[FIELDSET="Tomas Geldtree aka Salt"]

[IMGR]https://i.pinimg.com/170x/82/c...al-fantasy.jpg[/IMGR]

"Yeah, I got an idea." Salt said from the doorway. He had arrived just in time to catch the presentation."The city is flooded with people. Traffic is terrible. We got people moving in and out of the streets and the churches. Knowledge clerics are out sniffing around every corner to find a clue. Tons of slummies saw the explosion and are trying to swarm into the inner city. City Watch is going crazy." Salt walked to the bar and spoke to the bartender in a low voice. "Whiskey. Neat."

Salt paused to light his pipe as he waited for his drink. He blew out a large cloud of smoke before continuing. "So Yeah, it's a good idea to get some flatfoots of your own out there talking to the right people and asking the right questions before the whole case turns into a muddy mess that nobody can figure out. The first question you gotta ask is, Who could have such power? And that's kinda a knowledge thing, so I am glad you brought me down here."

The drink was smooth, so Salt let it all slide down into his soul. Considering what had come before, it was a welcome bracer with which to face the future. Salt motioned the bartender for another drink. This one he quietly nursed while he listened to the others, chainsmoking all the while.

When Elrohir decided to prank him by pinching his bottom, Salt lowly grumbled. "That's right. Always on my ass." It wasn't much longer from there that he decided that he should rejoin the conversation.

"Whiskey's good. Your manners are better, Seeker."

Salt moved from the bar to the elaborate box. He reached in and removed one badge, one writ of authorization, and one pile of coins. This might have been the most platinum that he had ever owned. He carefully tucked each item into an appropriate pocket.

"Name's Tomas Geldtree." He said as an introduction to the others. "Or you can call me Salt. It's a name that I earned from the slummies, and it has caught on more and more over the years. I find people, kinda like Kytaran, but they aren't in serious trouble. If they are, I try to help them out of it. I talk to people. You'd be surprised the type of information folks are willing to share once they feel comfortable. I help people. They have sure helped me out enough times."

Salt gave a grin to Elrohir at the last statement. The elf had been mentor, colleague, and friend over the years. It was Elrohir who helped turn Tomas into a proper investigator.

[B]"That's my side job. That and working for Guild Doors. Sometimes they intersect. My day job is as a cleric for the Knowing Mistress."

He rubbed away imaginary sweat from his bald head while he waited for his words to sink in with the others. "As to where I fit in the investigation, I probably should be one of those who talks to the families of the three missing persons. I might be able to help set them at ease. But first, I wanna check for there bodies at the incident sight. I have an item that could help locate their presence. Plus, I think I might be able to help with that Clasp meeting. But I would need some way to see in the dark."

Enough talking. Salt took a pin from the folds of his robe and used it to light his pipe before returning it to his garments. He then stepped back in a cloud of smoke.

[FIELDSET="Tears Like Sin"]

[IMGR]https://imgur.com/AWyFsQ1.jpg[/IMGR]

Rain fell down upon the city like tears. And like the city's sins, not easily wiped away.

This ain't no joyride through town to meet one of the most powerful men in the city. This is a look in the darkness to find something even darker hiding in the shadows.

Ironically, this time Tomas wasn't entering one of the city's slums. This time, he was heading toward one of the most prestigious sites in all of Emon. A reminder that corruption came in all forms and made its way into all places.

Given the nature of the location, Tomas had no need to arrive in the bedraggled robes of some deferential priest. So before arriving at the scene of the crime, the man more commonly known as Salt took the time to remove his robes so that his more impressive looking armor was what caught people's attention. After doing so, Salt walked into the site of the burning Lyceum as a man of authority.

Trying to describe the image would likely cause one to choke on something more astringent than the smoke and ash that still permeated the air, so Salt didn't even try. Instead he tried fill himself with all the knowledge that the scene could offer.

The others were expectedly first looking for tangible evidence, oddly enough except for the seemingly least empathetic of them, Kytaran. The elf, in the glamour of his human disguise, was speaking with the traumatized head master.

Salt chose to pursue the more personal angle himself by speaking to the police officers who were already investigating the area as well as keeping it cordoned off from busybodies. Salt looked for the officers of higher rank and began to speak with them about what they may have discovered, presenting himself in the manner of a colleague. He presented his credentials from Seeker Assum only when needed, quickly tucking them back away to be as discreet as possible.

After speaking with a few of the officers, Salt was called over by Elrohir to collaborate on some ideas. Some of the others joined in on the speculation and sharing of information.

Finally, Salt removed a large magnifying glass that Elrohir was sure to recognize. The Hound's Hand Glass, as it was called, allowed the cleric to investigate a location with the same benefits of a True Seeing spell, revealing items hidden by magic and even allowing sight into the Ethereal realm. It was this item that he hoped would help reveal the bodies of the missing persons and perhaps even the missing head of Planerider Ryn.

