Mission 1: Team WaaaGH!

(OOC: to keep things simple and to get things rolling ASAP, everyone gets the same first mission. Let's see who can flatten the kobolds in the least amount of rounds!)

The welcome to Phlan was nice enough. A short blonde fellow named Rolf guided you through the city. He showed the major points of interest, as well as pointed out that drinking the polluted sludge of the Stojanow river was unhealthy. You made the acquaintance with the guards at the City Hall, as well as the garrison commander.

The latter introduced himself as Boros of the Red Boar. It was difficult to decide whether he was a halforc or a human - but this is not Hillsfar, and capable people are not asked what race they are. His worn scale armor an silver, perfectly polished axe speak volumes about his experience. Boros leads the merry band of soldiers that are von Urslingen's followers. These number about one hundred and fify, mostly infantry with light armor, polearm and shield. There are twenty elite archers and thirty light cavalry as well.

So Boros shows you around your new home.

The barracks are plenty large to house the garruson as well as your merry band. Its basement doubles as storage area and prison. Currently there is only one prisoner - an enormous brute snoring in the corner cell. The guards seem to avoid going near the cell.

Mercenaries' quarters are in the east wing of the barracks. It is a single big dorm, with eight solid bunk beds and appropriate chests. A fireplace on the inside wall is just waiting for a fire and a nice pot bubbling with stew.

But Boros just laughs. "I guess you'd like to rest and relax a bit? There'll be none of that. Get organized and meet me outside in ten minutes for your first assignment. Or you can run away." He harrumphs, turns around and leaves.

The first assignment sounds easy enough. You are shoved through the gate into the slums area, and told to procure half a dozen kobold heads.

"And don't return empty-handed!" Boros yells before the gate to New Phlan slams shut. The alleyway leading from the wall is narrow; the buildings in the slums are just looted and burnt-out husks. Warily, you advance for a minute or two, getting your bearings.

Someone laughs, up ahead. it is an unpleasant, animalistic sound.

"Meat!" a shrill little voice suddenly screams out. "New meat!" Kobolds stream from a house, bradishing their eating utensils. They scream and chitter madly. "Food! Food! FOOD!"

Mission 1: Team WaaaGH!

Abighail tingles with excitement about fighting with her family for the first time.  Suddenly having two big brothers and one big sister looking out for her is strange after spending so many years sleeping with one eye open worried about who was coming to take her things, her honor, or her life.  Now she feels almost invincible as a part of such a powerful family; the whole of Phlan had better beware.

Entering the slums the air is sour and rotten from the unused buildings falling to pieces, but it means that anything living here must be as corrupt as its environment.  Abighail moves forward warily but quickly, wanting to show the others that she can be valuable as a scout, and is thrilled by hearing enemies only a moment later.  She runs around the wall to the north and sees the kobolds coming out of a house.  Kobolds: nature's appetizers.  With zest Abighail sights a largish one down the length of her crossbow and lets fly at it.  The bolt sticks satisfyingly in its right leg and Abighail has the satisfaction of first blood.

Mission 1: Team WaaaGH!

What a whirlwind!  A few months ago she was an orphan languishing alone in a cell on the waterfront of Tantras. In the last ninety days she had become an acolyte of Tempus, found that she had a family and took off with them looking for adventure.

Now here she stood with her brothers and younger sister facing true combat for the first time.  Taking a deep breath and mumbling a prayer to Tempus Ghorza raced forward eager for her first kill.

OOC:  Start in E19 and race forward to E15.  Hit AC 10 for 7 dmg.

Mission 1: Team WaaaGH!

As they were toured around Phlan, Gharuk had a vacant look on his face and clearly wasn't really interested in what Rolf or Boros were saying. By the time they'd reached the barracks, Gharuk was practically champing at the bit to do something and at the mention of going into dangerous territory, with the intention of bringing back heads, the dashing sailor perked up immensely. He was the first of the group to rendezvous outside for their first mission.

