Mission 2: Team WaaaGH!

(You know the drill. Every group gets the same mission.)

You are all allowed the rest of the day off. You had the chance to explore the city a little bit and buy some odds and ends. The dwarven blacksmith might be glad to see others of his ilk, since the current dwarven population of Phlan counts exactly three - "An' he ain't on good terms with dem two bitches."

(Make any simple weapon and armor purchases you want - all costs are standard as listed in the PHB)

The night offers some restful sleep in the communal barracks (or elsewhere in the city if you prefer). The poisonous river and high wall form enough of a barrier that monster incursions are a rarity. However, Boros is not taking his duty lightly, and there are plenty of patrols around.

Your day's work is already planned in advance for you. Boros opens a partial map of the slum area. It's a parchment crawling with additions, corrections and smudges from food. The slums seem a mess of collapsed houses and blocked streets. The dragonflight left the entire area in ruins, and it will take considerable time to clear the area once you make it safe. Boros jabs his finger at a particular spot and mutters something about scouts spotting the centre of kobold activity there. After you take care of that and prove your worth, you'll be free to pick your next assignment. He spits on the floor and grumbles that you seem like you could handle this.

 ABCD
1??-+
2?--+
3???-
4??--

Each square is about 250 meters.
+ marks cleared area ("Good work, team!")
- marks mapped but not cleared area ("Might still be some beasties there.")
? marks unmapped area ("Will get to that later.")
The spot Boros indicates is in C2.

The trip to the target area is uneventful. The guards, of course, don't leave the wall or escort you out into the slums. Orders, they say. But you get the impression Boros simply doesn't want to lose his soldiers.

Navigating through the narrow passageways and collapsed houses takes almost half an hour. You get the distinct impression of being watched, but can't quite spy anyone following your movement. The center of kobold activity Boros wants taken out turns out to be a largish, still standing two-storey house with a collapsed roof. It's built of thick stone blocks, and looks more like a fortification than a townhouse. A thin wisp of smoke rises from the place, and even from afar you can smell some sort of stew.

A single kobold guard paces around the house, muttering about how hungry it is and how unafir life is and how he needs to find a new band to hang on to.

(You can start anywhere on map edge. If you need to run away, you cn do so from a map edge as well. The kobold guard hasn't spotted you yet. He has AC12 and HP5 and is armed with a rusty blade and a sling.)

Abighail slinks out of the shadows near the kobold guard and pulls the lens of the ancient entity out of her shirt.  Letting it twinkle in the sunlight she mutters the words of an eldritch charm and beckons to the kobold. "All the food you can eat," she purrs, "Riches beyond counting.  We are strong and the others don't deserve your service.  Join us and we will make you a king among your kind."

Gharuk lurked in the ruined building to the south of where Abighail stood in plain view. The little creature whines and sniffles, its eyes regarding the half-orcs. But the promise of food and riches an strength are too much for its little mind. It stumbles towards Abighail. "Cooked roach and fried bat and all the mattress to sleep on?" it rambles. Then it stops and looks at the building, as if trying to remember something.  Perhaps it  contemplated inviting its brothers and sisters into a new, better life? Be it as it may, it tuned back to Abighail, and hastened to her. "I want!  I want!" it yips and hisses

Mission 2: Team WaaaGH!

"You can have everything that you want, so long as you stick with us," Abighail says, hoping that she isn't promising anything that she can't deliver.  The charm spell would only last an hour, after which the kobold would be free and might choose to rethink any deals made.  Moving closer to him, she presents her side.  "We're the New Gang, and we're going to take over this city.  You can join us, and get food and coins and a mattress to sleep on, and other kobolds will do your bidding.  But before we let you join, I need you to answer some questions.  First, how many others are in that building there, and are they all kobolds or something else?  Secondly, what are they doing in there and are any of them due to come out soon?  Third, are any of them your friends or would you rather have all of the food and the loot for yourself?"  This last question was the delicate one since she didn't know what kobold relationships were like, and hoped that evil creatures were as selfish and ruthless as the kids back at the orphanage.

Meanwhile, she sent her thoughts to her siblings so that she didn't have to raise her voice and risk being heard by the others in the building. "We should each cover a door in case something comes out.  When a fight starts, we won't be able to keep the others from hearing.  And be wary of those windows."