[FIELDSET="A Purple Light Through The Darkness"]

[IMGR]https://imgur.com/AWyFsQ1.jpg[/IMGR]

Salt made sure to give each of the officers that he had spoken with a word of commendation and encouragement. They had earned that much and more by their diligence. Once things had settled, he would make sure to treat them to some strong drinks. And if he couldn't get enough of them in a tavern to help lubricate their souls, Salt could send a keg or six of the finest ale he could find to their headquarters.

Once Salt was finished questioning the watchmen, he turned his skills in observing other people to his fellow investigators. Watching and listening to them could provide nearly as many answers on a matter as if he had taken direct action himself. And there was no need to clutter the examination by getting under the feet of his colleagues, trying to do what they were already doing.

For example, Lady Sorrel, with her honeyed voice and hypnotic mannerisms had both managed to soothe the headmaster and put forth a most pointed question about the absence of Allura Vysoren.

Salt's attention was not drawn from the headmaster's words so much as driven away by a piercing purple light of obvious mystical origins. As he turned to look at the source, he found that it was Valdur's hammer. The dwarf was standing at the edge of the crater that was the epicenter of the explosion, and he had revealed a skeleton with powerful enchantments.

"By the Tree of Wisdom, Valdur! You have uncovered the most important clue yet! Preserve it at all costs! Well, not to the cost of your existence." Luckily the dwarf, while bedazzled by the etheric light, had received no greater harm. Ashele had kept him from toppling into the crater, and Zhon had ministered to Valdur's health quite thoroughly. This left Salt to be able to move in and examine the skeleton directly.

Silvana was close by as Salt was investigating, and in addition to the runes magically etched into the bones, Silvana revealed that instead of marrow, the inner parts of the bones were a crystalline green substance. That information was relayed to the others as they gathered to investigate and speculate on the nature of the skeleton.

Elrohir specifically gathered them in to consult on the current findings. The master investigator walked them through the path of the bomber, revealing that the man left burning footprints in his wake.

Valdur, coming out of his daze, informed them that along with the purple light came a vision to the dwarf that he wished to discuss with them later. Valdur also informed them that the skeleton itself was stone.

“Do you think this is the killer? A constructed human fireball?” Zhon voiced what most, if not all of the investigators must be thinking.

“Yes. Construct or transformation?  A human enchanted like that or a construct built to mimic a human with a deadly surprise inside?” Salt couldn't decide which one seemed most likely to be the case.

The discovery of the skeleton brought new energy to the investigation, and the task force members began to talk amongst each other and investigate new avenues in earnest.

Elrohir suggested moving the skeleton to GDI for protection and to have full access to investigate it further. This led to a debate with some who thought the item too dangerous to move at the moment and that it was best left where it lie.

Zhon proved in favor of moving it and had grabbed some blankets to help transport the skeleton without actually touching it directly. Salt gave him a nod in favor. "Good idea. I will help you move it in this method when we are ready."

Salt turned to the others. "We gotta take it. Whoever did this could come to take it away. Then we would lose our biggest lead. It needs to be under full time guard, and that can be done better at GDI than here. We might even need to hire some muscle to watch over it while we are out digging around."

Salt moved next to Elrohir. "Maybe we should get some kind of special transport to take it to the office. Something to well hide what it is. We might want to make arrangements to transport the task force members back and forth to GDI in obscurity."

To the others, Salt asked. "Waddaya think? Should we hire carriages or something to protect our identities while moving about the city?"

Before anyone was ready to leave, Silvana shared her discovery about the exotic graffiti on the western side of the Lyceum. Salt followed along to have a look with his hand glass. It was no ordinary scrawl, that was for certain.

Afterwards, Salt listened as the headmaster was again questioned. This time more thoroughly. From there the group would make their way to GDI to collaborate, and Salt was eager for the discussion. "I have something that I want to share with everyone, but I'm not gonna do it here."

[FIELDSET="Follow My Leads"]

[IMGR]https://imgur.com/AWyFsQ1.jpg[/IMGR]

Salt new that the movements that he had in mind would take some time and make him travel through half of the city, but it didn't make sense to do them in an order that would be quicker. He wanted to make some purchases, and the quickest way to do that would be to travel directly from the Erudite district over to the adjoining district to the northeast, Abdar's Promenade.

The Promenade being the name of Emon's merchant district with everything from an open bazaar of tents and stalls to full shops of every manner and stripe. If Salt made his purchases first, he would have to carry them all the way to the Temple district and back again. And he really wanted to conduct his business in the city's worship area before the sun went down.

This meant leaving the Erudite district, traveling through the residential areas known as the Central district to get to the Temple district. From there, Salt could take the shorter route through the Military district to get back to the bazaar. Once his shopping was complete, Salt could take a shortcut through the illustrious Cloudtop district to get back to Guild Doors Incorporated.

Alright, maybe that took him through more than half the city. Salt could always just have his purchases delivered to GDI, his office and part time home, but traversing through the city as he had planned would provide a harder path for him to be followed or observed by those whose attention the task force hoped to elude.

Salt didn't mind taking this roundabout path. It was easy enough to catch a ride with a passing carter, or even on the wagon of a small merchant. Salt almost absently rubbed the gold, blue, and purple holy symbol of an open eye that hung from his neck. Most folks in Emon were happy to help out a cleric of the Knowing Mistress. As expected, they viewed the goddess as a mystery, and wanted to take steps to maintain her favor and not incite her ire.

