Having eased himself a little into the chair, he tried for a moment to imagine that this was just another routine flight, maybe to London for talks, maybe to California for a meditation retreat, or maybe to more exotic locales around the world - the Amazon, the deserts of Egypt, Asia. But finally the moment was about to arrive of which he tried to push away the reality. Very soon he was going to be leaving old Planet Earth, and presuming that he'd got all his calculations correct, they should be safely arriving in Mars as planned...
He tried to relax a little, close his eyes and think nice thoughts of flowers and fields and water bubbling along in a stream, when suddenly he was broken out of his lone meditation by the sudden ejaculative greeting from the row in front.
The bulky hand reached up and over the seat. Obviously the man hadn't seen the seatbelt sign.. that is if there was any. Malcolm had found himself kind of daydreaming. Pushing his own feelings of comfort and peace aside, he reached out to meet the man's greeting.
"Malcolm Frakes, glad to meet up with you. Archaelogist, at your service." He could have almost sounded a little personable, comparatively at least to Ken, but he too was really not a man of many words either.

With a grin on his face, he extended his hand to each of them in turn. "Ryan Arredondo. I'm one of the programmers with IT here. It's nice to meet you both, gentlemen." Ryan was a bit more accustomed to meeting new people and speaking with strangers, so introducing himself to two men with whom he would be working, even loosely, was completely comfortable for him.

"Arredondo. Frakes." she nodded, obviously having overhead them. "Sorry, didn't catch yours?" she politely goaded Garrens into revealing his name once more.
"I'm Claire Kirch. Field geologist. And this here," she turned to reveal a shorter woman behind her, who appeared one short step away from panic, "this is Sam Gellar."

She nodded shyly at the three men, and feeling their eyes upon her face quickly took her seat and looked forward to the large screen.

OOC - I will grant each of you an extra nugget of info, not currently in the Codex. Please PM me to arrange. In your PM you need to elect a particular course of training, relevant to your character's type (mechanic, scientist, programmer), where you had heard a rumour/nugget of info.
I want you to be a part of developing this new world, and it's technologies. So be creative. Were you being trained in a particular operating system used for holographic-style entertainment? Or perhaps how to build a very particular type of engine for a specific use? Or maybe you were studying something unique?
What you choose here may be considered your initial 'specialty'.
Once you've PM'd me your specialty training, I'll deliver you some info and then you may post here.

Loose lips sink ships after all. And in spite of what many may say about Sirena, Malcolm certainly did respect her highly for her perspectives and innovative applications of knowledge. He wasn't about to spoil the friendship.
"Well, it was certainly interesting enough studying the theoretical implications of earth's sciences on the potential of life and civilisation on our red neighbor. It will be interesting to see how it all flies when the rubber hits the road, or the red as the case may be."

See, I've heard a few different pieces of... information: Apparently once we take off we'll be seen as criminals in the eyes of the international courts because Davos Ghor is hiding Nolan from the US and Chinese governments! Good thing we're not coming back to Earth!" she snorted a staccato laugh.

Malcolm toyed with the idea of what Claire would look like if she were really mad. He kind of liked the look of her poutiness in spite of obviously maintaining an overall professional stance. He knew that his closed-lippedness would not be that satisfying to her.
"Well, you know, all I can say is I've never been one to mix business with personal matters. And to hell with the governments of this world. They've obviously done a pretty poor job over all."

Kinda hard to keep personal and professional separate in that kinda setting, isn't it?" Ryan thought back to some of the behaviors he had noticed between members of the team already, harmless glances or flirtatious comments. There had even been a rumor or two about certain higher ups in the group, though he would refrain from bringing that up for now.

They'll run some clinical examinations to make sure you're ... suited to one another. O'course, word is there's a plethora of... technologies... being designed to give people the freedom to... suit themselves." she'd said with an air of seriousness.
Clearly, the question of 'how do sexual relations within a finite group of people work?' was not new to her. She had raised an interesting point.
The Head Psych had asked people to keep their carnal activities in check. Everyone sat through the "it'll only be us where we're going, and nobody wants to live with a city full of angry ex's" speech during their pre-launch training - the subtext 'sort yourselves out until we land' was loud and clear.

Davos Ghor
NPC, 1 post Wed 24 Jul 2013 at 12:05 | Re: IC CoA | Launch sequence initiatedIn the centre column a video feed had loaded. A shot of the head and shoulders of Davos Ghor, with a straight face. He was facing to his lower left, a blue glow lighting his face in a relatively dark room.
He smiled. Then looked down the barrel of the camera.
"Good morning, zǎo ān, bonjour, buenos días." his voice was velvety smooth. The sub woofers rumbled at the fullness of his natural vocal range.
"On behalf of Captain Zamira Harley, Professor Sirena Moor and Edward Nolan: it is my great honour to welcome you all aboard The Hub." his eyes exuded confident strength.
"Our imminent journey through the heavens, a feat unparalleled in the history of our race, means more to our people than they could ever know. Each of you have made immense sacrifices to be here: and let me assure you it has not been in vain."
Text continued to scroll in the left column.
"We strive to create a new society that is free of poverty, politics and war. We strive to unlock the secrets of the Universe so that all may benefit. We strive to set the benchmark for which all of humanity should be measured. We lead by example."
The intensity in Ghor's eyes seemed to penetrate the audience's individual and collective soul. He exhaled a lengthy, controlled breath.
"May I introduce Professor Sirena Moor." he glanced down and punched a command into his console. The 2nd video feed came to life on the big screen.

