Super Soldier
His code name was appropriate for this competition, Super Soldier. And that was what he was, since he had been kidnapped and experimented upon by a secret think tank working for the Roxxon company. Even before Steve Rogers was the greatest success in the field, governments had been trying to develop the ultimate warrior. And where governments dared to tread, corporations soon followed.
The other name he used, Eldritch Tailor, wasn’t his original name either. It was simply the name on the ward where he was housed, indicating the template used for the unique combination of energies used to bombard his dna. Ritch stole the name because they had warped his memories so bad that he didn’t even know his own identity.
Ritch needed to win the competition for stronger reasons than the other candidates. He needed the protection that would keep Roxxon from getting their hands on him again. He had managed to allude them this far, but it must only be a matter of time before their paths crossed again. Being sanctioned by the United States government would offer a lot of protection.
So Ritch calmly waited his turn on the course. And when that time came, he gave the run his all. He high jumped, vaulted, flipped, and slid past every part that he could. When it came to the balance beams, he somersaulted through them. Why not? He had the agility to do so, and the momentum added to his speed. Ritch used his momentum to his advantage in every chance he could. On the ropes and low crawls where he couldn’t use that trick, he focused on his breathing instead.
But his primary tactic came during the run itself. He didn’t jog, he didn’t march, he sprinted. Ritch knew that he needed every ounce of speed he could muster. Except on the return rounds where he was not timed. On those he took a full hour to return, regaining his stamina and going over the last run in his head.
On the first run, Ritch made it under the nine minutes required. On the second run, he knocked off a full minute from his original time. On the third run, he knocked off a minute and a half from his original. He would not be able to do it any faster without using his energy conversion to manipulate kinetic energy. A trick Ritch hadn’t learned to do yet. He thought the runs would be enough to get him to the next round of the competition.