Gharuk entered the slums with shield strapped to arm and hand hovering over his weapons, ready and wary for danger. When the hostile chant sprang up, he was not hesitant to loose his lash, whipping it back and forth in anticipation. Upon the first glance at his foe, his mountainous form barreled forward, eager to close with the foe, his whip trailing behind him in his haste. As he ran, spittle gathered around his mouth and a throaty "Rwaaaaargh!" spewed forth, his mouth agape and a wild look in his eyes.

"This food bites back!" Gharuk roared as he lunged forward at the outrunner that spotted him. His lash snickered out, wrapping around the spindly leg of the kobold and with a sudden brutal tug, there was an audible snap as the leg broke, bone protruding from the scaly flesh. The kobold barely had time to scream before the blessed balm of unconsciousness took him.

Gharuk didn't even break stride as he veered to his left towards the main pack of draconic half-men, the whip coming free with a practiced flick of his wrist. A predatory look on his face, Gharuk raised his shield, prepared for the inevitable retribution.

Quickly Abighail reloads her crossbow and brings it up to bear, looking down the sights at kobolds charging at her.  The thrill of combat is upon her and she blows a long breath over her teeth to calm herself, to steady her aim over the head of the nearest kobold coming at her and instead sight the larger kobold that she had wounded before.  She pulls the trigger, and watches the bolt fly harmlessly away.

c10 is neatly cloven in half, Ghorgath's glaive going clean through the dragonling in a diagonal cut, leaving its bottom half standing for a second before it too collapses.

Ghorza bumps into Ghorgath, as she isn't paying attention at all to where she's going. (both stated the same destination square)

The kobolds, being the pack of craven bastardly bottom-tier scavengers they are, decide to pile onto the closest food in sight.  That would be Gharuk. His whip doesn't seem so threatening... Oh how wrong they are. The big kobold, bleeding from a bolt wound, barks and howls its orders.

Gharuk was a dervish amidst the little pack of scavengers, twisting and spinning to bring his shield to bear against the attacks of the kobolds. c8 big kobold lets out a disconcerting howl as his right arm is torn to shreds by the whip, flesh parting from bone, skin splitting open, a massive gush of blood spurting from the ugly wonud. It flails around, then falls into a motionless heap.

c7 and d7 kobolds screech, in a frenzy now that they smell blood, and oblivious to the overwhelming force against them. "Food! FOOD!" they screech as they both keep stabbing their rusty short blades at Gharuk. Surprisingly, the attacks find their mark! One stabs the halforc in the leg, the other manages a gash against his face. (5 damage)

The attacks of the kobolds only seem to enrage Gharuk further. As his brother fells one, its arm dropping as lifeless to the floor as its owner, Gharuk turned to the other. He braced his stance and brought several powerful blows down on the hapless kobold, opening up slashes that would make a powerful man cry out, even flaying flesh from the creatures leg. The shock of this torturous injury was all too much and the kobold slumped, dead, to the floor.

All prey in sight dead or unconscious, Gharuk dashed forward a few steps, looking left and right, checking for any further sign of foes, but the gash on his face was bleeding into his eyes and he had to pause to clear his vision.

Abighail reloaded even as the last kobold fell, because six seemed small for a band of them.  She ran up to join her siblings.  Looking down at the massacred reptiles it occurred to her that someone else was going to have to cut their heads, her quarterstaff and crossbow being totally unsuited for the job.  She pulled her bolts out of the kobolds that she had hit and flicked the blood off them before returning them to their case.

The blood flowing across Gharuk's face looked grievous and Abighail reached out to him in sympathy.  "Are you all right brother?" she asked tremulously.

A large figure stands at the north end of the alleyway. Its armour is grey and well used; the horns on its helmet a cumbersome trophy. A spear slung over its shoulder. It looks on as the last kobold falls; then it seems to laugh, its shoulders shaking, but no sound emanates from it. Whenever the figure moves, its form seems to grow indistinct, making you unsure of where exactly it stands.

