"Right, Gemma you can't make that particular recipe here." Eric said. She rolled her eyes and followed a slightly confused Helen into the kitchen.
"What should we see?" he asked.

Re: Ultimate X-Men (530) The Breakup (One Shot)
Nathan was torn, he didn't want to sit around the mansion anymore moping. It felt so unnatural to sulk, he often found himself engaging in half-hearted shenanigans to try to convince the others, and himself, that he was OK. Yesterday he lazily slid down the banister and lacking any willpower to actually hold himself upright fell halfway down. He lied on the floor for an hour, not hurt, just emotionally exhausted.

But did he really want to go there? It was an important place in their relationship. First date, first kiss, first time he felt that he could still have a life after becoming a mutant. His feelings toward her were still too complicated, even more so that Julio was back on his feet.Maybe this is what he needed. To get out, to go back there and prove it's just a place. Maybe then he could convince himself that she was just a girl.

"Who cares what we see? It'll be good to go somewhere without wearing that uniform for a change." Nathan doubted he was convincing anyone with his tone, but they didn't call him on it. They had been so delicate with him since he came back, like busting his chops was going to send him packing. It was infuriating.

Re: Ultimate X-Men (530) The Breakup (One Shot)
They took two cars. In one Eric was driving with Helen up front and
Nathan and TK in the back with all the goodies. The second was driven by
Jeff with Gemm riding shotgun, Julio and Kurt in the backseat.
They parked beside each other and brought out folding chairs. Passed
around drinks, popcorn and candy. Helen and Gemma lay on the hood of
Eric's car, TK beside them in a fold up chair. Kurt and Eric sat together
while Julio and Jeff argued over who was the designated driver, and who
would be drinking the beer Jeff had brought. They didn't know it yet,
but the answer was Gemma.

About half an hour into the Comedy, Nathan saw something that caught his eye.

Re: Ultimate X-Men (530) The Breakup (One Shot)
The familiar flash of purple he had been aching to see wasn't just his imagination. He had to stop himself from running to her. Nathan slid off the roof of the van and told the others he was going to get TK some soda. He pushed through the hole in the fence and started walking. She would be there, where they went that night. She must have come alone, Magneto wouldn't have approved of her talking to him. It was maybe the first and only time she would put him before the cause.

As he came across the small clearing he saw her, sitting anxiously on a stump. Her knees being hugged to her chest with her chin resting on them. She bit her lip nervously as he came closer. Betsy looked so . . . hurt. It took all his effort to keep from comforting her. From holding her and saying it would all be Ok. He had to keep from lying to her despite all of hers. It hurt.

"Hey . . ." Nathan let the word break the silence but was unsure how or if he should continue.

Betsy's heart ached at the sight of him. The cracks in his skin pulsed and he began to glow through his shirt. She wasn't supposed to be here. She wasn't supposed to see him. He'd chosen his path. He'd chosen to leave her. But it hurt so badly not seeing him, not telling him she loved him one last time.
She hears his voice and it's too much. She jumps from her seat and kisses him.

He had missed this, her and him together. It felt like a part of himself had gone away that night and he had just found it again. He held her close, it was where she belonged. But there were bigger things at play than young fools in love. Things that put them at odds, made them enemies. Things that could not be overlooked. He pushed her away.

"We can't." Nathan met her eyes as he said the words. He couldn't bear the pain he saw there and looked away. "We just can't-" The words wouldn't come. "I don't think this is something we can work out."

Re: Ultimate X-Men (530) The Breakup (One Shot)
His words are like a dagger in her heart. His thoughts a flurry of pained emotion.
"Please love, please. I... I need you. I'll do anything you ask, anything short of leaving the Brotherhood. Whatever promises you need, what ever truths you want. Please... just please. she began to sob.
It was all too much. She'd left her family for Magneto, betrayed her country for her race. He had taken everything from her, and she'd given them willingly. But she refused to lose this. Refused to lose her Spitfire. She could make it work, she was clever enough to hide it from Magneto. All she needed was for Nathan's arms around her, the heat of his body clutched to hers.

