[fieldset=Basics]Gender: Male
Alignment: CN
Age: 26

STR 13
I may not be a heavyweight, but I’m no lightweight.
DEX 15
A little nimbleness goes a long way.
CON 11
I can take a punch, but prefer not to do that.
INT 13
I’m not a know-it-all, but I know a lot.
WIS 10
I guess that I don’t always have the best judgement.
CHA 17
I am a fairly likable guy.[/fieldset]

[fieldset=Role in Party] I don’t mind taking the support role. In fact, I like helping others. I am also not afraid to take the lead in areas of my specialties, which run along the intellectual and social veins.
[/fieldset]

[r=2,1][fieldset=Concept][COLOR="DarkRed"]I am your go-to guy![/COLOR]
[/fieldset]

[r=2,1][fieldset=Personality]Traits:
  • Flattery is my preferred trick for getting what I want.
  • Sarcasm and insults are my weapons of choice.

Ideals:
  • Friendship. Material goods come and go. Bonds of friendship last forever.
  • Aspiration. I'm determined to make something of myself.
  • Independence. I am a free spirit--no one tells me what to do.

Bonds:
  • My allegiance belongs only to those who show allegiance to me.

Flaws:
  • I have a weakness for the vices of the city, especially hard drink.
  • I tend to be overly suspicious.

[/fieldset][/table]

About my people: Mountain dwellers are often considered a poor and ignorant people, but many are as hard working and practical as any you are like to meet. A few are down right cunning. I had a better than average upbringing and education was emphasized for my future.

Appearance: Typical height for a half elf. Dark hair, short beard, piercing blue eyes. Clothing and demeanor a bit cavalier.

Personality: I’m not one to begrudge anyone a good time. I will even join in if given half a chance. Life is for the living, as they say. It is not too hard to make friends when you have a friendly turn yourself. But I know that I need to buckle down and take life seriously at times as well. Plus, there is a world of knowledge out there to uncover.

Short Backstory: My parents saved up enough to get me a formal education as an academic. I had plans of working my way up to tutoring some young lords and retiring early. Only the big city was more of a temptation than I expected. If I had spent as much time studying as in the taverns, I might not have gotten drummed out. Now I have to earn my own way so that I don’t end up letting my family down.

Goals/Aspirations:
A smaller town might suit me better. I hear good things about Hearth Crossing. Rumor has it that the town is run by a council of wealthy landowners. Land sounds like a good investment. Maybe I can work my way into this Golden Circle.

Trouble: My reputation as a scholar has flown right out the window. As it is, I am left performing in taverns, inns, and street corners to provide my next meal and possibly a place to sleep. Reputation or no, I still have my knowledge. I just need to find a like-minded group of individuals to put my talents to good use and together we can build a stake for ourselves. And I have to do it all before word gets back to my dear sainted mother.

First Adventure:
It wasn’t the carousing that kept me from my studies. Alright, it was. But it wasn’t JUST the carousing. It was the MAGIC. I had learned to create a phantom hand to do my bidding. And my insults could even cause psychic damage to my enemies. I was hooked. I had to learn more. And if old Riptooth hadn’t betrayed me, I would have learned a lot more. Oh, he could have the woman. If only he hadn’t stolen the spell book.[/fieldset]

Let's flesh out the first adventure a little more. Who is Riptooth? What was the betrayal toward Telar? Who was the woman that he stole?

Wisened Kip was a full on sage, at least, that was the rumor. One thing was for certain, he was a semi-retired bard. That meant that along with being knowledgeable in several other subjects, he was versed in magic. Three of the students tested to have the aptitude for magic. Telar, a lass called Bethany,  and another young man, Gulliver Swick. One of Swick’s front teeth was broken and he had a bad habit of rubbing his tongue across it each time he smiled. Old Riptooth as Telar began to think of him.

Bethany vacillated between Telar and Gulliver, enjoying the attention. Telar soon realized her game and became indifferent toward her. The only problem was that the three of them had been working together to recover a very powerful spell book, one that Kip and his crew had secreted away years before after one of their own adventures went awry. In the midst of the recovery, Old Riptooth hit Telar with a Hideous Laughter spell and he and Bethany escaped with the spell book, never to be seen again.

Kip and his crew had secreted the book in an old militia outpost. The place hadn’t been used for years, but at the time, Kip and friends had spent the night with the guards there. It was a common event for travelers looking for safety in numbers, and the guards enjoyed the company and any news that was brought as well. The crew planned to drop by in a few weeks and collect the spell book.

Except a boundary skirmish happened in that area, delaying their plans. Things escalated when hordes of creatures surged into the area and set up camps. Humans battled monsters and other humans for boundary rights for a long time. Long enough for Kip’s crew to break up and move on.

When the three students made their way to the outlook, there was only a few kobolds left in residence. It as easy enough to slip past them and recover the book from its hiding place near the old jakes. That was, until Riptooth hit Telar with the spell.

Riptooth and Bethany got away, but Telar was taken prisoner by the kobolds. They treated him like a slave for a few days before Telar managed to escape and make his way back to the school. Too late. He had missed his most important tests and was let go from the school.

Holderness, that was the name of the village where Telar caught a ride into Hearth Crossing. It was a charming and quaint little place. Mostly barley farms it seemed, and a few pig farms. Telar was sure that they grew something else during the seasons, and likely had other livestock as well. But what he saw was barley and what he smelled was pigs.
