[FIELDSET=Game Name]The Many Intrigues of Verona[/FIELDSET][FIELDSET=Game System]DnD 3.5e[/FIELDSET][FIELDSET=Theme]You never really know someone.[/FIELDSET][FIELDSET=Flavour]Intrigue, murder, drama, scandal & mystery in high society. Renaissance period Italy vibes.[/FIELDSET][FIELDSET=Plot Summary]"...In fair Verona, where we lay our scene
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean..." - Romeo and Juliet

Verona has always known conflict and darkness despite its light and picturesque appearance. The noble and wealthy come from all over to view the beautiful canals and towering stonework. The city is as famous for its brothels as its stained glass and gilded palazzo. Don't let the beauty on the outside fool you friend, this city is rotten. The church is corrupt, the nobility and royals abuse their power over those that serve them and rivalries often turn out murderous. Yes, friends, Verona is a wicked place to be sure. There are rumored cults to dark powers, multiple guilds of thieves and assassins, plus, don't forget the church. They'll absolve all your sins if you have the gold. The city guard is owned by merchant houses that double as criminal enterprises. Law and order comes to those that can afford it, and even then, you anger the wrong person and your body will be fished from the canals.

But, if you can stomach all that ugly, the sights and senses of Verona will reward you with pleasure and entertainment beyond anywhere else in the realm. Tread carefully though, ambition is oft rewarded with a dagger's smile and poison makes for poor refreshment. Keep your wits about you friend, for this is Verona and her heart is stone.

In this game, social prowess and manipulation will serve you as well as any blade or spell. Each character will be level 5 but the first 4 levels will be from npc classes and the final level from a player class. You'll need to go deep into your creative well to craft a three dimensional character ready for the risks and rewards of Verona. Your background, social status, and ambitions will be very important. There will be opportunities at every corner to rise or fall in this world of intrigue. Should you die, your progress ends and you'll have to start over with a fresh character. Party mechanics won't be as important in this game. You aren't noble adventurers or heroes, but people with flaws and skills. You won't be helpless, but you aren't champions or paragons of perfection either. It's about the interactions and relationships you build that matter. The webs you spin or fall into will make or break you. I don't advise you to make enemies of each other, but if it fits into where the story goes, don't hold back. Alliances are crucial to your survival. Nobody survives this game alone and npc groups will only get you so far. The best advice is have fun and go wild.

Verona is the capital of a self-governing province. There are rival provinces and cities that will come up. While there is no emperor or king, the major church has more power than any emperor. The church has a large army, is well funded, and their inquisitors are infamous. The political leader of Verona is the Doge, Francesco Muscari and he is as rotten as the city. His children are awful and the only redeeming person in his entire family is a niece named Marina Muscari who by all accounts is a gentle soul that cares for the ill and poor. The council of 7 is the other power within the city and they represent the 7 most powerful families in the city. These are merchant families that also deal in other enterprises. You'll learn all about the council. The church has the authority to overrule the doge and the council, but rarely does. The church leaders at the cathedral are often arrogant, corrupt, and wicked men, but the highest ranked member of the clergy is apathetic. He is willing to ignore the more carnal transgressions, but will not shy away from violent sins or sins against the church.

[FIELDSET="Character Creation"]
- ECL: 5 (4 levels of an npc class and 1 level of a player class)
- Any races or classes beyond core must go through me first. No ToB though.
- Gold will depend on your background and status.
- I like frequent posting, but only if you can.
- Combat will be rare unless it really fits your character, so 20/80 mostly.
- Application end date: June 20th, 2020
- Alignment: This game is very gray, so your actions determine alignment rather than holding to one.
- Rolling a natural 20 in combat is pretty much insta-death. For you or enemies. This is situational and will be determined based on confirmed critical hits as well as source of damage. Natural 20 butter knife not likely to kill, but pistol behind the door trap, that may kill. Quick healing or first aid would affect the outcome. Also, hp total at the time. Stakes are higher, but don't be spooked that a 20 means you're dead. More goes into it than a number.
- There are black powder weapons.
- I will allow for an arcane adept npc class to go with the adept. It will function like a sorcerer.
- Looking for 5 players.
- Abilities: 30 point buy
- I'll be describing the layout of the city over the next few days to give a good mental picture. Look into renaissance Verona, Mantua, and Venice for ideas.

Verona

[FIELDSET="Application"]

[url=https://postimages.org/][img]h...170-E.jpg[/img][/url]

- Name: Fausto Contarini, Commendatore
- Age: 25
- Race: Half Elven
- Classes: Arisocrat 4 / Rogue 1
- Physical Traits: Standing at 5’8” weighing in at 140 pounds, it is easy to see that there is Elven blood in Fausto’s mix. His pale skin attests to the matter as well contrasting with his black hair and searing blue eyes in an almost eerie way. Fausto dresses as if he were the most fashionable military commander in all of Verona, and perhaps he is just that. He carries himself with an ease of command.
- Personality Traits: Fausto is quietly charming, offering a gentle but warm smile with polite words to all he encounters. In the proper social settings, he is a bit more open and friendly with a good sense of humor. When challenged, he is all steel and lightning.
- Background & Social Status: Fausto is a landed knight who has reached the rank of Commander or Commendatore. His family lands are little more than a farm and orchard with a modest manor house. Not even a keep. Current care of the lands are in the hands of his younger sister, Mariabella.

With little more than a small aristocratic title among a sea of aristocratic titles to support himself, Fausto turned to the merchant houses to begin to regain some semblance of financial stability. The proper clothing and a decent looking sword allowed him to sign on as a caravan guard on the trade route from Verona to Venice. Fausto kept up this work, helping to fight off the occasional bandits, and the armed forces of greedy nobles and rival merchants who used their latest skirmishes to try and pad their pockets.  It was when Fausto received his first pistol that his fortunes began to change. His prowess with the weapon helped determine the outcome of a few battles and he was eventually awarded the title of Commendatore by his knightly order, this being a political move to appease some thankful merchants rather than any true knightly endeavor of excellence shown to the realm.

Now Fausto seeks to use his new station to become more involved in the aristocracy by way of commanding troops in other ventures and investing alongside the merchant families to gain income beyond a guard salary. But Fausto knows that he must be wary, while he may have gained favored in some eyes, he is sure that he has seen the hidden glint of enmity in others.
