked a couple of times, but no lights turned on. In a few seconds, all was quiet again.

Iain glanced at his watch, waiting for either Dren's signal or the third mnute to pass. As he peered in the darkness for Dren's light, he kept an ear out for Raven's approach.

Raven had exited the apartment right after sending Dren the text. She approached the door to the roof and tapped on it so softly that most people wouldn't have heard it. A vampire, however, would be a different story.

Dren clipped on and zipped over quietly, long before Raven was up on the roof.

Once on the other side he quickly stopped and looked around to see if the coast was clear.

Seeing no one, he give Ian the signal for to go ahead to zip over.

Re: Episode 1.06: The Chicago Caper

Dren landed cat-like on the top of the stadium steps in the corner of the center field seats. The rows upon rows of plastic and steel seatbacks filled his view like a huge cemetery of tightly clustered tombstones. A cold steel plate with a letter and a number was the only indicator of the soul that may have been in each seat.

The famed ivy-covered wall separated the outfield from the spectators. Its leaves, forever green, waved only slightly with the evening breeze in the pale city lights. The field was crisscrossed with the shadows of the steel girders and light poles. Nothing but the eerie quiet of the dormant stadium greeted his arrival.

Iain quietly opened the door for Raven, nodded to the archeologist and waited for the signal. A few seconds later the green light arrived.

After a last check to make sure they weren't leaving anything behind, he zipped over to reach Dren.

Raven gave Iain a few minutes to get safely to the other side, and then she followed him over on the zip-line. After she slipped out of the harness, she dug out a map of the stadium that included a few handwritten notes. "I suppose we can check both dugouts, and maybe homeplate. I'm mostly interested in the Upper Deck Box seating, section 401 to 437. Mr. Sianis and his goat were seated somewhere in that area."

Re: Episode 1.06: The Chicago Caper

As a matter fact, the three ‘vandals’ had landed in the concessions under the Budlight Bleachers seating area, section 342. These cheap seats were at the completely opposite end of the field from the section Mr. Sainis reportedly had sat with the infamous goat. All seemed quiet. The winter breeze, partly blocked by the structure did not have quite the bite as it did on the open roof across the street.

Raven adjusted her gloves, making sure that her hands were covered. She didn't want any accidental contact with the seats or railings of the stadium. The last thing she needed was to be flooded with images from some of the millions of random people that had passed through here over the decades. She had a couple of specific places she wanted to check out, and then she wanted to get out of here. "All of our targets are over there." She pointed across the field to the other side of the stadium. She started to walk down the steps. "Let's get down onto the field and make our way to the home dugout."

"Iain. Can ya make yer way to th' otherside?" Dren gestured for the gear to be put out of sight under a stadium seat and hands Iain the light with the lenses. "Green means 'go' and Red means 'wait'. We're not going to b'able t'see much but we'll be pretty exposed."

"Sure, no problem." Iain nodded, accepting the light from Dren.

After hiding the gear as directed, he quietly began to make his way to the other side, keeping to the shadows.

In the quiet air of the night, he kept his ears open for any unexpected noise.

"Unless either of you can think of a good reason why I should, I wasn't planning on checking all the bases, or the press box. Beyond the dugouts and the specific box seats, I'm not sure there's anything else worth checking."

Re: Episode 1.06: The Chicago Caper

Iain silently worked his way toward the other side of the field, keeping to the shadows. He heard nothing beyond the ordinary sounds of the city, slightly muffled by the bowl of the stadium, and his own footfalls.

Raven and Dren made their way toward the field. After working their way down the right field bleachers and they walked the narrow section that connected the outfield seats with the infield seats known as the Budlight Bleacher Box.

They passed the right field foul line pole into the larger portion of the stadium seating. Dren and Raven found a short section of the wall and climbed down onto the field. At home plate, Raven prepped to sense anything out of the ordinary.

"And here I was thinking this was that game with goalies, nets, and men running around in tight shorts," Raven whispered back to Dren with a sarcastic smile on her face.

She took one of her gloves off as she knelt next to homeplate. She waited a moment, giving herself time to focus her concentration, and then Raven placed her bare palm on the ground. She closed her eyes as she tried to filter out lots of extraneous information. Her brow wrinkled in puzzlement. Raven removed her hand and looked at Dren. "There's something here. Something... preternatural. But it doesn't seem to be centered around homeplate." She stood and looked toward the outfield. "We need to check out that wall."

Iain glanced back at Raven and Dren, keeping an eye on the situation nearby. Aside from the occasional car and the obligatory drunkard, the night was quiet.

A good night indeed... Assuming, of course, things kept going well.

Dren, following Raven, was ready with gear to climb down if needed and stopped when he saw she had it easily enough. He shrugged and stuffed the elastic cord back. Keeping his distance Dren checked his gloves, ready to move if needed but also making sure his sleeve was down to the wrist. The last time Raven has gotten an accidental reading off him in a stressful moment the following debate had lasted longer than they had the luxury of time for tonight.

Re: Episode 1.06: The Chicago Caper

Raven’s bare hand pushed through the dense covering of flat, green leaves and twisted stems to the outfield wall beneath the ivy covering. The air was momentarily still, as if time held its breath.

After a few seconds, the vines themselves rustled and stirred. Quickly and without warning, they moved, twisting and spiraling around Raven’s wrist and up her arm, In a second, they had incased her arm to the elbow and continued toward her shoulder. It was as if her arm was incased in a Chinese Finger Trap.