Gharuk watched the others cover the eastern door and, seeing things well in hand around this side, slipped away unnoticed; a flitting, if rather large, shadow in the dark. As he approached the western edge of the ruin he was occupying, he stopped a moment, conscious of the south-facing window looking out on his position; the open area before him would be a risky dash to traverse without being seen.

OOC: Abighail - As I understand it, you require LoS for your telepathy, so I'm assuming Gharuk didn't get your "message"...we'll have to leave the fun of him hearing your voice in his head for another day! Regardless, he's come to the same conclusion as you and is moving to cover the west-facing doors anyway.

"New Gang, yes yess." The Kobold nods slavishly, staring up at Abighail. "There will be so much fun. Of course, of course! I could tell the others about it, yes? I am sure they will like miss as much as I do. There are five, ten, many in the house. And the big boss. And the cook. The cook is a good guy, yes he is." The little creature nods its head energetically. "They are cooking lunch, and if they ware my friends, they wouldn't have sent me out, no they wouldn't." It shakes its head, eyes sad. "That made me feel unloved and alone. But then you showed up!" It gives a small yip of happiness, and fishes for a scritch on its filthy head, just like it was a dog or some other pet.

Ghorza moved slowly through the rubble, but luck is with her and she doesn-t make too much noise. Ghorgath is with his back against the rough stone wall. From close up, the two can hear muttering and pot-banging from within the house. Someone is cooking in there allright, and the smell coming out the window is not bad at all. A hungry half-orc just might hear his bowels protesting their emptiness.

Gharuk's moment of caution pays off as a kobold looks out the south-facing window and throws out a bucketful of refuse. It doesn't seem to notice anything amiss, and turns from the window to attend to its chores.

A deep and throaty voice from inside the house starts singing a horribly out of tune and out of place sea shanty.

The kobold nuzzles into the scritching sensation Abighail gifts him. For a second he looks like a pet... a filthy, quite dangerous one. He taps his left foot st the scritching reatches a particularly pleasant spot. "Ohhhh yes. So nice. I am Vrrtanai'sch. But others call me Squinty. The big Boss, out here? Nah, it's too bright. Perhaps if there is an offer. But you don't want that, no you don't. The others,  Icould tell them to come out, they would, yes they would. But not now. It's lunchtime, and they really want to eat, really hungry." Its stomach rumbles loudly. "Just like I am. Ever since the Boss stopped food shipments we've been starving, yes we were. And he seemed like such a nice guy." It shakes its head, what must be an expression of betrayal on its face. "A shadow man walking through walls? There are seven, I heard, yes I did. They hunt everyone for sport and for food. They are hungry, too, always hungry. Cold eyes. Their master is in the graveyard, I heard too."

It taps its feet. "So... what are your friends doing? I mean.. those are.. .and you are... you could instead just talk to the boss, you know? After all, anyone who worships Luthic will at least talk to anyone with orc blood." Its beady eyes shine.

The disjointed singing and the smells of almost ready foot from inside the house continue. The shanty's words turn to butchery, cooking and shipmates gorging on delicious food. Listening more closely, the voice seems almost female. There is some clanking sounds of earthen dishes and tapping of small feet.

Then she whispers to Squinty, "Okay, act like you're attacking me," and she picks him up and holds him at arms' length. "AIEEE!  MONSTERS!" she screams in her best damselly voice and staggers backward in front of the window, spins around once, and then staggers backward out of view.

With his family out of sight and unaware of any developments, Gharuk was taken aback by Abighails scream. Torn between sticking to the plan (such of it as he understood) and running to her aid, the burly half-orc decided that the others must know what they're doing and that they must still be relying on him to cover the rear exits. Abandoning his cautious approach, he broke into a dead sprint straight at the building, ensuring he stayed out of sight of the window he'd already passed. Once he was at the corner, he pressed himself against it and checked his weapons. He took a few deep breaths, hoping he'd not been seen or heard and readied himself for his next move.

The plan makes Squinty smile. It appeals to its crude sense of humor. So it plays along, feigning all sorts of scratching and biting and clawing against Abighail. It's a good actor, too.

Damselly... halforcish voice. That's a novelty for the kobolds inside the building. Sort of. There's some commotion from the inside; kobold heads visible on the windows, peering out to see what teh fuck is going on. A woman's voice from inside cusses; there's a thwap or two as kobolds are smacked with a ladle and pushed away from the window. A halforcish, dark-faced woman looks out, squinting because of the bright light outside.

