“Inventory everything!” Holt directed the factors as they moved about their assigned sectors. “I want the dust from the sanitation servitors analyzed for chemical composition. Recycle the machine oil from the vats. The debris from the oil can be baked into the adhesives used to repair microscopic hull fissures and other support maintenance protocols.”

Holt thought he heard someone snicker as they shuffled by, but he did not lash out in anger. Let them think whatever the wanted so long as produced the results he wanted. “Profit is not a word around here as much as a divine calling. Every crown that gets added to the pile is going to end up in someone’s pension packet. Work like your life depends on it because at some point, it always does.”

That was enough of the motivational rhetoric. Holt shifted to checking his data feeds. The information that was flowing through the ether-sphere would prove valuable in their entire mission regarding Gelron and the Sink Hole. Materials was drifting through that torus in both directions and for Holt that meant profit both coming and going. He paused to make a note to check with his black market contact and cycled through his audio comm channels to catch the latest mining and shuttle reports.

alphapred:
”The inventory department is back there Sir,” someone informs Holt politely, indicating an area in the back of the vast general office, screened of by the same five foot high wood panelled partitions that divide everything else across the floor.

On approaching Holt is met by Sophy Vandermyde, the head of Inventory and finds thirty desks set out in six neat rows, each with an identical data terminal and an adding machine with a big leaver, less than half the desks are occupied, the people there are beavering away at their keyboards or adding machines while moving papers, one at a time, from stacked in trays to stacked out trays where they are occasionally collected by a boy with a trolly who moves them to the bank of filing cabinets at the rear of the space.

It's very noisy here and Holt has to concentrate to hear Sophy’s explanation of the operation, which is a four-year rolling program, conducting inventories throughout the ship and starting again when they reach the end, there should be fifty people involved in the department but are short staffed at the moment and have only thirty-nine. The have catalogues of some two hundred, million individual items, none more than four years old and are very proud of that fact but are concerned that they will slip behind with so few staff and ‘please could they have some more people’.

“Thank you, Miss Vandermyde.” Holt was eager to see the set up. After all, a continuously rotating inventory system was highly efficient. Holt expected to find enough evidence in the reports to find the details of the embezzlement in a fraction of the time it would take otherwise.

Upon seeing things, his initial enthusiasm waned, but only for a moment. It seemed that no matter how advanced technology became, some of the tried and true measures would still remain the best. After all, the system did not have to be glamorous to continue to provide the results it had previously. Although, that the team was only running at less than 80% capacity was a bit disconcerting. Holt wanted to maximize every aspect that even came within a whiff of being involved with generating profits.

“I will certainly bring our concerns about personnel requirements to the appropriate people.” Holt assured the inventory head. Not the question was, did he bring the matter directly to Vormav or settle to speaking with Uriel Cosh?