The kobolds look pale and almost sucked-dry from close up.

w (AC12 HP7/22) The spectre shimmers and writhes as weapons pass through it. For a moment it is surprised by the fury of the assaults - then it raises its hand in a sort of salute, and fades into and through the wall behind it, careful to not draw any more attacks from them. He is about as solid as a bad dream....

Searching through the poor kobolds turns up a hoard of ninety copper coins, and a rabbit's foot safely stowed in a leather pouch on the big kobold (possibly worthless).

XP: 125 xp for the kobolds and 100 xp for the specter = 56 XP to each character.

Do you want to explore more, or go back to New Phlan?

"Yeah!  You'd better run!" Abighail shouts at the wall where the spectre disappeared, then runs up to Ghorza with her hand in the air, ready for a "high-five" which is something that the orphans in Tantras would do when there was a victory to celebrate, like stealing a pie or knocking the hat off a noble-born that refused to give them a coin in passing.  Still, Abighail's excitement is tempered by the alien feeling left behind after casting a potent spell, a nauseous chill as the touch of her master recedes back into the void where it waits, taking a little part of her as it goes.

Re: Mission 1: Team WaaaGH!

Still gripped by his frenzy, Gharuk tried to chase the spectral warrior, his borrowed bladed striking sparks against the wall twice before he gave it up as a lost cause. As the red mist cleared from his eyes, the sailor breathed heavily and grinned at his family for a long moment; the thrill of victory glorious in his eyes.

"Good blade, brother!" he said as he handed it back, hilt first "and who knew about that lightning?! I wouldn't want to get on the wrong side of you little sister. Hah!" he joked as he swept Abighail up in a bear hug, spinning around like she was a little girl. He put his youngest sister down and turned to Ghorza and slapped her heartily on the back, despite her armour "I don't forget you, 'orza; I saw you chop that skrag good!"

His celebratory comments done, Gharuk looked around, taking stock with a deep frown of concentration. He appeared to be trying to count, mouthing the numbers as he pointed at the corpses of the kobolds, but seemed to get lost after three and had to start over. After several attempts, he just shrugged and pulled his handaxe from its ring at his belt and moved towards the nearest body, collecting his whip on the way. He stood over the corpse and coiled the long length of sinew and leather before kicking the body into a convenient position, bracing his stance and hacking the head from its shoulders. "Anyone got a sack?" he shouted over his shoulder, as he moved towards the next body.

Re: Mission 1: Team WaaaGH!

Ghorgath returns Abighail's high five, and is all smiles until he gets his short sword back. Turning around and examining the blade closely, he silently shakes his head at the nicks on the edge of the blade. Hiding his further displeasure, he sheathes the sword them puts a smile back on his face to hide the hours of work it will take to resharpen the blade.

While Ghaurk works on beheading the kobolds, Ghorgath continues to pace around, as if he is still looking for enemies.

Re: Mission 1: Team WaaaGH!

Gharuk's bear hug takes Abighail totally by surprise; it was like some kind of friendly attack meant to disorient her, and it worked.  He spun her around and it was almost like she should hold onto him for support, but really he was lucky that she wasn't holding onto one of her daggers.  Before she could think what to do, he had released her and left her standing there with her arm still in the air.  Ghorgath comes along and slaps it, and the spell is broken.  Being in a family could be strange sometimes.

Re: Mission 1: Team WaaaGH!

Gharuk made short work of beheading the kobolds, dragging the grisly trophies around by the ears. By the time he was done, he was covered in gore. He swiped at his face and arms a bit but gave up when he realised he was just smearing the mess and not cleaning anything.

"Hrrg. I need a bath. Or a clean rag." He looked down at his clothes "I might need a new shirt too. Hey!" he said suddenly, distracted by whoever was holding the rabbits-foot charm they found on the larger kobolds body "Do you want that? I'll give you my share of the copper for it."