Re: Ultimate X-Men (530) The Breakup (One Shot)
At the mention of the Brotherhood Nathan's sadness subsided, replaced with anger. He could see his own glow lighting up Betsy's figure even at their distance. She would still choose them, in spite of everything they meant to each other. He snapped.

"Could you promise no more death? No? I didn't think it was your call! And Truth! Why start now? You kept me so deep in your lies I didn't even know my friends were hurt." His tirade was causing him to flare up. Betsy had reeled back from him. His words appeared to be hitting home, but for all he knew she was faking her reaction, he got louder. "You let that psycho trick you into killing people for his cause! Julio's better by the way! Thanks for asking. He could be lying in the dirt if you had your way though. I still can't look him in the eye, I can't. Not without remembering I almost chose to be with you."

Re: Ultimate X-Men (530) The Breakup (One Shot)
That last comment stung. Not the pain of a broken heart, but the pain of just how naive Nathan really was.
"I'm sorry! I didn't ask for that to be what Magneto wanted. But don't you dare ask me if there will be no more deaths, you self righteous ASS!" she reached out and slapped him. For a moment she feared she'd gone to far, but there wasn't time to back down.
"Your right, I can't promise you there will be no more death. Do you know where I've been? We just had a mission in Texas. We were there to liberate a camp full of illegal immigrants from Mexico that were mutants. Ones deemed too powerful to be sent back to their homes, where I might add they are treated worse than even here!" she began to choke on her words, the pain of those memories still to fresh in her mind.
"They got wind we might come. They sent a Reaver." she showed him her memories of it. The grizzly way they'd been butchered. Two dozen mutants torn apart like slaughter animals. Tears streamed down her face.
"I can't promise you there will be no more killing, you foolish little boy. But I can promise we're trying to do something about it. Magneto didn't trick me into killing. The British government has had me killing since I was fifteen. she turned away from him, she couldn't look him in the eyes.
"There are reasons I... I kept things from you. I know what the world is really like Nathan. And you just don't. And that's what I love about you. And.. and I didn't want that to change, I didn't want you to think about me like that, didn't want you to even have to think about the evils I've seen." she wanted so much for him to hold her.

Re: Ultimate X-Men (530) The Breakup (One Shot)
The slap hurt very little compared to seeing her cry. Did she think she was saving him the whole time?

"I don't care what you've seen Betsy. I just can't stand thinking about what we've done, what you're still doing. How can you stand being used like this? There are other ways, better ways, to change the world." He had calmed down a bit, maybe he could still reach her. Convince her to come back and leave that life behind her. "I don't want to lose you to that life."

Re: Ultimate X-Men (530) The Breakup (One Shot)
"You keep saying I'm being used! I'm not Nathan! For the first time in my whole bleeding life I'm not. It was my idea to infiltrate Xavier's school! When I saw what Nitro could do it was my idea to free him. For once in my life I'm not doing what everyone else expects. I'm doing what I want." she looked at him, he'd calmed down. Maybe she could make him see just how much the Brotherhood meant to her.
"You don't understand the humans. You don't understand what it means to be a mutant in their world. Soon as your power manifested Xavier came and swooped you up. But I hear the thoughts of the humans that see you. Even while you're playing hero and saving their bloody lives they hate you, they fear you. And your mutation isn't even that bad. Think about Kurt! Do you think he could go into the mall in a tank top and shorts without being killed? These humans will never trust you, never think you their equal. They will see your power, that beautiful flame you use to save lives and create wondrous works of art, and they'll kill you for it." just thinking about it made her sick to her stomach. Those poor mutants in Texas came to her mind again.
"I won't lose you to that life. A life of living in fear that one day a mob will come for your blood. All the while you telling me "These fools, they know not what they do" like you're some damn martyr from the Bible." she held her hand out to him, praying he'd take it.
"Tell me a better way love, tell me away I can stop humanity from locking us away, from murdering us in camps? Promise me Xavier's plan can stop that from happening. Tell me how he plans to shut down the Mutant Registration Act! Tell me how he plans to stop the development of anti-mutant technologies! Tell me how long we must suffer these atrocities before his peaceful resistance wins out! Because I just can't sit here while my Brothers and Sisters are rounded up and shot by simple minded bigots."