"Squinty, you dumb git! What the frak are you doing with that lady?" she yells at the kobold.

Just as she yells the door opens and kobolds stream out. Right into the waiting Ghorgath and Ghorza. The first kobold out the door is neatly bisected. The second one notices this and tries to stop, but the half-dozen of his packmates squeeze him out of the door and right onto Ghorza's axe. he dies messily.  The third kobold that was about to scamper out of the house manages to stop and push back against all odds, yipping and chirping.

With the commotion out front, Gharuk was champing at the bit for some action, but he knew the plan (or at least, what he thought the plan was). He crept around the corner, up to the door, but made no attempt to judge an opportune moment to pass the window; any of the occupants would likely see him clearly if they were facing the right way. Once he got to the door, he rolled his shoulders, readying himself for what he was about to do next...

The kobold in the doorway kneels, suddenly, as if Ghogath's commanding voice had suddenly hewn its legs from underneath it. It blinks with its beady black eyes, confused.

Abighail releases Squinty and rolls underneath a window. The sorceress on the other side doesn't offer her a chance to practice grappling, however. Instead, she barks orders at the little lizads. These shake their heads and obey, quickly. Wooden hatches are slammed on the windows, and the kneeling kobold pulled back into the building. Or at least he would be if Ghorgath woudl let the poor thig live- There s a splash of blood as his glaive reaches out and bisects the poor lizard-thing.

The kobolds inside aren't particularly shocked. Kobold life is cheap, after all - even if Squinty frowns a little bit. The entrance door is slammed shut and bolted.

Abighail dashes south around the house. Beady eyes follow her movement, hidden behind the barred windows.

Some kind of horn blares from inside the house, the sound increasing in intensity for several seconds before dying away.

Gharuk gives an animalistic grunt and slams his foot into the door, forcing it off its hinges and onto the poor kobold trying to fix a bar across it. Squish. Kobold pancake. The two kobolds helping their poor fellow jump back and hiss, then hurl a dagger apiece at the halforc brute. Both of the blades hit and inflict a scratch. If that kind of wound in a raging halforc can be called that. Prhaps they're betting on him getting lockjaw from the rust on the blades? Who knows? (2 hits for 1 damage each, before adjustments and so on)

Ghorgath and Ghorza smash the door together. There's a loud cracking sound, and the door cracks down the middle, its halves still barely held in position by the hinges and cracked crossbar. Kobolds on the other side yip and chitter, trying to hold the door shut. (kobolds roll 10 on a str check with advantage to hold the door in place. Beat that with a strength/athletics roll to bust the door completely next round)

Mission 2: Team WaaaGH!

Gharuk practically rode the door as it fell into the room, his extra weight eliciting one final squeak of a death-rattle from the flattened kobold beneath it. He didn't even register the scratches the thrown daggers inflicted on him; maybe later he'd be mildly annoyed that they'd torn his new shirt. For the present, he cracked his whip with a terrifying roar, put his shoulder behind his shield and battered at one of the kobolds before him, attempting to drive the lizard-like creature back.

As he bulled his way into the room, the half-orc stared wild-eyed, snarled and bellowed at the occupants. "Weapons down cullies an' sit on yer hands and we'll think about not killing the lot of yer! Ye've 'til me brother gets through that door to decide!"

Ghorgath's glaive cuts through the remaining crossbar of the door like hot knife through butter. The wooden halves of the door collaps to the sides, forcing the kobolds to jump back to avoid being crushed. They settle for tossing their rusty daggers at the huge half-ord in an attempt to stop him from coming any closer. One of the kobolds actually hits, the blade nicking Ghorgath's cheek. (2 damage)

Gharuk shoves one of the kobolds out of the way. To be honest, it was more like kicking the poor critter away. It holds its face where the imprint of Gahruk's boot is still quite visible and yips something in a pained voice, then spits out a few broken teeth. (Rules-wise, please check the rules thread again , particularly the part of moving around corners.) Gharuk tries laughing intimidatingly, but the closest few kobolds kind of stare at him, then chitter and laugh, pointing...

Then Abighail bursts in and ROARS! The previously so amused kobolds nearly fall over with fright and decide they'd rather not face her. They run, over and under the table in the middle of the room.