Ghorgath checks out the area, looking for anything hidden or missed. He still expects another wave of kobolds to come rushing in.

Perception check: 21.

What sort of weapons did the kobolds use, were they wearing any armour? What entrances and exits area there to this area? Did the large kobold have any things on him like scribbled notes, a better weapon etc?

Catching her breath after her first real combat Ghorza bowed her head in shame.  As a follower of Tempus she hadn't landed a single blow, but just ran around like a small child chasing a ball.  "Tempus forgive-I shall do better" she muttered.

Looking around at her brothers and sister a smile crept over her face.  Relief actually that no one was hurt.  Although her family was a new addition in her short life, she was finding solace and comfort in them.

"Yeah, let's go get some pies!  I could eat a whole one myself."  Abighail says with relish.  The day had been good so far, and only pie could make it better.

Grinning, he blurts out "Just don't start saying food food food, or they will assume we are kobolds", he chuckles.

Walking back to the locked gate, Ghorgoth checks to make sure everyone is packed and ready to go. He raises his eyebrows to Ghorzo and looks directly at her pack on the ground. Smiling, he taps on the gate with the butt of his glaive.

"Six kobold heads ready for you, open the gate."

Re: Mission 1: Team WaaaGH!

(Un)fortunately, no more enemies challenge the party. The dead end stays quite dead, with no unded additions. There are definite sounds of movement fom the other side of the walls, though, but nothing seems interested in broaching into the side street you are in.

Apart from the rabbbt's foot and copper coins, there is nothing else of value here. If you feel particularly copper-pinching, the slings the kobolds were using might fetch a copper apiece. Their rusty, damaged dagger-sized blades seem worthless - perhaps the blacksmith might smelt them and make something useful out of the metal. They had no armor. What hoard they might have is probably behind the horthern wall, through the small cracks they barely squeezed through to attack you. You could break the wall down, or climb over it into the adjoining space.

Who has the rabbit foot?

A guard opens the gate, in answer to Ghorgat's banging, just a little bit. His name is Shortly, and he is the guy who usually draws the shortest straw. The other guards are on top of the three-metre wall, well protected and ready to throw down spears and rocks should there be trouble.

Because, let's be honest, who in their right mind wants to open the door for four violent, gore-splattered half-orcs?

"Oh... hey. Come in, come in. Good show." Shortly has an aristrocratic accent, which is strange, because he is a simple guardman. He pulls the outer gate open to let the party through, and stays well clear of the gore-soaked members.

Boros is having a snack in the small square on the other side of the gate. He grunts something through a mouthful of onions and cheese, and points to a large basket labeled "Kobold Heads". Finally, he swallows and washes it down with applewine.

"Good job. Each kobold head turned in is rewarded by ten copper in the town hall. You can take the rest of the day off and get settled in. Questions?"

Looking at the others, Ghorgath quickly shakes his head. He was just looking forward to sitting down and taking a break. He heads on through the gate and towards the barracks.

Re: Mission 1: Team WaaaGH!

A curt "Hrnk" is all the response either Shortly or Boros get from Gharuk as he tosses the heads into the basket. As he head towards the barracks in the wake of his brother, he looks closely at the rabbits foot, dangling from its leather thong.

OOC: I've got the rabbits foot, in exchange for my share of the copper we found on the kobolds (seeing as I got no objection to the suggestion earlier!), if everyone else wants to take a third share of that. I assume we'll divvy up the 60cp for the heads equally, but if anyone wants to try and gip Gharuk out of his share, it shouldn't be hard; he's not that bright and fond of gambling!

Sorry for the long OOC!

Following the others out of the slums Ghorza takes one last look over her shoulders looking back at her first true combat.

Then turning to the others; "I agree Abighail food would be a welcome addition and a chance for us to discuss us next course of action."