"So you'll kill everyone who gets in your way? A little old testament for a supposedly evolved species. You'll become greater than them by imitating them at their worst? I may be a mutant, but you're a monster." The words came out cold and harsh. It was like every pent up feeling he had for the last few months was brewing together, mixing, pressing to the forefront of his mind. He wasn't sure he liked where it was leading him. But it was happening whether he wanted it to or not, like a force of nature.

Gemma saw the exchange going on between Nathan and this weird purple haired skank. Must be the girl who'd just dumped him. Tonight was supposed to be about having fun right? So Gemma decided she'd have herself a little.
She walked up from behind Nathan, slid her hands down the front of his pants from behind and set her head on his shoulders. She kissed the side of his face, turned and looked at the skank.
"Hey baby, who's Marry Poppins over here? It's getting cold, come back n' give me some sugar." she bit on his neck seductivley, taunting the other woman.

Betsy stumbled at the sight. Everything she and Nathan had just said to one another no longer mattered. Had.. had he really moved on with some tattooed harlot?
"Nathan... who's that... and what are her hands doing down your pants?" she asked, a rage building inside her that would have made her brother Brian flinch. And he could bench press a tank.

He wasn't sure if he or Betsy was more surprised. He would have hit Gemma if she didn't have her hands in such a delicate place. He pulled her arm free and turned to her.

"Not now Gem, grown-ups are talking." Then the storm inside him knew what it wanted, to hurt Betsy, and it knew how it was going to. He pulled her into a deep kiss. He could see neither of them was suspecting that. It felt so wrong to do this to Betsy, but he needed to. He needed her to hate him. If she could hate him, then she'd be Ok.

"You always forget I can read your bloody mind Nathan! You inconsiderate arse!" a wave of telekinetic force shot out from her, smashing the two X-Men over.
"You want to hurt me! You want to make me hate you? Well I can't!" suddenly her Katana was in her hands.

"You patchy... did she get in tune with sailor moon just now? Cuz that cartoon makes me think some pretty wrong things." Gemma couldn't help but giggle at her own comment.
"You know what baby girl? I rocked his world so hard last night, something like this," at her call the earth begins to tremor underneath Psylocke, who loses her footing and falls on her rear in a heap.

One good thing about having fallen so many times is that he knew how to get up quickly. Nathan put himself between the girls. Nothing good was going to come from this cat fight. He brought the flames out, close enough to each of them that they could feel the heat radiating.

"That's enough from you two!" He looked from one girl to the other, seeing which would make the next move.

He waited for Gemma to be gone before turning back to Betsy. He let the flames die, he was beginning to regain some composure.

"If you've got anything else to say Betsy then now is the time. Otherwise you can got back to Ahab and see how many people are willing to die for his madness."

"I.... I'm sorry that I love you. I'm sorry I ever met you. Next time we meet, it will be as enemies. I hope... I hope you can live with that, because it was your choice." she turned, sparing one last look at the love of her life, a tear running down her face. Then she was gone.

He held his breath and didn't exhale until she was out of sight. If the guys were here they'd probably give him high fives and celebrate. He was glad they weren't. He rested his head against a tree for a few minutes to take it all in. It was over, for real, forever. They had finally had the fight. Nathan felt numb. He took a few deep breaths and started back for the guys. Gemma was waiting by the fence. It was bad enough she had gotten herself involved, did she have to go as far as making herself a target for Betsy's aggression? She looked like she had something clever to say, Nathan cut her off.

"As much as I like being groped if you ever do anything like that again I'll burn your perky tits off."

Gemma couldn't help but grin at patches tough guy routine. It's basic pokemon logic that ground beats fire. She put a hand on his shoulder.
"Hey, Nate look... you she must have really thought you were special if she was afraid you'd get more than a pity fuck from me with your patchwork having ass. I'm sorry man. You wanna get out of here and like.. tag some shit? I stole some booze." she kinda felt bad for the guy. None of his friends got him at all.
