House Rules

This will be an ongoing list of the various rule modifications and clarifications we'll be using for this game.

It is NOT to be used for discussion of the rules, as that will go under the General Discussion thread, so please do not post comments.

Margin of Success - Damage
We will be using the same system I created in the previous online M&M game we did a while back; this is a modified version of the MoS system that does not scale out of the power levels so easily.

Toughness Save = 15 + Attack Damage + 1dmg per 5 points rolled over the Defence DC.
Powers Save = 10 + Attack Damage + 1 per 5 points rolled over the necessary attack DC.

Critical Hits
We will continue to use critical hits on Natural 20's and sometimes 17, 18 or 19 if you have the right feats/weapons. With the modified MoS system for damage criticals will provide an additional bonus of Power Level/2.  So for us at Power Level 6 you will get a +3dmg bonus if you roll a critical.

Challenges
You will not need a special feat or ability to perform regular challenges.  Challenges are an action where you voluntarily take a penalty on one trait for an equal bonus on another related trait.  For example, you can take a -2 on your attack roll to gain a +2 to damage.  There are lots of skill related challenges that usually make the roll DC higher in exchange for a greater than normal outcome.

Re: House Rules

Mind Reading and Subtlety

Rather than following the normal rules for Subtle effects (see the Subtle power feat description), you can use the following optional rule for handling Mind Reading and similar effects with the first rank of Subtle.

The effect’s user makes a Mind Reading check (modifying skill is Bluff) for “mental subtlety” while the subject of the effect makes an opposed Sense Motive check to pick up on the subtle sensation of mental invasion. If the mind-reader wins, the subject does not detect the effect (whether or not it is successful), if the subject wins, he senses the effect’s use and whether or not it was successful. If someone is unaware of your intrusion you can scan their surface thoughts and perception without them getting a save (unless they have ranks in mental defence).

But if you attempt to read memories, perform a deep scan, try to trick them into thinking about something in particular, or similar more intensive action, then they do get a save.

If someone knows you have invaded their mind, they can attempt to eject you (saving throw), as described previously. Otherwise you can stealthily poach their surface thoughts. Each step up the time chart requires another check though.

PS: Surface perceptions will be interpreted as being able to perceive only what the subject themselves notice, i.e. you'll be subject to their ranks of Notice, not your own. If you want to use you own Notice skill using their senses, then you'll need a deeper connection.

Re: House Rules

Skill Swap:

If you have an untrained or low level skill that character may gain basic proficiency in it through swapping ranks with another skill the character possesses. This is a way for characters to be dynamic, adapting to their current circumstances, without having to pay ever more character points.

1) The skill to be raised must have less than 4 ranks dedicated to it; note that attribute bonuses do not count against this limit.

2) The character may raise the skill in question up to rank 4 through a transfer of ranks from another skill they are trained and have more than 4 ranks in. All the ranks being transferred need not be from a single skill, if multiple skills are over rank 4 the transferred ranks can be split among them.

3) The skill from which the ranks are transferred should be one the character has not used much of late, or ideally not at all in some time. This reflects how people will loose proficiency in skills without regular practice or use.

4) Advancement beyond 4 ranks will require the spending of character points as the character is putting serious effort into gaining a professional level of proficiency at that point.

5) Caution should be taken as the points cannot be transferred back if the skill is rank 4 or less, nor can the recipient skill have a rank of 4 or more.

Re: House Rules

Notice (Active): requires 1 move action, get your full Notice skill bonus

Notice (Passive): a non-action that acts as a target value or save value of someone trying to avoid your detection. This means if they roll under your passive perception (including modifiers) you detect them. Your basic score is 10 + 1/2 Notice skill bonus. Any special ability modifiers apply to this as well.

This is considered your general combat situation awareness; how much of the environment you're aware of in combat at any given time. If you decide to take a move or regular action to make a Notice check then you get the standard roll (or take 10) to see what's happening that round.

For powers that nullify a sense, like Invisibility, the opponent must make appropriate Stealth check versus your passive perception for those senses against which they are not invisible. Failure means your character detects something, and if the sense is accurate they know exactly where. Basically just because you are invisible/stealthy and unexpected does not mean people won't detect you. Of course if you have reason to think someone is invisible you can perform an active Notice check as well with a move action.

While sleeping or otherwise distracted or impaired (stunned, maybe types of poison, etc) your passive score is reduced by 5, so it is 5 + 1/2 Notice skill bonus. Any feats or powers that would negate the condition in question would similarly restore you passive Notice to the regular 10 + 1/2 Notice.

Search (active only): requires 1 action for a relatively empty space of 3m diameter
Requires 1 minute for a 3m diameter cluttered space with items to look through
Each step up the time/progression chart applies to this accordingly.

Re: House Rules

Minor clarification to passive Notice checks how they function with some additional information following a conversation with Eric.