Ghorza makes short work of the remaining part of the door.

Once inside, the members of the party see half a dozen human and demihuman corpses hanging from hooks in the walls, some still being drained of blood, and some already having been mostly butchered and harvested.

In the south side of the room, next to a lazily bubbling cauldron, there is a quite shapely halforcish woman, sultry of skin and with childbearing hips. A large medallion of jet-black stone hangs on a simple cord around her neck, inscribed with an orcish rune. Ghorza could recognize this as a symbol of Luthic, the orcish goddess of fertility.

"STOP!" she yells at he party in the common tongue, her hands high up in a pleading gesture. "What you are doing is wrong!"

Gharuk paid little attention to the carnal decoration, his attention focused on the very pregnant woman standing near the cauldron. Almost idly, he held his shield ready against any kobolds that looked too aggressive, ready to batter them away should they prove meddlesome. With a practiced flick of his wrist, he looped his whip back upon itself and pointed the "sheathed" weapon at the half-orc. He snarled at her, low and animalistic, before speaking. "You in charge of these lizards? Tell 'em to drop their weapons or I turn loose my lash again"

"Children!" the halforc yells. "Put down your knives and be quiet!" She has a commanding presence - to the kobolds at least. They hunker down low, skittering and withdrawing cautiously to surround her. She seems genuinely concerned for the little lizards, even going as far as to hug a pair to her sides as she stares daggers at the invading party. "We're just trying to survive. If we could, we'd be long gone from this accursed city. Don't you see how starved these children are? We are prisoners here! And now you come to kill us!"

The kobolds growl, but the halforc shushes them down. "We have no way to leave this place. So if you want, you can... butcher us right here where we stand." She sniffles.

Abighail finds this woman hard to believe.  She treated the kobolds as if they were her children, an arrangement that they'd probably only agree to so long as she kept feeding them.  It didn't make sense that they'd want to stay here in the slums, and the bodies hanging from the walls were creeping Abighail out.

"Prisoners, what do you mean?  You were the ones locking yourselves in a moment ago.  Who is keeping you here?  I think it's time you filled your bellies and then hit the road.  Head west and keep going until you find green fields and slow rabbits."  Abighail glowers at the kobolds in her way as she forces herself toward the cooking pot.  Its contents smelled good but she wasn't going to eat any for fear of it containing dwarf meat.

The kobolds move aside to let Abighail have whatever spot she wants. After all, she's big and scary and looks more than a bit like their matron. One kobold even reaches out to touch Abi's leg reverently.

The halforcish woman gives a short laugh in reply to Abi's accusations. The tone of her voice is calmer now. It seems there won't be a bloodbath right away, and that seems to be enough to take the edge of panic off her.

"There's the poison river to the north, the wall with its archers to the east, the rope guild to the south, and Norris' gang along with Boss' guards to the west. None of them will let us pass. You think we want to be here? This wretched ruin in the middle of more ruins. No... if we could, we would have run away."

Turning to Gharuk, she smiles. The expression on her face almost seductive. After all, Gharuk is masculine as they come, and the woman is obviously attracted to him at first glance.

"That's... okay. We can help the poor little guy out from beneath the door. The bones will heal in no time. Kobolds are tough little critters, you know. More gristle than bone." She flashes him another smile, toying with a lock of her hair. "Yes, if the damn archers didn't poke us full of arrows we'd have bought passage out through the docks a long time ago."

Squinty pushes through the assembled kobolds, already drooling. "Food! Foood!" Some of the other kobolds look at the little runt funny. Whatever happened with him, they ask themselves.

Ghorgath's barking almost moves the kobolds to leave their caretaker behind. But they yip softly and look at the halforcish woman instead. They're not attacking, however.

Ghorza practically runs into a big halforc fellow approaching at a dead sprint from the west. A sack with groceries discarded somewhere behind him. "Mila!" he yells. "Mila! Are you okay?" A greataxe glimmers in his hands, an expression of panic on his face. "What did you do to her!" he screams at Ghorza as he runs towards her full tilt.

"Alright, it seems like everyone has calmed down. So I think if we carry on with that trend, we can work something out."

