Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

Are there "IC" threads?  Kidding.

To introduce myself, I'm not a developer or programer, and I don't have an Android, but I'm curious, especially about the prospect of an iOS app.  Also, I'd like to see/learn about the current functionality of the Android app.

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

Right now the Android app just sends notifications.  My server monitors your XML/Atom feed and sends a push notification to let you know to visit the site. Eventually I would like to add some additional functionality.  I'm already looking at rMail and possibly some preemptive post fetching.

Hopefully by having  a mobile forum will attract an iOS dev for you guys.  I doubt I'll ever have the time or resourses to develop on that platform.  Unfortunately you need an Apple PC to develop for them.

Edit: changed an autocorrect typo

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

Hey guys. I'm a digital project manager, by trade.

I'm an android user.

I think I found a bug today...

I had two notifications - the later one for Game X and an earlier one for Game Y. I pulled down my notification tab, and clicked the Game X notification. I was prompted to select a browser AWESOME ADDITION BY THE WAY ;) and when the browser opened it took me to Game Y.

Or... I clicked Game Y and it took me to Game X. I can't exactly remember... I was on the tram coming home from work. Ha. But yes. A little bug there, with multiple notifications.

--

As for future additional functionality... we'll have to get really creative to figure out what we can do with such limited touchpoints for data ;)

Hello Ninthbit....  If you are watching this thread, could you please stop in and update if you will be reviving your app?  Miss it dearly.

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

So it has come alive again!  But, uhm, I think it is checking very frequently, because if I clear all the indicators without checking the website, they all pop back up about 10 minutes later.

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

I gotta be honest, I set up a custom vibration pattern for this app and when it went off earlier I may have gasped aloud. Needless it made for an awkward exchange with the customer I was helping. >_<

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

So far it seems to be fine on my end.  Are you sure you don't have a high traffic game getting posts?  For example, Wanted Players pretty much needs to be in your ignore list.

A GM updating the character list can also produce false-positives sometimes.

Worst case, you could make sure every game has all threads marked as read, and also clear the app data and relog into it.

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

I'm getting the same thing.  The exact same forums popping up even after clearing the notifications.  The list grows slowly over time as more forums have changes.  The ones that are popping up again are ones that definitely do not have changes every few minutes.

No, I'm getting multiple notifications for a forum that only has one message waiting when I check it.

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

Yeah, that was a surprise! I thought my phone was going haywire and then I remembered the custom buzz and sound I assigned to your app. Thanks, I've missed it!

And it seems to be working perfectly normal for me. I always Ignore anything that's not one of the games I run or play in, but it seems to work great on my phone.

I was having the same issue. Logging out of the notifier and logging back in seems to have fixed the problem.

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

Well that was fun... Some default settings changed between versions for the database, so it wasn't updating its feed history....   Basically it kept thinking that any game that has updated since June (when it went offline) was needing a notice.

Hopefully there won't be any more false positives.

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

Yikes!

Seems that it is not working for my Pixel 3 any longer.

I am getting the following when I try to Register.

First box gets a check mark then after several seconds I get:

"GCM Registration Failed
Google Cloud Messaging failed to resister..."

BTW, Running Android version 9, Pie

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

In reply to sherlock (msg # 22):

It looks like Google is finally killing GCM (Google Cloud Messaging).  They have a newer notification API that would require a bit of work for me to update the app for.

They said like 6 months ago that I had till Nov to update.  It seems they killed new registrations but are currently letting messages through for already registered clients (since I got this one).

Sorry to say this, but I stopped working on this app years ago, and it's not likely to get updated since I don't play on here any more.

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

In reply to Ninthbit (msg # 23):

Well that's tragic. The code is on GitHub, right? So I could take over development on this?

Would you want to give me access to update the actual app on Google when I make changes?

Please keep us updated on if this will live, or if it's a new app, where we can get it!  I love rpol and this app is amazing!  Thanks to anyone involved!

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

The code has been posted here for years:
https://github.com/ninthbit/RPoLNotifier

I wouldn't want to publish someone else's fork, Google only charges a one time $25 free to be able to publish apps, so I'd ask you to simply self publish and post a link here.

byzantinex,

I would love to see the app stay free of ads and cost.  In that end, I would be willing to donate $ to help defray costs if that would help spur you on!!!

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

Newly returned to RPOL.  What's going on with RPOL?  Seems like this site has a great community but is missing a few cool nick backs that might make it more contemporary: notifications, instant chat, maps, audio/video chat, etc.

I'm seeing a lot of players playing on Discord (announcing it on Reddit & other sites), and obv all the online game table sites.  I just did my first campaign in BeyondDnD, Discord, and a few dif map sites -- was surprised that RPOL holds up so strongly against all those "new" sites & tools.

Is there any dev work happening on RPOL or is it in maintenance mode?

I just saw a new UI link -- is that the next iteration?

If you answer me, much appreciated -- please send me links or projects to look at.

(Note: I'm not a Dev, just an AV video conferencing tech dude.)

Re: OOC: General Off-Topic Discussion

In reply to REkz (msg # 28):

The site is owned and operated by one guy. You're right that notifications and some other features are missing. I've tried almost every other PBP site out there (even building my own), plus I've tried Discord, I still stick with RPOL because of all the features.

My game does use a discord server to converse with instant chat features, including notifying each other there whenever we post.

You might not know, there is a responsive version of the site now, https://r.rpol.net/
It's much better on phones and tablets than the old.