Prof. Sirena Moor
NPC, 1 post Wed 24 Jul 2013 at 12:27 | Re: IC CoA | Launch sequence initiatedA similar shot appeared - the head and shoulders of Sirena Moor. Her eyes were locked on the camera. Her thin black hair was tied back in a bun, though a wisp from her fringe was tucked behind her ear. An immaculate white oriental collar obscured much of her neck.
"Hello. Let me start by giving each of you my sincere gratitude for making the decision to be a part of the Children of Ares." she said, clearly from the depth of her heart.
"You are Earth's champions. Intelligent, humane and generous. This vessel holds the last hope for our race. Governments, warmongers, capitalists and industrialists are killing our people, and destroying our home planet." a single tear rolled down her cheek, yet her voice remained steadfast.
"Our natural world is dying." she barely whispered, then swallowed.
"We must save humanity from itself." she concluded.

GM, 151 posts Tue 30 Jul 2013 at 05:55 | Re: IC CoA | Launch sequence initiatedTake off was a very curious experience for most of the crew. While it was much akin to the takeoff of a private jet, or doing 0 - 100km/h in under 8 seconds in a custom Japanese import - the G-forces exerted on the body were of a much larger magnitude. Whilst the design of The Hub had been optimised to minimise these common, and other rarer, effects of space travel - it did not prevent some of the more susceptible crew members passing out in their chairs.
For those who kept their eyes on the screen, various external camera feeds circulated through the quartered display. Simply, it was a fucking spectacular sight: watching the ship reach outer space from the perspective of a hundred flies on the ship's hull, looking out across the lands, oceans and horizons of Earth.
About half an hour after takeoff, the screen resolved to one camera feed. That of the Earth, in her full glory, careening through space. An epic hurricane over the northern hemisphere was visible, as was the Moon as it hung magically on the far side of the blue planet.
"Launch sequence completed." noted the calm woman, breaking the awed silence of the packed cinema.

NPC, 2 posts Flight Captain of The Hub Tue 30 Jul 2013 at 11:10 | Re: IC CoA | Launch sequence initiatedA small video feed appeared in the lower right corner of the screen. A strong woman wearing an advanced piece of head-tech. Her smile was massive, and she was clearly brimming with adrenalin.
"Captain to all crew: we are now en route to Mars. Please commence the Migration Schedule. End of instruction." she said with full cheeks and a few beads of sweat glistening on her forehead.
The feed minimised. As Earth spun beneath them, various lines of data filled the edges of the display, clearly readings and measurements of The Hub's core systems and their present journey status.

GM, 153 posts Tue 30 Jul 2013 at 12:09 | Re: IC CoA | Launch sequence initiated"Migration Schedule" was the phrase given to the active duties and roster for the duration of the journey.
// some months had passed since launch...
The crew had settled into their routines, for the most part. A handful had required some assistance early on with mental health issues. Though this was expected and there was a healthy provision of counsellors available.
Crew who didn't have a job directly involved with the operation of The Hub's interstellar flight spent most of their active duties honing their skills which would come into play upon arrival at their new home.
Occasionally there was need for odd-jobs to be carried out, and some flight crew would put the call out for assistance with various projects using the CoA Job Board. Simply an online bulletin board for ad-hoc work available across the ship. This kept things interesting and gave people the opportunity to try something new, or learn about aspects of other team's duties.
The Hub's research and development faculties were abuzz with activity. As the project's pivotal industry, nearly every technical division had at least a small project management team that reported into R&D: thus utilising operators, technicians and mechanics to conduct practical testing and assessments of technological inventions and upgrades. As the months passed and arrival on the red planet grew closer, the divide between 'brains' and 'brawn' drastically reduced as cooperation increased. The once common cultural segregation, taken as an Earthen legacy, of academics versus the blue collar workers, soon became a thing of the past as their new envionment clearly illustrated their immediate reliance upon each other. A win on the path towards redefining human society.
Overall, life on The Hub had been going smoothly. Maybe Ghor, Moor and Nolan had truly selected an exceptionally cohesive crew... or perhaps it was just the honeymoon period... whichever it was, it had been clear that everyone was on the same team and soon we would face our greatest challenge yet: settling into life on Mars.