Lowering his glaive, he gestures with his thumb to himself "My name is Ghorgath, and we've been sent in here to 'get rid' of the kobold's. However safely escorting the lot of you out of the area still qualifies as 'getting rid'. Can you ask these little chaps to line up outside so we can give them lunch in an orderly fashion, because I think a few of them are going to pass out if they don't eat something soon."

Mission 2: Team WaaaGH!

Seeing her becoming flirtatious, Gharuk puffed himself up and flexed his arms for the womans appreciation; the cloth of his shirt straining against his mighty thews. Then, when she mentioned the flattened kobold, a guilty look crept across the open-book of his face and he spun on his heel suddenly, already moving toward the de-hinged door. "Uh, oops, yeah. Sorry little fella" he said, lifting the rotting wood carefully and peering underneath. Once he was sure he wouldn't damage the kobold further, he slung his shield across his back with a shrug of his shoulder and picked up the door with both hands.

He was just picking his way carefully over the little unconscious form on the floor to lean the door back up against the frame when he spotted the big male outside running toward his sister, shouting. His hackles went up immediately and he growled low before stepping out and heaving the door into the path of the approaching half-orc. "Hey you! He challenged Leave her alone! You got beef? Come take a slice! You and me!" Gharuk stood tall, threw his shield and his weapons to the ground, opening his arms wide and beckoning with his fingers in the time-honoured invitation to brawl.

OOC: Not sure how much of the above you'll let fly, GM; there's quite a lot there and the Male half-orc is quite close. If you'd prefer I reign it back a little or go into combat rounds, just shout and I'll edit. I've rolled some dice, but there's by no means any need to use any of them.

Abighail hears the commotion outside and watches Gharuk haul his meaty thews out the door in response, and figures the boys will work it out the way they do.  Surrounded by hungry kobolds, she tries to keep her cool as she spoons out a bowl of stew for Squinty.  "I don't think we're going to be able to get them to line up, Gorgath," she says, "I'll be lucky if I don't lose a finger handing out lunch."  She recognizes that being master of the food is how the matron keeps control of the kobolds, and is quick to insinuate herself into that position.  She spoons out bowl after bowl carefully making sure that each recipient knows who they're getting their lunch from.

While she does this, she prods Mila for information.  "So this rope guild to the south, why are they called that?  Big business making ropes around here?  Do they have a nicer place than this that you'd rather stay in?  If the boys outside don't kill each other, they might prove tougher than a bunch of hemp-twisters can handle.  What kind of members does Norris' gang have?  Who's the Boss?"

Mission 2: Team WaaaGH!

The situation winds down after this, after the charding half-orc realizes that his sister is in no great danger.

Mila, on her part, clings to Gharuk, probes his massive muscles, and chirps flirtatiously while tryingto andwer Abighail's questions while her brother glares over the edge of his axe at her sister's newest conquest.

"Uh? No, nobody actually lives in the rope guild apart from something big that eats everyone who enters. The guild has dozens of narrow winding passageways. The rope guild took their name seriously, heh. The dragonflight put them out of business, however.

"Norris the Gray is the boss of the Well. Also the boss of the Greeters. He hates anyone not on his payroll. A territorial bastard. I guess having his daughter kidnapped will do that to you, hehe.

"He has a few dozen kobolds, some gnolls, and a big beastie he uses to keep the others in check.

"Nobody knos who the Boss is. When he does appear, he has a shitload of guards around him. Some say it's all an illusion and that he's actually a maedar. Others, say he's a demon. Eh. Doesn't matter anyways.

The kobolds line up for the meal in a surprisingly orderly way, each with a wooden bowl and spoon. Soon enough everything is filled with the sounds of slurping, chewing and burping. Abi doesn't lose any fingers, even though it's a close call several times.

The poor kobold from beneath the door is saved just in time, and spoon-fed. It yips happily through all the bandages that make him look like a mummy.

Meanwhile, the big halforc eyes Ghorza and estimates his chances at winning her over. After all, she exudes confidence and strength, and her hips seem quite childbearing as well.

So, what are you going to do with this motley crew?

Gharuk was lapping up the attention Mila was heaping on him. When she mentioned "something big" in the Rope Guild, his ears pricked up. "Sounds like the Guild might be a good place to hole up; lots of twisty passages means easy to defend. If the city can get supplies there, it could be a place to call home." He turned to his brother "What d'you think bro? Fancy carving out a bit of territory for ourselves and our new friends? Sounds like we get to go monster hunting in the deal too!" The grin on his face was wide, but there was a pleading look in his eyes; Gharuk was clearly taken with this little crew and it didn't look like he wanted to abandon them to their fate.

