Starting skill slots
  • As per The Window, skills are described by how competent your character is at it. See http://www.mimgames.com/window/rules/competency.html for more details.
  • Your character's age will determine their available skill slots.
  • Further skill slots may be added - at GM's discretion.
  • These differences are meant to represent experience earned through years of working, studying, etc.

Which skills to choose?
Skill lists from other games might give you some ideas.

The skill descriptions on the following pages will give you a sense of how the skill may be used, but these skill descriptions are just a guide.

Advancing your character in-game
Otherwise known as Levelling Up.

The character advancement mechanic I am using is inextricably linked with Arcs.
quote:
An arc is storyline, a questline, a job, a task, a mission... need I go on?

As your character completes an arc, they earn 'x' story points. (Different arcs have different story point values.) When your character earns the required number of points, they earn a Badge. The required number of points is determined by your character's current badge count.

You need five points to earn your first badge. Then for every badge you earn, you need +3 story points. ie, 1 badge needs 8 points, 5 badges needs 20 points. (Note: This rule is subject to change as the game evolves. I invite player input on this rule as the game progresses. Please PM me to discuss.)

quote:
The number of badges you have, is somewhat equivalent to your character's level.

Upon earning a badge, you will gain a character perk. The perk will be relevant to the Stream of which your shiny new badge belongs.

quote:
A stream is much like a genre, category, group, style...

For example, at time of writing there are four streams in which arcs may belong: Horror, Realism, Combat and Management.

For more information about arcs, badges and streams - see the Arcs, Badges and Streams thread: link to a message in this game