It had taken a longer bit of walking than Salt expected and not one friendly wagon ride but two to get to the Temple district. Once there, Salt did not head to the Temple of the Knowing Mistress as was his habit. Instead he took a moment to orient himself, and then made his way on foot through several twisting streets until he arrived at his destination, The Golden Temple of Palor, God of the sun.

It was this figure that Salt had seen on the magical graffiti, or a variation of Palor maybe. An older depiction. Salt really shouldn't have slept so much in the classes regarding other gods besides his own. To remedy his lack of knowledge, Salt intended to quietly question a few of Palor's own priests about the image.

Once his business at the temple was done, Salt made his way to the city bazaar. Like his earlier excursion, it took him longer than he had anticipated. Mainly due to several people stopping him to have a word or two with about this subject or that. Honored of the Mistress, should I plant sweet potatoes this season? Honored of the Mistress, will I win my court case? Honored of the Mistress, is my son back to laying about in the taverns again?

After arriving at the markets and making inquiries at several stalls, Salt was finally directed to a tent of many colored patterns seen together. Stepping inside, he asked of the merchants folding teams of cloth. "I would like to purchase clothing for gentleman of various occupations and social status. All about roughly my size. Wadaya got?"

Salt was not only happy with the wide selection of items that they offered him, but the price as well. Quickly calculating the total in his head, it came to 37 gold pieces even.

"Tell ya what, I'll take it all."

Salt reached into one of the pouches at his belt and removed 40 gold pieces. He wasn't ready to go around advertising that he had platinum, especially not in the quantity he was packing. He handed all 40 pieces of gold over to the merchants. These guys had always been good to him and he wanted to keep the relationship that way.

"Here ya go. And there's a little something extra there for each of you."

Business all done, Salt trudged his way back to GDI, not bothering to try and catch a wagon ride. He could make it through the Cloudtop district back to the Central district quick enough, thanks to his shortcut.

When he had gotten back to headquarters, he dumped all the new stuff in his room. Next he grabbed a bowl of stew and a large chunk of bread and found out where the others had gathered.

Mouth full, Salt grinned to Elrohir. Swallowing, he spoke. "Thanks for dinner. It might be a good idea to keep something handy to feed this group of flatfoots. While they are all out trying to top each other as greatest detective, they might forget to eat. I will put a few platinums in the strong box to help cover the costs. I can grab breakfast in the morning too for those who don't eat before the meeting. What are we talking about?"

Kytaran had bounded out of the taxi and was on the chase before Salt could even get the carriage door. Still, Salt was a huntsman, if of a different stripe, and he was quickly in pursuit of the quarry himself.

The creature had obviously already sustained some wounds, likely from Ashele who was attempting to finish the job. That honor fell to Kytaran however as the mage used the magic in his blade to fell the creature.

Catching up, Salt arrived in time to hear about the dead mages in the upper slums, and Kytaran suggest that the priest team up with Silvana to follow up on that lead.

"I would be happen to..." Salt began but halted as Silvana had some heated words to say before announcing that she was following up on a different lead instead.

"Another Joe, left at the altar." Salt cracked before moving to take a look at Ash's wounds. "Here, let me heal those before you bail out too." Touching the holy symbol of the Knowing Mistress, that mysterious looking eye, Salt began to channel divine energy over the elf's wounds.

"There. That oughta do it. No charge for first time customers." Salt looked around determining his location. "I'll go snoop around about those dead mages then leave in time to make the Clasp meeting tonight."

Salt realized that he had forgotten his near beggar like robes for investigating in the slums, but he shrugged his shoulders as he walked away. It wouldn't be the first time. Some would still recognize him and others would recognize the holy symbol. It shouldn't take him too long to get information.

Salt listened to the sinister voice that had been called back. There was no arguing that the members of this cult had anything other than nefarious intentions.

Salt wasn't sure that he agreed with Kytaran's assessment about killing people as a ritual sacrifice, but he nodded along at the rest of the elf's words.

"I do have a Zone of Truth spell that I can use if we get in a spot to whip it out." The cleric said mildly. He didn't say anything else as he was busy listening intently to Lady Sorrel's description of the spell she had used to speak to the cadaver. This was new knowledge and he didn't want to miss it.

Then the enigmatic seamstress flashed Salt one of those dazzling smiles that could make a guy start acting like a mook. Salt blinked his eyes quickly and tried to maintain his composure. Out of habit or nervousness, even he wasn't sure which, he lit up a smoke.

After a couple of draws, Salt began to rack his brain for anything he had learned about the Betrayer or any of the other day exiled gods. It might have been a history lesson rather than a theology lesson. He began to talk again to help get the wheels of his mind turning.

"The dead girl did hold herself in high esteem. So she did either hold a position of regard, or thought that she should hold one. The common factor that would bring both the lowly and the lofty together is power. That is the usual driving force of most cults anyway. But her language was certainly dark and malicious."