Now that the kobolds lined up and did as they were told, Ghorgath was a lot calmer. He even quietly gave 'snickers' one of his ration packs as a reward.

He turns to the male half-orc and says, "How many other groups are out there. Do you think you could contact them and talk them into all moving in one pack when we clear a path out of here?"

Turning to his brother when he mentions something big, Ghorgath nods "So if I get this right, the rope guild 'would' be a good place to camp if it wasn't for something big and nasty. Right, then lets get a war party together and take the thing out. I think I know a dwarf who can help with some extra muscle."

Backhanding the half-orc (Markus) seems to only inflame his interest. Had Ghorza given him the cold shoulder, he might have just shrugged. But he licks the blood from his lips and looks positively enamored. That belch was awfully sexy too.

So he tries to win her over by getting out a few big carrots. "Hey. Carrots are good for you. Have some."

Mila meanwhile enjoys having Gharuk around. His help in the kitchen is appreciated, and the two are practically alone in the house as the others frolic around outside.

The kobolds run this way and that , bullied around by Abighail and Ghorgath. There is much confusion, some collisions, and a humorous moment as four kobolds turn around, trip and fall at precisely the same time. But they're sated and don't resent playing games as is.

"I don't think the rope guild is good for us. What lurks within wi sure to be something horrible. No, we should somehow find a way to get out of here." Mila chats with Gharuk, and he can feel her pinch his behind more often than not as she passes behind him. There's plenty to do inside. The groceries Markus brought are vegetables and some stale bread. The meat is chopped and made into manageable packs, just right for kobold transport.

Markus follows Ghorza around like a puppy, waiting for reaffirmation of her affection for him (another backhand would serve fine in that capacity).

No need for you lot to go running off harum-scarum around the countryside looking for shelter and grub when we can set you up good, right here" The ex-sailor had an almost content expression on his face and spoke in a matter-of-fact tone, as if everything was already settled and a-okay.

The rope guild turns out to be a series of interconnected buildings with thick grey stone walls. They occupy most of the southern shore of the Slums district, blocking access to the Moonsea. The walls are covered with carvings and intersions suggesting ropes and braiding. The buildings are mostly intact, apart from the collapsed roofs and upper floors. There's a silence upon them / one might say, an unnatural one. On Boros' map, the rope guild is in A4 to D4; his map indicates that scouts have entered the east end and gotten away with a scare. The western end of the guild remains unexplored; scout teams sent there didn't return.

The entrance is in C3. The walls seem fairly thick, even if they are chipped by dragonfire here and there. The whole complex was apparently abandoned after the dragonflight a few years ago.

The entrance stands open, the wooden doors long since reduced to charred cinders. The inside of the guild is completely dark and silent. A sense of foreboding and unease emanates from inside.

The small army under half-orcish leadership stops at the gates of the Rope Guild. The immediate vincinity seems less eerily quiet now that the yipping kobolds make the base camp in the entrance corridor. They even set up the cauldron, even though there's nothing to burn. Mila shakes her head and looks at them like one would at children playing. A few other kobolds tap down the corridors in the immediate vincinity. Those turn out to be quite narrow, almost claustrophobic, with a thick smell of dust and decay. Something must have crawled deeper into tha passages to die. Something big and smelly, and its last meal was beans and cabbage. The kobolds don't mind the smell, however.

Your friendly kobold seems enthusiastic about findnig treasure, and sticks close to Abighail.

Markus is still following Ghorza around. He keeps his distance, however, but his longing gaze is never far from her.

Ghorgath digs through his pack and pulls something out. "I have an idea."

Holding up a full days ration pack, "Out there somewhere is a big beasty. The first one to find it, and come back here and tell us about it, gets this ration pack."

Ghorgath rolled 10 using 1d20.  Survival.

Taking his crossbow off his shoulder, he hands it to Gharuk while raising his eyebrow and gesturing towards Mila. Quietly he says, "Give this to Mila, she'll need it."

Like a presidential escort, Ghorgath arranges the kobolds into pairs, to form a 30ft radius perimeter around the group.

"Now keep your eyes open, if you see any beasties, monsters or anything that could attack us, wave your hands in the air."

