Nick wasn’t supposed to do it, but one of the perks of living in an apartment over a bar was the ability to sneak downstairs after closing and snag a cold beer. He liked to think it was covered in the rent. And if not, he had lost enough money in the poker machine on a regular enough basis to accountant for it in that way. Nick didn’t really feel like digging around for like slice, or worse yet, slicing fresh limes himself, so Corona was out.
It was always easier to grab a can of beer instead of a bottle anyway. So Nick reached into the cooler and pulled out a cold can of Bud Light. As he turned back around, Nick saw movement out of the corner of his eye. It was Julianne, one of the waitresses. She must have had to stay past lockup for some reason and was now heading out the side door to her car.
Nick wasn’t normally one for pranks, but Julianne had nailed him with one last week involving a faulty beer tap, so he owed her one. Slipping around the corner, Nick tried to catch her as she unlocked the side door to go out.
“Boo!” Nick called out enthusiastically as he pounced next to her. She didn’t even flinch. “Boo!” Nick said louder as he waved his arms to get her attention. Julianne simply opened the door , walked out, and locked up behind herself without noticing Nick at all.
Nick had reached out to grab the door as Julianne pulled it closed, but his hand went right through the wooden door. Startled, Nick lost his balance and fell right through the now closed door. He landed on the ground on the parking lot, but he couldn’t feel the ground beneath him. Nick tried to get up, but instead of just standing, he saw himself floating about two inches above the ground.
What the hell was going on?