So the part moves onwards.

Markus brightens visibly when Ghorza graces him with a few choice words. "Of course!" he grunts, staring at the warpriest with round eyes. "Everything for you!" Wit that he jogs to aid the kobolds.

Mila shakes her head at the antics of her brother. When she's offered the crossbow, she puts up her hands defensively. "I'm not allowed to. Luthic frowns upon females using weapons. I wouldn't know how to use that, anyways." She glances around at the narrow corridors, then sticks closer to Gharuk. Then closer still, until she's practically glued to him. "You'll keep me safe, right?" she whispers up to him.

The kobolds form a sort of irregular perimeter around the half-orcs, whipped into place by Ghorgath and Markus. Vrrtanai'sh acts as a sort of lieutenant, staying close to Abighail.

The bad smells intensify as you penetrate deeper into the building.

There is an odd sound from the east, like the hiss of suddenly released steam. From the west, there is the faintest sound of crunching branches. Or perhaps it's bones...

With his shield in one hand, Gharuk put his other arm protectively around Mila for a quick squeeze; sufficiently, even painfully strong, of course. " 's Long as I'm around, you're not in danger." he murmured, before letting go the embrace and turning his attention to their surroundings once more.

He doesn't seem perturbed by the various noises going off around them, but turns his head quickly at each new potential danger; wary a a cat. His movements are careful as he advances further into the ruins, following the others' lead.

Gharuk's playfully painful squeze makes Mila shudder. She then looks around, blushing viciously, feeling at least a little guilty for the carnal thoughts flooding her mind. Fortunately for her, everyone else is busy being observant, and feeling the closeness of death.

The corridors get narrower and more twisty as the small army advances eastwards, the volume of the noises increasing steadily.

After ten minutes or so of slow and deliberate advance, the kobolds chitter and yell excitedly. Rushing towards the sounds, the party finds a larger chamber, perhaps 30 feet in diameter. You find the source of the steam sounds there - nestled against the southern wall is a contraption of obviously gnomish origin, huffing and puffing, occasionally sending hisses of steam through randomly placed valves. A hot fire is burning merrily in its lower part, fireplace caged off by thick iron bars and glass panes. There is a mess of brass tubes running from the furnace and the tank above it to a cagelike contraption holding some sort of spinning wheel. Small arcs of electricity dance over the wheel as it spins. An overwhelming scent of ozone fills the room. The floor in the centre looks as if it has been cleaned today. Overall, the noise in here is almost deafening. There is also a small pile of logs next to the furnace, ready to feed the fire.

There is nothing else in the eastern part of the maze. As the party doesn't fiddle with the machinery, nothing else of not happens there. The sweep northwards reveals little more of interest apart from dusty, empty corridors that were once used as storage.

Continuing the search into the west part of the maze makes the kobolds considerably more nervous. The corridors seem to have numerous dead ends here; here and there fragments of what must be bones litter the floor. The crunching sounds continue, echoing somewhere towards the west. The war party advances carefully...

...until there is a dual koboldish shriek, as two scouts meet an untimely end. One of them flies through the air, producing a sickening, wet impact against a wall. The other is held in the claw of a large, bestial, green creature; it peers through the narrow hallway at the Abighail and Gharuk, then casually takes a bite out of the still struggling kobold in its hand. The little creature's screams end abruptly, replaced by the sound of sloppy chewing.

Gharuk had clearly not had any experience with such a large foe before and hesitated before the obvious physical superiority of the troll to his own beefy build. Taking his brothers lead, though, Gharuk stepped forward, shoving Mila behind him, drew forth the axe at his belt and let fly; the bolts had made it bleed and if it bleeds it can be killed...right?

Ghorgath tosses two oil flasks at the troll. They crack with large pop and spread oil chaotically over the troll and the ground he stands on. Holding up his crossbow, he shows the soaked cloth covered end to the troll and smiles as he lights it.

Raising the crossbow to his should, he pegs the troll in the knee, and the oil (and the troll) burst into flames. The troll's screams of pain pierce the halls ...

... I'm melting, meeeellltttiiinngggggg the troll gurgles as it disolves into a puddle of green ichor.

OOC: This is my attempt to wrap up this encounter, as I fear this thread, this group, and the entire game is at risk of folding. This is me hitting the emergency alarm.
